By JMG This historic novel shares an under-told story of the American Civil War. In a very authentic way the author uncovers the pride-of-country as well as the dangers facing Southerners who supported the Union cause. It is obvious that a tremendous amount of research went into exploring land use details, migration patterns, modern farming techniques, political undercurrents of the Civil War, and the aftermath of a war and its effect on the land and the population. As an example of presenting history in a fresh way the author explores the role of horses in the war and where they came from. As the plot evolves nuances of riding, breeding, and training horses are revealed. It was an absolute joy to read the author's descriptions of the horsemanship. Likewise with her descriptions of tree varieties and birds. It is obvious that Ms. Doerr is a horse lover, a birder and a naturalist.Another commendable aspect of this book is that history of each character's grandfather's grandfather is woven into the plot. This gives the reader glimpses into the heritage of Unionists, Confederates, American Indians, Europeans, women, men and children who impacted the American landscape at different points of time throughout history.Excellent book.

A true to life story By Noah Anderson Eureka Valley is a book of massive scope, that weaves together a complex, real story into one singular narrative. The book follows a family's history that spans pre and post Civil War and the modern day, North Alabama and Northern Wisconsin, and Southern Unionists and Scandinavian Immigrants. The book touches upon a variety of issues that our society has and continues to wrestle with, like slavery and racism industrial vs local agriculture, environmentalism and economy. Throughout this tapestry is the human connection to each other, the Land and to Horses. The breadth of the Author's treatise is both its Achilles heel and saving grace. Frankly, I doubt many first time authors could pull this off- Lisa Doerr manages it very well.Cons:I had a hard time getting into the beginning of the book- So many threads to pick up at once, and the plot seemed to stumble around how to best begin weaving its complex tale. One or two of the Southern Confederate characters were myopic and that was a little hard to get past. Eventually, I just skipped ahead a few dozen pages-- but by this time, the Author seemed to have found her voice and the book settled into a good rhythm. This may have just been my difficulty- but if you find yourself wrestling with the first few pages like I did- then persevere! The rest of the book is well worth it.The only other area that I felt let down was the ending- very abrupt. I think part of this is a true reflection of how real people's lives normally are- they may go through a phenomenal trial- a story that is very inspiring, but it doesn't have the tidy "Hollywood ending" that leaves us in a comfortable place-- no in real life- their life, just went on. HOWEVER- as a reader- I am still left wanting. Here, an Afterword would give the reader the context for the book, deeper insights into the historical accident of the cultural gumbo of Northern Wisconsin without reverting to a candy coated, palatable hollywood ending. Those two weaknesses aside, the book is a gem. I loved the complexity of the story, I am a lover of personal memoirs and this book, as an historical fiction, captures that authenticity of a real person's experience without sacrificing the story to historical accuracy. As an example of how Lisa Doerr keeps her narrative grounded in reality-- the author captures the tremendous familial pride in horseflesh that, for the most part, has been lost in our culture. Generations of people raised, bred and bragged about the quality of their stock-- and names like Mountain Slasher, Copperbottom, Bulletts, Tom Hals, Chiefs, Grey Johns, Stonewalls, and Black Squirrels were lineages recited with pride. Great horses were a source of family honor. Lisa infuses her narrative with the the legend of one of these great horses.Enjoy the book!

By bb Lisa Doerr intertwined historical facts making her book, Eureka Valley Grandfathers’ Grandfathers, a fascinating journey into our nation’s history of Southern Unionists during the Civil War. It is also the story of some Southern Unionists seeking refuge in Eureka Valley, Wisconsin, after the war. This historical novel becomes a review of many aspects of the Civil War that some of us may have forgotten or not thought about in a long time. For example (and by no means a complete list): 1) the importance of horses during the Civil War battles; 2) how many horses were killed while ridden by General Forrest during battle; 3) the war horse, Roderick; 4) the persecution of Southern Unionist by those loyal to the confederacy during the war as well as after the war ended; 5) that many of those remaining loyal to the confederacy after the war ended who supported the KKK were also stalwart supporters of the Democratic party. The vivid lyrical descriptions of the landscapes, environments, and horses enables one to see and appreciate what the characters are experiencing. I have never visited this part of Wisconsin, but after reading the book this is now another part of the USA on my “visit” list.
