PREPARE TO BE BEAKED BY THE MAJESTIC EAGLE OF HISTORY Most of us are familiar with the greatest hits and legendary heroes of US history. In George Washington Is Cash Money, Cory O’Brien, author of Zeus Grants Stupid Wishes, does away with the pomp and circumstance and calls America’s history what it is: one long, violent soap opera. In his signature clever, crude, and cuss-ridden style, O’Brien reminds us that:   · Teddy Roosevelt stopped bullets with his manly chest · Harriet Tubman avoided danger by having prophetic seizures. · Joseph Smith invented Mormonism by staring into a hat full of rocks. · Billy the Kid was finally defeated by the smell of fresh bacon.   And there’s plenty more Star Spangled stupidity where that came from.

Review Praise for Zeus Grants Stupid Wishes“I was giggling by the first page and full blown LOLing by the first myth. It’s really that funny.”–Electric Feast “It is in fact the not-so-delicate, in-your-face attitude, sarcasm, and black humor that have made this book an instant standout against the other mythology chronicles of its time.”–The Blue & Gold

About the Author Cory O’Brien is a word-wizard and technojester of the first degree. He reads and writes mythology, science fiction, and computer code. He has camped with gypsies, juggled for food, and driven across the country in a car powered by vegetable oil. Now he lives in Chicago, where he recently graduated with an MFA in writing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Cory's dream is to one day travel to Mars, or at least to own a jacket made entirely of pockets.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Benjamin Franklin Is the God of Lightning   I know what you’re expecting because I know how books like this usually go. I’m supposed to tick off the Founding Fathers one by one and tell you what assholes they all actually are. You know why popular history likes to do this? Because everyone loves to see their heroes look bad and if you have enough information about a dude it is SUPER EASY to make him look like a dingus. BAM INSTANT BESTSELLER.   I did it with Christopher Columbus because he’s terrible and I did it with George Washington ’cause he’s the colonial equivalent of a trust fund kid but now it’s time to talk about Ben Franklin and I won’t do it. It’s not that I can’t make Big Ben look like a prick. Dude may have (definitely) hit on his best bro’s girl while his bro was out of town one time and he may have (definitely) refused to marry a lady because her parents wouldn’t pay off ALL HIS DEBT and he may have (definitely) cheated on his wife and then fathered a son who eventually fought against him in the revolution but when the best dirt historians can dig up on you is that you had a lot of extramarital sex well, at worst you’re the Zeus of the thirteen colonies.   Ben gets born in Boston around 1706 which means he had exactly seventy years to become enough of a ruckus-causer to spark off the American Revolution. Yeah imagine your granddad banging hookers in France while simultaneously negotiating military treaties and maybe then you’ll understand why I like this guy.   Anyway he gets born he works for his brother as a printer for a while teaches himself writing (because he’s too poor for college) and then goes “fuck this” and moves to Philly because he hears they have dope sandwiches. In Philly, he keeps being a printer and he’s so goddamn good at it (spoiler: Ben Franklin is good at EVERYTHING) that pretty soon dudes are just handing him cash to buy his own press and start his own business.   So now he becomes a master printer buys a couple slaves (but don’t worry, he frees them later and he doesn’t even have to die first!) and starts a newspaper which he uses to manipulate the opinions of Philadelphia’s ENTIRE GOVERNMENT. He also starts a weekly discussion group which gets so popular that each member starts his own discussion group and from that point on Ben Franklin owns Philadelphia.   Let me explain how this works: Anytime Benjamin Franklin wants a thing to happen the first thing he does is write a paper about it then he reads it in his discussion group and then he gives it to each of his members and has them read it in their discussion group then he publishes it in his newspaper which is the most popular newspaper in the city and then when everybody is talking about his plan he goes to the assembly (which he is also the clerk of, coincidentally) and is like “Hey, guys it seems like everybody wants this thing to happen maybe you should do it.” BOOM. POLITICS.   He uses this technique to get a night watch a fire department a militia a hospital a university paved roads and a library (while also securing himself a contract to print ALL THE MONEY IN PENNSYLVANIA). You couldn’t throw a rock down a street without hitting a public service attributable to him and even if you did your rock would be quickly swept up by the street sweepers Franklin employed.   So obviously he becomes unreasonably wealthy and he tries to retire but everyone is like “NOPE YOU HAVE TO BE IN THE ASSEMBLY NOW” and he’s like “Aw man, really? I was looking forward to a life of leisure just doin’ science and hot chicks forever.” But he does it anyway. Then when shit starts getting crazy in the colonies he goes to England and he’s like “Guys, maybe we should make a deal where you don’t act like you can make laws for us and we maybe don’t kill all your guys” and the British are like “PISH POSH” and Ben’s like “Okay maybe stop being British for a sec and just listen to me” and the British are like “BALDERDASH” and Ben is like “Okay, well I guess I’m gonna go tell France to kill you now” and the French (who at this time in history will take ANY opportunity to screw with England) are like “OUI OUI” and Ben is like “God dammit I’m surrounded by foreigners.”   But Franklin is not content simply to challenge the British Empire he has to challenge THE GODS THEMSELVES specifically Zeus, god of lightning presumably because he didn’t like the competition when it came to illegitimate sexytimes.   So Ben decides to find out what’s up with electricity which means he has to take a break from single-handedly inventing Philadelphia to run some experiments and it turns out that there is one particular experiment that everyone else is too much of a weenie to run and that is the experiment that will finally answer the age-old question: “IS LIGHTNING MADE OF ELECTRICITY????” COME ON COME THE FUCK ON IT’S LIGHTNING. WHEN YOU GET HIT BY LIGHTNING IT GOES BZZT AND YOUR SKIN GOES TRA NSPARENT AND EVERYONE CAN SEE YOUR BONES HOW IS THIS NOT OBVIOUS? Man, the past is dumb.   But Big Ben Franklin is NOT so he does the smartest possible thing which is to make a kite out of metal and silk attach a key to the bottom and go out in a lightning storm. This guy is on our money, America. Not only is he on our money he’s on a denomination of money that I’m not even rich enough to possess. Anyway, this experiment is a great success Benjamin Franklin finally proves that lightning is the only thing it could possibly be and he writes a paper about it and sends it to the Royal Society of London and they’re all like “POPPYCOCK! LIGHTING IS MADE OF GLOWING BEES EVERYONE KNOWS THAT.” And they refuse to acknowledge the experiment until some French dudes run it better.   This brings to mind an old adage: Early to bed and early to rise will not make you as cool as Benjamin Franklin. SLEEP LATE HAVE SEX.

