"Memoirs by Proxy" is a series of memoirs, including the author's own. For her parents memoirs she draws on the thousands of letters and documents they had kept, beginning before they married in 1941. He was an Iowa farmer who became the Legal Vice President of Eastern Airlines. She was a New Hampshire typist who became his sophisticated and charming wife.
The author examines parents and grandparents and great-grandparents in the context of their generations. She then goes on to reveal her reactions to growing up with a father who was seldom at home and a mother who took her children on an extended field trip all over the United States, leaving them with relatives for extended periods of time.
As she grows to adulthood, the author finds her mother more and more difficult to be around, and her mother is unaccepting of the problems of her grandchild who experiences a catastrophic mental illness.
Mental illness is a main theme of this book, but there are sub-themes of religion, as well as the failings of the medical and social arenas. The author describes her struggles to understand and to help her mother, and is rewarded by knowing it was the right thing to do to have her mother live at her home for the last year of her life.
Reading through thousands of letters and documents, author Beth Harlan Greb had the experience of meeting her parents and brother again in the context of their time. Memoirs by Proxy is a window to the past; a narrative that looks at the author's preceding generation filled with lessons for the present one.

Fascinating Read By bookworm For Beth Harlan Greb, the death of her mother after a year of in-home Hospice care gave her the freedom to tackle the task of writing her parents' memoirs. She had many questions about her parents and older brother, all of whom had been like elusive enigmas either in their absences or reserved characters. By drawing on her own memories, thoroughly researching old letters and documents, and connecting with family and friends who had known her parents and her only brother who died in his twenties, she was able to put together a more complete story that made sense of who they were and how they helped form the woman she has become.Anyone can understand the desire to know where they come from, and Beth does a superb job of telling the story of her parents' lives and her own while pointing out the many cultural influences that affected all of our families in America during the 20th Century from World Wars I and II to the cultural revolution of the 60s and 70s, from religious beliefs and practices to our understanding and treatment of the mentally ill, and much more. With humor and wit, Beth shows us how she went from hating and resenting her mother and striving to be the complete opposite of her to finding reconciliation and understanding of her mother's own struggles in life, and ultimately loving her dearly. This book is a fascinating read, and besides learning much about the early airline industry, travel, and coping with mental illness, you may just learn a few helpful things about loving and appreciating the family you have been born into.

Great First Book About the Author's Parents and Their Place in American History By histbuff This is a remarkable first book by an author coming to grips with the lives of her parents and their place in the sweep of twentieth century America. Beth Greb clearly demonstrates how difficult it is for each generation to understand those that come before them. Her father was a farm boy from Iowa who grew up to be the chief counsel for Eastern Airlines, with its founder Captain Eddie Rickenbacker as his mentor. Her mother, also from modest circumstances, transitioned from life as a sweet young typist to a cosmopolitan but increasingly bitter woman. Beth Greb examines the lives of her parents through her childhood experiences and through the letters and photos they left behind. In doing so, she bares her joys and great disappointments in life. The heartbreaking story of Beth's mentally ill daughter and the way her parents and husband deal with it add further depth to the story. From her parents' generation, through World War II and after, back to hers, and then forward to those of her children and grandchildren, Memoirs by Proxy presents a very personal perspective on American history.
