I loved all of the characters...well, okay...most of the characters (I guess it wouldn't be right to love the criminal/s)! I kept trying to figure out who the bad person/people might be, and that kept me gripped to the very end. The lead, Georgia, is someone you can't help but fall in love with. She is the kind of friend you want in your corner...smart, funny, beautiful, and humble. Can't wait for the next book in this series!

By Sue Foster I received this book in return for an honest review. I got this book yesterday afternoon and finished it the same day. That speaks volumes for my opinion of this book. The author has an unusual setting and a quirky sense of humor. Her heroine is at times determined and smart and at times ditzy just like all of us are. The mystery of whether there is a murder or who it is if there were murders keep people guessing. The subplot just adds to the questions. This was the first in the series. I will definitely buy the next one as well as try her other books. My one criticism is that the ending seemed rushed.

I thought it was fun that a reality show was used as the backdrop for the story. The author did a good job of making this book flow. It is a book that you will not want to put down as you are not only wanting to figure out who is doing the murdering but who will Georgia pick for love. In this book we have mystery, romance and humor all things to make a cozy mystery a fun book. I will be reading the next one in this series when it comes out.

The Long Way Home is a truly new take on the ever so done road trip book. I am always hesitant to read a road trip plot based book, because I feel like for the most part I have read them all before, although this road trip is much needed for these ladies and there is some self discovery involved.. you will not find anything cheesy.I loved each and every character. They each had qualities in them that were truly endearing and they also had qualities that made you groan and roll your eyes. However, they complimented each other well, there wasn't one person who you strongly disliked or who was going to cause a huge rift, that would create to awkward dramatic lull in the story. I must say though what is better than the story itself is McQuestion's talent to write realistically. Something I have always respected about her writing. There were moments when I would say out loud " oh my god, that is something I would Do!" or say, or think...So, this why I cannot say it enough, go read The Long Way Home and all other books by Karen McQuestion.PSI like this book so much, it is hard for me to even properly tell you how awesome it is.

Add the elements that these women are barely more than strangers, range in age from 20's - 70's, have conflicting personalities, and are all dealing with the loss of a loved one, and you have just a little of what Karen McQuestion does to put an authentic twist on a "done before" road trip plot.Jazzy is a ray of sunshine that Marnie, Laverne and Rita haven't seen in quite some time. When Marnie makes the decision to go to Las Vegas to reunite with the boy she helped raise, it's Jazzy's optimism that keeps the women moving forward both literally and figuratively. While I loved each of the characters for very different reasons, I must admit that Laverne is by far my favorite. I can picture the other three women rolling their eyes and becoming frustrated with this old woman but she does many things on the trip that I know I would do.What I love about Karen's novels is that she develops the characters throughout the story and you never really have them figured out until the end. The amazing thing about The Long Way Home was that I didn't just love the four main characters, I also found myself mourning for those they lost. Each individual story was powerful and moving without being over the top.I've only said this a handful of times in my years of reading, but I sincerely hope The Long Way Home goes from print to screen. There's nothing in this novel that wouldn't translate beautifully to a movie version, and I would be first in line to see it.I rate The Long Way Home a perfect five stars and recommend it for anyone who enjoys an adventurous, heartwarming book with strong female leads.

I'm just going to get to the point and tell you what I thought of it. I will say that upon reading the description the story sounded a little implausible. I didn't get how the author was going to randomly throw together a mish-mosh of women on a life altering road trip. She did lay the groundwork well in the story and bring the women together in a realistic (or at least somewhat more realistic way). I did enjoy following along on there journey and all the developments throughout in each character and in their relationships. I do say that towards the end I feel like the author tried to wrap things up a little to quickly, like she didn't know what to do with the characters after their road trip but all in all a very enjoyable read, especially considering the price.

You can be sure that whether you are considering, this the book will help you prepare for it. Whether it is how and when to purchase or rent an RV, through to explaining all the check-lists that are important at different stages of your journey. The lists takes into account what you might need before going on the road, setting up once you arrived at your destination, and finally even a breaking-down list. I would have never thought that there will be legal considerations, but there is, and it is all set out for you! Good safety tips as well. After all safety always comes first.

This book really shows you how to survive in a RV. It's got everything in here down to storage and money saving tips. I can truly see myself having a RV full time during my retirement years. Highly recommend this book to anyone thinking about getting one.