George Washington isn't even the best chapter By Aimee Jarboe History and mythology are pretty much the same thing to this author--which is both a compliment from me and a statement I pulled directly from the book's introduction (the part of the book also labeled "Emergency Toilet Paper"). Cory O'Brien weaves epic tales in a modern bardic mashup of Norse poetry, beat poetry, and Tumblr comments, exalting America's pantheon from Johnny Appleseed to Marilyn Monroe. This book gave me more emotions than anticipated, mostly from the candid self-awareness displayed by the author. 5 stars for teaching me about the best and worst of humanity in the best way.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A hilarious and intelligent book By Andrew Groen O'brien has a way with words, and he is so much fun to read. George Washington is Cash Money is full of all of the quintessential American myths (even though we often don't call them myths) from the story of John Henry to Benjamin Franklin's kite/lighting story. Even when you already know the details of the story it's an absolute joy to see how Cory O'Brien retells them. The book itself is a great reminder of all the great stories in American cultural history, and O'Brien's writing makes it fun to read while also using modern colloquial language to elucidate the grander themes of the story that are sometimes difficult for modern audiences to suss out. This is just as good as his previous book, and I can't wait to see what he does next.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Lots of fun By Jen L This book is pretty hilarious. Like O'Brien's other book, Zeus Grants Stupid Wishes, it's sort of how Reddit might tell American history/mythology. You have to have a pretty high level of irreverence to appreciate it, but if you have that, there's a lot to laugh at.

