Tales of princes and princesses held captive in castle dungeons, rescued by a knight in shining armour and then live happily ever after. I certainly did. My childish dreams around castles soon turned to curiousity and interest as fairy tales were replaced by history text books … and here they were again! CASTLES!Naturally I am still drawn to anything castles. Gary McKraken has written several books on castles – this is his second on the Castles of England. I like his books and this one is no exception. What really captured my imagination here is that this book starts with a castle whose beginning is tied to the historic and iconic date of 1066! Several other castles in the book also have that pedigree.I continue , to be amazed at just how many castles there are in England - some are grand, some in ruins, but they all have a story worth a read and a visit. If you’re a history buff like I am, or a traveler looking for your next experiential vacation, you have to read McKraken’s book on the Castles of England Volume II and while at it pickup volume I - I read that one too and its McKraken Good!
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Handy and Enjoyable By Moon Cat I bought this because it had both Arundel and Warwick Castles which I visited and loved greatly. I wish I had read this book before going as I missed other nearby castles which I would have enjoyed. The author gives a short synopsis of each castle along with a photo. Even better he goes into the transportation nearby, whether bus, rail, walking or car. Also contact information is given. The history is given in a light enjoyable fashion, and even a few ghosts and legends are thrown in. Nice to plan your travels. Not a in depth history source.
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Castles! By Jo Etta Hill I very much enjoyed reading about these castles and especially this book having pictures of them. It makes we want to visit. That said, the advent of self-publishing is a wonderful things allowing pretty much anyone to publish without a huge outlay of funds up front. BUT why don't authors have at least one or two other people (anyone at all) read through their books to catch spelling and grammar errors before they put it out for the public?
