It hooked me from the start with the author’s story about a personal tragedy which delivered lessons in leadership that shaped her life. This book contains takeaways and action items which are applicable in every aspect of life and work. Orlaith Carmody outlines an excellent structure for public speaking and gives invaluable tips on presenting. She also explains how to get your key points across in media interviews. The lessons on leadership in this book are also applicable to day-to-day activities in any job: how to optimise the effectiveness of meetings and how to get the results you want from negotiations. Orlaith provides fantastic advice on pitching: I love the metaphor of pitching being a date! Business, like life, is about relationships; and leadership is a superb way of building strong, productive, satisfying relationships. ‘Perform As A Leader’ is an essential read for everyone who is committed to reaching their potential!

So many "business advice" books have just one useful message in a couple of hundred pages. Happily, his book is the opposite, hundreds of gems of wisdom packed into one book. These are tips that anyone who finds themselves in a leadership position, or out in front of people for any reason, can and should use. It covers everything from public speaking, to handling the media as well as managing successful meetings and how to negotiate. This is a no-nonsense book that gets straight to the practical advice that I needed in various situations. I suggest reading it from cover to cover and then keeping in close as reference book to dip into from time to time. Highly recommended!