It is not a general guide to sites, etc. If you are interested in the specific suggestions they are very helpful. But there is a lot more to Belfast than what is covered here. Its audience seem to be younger travelers arriving by plane. I don't plan on visiting a TGIFriday in Belfast.A minor criticism is the incredible number of misspellings and grammatical errors.

That's one of the best restaurant options in Belfast By Robert Kelly This "book" contains some helpful suggestions for tourism options but is mostly an advertisement for a couple of particular establishments (a hotel and a couple of restaurants). A recommendation for TGI Fridays for dinner? That's one of the best restaurant options in Belfast? Seriously?

Lady Carbury is beset by worries about her career and the futures of her son and daughter. She tries to flatter editors into reviewing her new book favorably; she tries to persuade her daughter Hetta to marry her cousin Roger Carbury; and she hopes to find an heir to marry her wastrel son, Sir Felix. Roger Carbury is deeply in love with Hetta, but Hetta loves Roger’s friend, Paul Montague. Roger earlier persuaded Paul to break with his American fiancé, Mrs. Hurtle, arguing that her vagueness about her past, coupled with rumors that she fought a duel with her husband and shot a man, make her an unsuitable wife for an English gentleman. When Paul falls in love with Hetta, however, Roger feels betrayed. Sir Felix is a financial drain on his mother; his chief pastime is gambling with other dissolute young gentlemen at their club, the Beargarden. He reluctantly agrees to his mother’s plan that he court Marie Melmotte, the only child of the arrogant financier Augustus Melmotte. Melmotte is in London only for a short time and is dogged by rumors of past shady dealings, but he establishes himself as London’s leading financial genius. Felix’s wooing of Marie lacks spirit, but Marie thinks him beautiful and determines to marry him despite her father’s opposition and preference for another suitor, Lord Nidderdale, whose family connections are superior to those of Sir Felix. Marie, who knows she has control over money that her father settled on her in order to make it secure if his speculations fail, devises a plan whereby she and Sir Felix will elope to New York. Melmotte’s men seize Marie in Liverpool before her ship sails, however, and Sir Felix does not leave London at all, instead spending the night gambling away the money provided him by Marie and his mother. Lady Carbury, in anguish over her son’s behavior, turns for help to Mr. Broune, an editor with whom she flirted and whose marriage proposal she rejected, but with whom she begins to develop a more honest intimacy. Melmotte skillfully draws members of the British upper classes into his financial schemes, the biggest of which involves selling shares in a projected railroad from Utah to Mexico. Montague is made a partner in the scheme through his association in California with Hamilton Fisker, a wheeler-dealer who originates the railroad plan. Melmotte organizes a toothless...

Amazon.com Review Trollope's 1875 tale of a great financier's fraudulent machinations in the railway business, and his daughter's ill-use at the hands of a grasping lover (for whom she steals funds in order to elope) is a classic in the literature of money and a ripping good read as well.

Review "The Way We Live Now is the essence of Trollope. If he had written no other novel, it would have ensured his immortality."

From the Inside Flap 'Trollope did not write for posterity, ' observed Henry James. 'He wrote for the day, the moment; but these are just the writers whom posterity is apt to put into its pocket.' Considered by contemporary critics to be Trollope's greatest novel, "The Way We Live Now is a satire of the literary world of London in the 1870s and a bold indictment of the new power of speculative finance in English life. 'I was instigated by what I conceived to be the commercial profligacy of the age, ' Trollope said. His story concerns Augustus Melmotte, a French swindler and scoundrel, and his daughter, to whom Felix Carbury, adored son of the authoress Lady Carbury, is induced to propose marriage for the sake of securing a fortune. Trollope knew well the difficulties of dealing with editors, publishers, reviewers, and the public; his portrait of Lady Carbury, impetuous, unprincipled, and unswervingly devoted to her own self-promotion, is one of his finest satirical achievements. His picture of late-nineteenth-century England is a portrait of a society on the verge of moral bankruptcy. In "The Way We Live Now Trollope combines his talents as a portraitist and his skills as a storyteller to give us life as it was lived more than a hundred years ago.

