I have worked extensively with family members and fellow survivors for the past 9 1/2 years in fundraising and offering financial and emotional support. With that being said, I truly felt as though I knew all there was to know about the fire as well as the people it affected. I have lived and breathed it since the very first night. I was wrong. I have been asked countless times to talk about that night and tell people what "really happened". I now intend to point them toward this book.It is a comprehensive and educational account of the facts surrounding the fire and the aftermath. You could read hundreds of newspaper articles (and there are certainly hundreds) that would not give you the concise and accurate information found here.I applaud John Barylick and his fellow attorneys for this daunting undertaking and the hard work they put in in order to bring some sense of comfort to those affected. Attorneys are often vilified for "taking advantage" of a situation. Those involved in this case (the majority) did it for the right reasons. Without their perseverance and tenacity, so many of the victims' families and survivors would have added financial decimation to their already devastating emotional and physical losses.I encourage you to educate yourself by reading this book. Remember the loss of life and those who will live with the physical and emotional scars forever. Remember what happened, and honor those lost, by helping to make sure it never happens again.

By Ron Geren As a building code consultant, I would make this a "must read" for architects, contractors, interior designers, building owners, business owners, fire and building inspectors, attorneys, insurance inspectors, and anybody associated with the design, construction, operation, maintenance, and regulation of buildings.It is an anatomy of an event that should not have happened. The book explains the ignorance, arrogance, negligence, and greed that came together to create a setting that, once ignited, would kill and injure so many.Particularly interesting is the detailed post-event posturing of key players and the ensuing legal battles.The author adds sufficient technical detail to explain why things happened the way they did--why the fire was so intense, why the smoke was so thick, and why the exits failed.And finally, the personal stories, which make The Station Nightclub fire more than just a statistic in the history books. The personal stories add a human dimension to the event that should cause people to think that the decisions they make could have consequences that can affect the lives of others.

Swanton The day after the Station Fire, I remember thinking :"How could 96 people (later, 100) die in a nightclub fire in America in this day and age?". This book answers it. It answers it so clearly, and with such an emphasis on the banality of greed and laziness that set the tragedy in motion, I feel like I was naive before reading it. It leaves you feeling that it is probably going to happen again somewhere else.The description of the fire is riveting. The stories of individuals that night will leave you saddened, impressed, and infuriated. So will the stories about the actions of individulas in the days, months and years following the fire. The tone deaf cowardice and selfishness, sometimes bordering on evil, of some of the people responsible is stunning. The one exception here is Daniel Biechele, the band manager who unwittingly set the event in motion, who took full responsibility for his part from almost the moment it happened. Sadly, his story is the rare one here.It is not all gloom and doom, however. The inspiring stories of the survivors, and the amazing ability to forgive of survivors, and some of the victims' families, adds a bit of sunlight into an otherwise dark tale.The book is told in a fast paced, informative style that covers every aspect of the fire, from what led up to it, how the building's layout played a part, to the science of fire and how it was a lopsided race between the quick-moving fire and the people trying to escape it.The author has a personal stake in the story(he represented victims), but even with a few asides that leave you no doubt as to his true feelings for some of the particulars, he delivers a pretty straightforward, compelling and excellent accounting of a terrible tragedy. An accounting that one hopes will act as a cautionary tale for future situations similar to the one that led up to this fire. However, after reading how this horrific night in Rhode Island happened, I am doubtful.

The sinking of the ship is still nearly as controversial now as it was over 100 years ago, and the drama is just as compelling. The Titanic was neither the first nor last big ship to sink, so it’s clear that much of its appeal stems from the nature of ship itself. Indeed, the Titanic stands out not just for its end but for its beginning, specifically the fact that it was the most luxurious passenger ship ever built at the time. In addition to the time it took to come up with the design, the giant ship took a full three years to build, and no effort or cost was spared to outfit the Titanic in the most lavish ways. Given that the Titanic was over 100 feet tall, nearly 900 feet long, and over 90 feet wide, it’s obvious that those who built her and provided all of its famous amenities had plenty of work to do. The massive ship was carrying thousands of passengers and crew members, each with their own experiences on board, and the various amenities offered among the different classes of passengers ensured that life on some decks of the ship was quite different than life on others. Almost everyone is familiar with what happened to the Titanic during its maiden voyage and the tragedy that followed, but the construction of the Titanic is often overlooked, despite being an amazing story itself, one that combined comfort and raw power with the world’s foremost technological advances. Nonetheless, the seeds of the Titanic’s destruction were sown even before it left for its first and last journey. Similarly, the drama involved with the sinking of the Titanic often obscures the important aftermath of the disaster, particularly the several investigations conducted on both sides of the Atlantic that sought to figure out not only why the Titanic sank but future changes that could be made in order to protect ships and passengers in the future. In fact, the course of the investigations was interesting in itself, especially since the British and Americans reached wildly different conclusions about what went wrong and led to the ship’s demise. Naturally, the intense interest in the Titanic also meant that there would be great efforts made to locate the wreck. In fact, the first searches for the wreck began in the days after the giant ship went down, but given how far down it sank to the floor of the Atlantic and the fact that the ship had inaccurately transmitted its location shortly before it sank, initial efforts were doomed. As it turned out, the most famous wreck in the world would not be located until 1985, over 70 years after the ship sank that fateful April night.

