The American companion to A History of the World in 100 Objects, a fresh, visual perspective on the Civil WarFrom a soldier’s diary with the pencil still attached to John Brown’s pike, the Emancipation Proclamation, and the leaves from Abraham Lincoln’s bier, here is a unique and surprisingly intimate look at the Civil War.Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer sheds new light on the war by examining fifty objects from the New-York Historical Society’s acclaimed collection. A daguerreotype of an elderly, dignified ex-slave; a soldier’s footlocker still packed with its contents; Grant’s handwritten terms of surrender at Appomattox—the stories these objects tell are rich, poignant, sometimes painful, and always fascinating. They illuminate the conflict from all perspectives—Union and Confederate, military and civilian, black and white, male and female—and give readers a deeply human sense of the war.

From Booklist *Starred Review* This excellent collection of 50 Civil War artifacts is accompanied by beautifully written and incisive essays by acclaimed historian Holzer. Timed for publication to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, the book’s 50 artifacts have been well selected in an effort to emphasize the personal, human aspects of the conflict. The contents of a footlocker belonging to a Union officer are both informative and eerily intimate. A faded daguerreotype of an elderly slave seems to imbue him with both dignity and courage. A lithograph printed by the virulently anti-Lincoln New York World attempts to stoke fears of miscegenation during the 1864 political campaign. A letter written by a New Yorker who chose to fight for the Confederacy is both passionate and poignant, considering that he later gave his life for the cause. For both Civil War buffs and general readers, this collection should be a treasure. --Jay Freeman
Review “In his new book, The Civil War in 50 Objects, Harold Holzer uses pictures of a fascinating menagerie of Civil War-related items to distill what historian Eric Foner calls in his introduction a conflict that ‘permanently affected the future course of the development of the United States. Holzer handles the task with ease, showcasing the era through such artifacts as a pair of slave’s shackles sized for the wrists of a child and a copy, signed by Abraham Lincoln, of the manuscript for the 13th Amendment..”—The Washington Post “Packaged in an unusually high-quality edition, this book is the next best thing to viewing the artifacts in person or, given Holzer’s thorough explanation of the history of each object, it might be even better.”—The Seattle Times “Holzer's essays educate and entertain, folding in noteworthy asides…. Holzer pieces [the objects] together to create a compelling story of the people who lived during the bloodiest war in American history — a war that jumped the boundaries of the battlefield to spark a race riot on July 10, 1863.”—The Chicago Tribune “The Civil War in 50 Objects is a collection of deeply researched essays by the Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer. Mr. Holzer examines war-era artifacts culled from the collection at the New-York Historical Society, where he is a Roger Hertog Fellow, to get at a deeper truth about the single most defining event in American history.”—New York Observer “Holzer, working through the archives of the New-York Historical Society, unearths treasures, if sometimes grim ones. Holzer’s choice of objects is spot-on, and the anecdotes they occasion are even more so, particularly when he turns to little-commemorated episodes such as the valiant charge of 14 New York dragoons against a much larger Confederate force (it did not end well for the dragoons) and the effect of the Union blockade on school primers in the South. A valuable addition to the popular literature of the Civil War, well-conceived and packaged.”—Kirkus

Excellent book, very thought provoking By Ionia Froment When I first saw this book, I thought it might be rather short and simple and mostly pictures. I was thrilled to see that I was wrong. The author offers a detailed explanation of each object, often relating the objects to other historical facts of the time period they came from.I learned a lot of things from reading this that I had not been aware of before and I liked that the book had a somewhat conversational tone. This made it more like talking to someone of knowledge about the objects in question rather than just reading a description.I think sometimes we forget the value of objects and the stories they can tell about our history and where we came from. This book is a reminder of those who came before us and what they left behind as a legacy for us to remember and teach our children. This was interesting, compelling and overall just a very well written and thoughtful look back at the days before in our human history. I would recommend this to anyone that has a fascination with the Civil War, or history in general. One of my favourite books on the subject this year. This review is based on a digital review copy provided by Netgalley and the publisher.

My only complaint is that there’s nothing in the pictures to help the reader put the artifacts into perspective size-wise. Dimensions aren’t included in all the accompanying explanations and it’s hard to judge the size of some of the artifacts displayed just from the picture.

History rewritten By Hung-Tak Lee One almost could say that the Civil War history is rewritten by descriptions ofobjects at the New-York Historical Society: "(p. 323)In a single day, a controversialpolitician (Lincoln) had morphed into a second George Washington...Foes who dared to whisperthat they were glad of his death were beaten to death on the streets."The author and the Society somehow leave the readers with an impressionthat John Brown in "The John Brown Song" (pp. 34-35)is John Brown ofHarper's Ferry. John Brown in the John Brown Song isn,t the John Brownof a Massachusetts militia battalion stationed at Fort Warren in BostonHarbor in the spring of 1861? That jovial Scotchman who happen have thesame name as that of Harper's Ferry hero. Perhaps, I am wrong. I need anedification.