I consider it to be a tragedy that Anthony Trollope's works are largely forgotten and overlooked by the reading public. So many well-educated people have never even heard ot him, although his novels are some of the best representatives of what a good novel should be! His beautiful storytelling in "The Way We Live Now" is just another example of Trollope at his best. A master raconteur, his vivid descriptions and cutting satire make this work one of his most controversial (at least at the time) and indeed one of his most respected. Though his longest work, it certainly does not seem long because he keeps the reader on his toes, so much so, that he is dying to know what will happen next. The best thing about the book, in my opinion, is the fact that it is difficult to find a character whom you can like. Each one, and there are many, has one or more particular faults, and we, as the readers, quickly realize that no one is perfect. Even the sympathetic characters are prejudiced at times. This, I believe, is a marked contrast to Dickensian personnages who much of the time are almost too angelic or cruel to be believable. Trollope give us a lesson in true human nature, one that will be very hard for me to forget.

44 of 44 people found the following review helpful. "You need a special kind of man who understands the way we live now to lead you into that new world of peace and prosperity." By Mary Whipple Often considered Trollope's greatest novel, this satire of British life, written in 1875, leaves no aspect of society unexamined. Through his large cast of characters, who represent many levels of society, Trollope examines the hypocrisies of class, at the same time that he often develops sympathy for these characters who are sometimes caught in crises not of their own making. Filling the novel with realistic details and providing vivid pictures of the various settings in which the characters find themselves, Trollope also creates a series of exceptionally vibrant characters who give life to this long and sometimes cynical portrait of those who move the country.Lady Carbury, her innocent daughter Henrietta (Hetta), and her attractive but irresponsible son Felix are the family around which much of the action rotates. They are always in need of money and Lady Carbury writes pap novels to support the family (and Felix's drinking and gambling). In contrast to the Carburys, and just as important to the plot, are the Melmottes. Augustus Melmotte, who has come from Vienna under a cloud of financial suspicions, has acquired a huge estate for himself, his foreign wife, and his marriageable daughter. Boorish, but determined to become a leader of society, Melmotte provides moments of humor for the reader, though he is scorned by an aristocracy which is nevertheless beholden to him for his investments. When Paul Montague, a young businessman who has invested in a railroad in America, arrives in town, he finds himself in love with Hetta--and in competition with Roger Carbury for her hand. Felix courts the Melmottes' daughter for her fortune, and she falls in love with him while he dallies with a local domestic worker.Often addressing the reader directly, Trollope fills the novel with action and subplots which illustrate a wide variety of themes, often depicting his characters satirically to illustrate the social, political, and financial ills of the day. Ahead of his time for his depiction of the lively, intelligent woman whose role is defined (and limited) by her social and financial position, Trollope creates a number of resourceful women--and a number who are willing to do almost anything to marry a wealthy man. As is customary in Victorian novels, the good are rewarded here, and the evil are punished, but Trollope's characters, unlike those by Dickens, for example, usually control their own destinies. Broad in scope, thoughtful in construction, complete in its depiction of 1870s' England, filled with wonderful characters, and absolutely engrossing to read, The Way We Live Now is one of the great novels of the nineteenth century. It concerns greed, pursuit of position, and fraud in late 19th century London, but most of the story line reads as if it could have been set in 2008, during the financial scandals on Wall Street. There is even a Bernard Madoff type figure in the story. There is also a BBC/PBS adaptation available on DVD. It is also excellent, but necessarily lacks some of the richness of detail that we find in the book. I don't think of Tollope's books as page turners, but I got to a point where I didn't want to put this down. Perhaps in a few years the material won't seem as fresh, but right now it's very timely.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, the Deccan plateau of south-central India was home to a series of important, highly cultured Muslim kingdoms and was a nexus of international trade. Invigorated by cultural connections to Iran, Turkey, East Africa, and Europe, Deccani art is celebrated for its unmistakable, otherworldly character: in painting, a poetic lyricism; in architecture, a somber grandeur; and in the decorative arts, lively creations in inlaid metalwork and dyed textiles. This beautifully illustrated catalogue, which includes extraordinary new site photographs and lush landscape images, along with discussions of 200 of the finest Deccani works, creates the most comprehensive examination to date of this fascinating and remote world. The text not only discusses paintings, drawings, textiles, arms, manuscripts, and other decorative arts from this rich culture, but also explores the history, architecture, literature, and music of the period. Essays by prominent international authors, supplemented by informative maps, illustrated appendices, and select primary sources, make this pioneering book a key resource on the subject.