Succinct but informative account with lots of photos By Librarian Short enough not to be tedious, but long enough to be enjoyably informative, this no-nonsense account provides a brief but satisfying overview of the launch, sinking, rescue, aftermath, and discovery of the Titanic. Numerous photographs and illustrations accompany the text.Given the number of Titanic books available, however, one must ultimately ask several questions of this or any other new Titanic book: In light of other books I own, do I really need yet another general overview of the Titanic tragedy? Likely not. Does this one provide something new, or offer some keen insights not found in the others? Not really. Does this one cover the human drama in a way not done by others? No.A series of short (40-50 page) books about aspects of the Titanic tragedy were previously issued in 2014 by Charles River and ultimately collected in one large comprehensive 299-page volume titled, "The Titanic: The History and Legacy of the World's Most Famous Ship." This seems to be a shorter, more tightly-written and better-organized, no frills version of that cumulative treatment; if, therefore, you already own that one, you may not feel a need for this one. Of course, if you already own almost ANY other basic treatment, you probably don't really need this one. But if you don't own other versions, this one IS worth considering as a solid, introduction to the entire Titanic story.In all honesty, however, I acquired this ebook (primarily for the photographs) when it was being offered for free, and my rating does reflect, in large measure, my satisfaction with it at that "price." At its regular price of $2.99, I would not have given it a tumble. If you're debating with yourself as to whether or not to acquire this book, and if you've never read Walter Lord's dramatic, classic account of the event titled "A Night to Remember," I would recommend applying the cost of this ebook toward the purchase of that one. Although old, it's the one against which all subsequent Titanic accounts are still measured and the one which every Titanic buff MUST read.

Happily Steven Levi’s SANTA ZANNI was the latter. I began with no idea what to expect or who I was going to meet. I finished with ears and mind full of as marvelous a group of zanies as ever performed with a Commedia dell’Arte company, and I knew a whole lot more about the how and why of California politics between 1910 and 1920 than when I crossed into the city limits.The characters are sharp and true, drawn with incisive, literate and witty descriptions, reminding me of Steinbeck. In a few vivid strokes we understand the character’s background and how it forms her (or his) reasoning, perceptions and values. And like Steinbeck, the characters who live in Santa Zanni live in real situations and real politics of the time, not the predictable ones of the Commedia invoked earlier. How can anyone resist Rudolph after Levi’s introduction?“He was called Rudolph the Red because he looked Russian. Or Bohemian, someone who was born east of any civilized part of Europe. German or Austrian he was not, and Giovanni, the barber from Palermo, who had been in Santa Zanni since 1906, said Rudolph wasn’t Greek or Portuguese, so that didn’t leave much of Europe for Rudolph to call home.So he was Rudolph the Red, the foreign-looking, bearded gnome who called Santa Zanni home. His English was fluent and he used words most people only read in out-of-town newspapers. He also had an accent that was so thick you could pour it on your pancakes. He was always dressed in workman’s clothes and wore heavy black boots that were never shined but never looked scuffed either.”The story proceeds to reveal the growth of unions and railroads, the organization of farm laborers, woman suffrage, religious hypocrisy (and sincerity), and brothels, and ordinary families in a town “south of San Francisco.”I had a problem getting into the story because I had not been warned that the characters were not “real.” I couldn’t find Santa Zanni on a California map – which lead to a lot of other questions. So I e-mailed [the author] to ask about it. He replied that the book was specifically written to give students a snapshot of life in Northern California between 1910 and 1920 and that “almost all of the people and events happened somewhere in California during that time period. The historical background is true.” [The book] is a dramatic, interesting, memorable narrative, constructed as historical fiction, with accurate historical facts and people who feel very real, but are not historical persons. Storytelling is a great way to teach history.What more could anyone – student or not – want? Be warned about the fiction element, but ultimately, just enjoy and learn.

