The unique perspective of this book--Dr. Macdonald is VietNam War combat veteran, Episcopal priest, and scholar--makes it at once insightful and provocative. Apart from the wide reading and impressive learning of the author, the book seeks to avoid glib assertions and simplistic answers to one of America's wars that still defies a superficial summary. Dr. Macdonald can acknowledge the folly of some of America's policymakers and politicians without impugning the staggering heroism and sacrifices of so many American troops who served and fought in VietNam. He knows. He was there. This book adds a needed, and valuable, perspective.

About the Author Heyward H. Macdonald was commissioned a Lieutenant of Artillery, United States Army, upon graduation from U.Va in 1964 and served as an Army Ordinance Officer in Vietnam at the forward firebase of the First Infantry Division in 1966 and 1967. He has two Master’s Degrees and became a student of the psychology and spirituality of Vietnam Veterans while earning a doctorate at Virginia Theological Seminary. Dr. Macdonald has worked through the VA to help some veterans of this war come to terms with their issues resulting from their VietNam service. He was an Episcopal Priest and Educator in Virginia and Maryland for 32 years, and with his older son returned to Vietnam for a month in 1999 to travel throughout the country. He reports that he was stunned to find he was welcomed by old adversaries literally with open arms. Dr. Macdonald served the Osher Institute at the University of Virginia for seven years on the board of directors and continues as an instructor and lecturer. He also enjoys teaching as a substitute at the Miller School of Albemarle and lives near Charlottesville with his wife, Sandy.

By Fred This is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the VietNam War, not only from the perspective of a combat veteran, but as a seminal factor in the evolution of our American political and social viewpoints and values. Incisive and grounded not only in personal experience, but broad intellectual thoughtfulness. This book will bring home to the reader a truth that, despite our experiences in every major military undertaking since World War II, we as a nation have yet to learn, namely that we can never really win another nation's civil war, because every civil war is rooted not only in political differences, but in a long history of tribal rivalry, if not outright hatred. All our troops and all our military hardware cannot fix centuries of tribal conflict.

By chris karls This short, easy to read book is complete with questions for additional consideration and a perfect springboard into further study on this subject. Dr. Macdonald makes a compelling argument that we’ve neglected or perhaps never learned completely those lessons taught by our handling of the Vietnam War. Today, hundreds of thousands of Vietnam vets suffer not only the loss of limbs and haunting emotional scars, but perhaps more profoundly by the lack of appreciation from their country and being told they failed their nation and the “Greatest Generation” before them. This book is sobering with lessons learned through the raw unfolding of real life experience contrast with foreign policy and domestic implications seemingly ignored by senior leaders to this day. As a retired Colonel and avid reader of military history and public policy, this book is among my “must read” recommendations.