Great advice.. even for a trip By Paul P Whilst I am not planning of leaving society and living full time in an RV.. it has been a dream of mine (somehow also managed to convince my partner) to travel across country over the summer and really see what this great country has to offer.The book really helped in the initial stages with the whole.. 'can I afford it' bit. And then the whole preparation. We have not left yet.. but feel that we are in good stead.I particularly liked the 100+ tips to make life easier.. these things seem very sensible and can only come from experience (so good to learn from someone's mistakes).I have obviously read a lot of other resources (forums, books, websites) but this was likely one of the most comprehensive.

Breathtaking book By HB LEVESQUE Johansen is so good I've never bothered to review any of her previous books (I've read them all) because anyone who's read one has gone back for all she's written. She never disappoints. Her cast of characters continues to expand and evolve into their own books and this books main character, Catherine Ling, was introduced many years ago as a street waif determined to survive by any means possible and survive she does blossoming into a remarkable woman with incredible talents and skills who's main concern is to help those who are helpless and she never backs down and never gives up - she began as a lethal loner and over the course of her career she's managed to surround herself with an intriguing, colorful, deadly, dangerous, loving, devoted cast of characters. Each as unique and intriguing as Catherine is. Can't wait for more on Cameron, the first man to intrigue Catherine on an intimate level and a man with some very exceptional talents all his own. Johansen grabs you and draws you in on the opening pages and never lets go - once started I couldn't stop until the last page was turned. Great way to spend a weeknight and the rest of my weekend! Loved it and can't say enough good things about it...from a voracious reader in foggy San Francisco.

I have read all of Johansen's Books from her Romances to the Thrillers and I find that lately all her books seem very much a formula. I feel that because not only the plots of the stories but also the characters one-dimensional personalities and modes of speaking are all the same in all of this series books. I have always enjoyed her writing but now I find myself getting bored with it.

But Catherine, despite her feeling that she is a loner, has many more friends than she thought. When she realizes that her friends are at risk, one of the first people she contacts in Eve Duncan. But not in time to keep Jane from being hurt and needing Caleb to help her heal.Eve is assisted by Richard Cameron who is a sort of friend, sort of adversary who wants a relationship with Catherine. Like Catherine he is very, very competent and very, very dangerous. The villain Santos would go up against them if he was sane. But his actions prove that he is not. He keeps trying to attack those close to Catherine but Catherine and her allies keep foiling his plans. But the threat won't be over until Santos is dead and Catherine has no qualms about killing him if she can find him.This story was a lot about relationships and love. From the budding relationship Catherine has with the son who was stolen away from her for nine years to the relationship Eve has with her dead daughter Bonnie, relationships are at the core of this story. It takes a threat of the magnitude of Santos before Catherine realizes the number of bonds she has actually built.This wasn't a mystery since we knew the villain's name and intentions from the beginning but the tension came from wondering if he would manage to out-think and out-maneuver Catherine and her allies.This is the fourth book in the Catherine Ling series and was an excellent addition to the series.

About the Author Lynn Barber is an award-winning British journalist. Several collections of her interviews have been anthologised. She read English Literature at Oxford, worked for Penthouse magazine for seven years, then for the Sunday Express, Independent on Sunday, Vanity Fair, Observer and Sunday Times. I'm also rather disappointed that she is a self-confessed philistine. Doesn't seem to enjoy or even understand the arts. For someone who has grown up in the 60s, she is surprisingly conservative about many things...especially marriage. Her self-consciousness begins to grate after the first chapters. Seems she wants to deny she has a depressive personality which would explain many things rather than the trite and jolly explanations she gives. I have both collections of her interviews which I have read and reread often but reading her memoir left me feeling less admiration for her.

I'm from the same generation as Lynn Barber; I've reached the stage in my life when I know what I like and I'm not going to do anything anymore that I don't like. Well, not if I can help it anyway. One of the things I certainly no longer enjoy is reading interviews with actors. You trudge through yards and yards of newsprint only to *discover* that, yes, they love to play 'challenging parts' and, yes, they 'can't wait to work with the director again' and, oh yes, they prefer to keep 'their personal lives private'. And just like that, another half-hour of your precious life has disappeared down the plug-hole.One interviewer I always do read however, even when she's interviewing an actor, is of course the Demon Barber. And in this book we learn why her interviews always prove to be so interesting. Firstly, it's because she does her homework, spending a huge amount of time on research before the interview (so she won't ask the interviewee something they've been asked a hundred times before). She wastes not a second of precious interview time and refuses to do less than a one hour interview (she explains how nowadays even serious interviewers get trapped by the PR machine into flying half way round the world for a 15-minute slot with a star.) She always tapes her interviews (so perhaps 'a bouquet of wired barbs' would be a more accurate header) and spends at least a week writing them up.This book contains the background to a selection of interviews, all of which make fascinating reading, even the ones where people I like or admire come off rather badly (Martin Clunes and Rafa Nadal). A Curious Career also updates the reader on Barber's terrific memoir An Education. Lynn Barber is self-aware, occasionally acerbic (and therefore sometimes quite scary), intuitive, intelligent and she also comes across as devastatingly honest. Above all, she is genuinely interested in people. This book is highly recommended for anyone who feels the same.