I loved reading it on my Kindle while lounging around on a cruise ship, before we got to the city, but that's about as far as its usefulness goes. It is pretty worthless for navigating around the city and finding things to do, because it lacks both pictures and maps. Pictures are useful to give you an idea of what you would see and maps are useful to get you there. It is also too dense in information to be useful in deciding what to see when you only have a day or two. Perhaps it would help to give a brief summary of the top ten items and then give more detailed descriptions of each item separately. Overall, it was interesting, but not very easy to use, since the only way to navigate through it is by reading from front to back.

However, when we went there in Jan 2009, we did not take the book. Descriptions were too superficial and it was not helpful for someone who was driving. A book such as The Rough Guide to the Dominican Republic as well as a large map are what you need once you are in the DR.

For this reason this particular guide could not really satisfy my need.

Every other book was old. I wanted up to date information and this book really doesn't cover much in the way of food safety, weather, specific tourist areas. Mostly a glossy over view of the country and museums.

Silent and Unseen is a memoir of a submariner’s life on a U.S. attack submarine during the Cold War by Capt. Alfred S. McLaren, an experienced submarine officer and nuclear attack submarine commander. He describes in riveting detail the significant events that occurred early in the Cold War during his seven years, 1958–65, on board three attack submarines: the USS Greenfish (SS 351), USS Seadragon (SSN 584), and USS Skipjack (SSN 585). He took part in the first submerged transit of the Northwest Passage, a Baffin Bay expedition, and, as commander of USS Queenfish (SSN 651), a North Pole expedition that completed the first survey of the entire Siberian Continental Shelf. McLaren’s stories and anecdotes offer a look at the development of attack-boat tactics and under-ice exploration techniques.

During the early high-risk years of the Cold War, submarines were continually at sea, and each reconnaissance and intelligence-collection mission was of potentially great value to the United States. The missions often required zeroing in on the potential enemy to collect the intelligence desired, generally within weapons range. Unlike a war patrol, the U.S. attack boat had to remain undetected, and then withdraw as silently and unseen as it's original approach.

Greenfish was one of the most successful Pacific diesel submarines when McLaren served aboard her as a watch and weapons officer. He then served as watch officer on the Seadragon when she became the first nuclear submarine to transit from the Atlantic to the Pacific via the Arctic Ocean. En route, she examined the underside of icebergs, conducted the first underwater survey and passage through the Northwest Passage, and surfaced at the North Pole.

McLaren concludes by recounting his experiences on board what was then the world’s fastest and most advanced submarine, USS Skipjack (SSN 585) during the Cuban Missile Crisis, two Cold War missions, and the very intensive and exciting period of new tactical and weapons development which followed to counter a rapidly emerging Soviet nuclear submarine threat.

Easton Second of a planned trilogy describing the author's career in submarines. Rather informally written and not always "politically correct." The intended audience appears to be fellow submariners since much of what is mentioned is described only "by name," and will not be familiar to a general audience.Well worth reading by anyone contemplating a career as a submariner. Describes difficult and potentially career or life ending situations that the author handled or endured with good luck, intelligence, hard work, stamina, good reactions, and sensitivity. Proud to have had him in "my" Navy. Lost a star only because of the limited audience.

I have read a large number of submarines stories and Silent and Unseen is one of the better told ones. Filled with rich detail and amusing anecdotes, the book ended all too quickly. I will be looking for the author's other writings.