Thorough & enjoyably informative complement to an eye-opening exhibition By Rajika Excellent - and thorough - catalogue of a stellar exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the Met's best ever. Informative but in an easy way that would satisfy scholar and lay-person alike. Objects are in a never before - and probably never again - exhibit which can't even travel to the UK. Exhibition - & catalogue - open up a world not often written about - the Deccan Plateau of India - during the reign of the independent sultans.Land of diamonds (some are 90 carats!) and fascinating architecture, the works are placed in the context of unusual styles of painting, and artisanry: marbled paper, decoupe-work (paper cut to make designs, then glued on paper surfaces); inlaid metal and other eye-openers - which one might miss were it not for the excellent descriptions. whether you saw the exhibit or not - this is a prize for anyone's collection of art - specially Indian art.

In-Depth and Well-Organized Guide to London (5- Stars) By Debbie Lee Wesselmann I love the Fodor's guides, and, while I don't like them quite as much as Frommer's (more on that later), they still provide a wealth of information for the traveler, whether you use it before or during a trip. The Fodor's Travel London is no exception. It breaks down the enormously complicated city of London into more manageable chunks, from the different neighborhoods to sights to lodging to food to transportation. This guide includes a durable fold-out map of the city with, of course, an Underground map. Although some things never change in London, this 2016-updated guide should be more up-to-date with prices, hours, extant restaurants, and trends than older editions.I like how this guide is organized. After an introduction to London itself, the guide tackles the different sections of the city, one by one, so that you can plan your days by seeing attractions that are located close to one another. Although the guide includes a feature called "Quick Bites" for an impromptu food or drink stop, these neighborhood sections are not cluttered by lodging and food listings. Instead, you can go to those individual chapters and then to the listings within the particular section of the city you're interested in. Fodor's also includes chapters on the performing arts, night life, and shopping. I especially appreciate the chart under "Where to Stay" that describes the "vibe" of the individual neighborhoods to help you choose a good fit for both your budget and your personality. The fact that this guidebook is 450 pages, with only a small section of day trips outside of London, gives you a hint at how in-depth it is. The only thing that I wish it contained is something akin to rival Frommer's lists of top things to do and walking tours that gives you an idea of where to start your sightseeing. In many ways, Fodor's London can seem overwhelming; however, once you identify your top must-sees in the city, you can delve into the neighborhood sections around those sights. This is an excellent guidebook that has been updated to reflect new information as of late 2015. The information it includes goes a long way toward both planning and on-the-ground guidance.-- Debbie Lee Wesselmann