Disappointing and self-reverential - not fun to read and nasty tone makes it ugly By NY Believer After all the review hype, I looked forward to reading this book, and I was terribly disappointed. Ms. Barber says that finding a husband is more important than any career - then never says why she continues to work (clearly for money, not for artistry). She hates interviewing actors, considering them beneath her for some reason - but she happily takes money for working with them. There are many rehashed, old interviews that we could have done without - there is a reason why she is unknown in the US, it's because she's not a great writer by any means. The nasty, judgemental sections about Martin Clunes and Rafael Nadal just show how little skill she has - clearly she likes to shock her audience, but it's really about her opinions of other people, the person being interviewed should be the star of the piece, but Barber makes it about herself. The chapter about Marianne Faithful is a hoot - as Barber goes out of her way to put down this icon, writing negative stuff at all times, then rehashes an old article which we are supposed to think is great (it's far from great, it's just ugly), and then she finally writes about Ms. Faithful talking to real journalists about Barber, something about apologizing to her? What for, we wonder - for Barber behaving unprofessionally and interrupting a photo shoot with David Bailey, as if Barber has something better to do? Like her "dinner with friends" is so vitally important that a photo shoot with 2 icons from the 60s should stop for her? WHAT?! Despite her lack of training or talent, Barber is so self-centered, she thinks the celebrities she interviews should just talk about her! You learn that Barber never had any training in journalism, just 7 years at Penthouse (hardly a great training ground for a WRITER, now perhaps as a photographer...) and she coasts from job to job on her connections. We can guess that, because her writing is terrible, nasty and often just boring. Having had this little sample of her "work," which she would NOT be doing if she could find a husband to live off of, I have learned the hard way to avoid her in future - which won't be difficult, as she is and will remain an unknown outside of a small UK readership. Avoid this book, it's not worth reading for any reason.

Very disappointing (review may contain slight spoilers) By Misfit This is the first in a planned series of six book and billed as "An American Saga" and comes with a whopping 229 page count. 218 of those pages are story with the final ten being previews of book #2, Maps of Fate, coming out sometime later this year.The first half of this book sets up the main characters, who for different reasons strike out for a new life in America. No matter what country or social background these folks have they all manage to end up on the same ship. Even more coincidental, no matter what their plans are for in America when they arrive they all seem to end up in St. Louis and sign on for the same wagon train. Oh, and they all get there just in time for about the last wagon train out of Dodge, get their wagons and supplies purchased in two days and no matter what their backgrounds seem to be expert at driving those wagons and handling the oxen just like a pro...I'm a believer. Yes, there's a lot more to it than that, but unfortunately a story idea with a lot of potential was ruined by poor execution. The alternating chapters of character set up went on way too long (100+ pages), and frankly by the time it was over I had forgotten much of what went on before - set this book down for a day or two at your own peril, as you may have to back-track for a refresher course. I'd have preferred seeing the book start when the action began, and then liberally sprinkle the story with the character's back history.Secondly, this book is too short and IMHO would have worked better as a trilogy of three big fat books instead of six slimmer editions, giving the reader more *meat* on the bones to convince them to continue. What this reader got was a plateful of unlikable characters and squicky male-fantasy sex that all ties into a mysterious map and a lost treasure of gold in Colorado's San Juan Mountains. The book comes to a dead stop right when the wagon train is pulling out and the adventure prepares to begin.Still not sure? I'll just leave you a couple of quotes from the book, a book that according to the jacket reviewers and authors are comparing to "Lonesome Dove and Centennial"."Her voice resembled a happy wind chime in a light breeze."Note, our wind chime lady was speaking German. Not the most romantic language no matter how beautiful the woman is speaking it ;)"There's was definitely something between my friend Reuben..."????"Jacob growled out a knowing laugh as he ripped the fabric of her blouse down to her waist. He cupped his entire hand around the flesh of her breast. Sarah felt is if this really was not her...She was an observer who simply watched from some strange man and woman. She felt faint...His fingertips inched below her waistband. She opened her mouth again to cry for help, but he reached over to the pitcher stand, grabbed one of the cloth napkins and shoved it roughly between her teeth...She gagged as one of Jacob's thick fingers found her center. She felt a stab of pain as his fiber penetrated her...Her entire body trembled and her thighs shook..."Ick ick ick. Although don't forget we're getting some romance as well as rape so after one of our main pairs has rapturous sex in the baggage car and after they've dressed you'll be treated to stuff like this,"Deep inside her belly, she could feel her body absorbing his seething explosion and her abdomen pulsed with currents of energy. She knew her face glowed and impassioned tears filmed her eyes. 'I...I have never felt like this.'"Not quite my idea of romance. I'll pass on the rest of the series.FTC? A win off of Librarything's Early Reviewers program.