Fred is a true American hero - U.S. Naval Academy; U.S. Navy nuclear attack submarine Captain during the Cold War; accomplished Arctic oceanographer; President of the prestigious Explorers Club; deep-sea mini-submarine designer and test pilot. So many intriguing stories from a world class explorer whose rich lifelong experiences positions him well to write this book. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. 3 1/2 stars: a delightful read By tregatt While I would not count Elizabeth Ashton's latest, "The Darcy Connection" as an example of her very best work, I'd have to admit: it really is a charming and enjoyable read."The Darcy Connection" follows the fortunes of Mr. Collins' two daughters, Charlotte and Eliza, as they navigate their way through a merciless London season. Both Charlotte and Eliza are of marriageable age; however Mr. Collins, now Bishop of Ripon, has not the means to secure either of his daughters a desirous match. Fortunately for Charlotte at least, her wealthy godmother is willing to sponsor a London season for her, sure that her extraordinary beauty will ensure her a brilliant match. Headstrong Eliza however accompanies her sister not because an equally brilliant match is expected for her so much as to remove her from the sphere of a smitten suitor whose parents oppose of their son's attachment to Eliza. Defiant, Eliza is resolved to show no interest in London swains and fashions -- that is until a dismissive remark from a certain gentleman causes her to rethink her stance...While quite the enjoyable and delightful read, Elizabeth Ashton did reuse many plot motifs and devices from previous novels -- like beautiful but remote elder sisters, and heroes who seem to disapprove of the heroine and who make initial cutting remarks that they later live to regret. So really, there was nothing terribly original or unique about "The Darcy Connection." On the other hand, it was a well crafted novel, full of thoughtfully depicted characters, that made for an absorbing and compelling read. So that even though I personally wished that Charlotte had been less of a cipher and that she had figured more vitally into the story at hand; and even though I thought that there was a missed opportunity not to have included Mr. Collins more into the plot, I will say that "The Darcy Connection" truly was a charming and delightful read.

I have enjoyed all of Ashton's books-- and this one is by far her best! Her writing is always top-notch, well-developed story lines, and well researched for the language and period. How can you not immediately love the heroine of the story who is named after her godmother, Elizabeth Darcy! and has similar character traits. Some of Ashton's characters from her previous books are sprinkled through out adding color and drama... even the dispicable George Warren, the angling, spiteful step-son of Caroline Warren, nee Bingley. Eliza is the 2nd daughter of the Collins' and like in P&P, she is not so beautiful as her elder sister so must get on by her other natural assets. I'll not spoil any of the story for you but know it is full of sweet romance, witty conversations, a clever maid!, handsome,exciting, rich men (both good and bad!) and even a Mr. Darcy sighting! I've been waiting for this new novel and am so glad to add it to my library. The subtle and some blatant similarities to P&P are entertaining and fun to recognize! I look forward to re-reading this at a more leisurely pace. This is a keeper.

Pleasurable Fun for the Fans By Tricia Huff That famously infamous power couple from "Pride and Prejudice", Mr. and Mrs. Collins, have grown into middle age and now have two grown daughters, Eliza and Charlotte, both unmarried, and like all Austen maidens, in need of a husband. A visit from Mrs. Collin's aunt, Lady Grandpoint, along with an entanglement between Eliza and the son of the local squire, generates the perfect excuse for a London season for the two girls. With great pleasure, Lady Grandpoint escorts Eliza and Charlotte to her London home. There the Grand Dame hopes that Charlotte's beauty will ensnare a man of fortune, as she looks for ways to quench Eliza's passions and pressure her to accept the advances of a respectable, but boorish, clergyman.Unbeknownst to the forthright Lady Grandpoint, for her two young companions, London is the place for secrets. The aloof and extraordinarily beautiful Charlotte does attract many admirers, but the coolness of her manners leads one to conclude that her heart is not easily touched. As Eliza watches with a careful eye and bets are placed at the aristocratic mens' clubs, all wonder, "Who will Charlotte choose?" It seems that for everyone there is money at stake.And Eliza herself is no slouch when it comes to keeping her own counsel. Eliza finds herself reluctantly attracted to the sharp and intelligent Bartholomew Bruton, while she struggles with her loyalty to the boy back home, with whom she is secretly engaged. The secret correspondence between the two, if it became known, would ruin her reputation, and her sister's by association. As if such entanglements are not enough to keep her busy, Eliza must guard the secret of just how she is coming into the extra pin money that is paying for the fashionable gowns she is wearing about town. This last secret alone threatens to destroy not just her sister's and her own reputations, but risks the position and prospects of her father, Bishop Collins.As the novel progresses, we learn more about the limits of Charlotte's restraint and watch Eliza grow to add sense to her sensibility. This is a clever play upon the sisterly relationships of Elinor and Marianne in Austen's "Sense and Sensibility," along with a bit of Jane and Elizabeth from "Pride and Prejudice." Aston's love for Austen shines through, but she never takes herself too seriously by trying to imitate too closely. Any serious fan of Jane Austen should find this sequel to be pleasurable fun.
