On 21 July 1969, 3 Platoon, A Company, 6 Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment forced their way through the damp Vietnamese jungle on a patrol as part of Operation Mundingburra. With the insects biting and the humidity sapping their strength, the platoon established a safe harbour and listened as the news came across the radio: Neil Armstrong had become the first man on the moon. Moments later, their skipper, Platoon Commander Lieutenant Peter Hines, stepped on a mine and exploded in a maelstrom of dirt, smoke and blood.Memories of that fateful day stayed with the members of 3 Platoon for more than a decade before singer-songwriter John Schumann transformed the story into a ballad that would capture the spirit of a generation and become the anthem for the veterans of the Vietnam war. This is the true story of Frank 'Frankie' Hunt and the other soldiers of 3 Platoon who were the inspiration for Redgum's 1983 hit song I Was Only Nineteen. Using first-hand accounts, The Jungle Dark is both a fascinating Australian yarn and enthralling military history. Vividly told, informative and poignant, it also traverses the deep unhealed wounds left in the minds and hearts of Vietnam soldiers long after they had left the battlefield.

A Great Story about Great Men and a Great Song By MickM Like most Australians I have heard the Redgum song "I was only 19" many times and I always get a shiver down my spine when I hear it, even though I have never served in the armed forces. From start to finish this book is a wonderful journey in the history of the men from 3 platoon A Company 6RAR, a song and Frankie Hunt a wounded Vietnam Veteran. I know it is a well worn cliché that I could not put this book down but in this case it is true. The book starts with the early life of Frankie, his military career, Vietnam, suffering physically and mentally, his work with the veterans community and how a famous song came to be born. The author is able to gain the interest of the reader right from the start and his descriptions of combat, terror, pain, comradeship and depression suffered by veterans is uncanny.I was very interested in how the song came to be and the way it was accepted by the nation especially the Vietnam Veterans' community. This book should be compulsory reading for all Australians especially students.I hope as a nation we now respect our veterans more than we did in the 60s and 70s.This was a wonderful book and good luck to you Frankie and all of your brothers in arms.

An honest and well written account of the torturous experiences of an Australian infantry unit in South Vietnam By Conscript The author has balanced the account well between personal profiles and the devastating misfortune of 3 Platoon, A Company, 6RAR. In the end he leads the reader to the origin of John Schumann's now famous song, 'I was only 19'. Perhaps Australian readers would appreciate the account more than American readers, but I'm sure many US Veterans could relate to it equally well. Thanks Steve Strevens for one of the best accounts I've read on Australians' experiences in the Vietnam War. Simply told in everyday language, this account will touch the hearts of many a Vietnam Veteran.
