Happiness for Maggie Isabel means a family of her own. Her beautiful home is a dream come true, a far cry from the shotgun house on Dorgenois Street. Most importantly, daughter Gina is thriving at the same school where Maggie teaches. There is only one problem: Principal Beverly Ogden’s perpetual harassment. Where is Ruby, Maggie’s older sister, when she needs her? She could sure use a good sparring to fire-up her Irish temper. Fate lends a hand and Maggie finds a journal documenting her adolescent struggles following her mother’s death and her new life with Ruby, twenty-one years her senior. The journal entries are both comical and tragic, and her stress unrelenting. If Maggie can stand up to Ruby, why not to Beverly Ogden? Teaching is a noble profession, exempt from the politics of power. Isn’t it?

About the Author I am a writer, but I didn’t start out that way. After college, I became certified to teach English in high school. Ironically, I taught writing during the last ten years of my twenty-two year career in a prominent all boy Catholic school in the New Orleans area. But writing was never a serious option for me as a person until I eulogized a dear friend from high school. It was the first time I received rave reviews, rowdy applause and heard raucous laughter. A funeral is hardly a suitable venue for a writing debut, but in the words of the decedent’s sister, I was a hit. Charlotte’s family laughed and cried as I retold how she and I became friends at St. Joseph Academy, a now defunct all girl Catholic high school in New Orleans. I felt such gratifications that my words incited such honest emotions. Without an audience, writing is a series of letters, an alphabet hidden away. What I write about is relationships between people, success and failure, love and heartbreak, laughter and tears—women’s literary fiction. Writers I have taught have influenced how I write: Southern writers like Harper Lee and Truman Capote, Eudora Welty, and Flannery O’Connor. Fried Green Tomatoes is a favorite novel and more recently, The Help by Kathryn Stockett. The South is what I know about and New Orleans is where I was born and bred. I lived in a shotgun house near Broad and St. Bernard Avenue, where Al Scramuzza’s Seafood City was within walking distance. I dressed up and rode the Public Service bus to Canal Street and met my girlfriends under the clock in front of D.H. Holmes. On weekends in the summer, we went to Pontchartrain Beach. I drank Dixie Beer and watched Morgus the Magnificent on Saturday night. My husband and I have two married daughters and three grandchildren with two more on the way. In between the glamorous life of washing clothes and cleaning and babysitting, I write: not on a lonely beach at sunset but in my PJs at the computer or while a batch of clothes is in the dryer.

The author’s style of storytelling is one that somehow makes it comfortable to read. And “comfortable” for me translates as easy-to-ready and pleasurable. It had my rapt attention and I was hooked, anxious to find out what was coming next. And this was only after page 1!!! I continued delighting in this reading entertainment page after page, chapter after chapter. What makes it such an enjoyable read is being made aware of each character’s makeup – background, experiences and psyche – which in turn allows for empathy and understanding, akin to being caught up in a favorite soap opera. The various storylines are captivating, intricate, enthralling, compelling; and the conclusion has the “didn’t see that coming” twist. This is Cheryl F. Rogers first novel? Well done, Ms. Rogers – I look forward to more from you!

If you are from New Orleans or spent anytime there you will appreciate this book. It is a story of perseverance, detetmination and the reality that even if you do everything right life isn't always fair. It is how you deal with what life gives you that truly matters.
