On August 6, 2011—three months after members of Navy SEAL Team Six killed Osama Bin Laden—Taliban forces took down a United States helicopter, call sign "Extortion 17." The attack killed the Air National guard crew, seven unidentified members of the Afghan military, and seventeen members of Navy SEAL Team Six—warrior brothers from the same Team that had killed Osama Bin Laden just ninety days prior. Don Brown, a former U.S. Navy JAG officer stationed at the Pentagon and a former Special Assistant United States Attorney, re-creates the wartime action, tells the life stories of the elite warriors our nation lost on that day, and tears apart the official military explanation of the incident contained in the infamous Colt Report, which reveals either gross incompetence or a massive cover-up. Were the seven Afghan soldiers aboard that helicopter really undercover Taliban who either maneuvered the chopper within easy range of being shot down or sabotaged it from within? Were the SEALS sacrificed on the altar of political correctness and deliberately flown into a known Taliban hot zone? Through a serious examination of the evidence, and the lack thereof, Brown tackles the issues of the case as only an experienced military prosecutor can.Author Don Brown, a former United States Navy JAG officer stationed at the Pentagon, and former Special Assistant United States Attorney, is the author of ten military and legal novels, including the nationally bestselling novels Treason and The Malacca Conspiracy. He lives and practices law in Charlotte, North Carolina.

16 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Totally disappointed. By Mark A Carter When I purchased this book, I was hoping to gain a better understanding about what happened to Extortion 17. Instead, I read outrageous conspiracy theories and complete lack of knowledge regarding the pilots on the helicopter. CW4 David Carter had over 1000 hours flying the CH47 in Iraq doing the same type of deliveries as he was flying the night he was killed by the Taliban. The majority of those flights were at night requiring NVG equipment to safely make the deliveries. In addition, he was an instructor pilot in the mountains of Colorado who was responsible for training many American pilots, in addition, to many pilots from NATO countries. The training was not limited to day time flights. Finally, I would appreciate the author understanding the rules of night flying. The pilot controlling the helicopter did not talk on the radio. The pilot controlling the helicopter concentrated on the instruments to follow the flight plan to safely deliver the cargo of special operators to the landing zone. I was totally disappointed in the continual reference to the inexperienced junior pilot who was really a foot soldier piloting the helicopter. The author should get the facts right before writing a book that tries to sell a conspiracy theory.http://www.airspacemag.com/military-aviation/final-flight-extortion-17-180953947/?no-ist

As a retired Aviator who and who was on Active duty in Afghanistan when this happened, I thought the author could have done a little more research into his facts and investigative work. He instead stuck to repeating himself in each chapter after the point was already made.
11 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Terrible book! I agree with several other poor reviews. By Ashley L. Urban Terrible book! I agree with several other reviews. Full of factually inaccurate information and irrational accusations. The author did a very poor job of research prior to writing and publishing this book.In one portion of the book, while the author is trying to make an embellished point, he claims that no MH-47’s have ever been shot down in Afghanistan. When in fact, multiple MH-47s were shot down in one battle during the Battle of Takur Ghar (Robert’s Ridge). Maybe the author should read a good book as part of his research. A recommendation would be “The Battle for Robert’s Ridge.”I would not recommend this book to anyone. Especially anyone who has ever served in the Army Aviation community. It will only upset you.
