Review "Maine Outdoor Adventure Guide is a welcome surprise! This well-crafted and comprehensive field companion remembers to remind readers why they wanted to explore the Pine Tree State in the first place!" (American Road Magazine)"Equally divided between trips on foot, by bike, and a combination, explorations aplenty await adventurers of all interests and abilities, from Deboullie to Damariscotta to Donnell Pond." (Maine Sunday Telegram)The Maine Outdoor Adventure Guide is a trip-oriented guide, with each entry focusing on a specific activity at a particular location: biking the Acadia Carriage Roads, climbing Bigelow Mountain, or canoeing the Magalloway River, for example. The book's intent is to present a series of trips that could comprise an entire summer of exploration or be stretched out over years. Combined, the trips represent a broad-based discovery of the entire state of Maine. Maps, clear directions, and pertinent information about what you can expect to encounter are included for each trip.

John and Josh Christie share with readers all the wondrous outdoor activities available in Maine, that mythical but powerfully real personification of “The Wild, Wild East.” The Maine Outdoor Adventure Guide is written with palpable verve and a can-do spirit along with very detailed instructions on how to get the most out of your outdoor Maine adventure, whether that adventure is a morning or month long opportunity. Many chapters also refer the reader to a website or websites for more information and locations. Chock full of useful information, the book is divided into three major sections: Part I “On Foot,” Part Two “On the Water’” and Part Three “On Wheels.” Every reader will find trips or wonders to suit their interests. I found the discussion of waterfalls (especially the “Wondrous” ones of Angel and Moxie Falls) and sea kayaking gems to be of particular interest. There are many, many places and trips described that were totally new to me and I have wandered the state with great pleasure for many decades. This is a book you will enjoy for years to come and delight in planning and executing and remembering the adventures you eventually take, stimulated from reading it over and over. It will excite and energize you and make you want to enjoy more of the great state of Maine in all its glory. The Christies write with a rare joy, you feel their excitement and pleasure at every turn and that joy is truly contagious. Read this work and you will share their enthusiasm, knowledge and amazing spirit of adventure. It’s a “true keeper.” Don’t miss it.

A Marvelous Guide to Maine By fred hill The Christies' outdoor adventure guide to Maine is a must-have, must-read, must-use book for all residents and visitors who want to hike, bike, kayak or otherwise explore the state's wondrous natural treasures - its rivers and lakes, low hills and high mountains, accessible islands, etc. There's no better, common-sense guide to "how to get they-ah from he-ah" and enjoy Maine's outdoors.John and Josh Christie, experienced adventurers and professional writers, have hit all these trails, all these waters, explored all these short and longer trips. And they offer concise, practical and well-written advice on accessible and attractive places for people of all ages.A brief example: Preparing to explore one of Maine's many rivers, the Androscoggin, the Christies provide not only key directions to an easy 5-mile kayak trip, but also wise counsel: "If you're new to kayaking, it's worth remembering that a long paddling trip can be made a lot easier and less tiring if you constantly remind yourself to exert more pressure on your paddle by pushing with your upper hand than pulling with your lower. It may seem counter-intuitive, but ... believe me, it'll pay off."Fred Hill, Arrowsic, Maine.

By Edward Hottenstein I have been a fan of John Chrstie and his son Josh's weekly articles in the Sunday Portland Telegram Outdoor section for years. When I read that there was to be a book describing many of their adventures, I was ecstatic. Couldn't wait to have so much information available in one volume. I have certainly not been disappointed. This is a wonderful reference guide for anyone loving the great Maine outdoors. Their descriptions of not only the hike, but directions of how to reach the trail head or boat launch facilities is terrific. I especially like John's concept of the "warm up" hikes to get one's self in shape for the more difficult hikes ahead is a real plus. Actually those "warm up" hikes are in themselves a great outing. At about $13, this book has got to be the best bargain for anyone interested in the Maine outdoors.