74 of 87 people found the following review helpful. Doesn't Even Make My 'Worst' List By Gimlet-eyed I bought this book against my better judgement. Having read a number of reviews here on Amazon, including the one-star ones which excerpted the text, I made the purchase anyway, thinking the book couldn't possibly be as bad as it seems. Trust me on this. it's dreadful. The writing is poor. The text is full of errors and has never been touched by a professional editor. The story lacks any substance and ends just as there is a glimmer of hope that there might actually be a single tale to be told here. The sex borders on rape. I was so appalled by this work that I went to the website of its publisher, Rockin SR Publishing, which has published no fiction other than Threads West. My suspicion is that author Rosenthal owns the house and has, in reality, self-published this work.Do yourself a favor and buy Lonesome Dove. I agree with a previous reviewer who decried any comparison between McMurtry's works and what has been written here. The only similarity is that both of them are available on paper.It should also be noted that while this book is touted as having won 'prestigious' book awards, let the buyer beware. Most, if not all of these 'awards' are from award mills which charge a fee for 'entering' a book, said fee ranging from 60-odd bucks to over ninety, per entry. One site even says, "enter as often as you wish." Ugh.

19 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Most Disappointing Book I've Purchased in Quite Some Time By Delilah I absolutely love American historical fiction. Not nearly enough of it is written to suit my taste, so I was quite excited to find this book and what I had hoped might be a new favorite author. Instead, what I found was bleak disappointment.At first I thought my mistake had been in purchasing this book in audio format. I spend my work commute listening to audio books, and I’ve heard enough of them to recognize the difference between expertly done, engaging narration and flat, amateurish reading. The narrator of Threads West was of the latter variety. The narrator also happened to be the author himself. Rarely is a writer talented enough to “act out” his book in the skillful manner expected of today’s audio books, and this was no exception. The expressionless, stumbling reading—not to mention the obviously subpar recording equipment—was so bad I almost gave it up after the first chapter.But it takes a lot for me to quit on a book before I’ve given it a real chance. (And really, who wants to admit that their money was wasted on a bad book?) I was willing to forgive Mr. Rosenthal for the bad choice he made in deciding to narrate the book himself, and judge the story strictly on its own merits, despite the rather off-putting opening scene. (I think the writer took the “sex sells” adage to heart when choosing where to open the story.)I trudged on through the next chapter. And the next. And the next. But narration aside, the story simply did not improve. Nor did the writing. When a young 19th century woman from Liverpool referred to her parents as “Mom and Dad”, I added Shoddy Research to the list of the book’s faults, and I knew I just couldn’t force myself to continue any further.So Threads West wins a spot on the very short list of books I’ve turned away from within the first few chapters. Compared to Lonesome Dove and Centennial??? I’d love to ask the people who came up with those comparisons exactly they were thinking—or drinking.

About the Author Runoko Rashidi (born 1954) is a historian, essayist, author and public lecturer based in Los Angeles, California and Paris, France. Rashidi is a very competent researcher, and I have personally corresponded with him on a project with Tony Brown's Journal, that was a success for him, and provided very impirtant information on Africans in Asia, to the African diaspora community.I had participated with a group that brought Van Sertima to SIU during Black history month in the early eighties, and discussed many issues with him on the African presence in early America. He would definitely be proud of not only the superb photos, but the rudite manner in which Rashidi is known for putting together articles, documentts, pamphlets, and of course, anthologies, and books. The anthology was very well put together, and captures many very prominent African, African Diasporan, scholars, that cover all discipline areas in field research concerning "that other Afrcan".Good work Rashidi, and many thanks to Emmanuel and my brothers at Books Of Africa, LTD. I wouldn't have gotten the early copy without your efforts.
