The destruction of the Armenians of the Ottoman Empire sets the historical time for Memories of Tomarza. This book is a compilation of first hand, personal stories and memories collected sixty years ago from survivors who left Tomarza and settled in Wisconsin. Madaghjian gives interesting ethnographic information about the origin and development of the village of Tomarza, its historical ups and downs, its heroic episodes, the superior patriotic spirit of its children, its revolutionary, active struggles and the founding of New Tomarza inside of Armenia. It is also a history of St. Mesrob Church in Racine, Wisconsin, the people from Armenia who settled in Racine, Wisconsin, and the first Sunday School established at an Armenian Church in the USA.The book contains the personal memories of the 1915 deportation of Mr. Madaghjian's brother, Hagop, who was martyred in 1920.The book is lovingly dedicated to his memory. "So many times a historical account of everyday life can overlook the small, interesting details. However, it is exactly that attention to detail which makes this history come alive. Toros Madaghjian's memoir gives me a sense of actually being there." Rev. Father Yeprem Kelegian, St. Mesrob Armenian Church, Pastor

About the Author Toros M. Madaghjian, having resettled in Racine, Wisconsin, after days of the false Turkish Constitution, proves himself immensely useful to his compatriots from Tomarza and gets closely interested in the community and church activities in America. Mr. Madaghjian, 1890-1989, was an unselfish, sacrificing, patriotic and church-loving model Armenian who was concerned with the preservation of his ethnicity rather than his own profits, and to that end strived for almost twenty years to inculcate within the generation of youth assimilating in America love of the church and of ethnicity by means of Sunday School. This book was published in 1959 in the Armenian language. It has been translated into English by Reverand Father Arten Ashjian and published by the Madaghjian family in 2015, the one hundredth anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

My Grandfather who survived the Armenian Genocide and lived to be 99 wrote this book on the his home town and the people there. The book is about their history, struggles and ultimate pilgrimage to the United States. Unfortunately, he wrote the book in his native language so very few people could read it. It is very fitting that this translation happened on the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. At one time my parents visited the historic site of Tomarza and met a Turkish man that lived there presently. He was very warm to them and told them that Armenians used to live there, but moved away for some reason he didn't know...

There are several books on the village and its people - originally written in Armenian. Some have been translated into English, including Toros Madaghjian's work. Also see Haroutiun Barootian's "Reminiscences from Tomarza's Past" published by the Gomidas Institute in 2007.
