In May 1942, the United States' first naval victory against the Japanese in the Coral Sea was marred by the loss of the aircraft carrier USS Lexington. Another carrier was nearly ready for launch when the news arrived, so the navy changed her name to Lexington, confusing the Japanese.
The men of the original "Lady Lex" loved their ship and fought hard to protect her. They were also seeking revenge for the losses sustained at Pearl Harbor. Crippling attacks by the Japanese left her on fire and dead in the water. A remarkable 90 percent of the crew made it off the burning decks before Lexington had to be abandoned. In all the annals of the Second World War, there is hardly a battle story more compelling.
Lexington's legacy did not end with her demise, however. Although the battle was deemed a tactical success for the Japanese, it turned out to be a strategic loss: For the first time in the war, a Japanese invasion force was forced to retreat.
The lessons learned by losing the Lexington at Coral Sea impacted tactics, air wing operations, damage control, and ship construction. Altogether, they forged a critical, positive turning point in the war. The ship that ushered in and gave birth to a new era in naval warfare might be gone, but fate decreed that her important legacy would live on.

About the Author
Phil Keith is a historian, ex-navy pilot, and the author of Stay the Rising Sun (Zenith Press, 2015), Blackhorse Riders, and Fire Base Illingworth. He is a Harvard graduate and served in the Vietnam War with distinction as a naval aviator. After the war, Keith went on to work for two Fortune 500 companies and became the CEO of three technology companies.
Today, Keith spends his time writing as a columnist, a magazine feature writer, and an author. He also teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design. Keith lives in Southampton, New York.

This body of work and scholarship includes well-researched literature from authorities on the subject including, but not limited to: Walter Lord, Samuel Eliot Morison, Dan van der Vat, John Toland, and Ronald H. Spector, and most recently, Ian W. Toll and James D. Hornfischer. While these eminent historians have contributed solid research through well-respected, lauded narrative, this assembled literature has lacked in-depth history of the officers and men and their heroism aboard the USS Lexington during the Battle of the Coral Sea. To the aforementioned list we should include historian and former U.S. Navy officer Phil Keith, for his work in Stay the Rising Sun: The True Story of USS Lexington, Her Valiant Crew, and Changing the Course of WWII.Keith’s theory and assertion that the Battle of the Coral Sea, and not the naval Battle of Midway or land battle on Guadalcanal, was the turning point in the War against Japan. Keith’s premise is not without merit, or allies; he has other historians on his side. Naval historian Dan van der Vat, in The Pacific Campaign: The U.S.-Japanese Naval War 1941-1945, writes: “Coral Sea was a tactical defeat for the Americans, because as the weaker side they lost more men, ships, and aircraft. But it was a strategic defeat for the Japanese, who felt obliged, for the first time since they had opened their Southern front, to halt a major advance and to change their plans.” van der Vat adds: “… the victors [Japan] behaved as if they had been beaten, and therefore they were beaten.” Finally: “There is thus a powerful case for arguing that the Coral Sea, not the much bigger and more dramatic clash exactly four weeks later at Midway, was the real turning point of the Pacific Campaign.”Operation “MO,” the Imperial Japanese Navy’s plan to take Port Moresby and ultimately Australia, was reversed as a result of heroism from the officers and men aboard the USS Lexington and USS Yorktown at Coral Sea. Numerous Medals of Honor and Navy Crosses were awarded to U.S. Navy personnel (ship-duty personnel and pilots) assigned to the USS Lexington during the war’s first battle between aircraft carriers. Japanese aircraft carriers Shokaku and Zuikaku exorbitant loss of aircraft and crews at Coral Sea preempted those ships from participating in the subsequent Battle of Midway, thus tilting the intelligence-benefitted epic further in favor of the U.S. Navy. Having written about World War II's Pacific Theater, specifically the U.S. Navy's campaign in the war against Japan, I thought I had a fairly good grasp on the U.S. ships and the American seamen who sailed them. Boy, was I wrong. Phil Keith, a master storyteller, digs deep here, and makes this history of "The Lady Lex" jump off the page with gusto and style. "Stay ..." is an engrossing narrative with a pounding pulse and a beating heart. I could not put it down.

We are given a history of the beginnings of our great fleets that make port of calls through the world. We can honor one of the great ships in U.S. Naval history. The beginnings of Naval Avation was hard fought by a group of forward thinking men. They had to fight the "Big Gun" faction on a daily basis, in the end and through trial and tribulation, they designed the modern navy.The Lady Lex was beloved by her crew, a wall in the Pacific Ocean in the dark days early in the Pacific war. Lexington (CV 2) fought valiantly, her men brave against all odds. Her Captain was a great seaman and leader and her crew reflected that leadership. The men of today's aircraft carriers owe the men of Lexington a great deal. As do we all
