Boon, an aging gunfighter, looks back on his time as the protector of a Mexican village and as a cowboy fighting off rustlers on a Texas cattle ranch. He tells the first story to his son Clay and the second to his grandson Max. Clay grows up to become an unbeaten stud poker player in 1920s New Orleans and Max to be a famous Hollywood actor in the 1950s and 60s.. Gradually both of them learn that Boon's personal history might be a fiction designed to disguise his role in a murderous western past. As a result, Clay and Max set off on separate journeys to find the truth about themselves and their violent heritage. Drawing on the narratives of the Steve McQueen films "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Cincinnati Kid," and on the complex intersection of an actor's on-screen and real-life identities, "Long Before the stars Were Torn Down" vividly portrays the collision of male courage and uncertainty in three different eras of American history.

The story covers three generations and investigates the idea of truth ( in this case familial) in stories or histories. He uses some culturally familiarplot motifs. Readers may recognize these. I found the reliance on old stories a comfort rather than a distraction which speaks well for Wainwrights craftsmanship.
