Review “A charming start to the new Bookmobile Cat series. Librarian Minnie Hamilton is kind-hearted, loyal, and resourceful. And her furry sidekick, Eddie, is equal parts charm and cat-titude.”—New York Times bestselling author Sofie Kelly“Lending a Paw is a pleasurable, funny read. Minnie is a delight as a heroine, and Eddie could make even a staunch dog-lover more of a cat fan.”—RT Book Reviews

She tries to shoo him away, but he’s not having it. He has chosen Minnie as his new human. Minnie isn’t about to argue with a cat. She names him Eddie, but she doesn’t realize what an important role a cat can play in a person’s life.As Assistant Director of the Chilson Library in Michigan, Minnie is determined to institute a new program. Despite the library’s financial difficulties, she fights to have a bookmobile. A wealthy benefactor is willing to fund it and Minnie’s boss gives in. She excitedly takes it on its first run. Eddie manages to sneak on board, too. He fast makes friends at each stop the bookmobile makes, but Minnie is determined to leave him home next time as she’s afraid her boss won’t like a cat in the new bookmobile. On their first trip, Eddie races off to a barn and discovers a dead body. Minnie is horrified to learn he had been murdered, but even more so when she realizes she knows the victim – her benefactor. Several people close to Minnie become the prime suspect in the murder. She decides to help the police in their investigation, not that they ask for her help but their investigation is moving way too slowly for her liking. When her own life is in danger, she realizes she may have been better off staying at home. What a fun mystery! It combines two of my favorite things – cats and books. Eddie doesn’t talk and he doesn’t have any kind of magical powers, but he’s very smart and helps Minnie sort out the murder in his own way. He’s featured throughout the book and was as much a main character as Minnie. This is the first book in “A Bookmobile Cat Mystery” series and I’m so looking forward to the next one. The characters blended well and gave the reader a good feel for a small town. It’s fast-paced and the mystery kept me guessing until the end of the book.FTC Disclosure: The publisher provided me with a copy of this book to review. This did not influence my thoughts and opinions in any way. All opinions expressed are my own.

I was drawn to this one since the bookmobile seemed like a clever way for our heroine to end up in various situations. This is not a series with a crime solving cat. Eddie is for the most part just a cat doing cute cat things. His person Minnie is yet another crime solving librarian but she really didn't have much of a personality. That's pretty much how I felt about the whole thing. It was ok. I also prefer authors not hit you over the head with clues. There was one part where something should have reminded the reader of something Minnie heard earlier, so the author has Minnie replay the scene in her head. I felt like saying, "Yes I got that" but really what is the point of remembering anything if the author will just repeat it for you? So it was readable and ok but there wasn't much to separate Minnie and Eddie from any other librarian and her cat.

It is obvious that the author is a cat lover. The antics of her feline character, Eddie are very entertaining. Readers will enjoy the fact that Eddie isn't magical, he's just a regular curious cat who helps his owner Minnie stir up a mystery. This debut cozy is full of surprises and a lovely small town setting. Chilson, Michigan sounds like a place many readers will want to return to again and again. A great debut in a new series! What I liked:Eddie the cat, is certainly the star of the show in Lending a Paw. He befriends a local librarian and stows away on the first visit from the new bookmobile. Eddie is just a regular cat, but he finds a lot to get into in this mystery. He finds the murder victim and helps to solve the case. I thought Cass did a remarkable job of making an ordinary cat into an entertaining lead character. Eddie will probably be getting into a lot more in each new book in this series.Minnie is a lady after my own heart. She see's a need and sets out to do something about it. Several libraries in the Chilson, Michigan area have closed and Minnie gets funding for a new bookmobile to service the outlying areas. The bookmobile came to my house when I was a kid and came to see my daughters when they were children as well. I loved the idea for the book and for the great librarian that Cass has created. Minnie talks to Eddie, just like I do to my dog. She's a real pet lover, and an advocate for reading. A great overall character.I loved the small town setting for this one and many of the great characters that readers will get to meet in Lending a Paw. There was a lot of set up in this one for the series in general, and there are a lot of characters I look forward to finding out more about. I thought Cass did a great job of making Chilson come to life. What I didn't like:As I said before there was a lot of set up in this one. Cass introduces a plethora of characters and it was a bit confusing trying to keep them all straight. Some characters stood out but others kind of blended in to the background. I liked the mystery in this one and how Minnie saw Stan as a completely different person than most of the town did, but there was a little too much back and forth about the suspects to suit me.Bottom Line:This was a great debut, but it lacked a little focus. I think the author will do better in her sophomore effort but there won't be such a need to get the whole series going.