Well organized and full of practical advice By Gaby at Starting Fresh blog We're planning a trip to London next year, so I read Fodor's London as part of our advanced planning. The book begins by laying the groundwork, including the least recommended times to visit (2 weeks during October half-term when most attractions are "overrun by children" and busy and hot early August when the "Tube travel is a sweltering and sweaty nightmare"). There are suggestions access to art, culture and sporting events from the months for Soccer season (August to May) to when and how to get discounted theater tickets. The book gives a basic overview of the history of London's architecture, suggested places that children might enjoy, different afternoon tea and historic pub crawl suggestions. The guide is organized by neighborhoods and then by where to eat, where to stay, nightlife, performing arts, shopping, and side trips from London. You'll find 12 main neighborhoods: (1) Westminister, St James & Royal London; (2) Mayfair & Marylebone; (3) Soho & Convent Garden; (4) Bloomsbury & Holborn; (5) the City; (6) East London; (7) South of the Thames; (8) Kensington, Chelsea, Knightsbridge & Belgravia; (9) Notting Hill & Bayswater; (10) Regent's Park & Hampstead; (11) Greenwich; (12) the Thames Upstream. Each section begins with a map, the main tourist highlights, closest subway stops and public bathrooms in the area. The historic landmarks are described briefly - explaining the practical information that you'd need. I found that the brief descriptions are enough for me to mark places and things that I'd like to read more about or explore. The section on Performing Arts is particularly helpful with specific and practical tips.Overall, Fodor's London 2016 gives background/overview, practical information, concise descriptions and conveys the atmosphere of different places. It's a great for planning a visit and as a go-to guide while traveling.

I didn't think a travel guide would be useful to someone who has traveled to the country as many times as I have, but I was wrong. I always preferred Lonely Planet and DK Publish guides, because of their colorful layouts and "where the locals go" suggestions. I tend to be an off-the-beaten-path kinda of gal. I like to eat with the locals eat, visit lesser-known sites, and take the scenic route over the superhighways. I really appreciate that Fodor's offered many suggestions that appeal to my live like the locals nature.I was pleasantly surprised that this guide offered information about some of the off the beaten path places I have found in London. This guide is very thorough, offering travel tips, the history of different areas, and all the pertinent information needed to visit the attractions. As with most travel guides, I found the restaurant choices to be a bit pedestrian. I tend to avoid places recommended and guides because they are usually very touristy.

