In-Depth and Well-Organized Guide to London (5- Stars) By Debbie Lee Wesselmann I love the Fodor's guides, and, while I don't like them quite as much as Frommer's (more on that later), they still provide a wealth of information for the traveler, whether you use it before or during a trip. The Fodor's Travel London is no exception. It breaks down the enormously complicated city of London into more manageable chunks, from the different neighborhoods to sights to lodging to food to transportation. This guide includes a durable fold-out map of the city with, of course, an Underground map. Although some things never change in London, this 2016-updated guide should be more up-to-date with prices, hours, extant restaurants, and trends than older editions.I like how this guide is organized. After an introduction to London itself, the guide tackles the different sections of the city, one by one, so that you can plan your days by seeing attractions that are located close to one another. Although the guide includes a feature called "Quick Bites" for an impromptu food or drink stop, these neighborhood sections are not cluttered by lodging and food listings. Instead, you can go to those individual chapters and then to the listings within the particular section of the city you're interested in. Fodor's also includes chapters on the performing arts, night life, and shopping. I especially appreciate the chart under "Where to Stay" that describes the "vibe" of the individual neighborhoods to help you choose a good fit for both your budget and your personality. The fact that this guidebook is 450 pages, with only a small section of day trips outside of London, gives you a hint at how in-depth it is. The only thing that I wish it contained is something akin to rival Frommer's lists of top things to do and walking tours that gives you an idea of where to start your sightseeing. In many ways, Fodor's London can seem overwhelming; however, once you identify your top must-sees in the city, you can delve into the neighborhood sections around those sights. This is an excellent guidebook that has been updated to reflect new information as of late 2015. The information it includes goes a long way toward both planning and on-the-ground guidance.-- Debbie Lee Wesselmann

Well organized and full of practical advice By Gaby at Starting Fresh blog We're planning a trip to London next year, so I read Fodor's London as part of our advanced planning. The book begins by laying the groundwork, including the least recommended times to visit (2 weeks during October half-term when most attractions are "overrun by children" and busy and hot early August when the "Tube travel is a sweltering and sweaty nightmare"). There are suggestions access to art, culture and sporting events from the months for Soccer season (August to May) to when and how to get discounted theater tickets. The book gives a basic overview of the history of London's architecture, suggested places that children might enjoy, different afternoon tea and historic pub crawl suggestions. The guide is organized by neighborhoods and then by where to eat, where to stay, nightlife, performing arts, shopping, and side trips from London. You'll find 12 main neighborhoods: (1) Westminister, St James & Royal London; (2) Mayfair & Marylebone; (3) Soho & Convent Garden; (4) Bloomsbury & Holborn; (5) the City; (6) East London; (7) South of the Thames; (8) Kensington, Chelsea, Knightsbridge & Belgravia; (9) Notting Hill & Bayswater; (10) Regent's Park & Hampstead; (11) Greenwich; (12) the Thames Upstream. Each section begins with a map, the main tourist highlights, closest subway stops and public bathrooms in the area. The historic landmarks are described briefly - explaining the practical information that you'd need. I found that the brief descriptions are enough for me to mark places and things that I'd like to read more about or explore. The section on Performing Arts is particularly helpful with specific and practical tips.Overall, Fodor's London 2016 gives background/overview, practical information, concise descriptions and conveys the atmosphere of different places. It's a great for planning a visit and as a go-to guide while traveling.

I didn't think a travel guide would be useful to someone who has traveled to the country as many times as I have, but I was wrong. I always preferred Lonely Planet and DK Publish guides, because of their colorful layouts and "where the locals go" suggestions. I tend to be an off-the-beaten-path kinda of gal. I like to eat with the locals eat, visit lesser-known sites, and take the scenic route over the superhighways. I really appreciate that Fodor's offered many suggestions that appeal to my live like the locals nature.I was pleasantly surprised that this guide offered information about some of the off the beaten path places I have found in London. This guide is very thorough, offering travel tips, the history of different areas, and all the pertinent information needed to visit the attractions. As with most travel guides, I found the restaurant choices to be a bit pedestrian. I tend to avoid places recommended and guides because they are usually very touristy.
