The first half of the book is pedagogically significant since it deals with important historical events that took place during the Revolutionary War. The second part deals with a 20 year environmental battle in the quaint little town of Naugatuck Connecticut. The battle was over a valuable historical lot (called Gunntown) that some government officials believed should be demolished and used for municipal purposes. In other words, they wanted to transmogrify a historical landmark into a soccer field instead of preserving it for passive open space.And insofar as the government officials were concerned, “saving Naugatuck’s natural habitat was not a priority!” Just keep that in mind when you read this book!The author, Len Yannielli and many others fought valiantly to prevent this lot from being destroyed by these ruthless officials. Again I’ll reiterate,” read the book for details,” because it’s a heck of a story.It is utterly amazing that so many people from Naugatuck Connecticut are aloof to this piece of Revolutionary War history.“Hurry Down Gunntown,” the saga of the Stolen Boy was indeed a lost history that was newly discovered not too long ago, thanks to Len Yannielli, who along with his wife Christine brought this amazing story to fruition.With meticulous research done at Wesleyan University and the Connecticut State Library in Hartford, Yannielli took an otherwise lost history and made it relevant for today’s readers. He attempts to make (what appears to be) a wide leap, connecting today’s Environment Movement with the underlining themes of this story. And with success, Yannielli was able to utilize the connections he discovered to save the very land that is now known as the Gunntown Passive Park and Nature Preserve. With this story in hand, which armed him with leverage, he was able to prevent Gunntown Park from being turned into a soccer field. But, of course, he didn’t accomplish this feat alone. He had help from freedom fighting environmentalist from all over Naugatuck, who fought and lobbied against the status quo politicians for over 20 years.And let me tell you, you will be in for a treat because there is enough town hall drama for a major motion picture. If you liked Kramer vs. Kramer then you will dig this book.To his credit, Yannielli channels the legacy of a slave’s valor and a young man’s desperation. Using their story to fuel the cause, saving a piece of land, and preserving its history, in spite of the greed, malice and merciless shenanigans perpetrated by these local neoliberal politicians.Insofar as the nuts and bolts in this book goes, Yannielli shares an intriguing story about this kidnapped young boy named Chauncey Judd, who was captured by British Tories. The Tories took the young Judd through a long grueling trek through parts of Southern CT, and to their surprise, they ended up in a standoff against a slave named Tobiah. And wouldn’t you know it; Tobiah (with utter heroics only rivaled by the likes of Captain America) ends up rescuing the boy, risking his own life even though he owes the young Chauncey Judd nothing.This is a story that demonstrates what the definition of humanity really is. Tobiah had the guts and grit to stand up for what was just even though justice was denied him. And in-so-doing, nearly 240 years later, his fight became the raison d’être for a passive park that was almost destroyed. Tobiah also left a legacy for an environmental movement that stands for freedom and justice for all the citizens of Naugatuck Connecticut.Len Yannielli explains throughout, that if we preserve our environment, we save our history. And if we save our history, we’ll secure our future for generations to come.