Learn What It Costs To Strike It Rich By Richard Let veteran newsman and editor, Don Surber, introduce you to a thoroughly entertaining collection of Exceptional Americans. Volume Two focuses on the Capitalists who shaped our nation's development through their drive to succeed, enriching themselves and our society. Each featured personality has their story told in an engaging way that personalizes history without embellishment. Having read the first volume of Exceptional Americans as well as many of the individual vignettes that make up this collection I can recommend this book to readers of all ages. Probably my favorite part of reading these stories is learning how much struggle and effort goes into being successful. America is truly heir to Greatness. One Exceptional American at a time.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Volume 2: Bigger and Better Than Ever! By Robert E. Bell III Don Surber is back with his second volume of Exceptional Americans. He proves by example that you don't have to be a king, a general, nor an explorer to have a significant impact on the world. In fact, the Americans listed here have probably had more impact on more lives than any of the people discussed in most history books. Although his book gives 80 vignettes of exceptional Americans, the greatest tribute is to the freedom and free market culture of America, for that is what allows all of these people to succeed. This same culture allows many many more to succeed in more mundane lives, for it truly allows for "liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." This book should be read to all children to counter academia's description of them as "robber barons," and to counter the pernicious meme that the wealthy became that way by stealing from the less fortunate. Thanks, Don, for an inspiring history lesson.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The Creators of Wealth who made America Great By paul s damus,md This is the second book on "Exceptional Americans" by former newspaper man and conservative political blogger Don Surber. Many of its characters are well known, like Edison and Ford. But, as in his first book, most are not. Yet, without these largely unheralded men and women it is hard to imagine America or even the world as it is today. The characters themselves are well drawn and perhaps more immediate than those in the previous book, being closer to us in time and influence on our daily lives. In his choice of subject and descriptive prose, Surber has upped his own game and produced more of that product for which he is so respected among those who have kept up with him, deep insight into a moral tale expressed with almost poetic brevity. This book is also important today because it carries within it the elation of success these people achieved, not by deception and cruelty or luck, as is the common propaganda meme of many who profess to hate the word "profit" while in reality being totally dependent on it, but by hard work and above all, perseverance against great odds. That American ideal is found repeatedly in these short pages, all of which are not only fun to read, but often produce a sense of humility and gratitude for the country that created it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I Don't Recommend By SpaxyDaxy This should have been called "So You're WONDERING About RV Living"... Because it was not a guide, there were no "hacks" and it wasn't informative. I've found more information on RV'ing from blogs and general searches on the internet. It's numbered and each topic start off with something like "Don't Expect to Live in Luxury", then a paragraph about how you have to budget. A lot of it I could have just supposed on my own. It was also annoying that it assumed that because I want to live in an RV I must be a retired empty nester who owns a home. Most guides of this kind come from that perspective. I have a full-time job that I will be doing from the RV, no kids, I rent and I'm under 40 y.o. So a lot of it was about finding a storage space for all the belongings I've picked up from over the years (not me), and included things like "you may want to pick up a part-time job along the way...". It didn't really address the Wi-Fi situation, or how to choose an RV. A good majority of the population uses Wi-Fi more than stopping off at a coffee shop to "check in". It was very off-putting to someone who wants to seriously research RV'ing and I don't recommend it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. No fluff By Louis Reid Quality writing. Informative. Many basics and good source to start with excellent overview.. I would be willing to read more by this author. Things included are park fee, how to hook up, live in certain conditions etc. I am traveler and like living in parks as RV.

A century ago, a Philadelphia philanthropist sponsored a series of journeys to the American West to document Native American cultures and traditions. The Wanamaker Expeditions, conducted between 1908 and 1913, visited Crow Agency, Montana, near the site of the Battle of Little Bighorn. In words and images, the expeditions recorded aspects of the tribal lifestyle that were rapidly disappearing as Native Americans were pressured to assimilate into mainstream society. This book offers fascinating glimpses of life during that transitional period among the Crow, Blackfeet, Cheyenne, Dakota, and other tribes of the northern plains. The Wanamaker Expeditions organized a gathering of Native American chiefs from across the country for an event known as The Last Great Indian Council. This volume offers a fascinating record of speeches from the occasion along with the participants' renditions of folkloric tales and their firsthand accounts of Custer's Last Stand. Best of all, 80 historic photographs by Dr. Joseph K. Dixon offer a stunning gallery of scenes from Native American life, including reenactments of ceremonies and portraits of leaders in traditional regalia.

Excellent Quality and as Close to the Real Story as you can get By Thunderwear I bought this hardback book used and when it arrived it was like brand new! Pages are thicker than normal and excellent quality hardback. Loved the abundance of old photos from the Wanamaker expedition. In addition, the different stories from the actual scouts that were at the Little Bighorn was interesting - interesting to hear the differing vantage points. Quick easy read because the photos really move it along. A valued book for my collection.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Basic Knowledge of the Invasion Can Be Learned From this Book By E. M. Wilson To fully understand all aspects of the Normandy invasion and the few critical weeks following June 6th would take the reading of several thousand pages of well-researched text. An appreciation of the basic facts of that invasion can be learned in much less of a reading, and if you are willing to settle for just the fundamentals, this book will be sufficient for your needs.

It is a quick read and gives you great information. I recommend you also buy the author's other booklet "Your First Trip To Angeles" (also short and only $3) and read them back-to-back for an even better overview of the Angeles City and Philipina girl scene. Maybe the best part is to go to the author's blog (listed in the booklets) and get caught up on the entire SE Asia scene.
