Easy to read, several color photos. This book focuses on 2 areas of Mexico City: La Colonia Roma and La Condesa, so it has some detail that the other Mexico City books don't include. The maps aren't very useful but they contain a link to Google maps that are excellent. Lots of useful information. Made me want to spend more time in these areas than I had originally planned. cp

Good Historical Who Done It By Dan Roope The author does a great job developing the situation that led to the death of McLoughlin but I would have appreciated a greater development and description of the book's setting. Wrangell Alaska is my home and I would have enjoyed a fuller view of it 200 years ago.

Superior By A Customer "A River Out Of Eden" sounds like it might be a very pastoral and peaceful novel about a beautiful river. Yes, the river is beautiful, and the country it flows through is likewise pastoral -- and the river is very real. It is the mighty Columbia. Hockenberry has done a great deal of research of the region. Many issues make up this fascinating novel about the Chinook native peoples, the dams on the river, white supremacists, a plutonium researche at Hanford, excessively heavy rain that treatens the strength of the dams. When people begin to show up dead by a strange but familiar harpoon, Francine Smoholla, a marine biologist who happens to be part Chinook Indian decides to do some investigating. This is a real page turner, well worth your time.

A complex yet brilliant work By A Customer Perhaps her plight is that of most Americans as her heritage (as a half- Chinook Indian) battles with her professional life working as a Corps of Engineer marine biologist on the Columbia River. Francine Smohalla cares about both of her worlds even if the divergence leaves her with inner turmoil. She knows the dams built by the Corps have destroyed the life of her people and she realizes that her people want to destroy the dams.However, Francine was not expecting a serial killer to emerge who goes one step further by eliminating those individuals working for the Corps and associated organizations. The evidence accompanying the first corpse discovered by Francine points towards a Chinook Indian as the culprit. As other events add to the heated dispute and the death count grows, Francine worries that her beloved Chinook father is the killer and she begins to investigate.A RIVER OUT OF EDEN is an exciting amateur sleuth thriller that showcases the Pacific Northwest dispute between environment and heritage vs. technology. The story line is fast-paced, enjoyable, and filled with critical details that brings the area and the dispute to life. Although John Hockeberry has too many sub-plots filled with the range of issues diverting the reader at times from his central theme, the author writes a strong tale. Sub-genre readers will find this novel provides insight into a very complex debate inside an entertaining mystery.Harriet Klausner

It reflects a massive amount of research. John Hockenberry refers to places and situations in the Pacific Northwest that I have been around for 25 years, yet he clearly knows them more intimately than I do. I 'stayed in the book' even after I had finished reading it.

About the Author Jane Ellen Harrison (9 September 1850 – 15 April 1928) was a British classical scholar, linguist and feminist. Harrison is one of the founders, with Karl Kerenyi and Walter Burkert, of modern studies in Greek mythology. She applied 19th century archaeological discoveries to the interpretation of Greek religion in ways that have become standard. Contemporary classics scholar Mary Beard, Harrison's biographer, has described her as "in a way ... [Britain's] first female professional 'career academic'". Slater "Ancient Art and Ritual" is a short, "popular" book by Jane Ellen Harrison (1850-1928), who was a classical scholar by training, and a student of anthropology (or sociology) when Frazer's "The Golden Bough" was still astonishing (or infuriating) classicists with its message that the customs and beliefs of "beastly heathen savages" might shed light on those of the Greeks and Romans. (Who were, of course, strictly speaking, "beastly heathens" themselves.... Not to mention some of their other customs.) On top of this, she pioneered the role of professional academic for women; separating the two aspects in some of the negative reactions to her work can be difficult.Those curious about her now have a very good Wikipedia article to refer to, so I'll forgo a biographical sketch, and a lot of bibliographic detail on her publications. Peacock's 1988 biography, "Jane Ellen Harrison: The Mask and the Self," and Mary Beard's 2000 "The Invention of Jane Harrison," Book 14 in the Harvard University Press "Revealing Antiquity" series, which supersede the biographical sketches available in earlier decades.)Like many of her works, "Art and Ritual" is available as a free pdf from archive.org (a Library of Congress website); a few (including this one) are available in Kindle editions (based, in this case, on a Project Gutenberg text). There are also no less than four competing editions of "Ancient Art and Ritual" for NOOK Books (although I have not taken the time to compare them).In "Ancient Art and Ritual," she used some of the insights (real or supposed) gained from her classical and anthropological studies to analyze the place of the arts in (despite the title), the "modern" world. (Mostly Britain, as it was just before the First World War.)Her basic thesis (much simplified) is that art, including visual and dramatic art, and ritual ("religion") were once united, expressing and evoking strong personal and communal emotions through the mode of imitation; and that the modern world had severed the connection, to its own considerable loss. She notes that she could have written the book with reference to India, or Medieval Europe, but argues that the modern world -- or at least the educated part at which the book was aimed -- felt closer to the ancient Greeks, so that the contrast was clearer. (One may doubt the extent to which this is now a compelling argument, but it made sense at the time.)If one takes her argument seriously, the temptation to apply it to, say, television, may be irresistible.However, if asked to list Harrison's major works, I would restrict my selection to three connected books: "Prolegomena to the Study of Greek Religion," first published in 1903, with various re-printings containing additional technical notes and some revisions of her views on particular issues; "Themis, a study of the social origins of Greek religion" ("With an excursus on the ritual forms preserved in Greek tragedy by Gilbert Murray and a chapter on the origin of the Olympic games by F.M. Cornford"), in 1912; and "Epilogomena to the Study of Greek Religion," published in 1921 (by which time she was cutting her connections to classical studies in favor of other interests, like Russian literature.)The first two volumes are massive studies, of which the first was the most successful with fellow-classicists in her own time. ("Themis" had to wait to the later twentieth century for belated recognition). "Epilogomena" is very short, and can't stand alone, being mostly limited to "reconsiderations" of (mainly) theoretical issues, but it is well worth reading. In these volumes, she attempted to go past the "barrier" erected by Homer and Athenian Tragedy, with their Olympian deities, and find the "real" roots of Greek ritual actions and religious feeling, particularly concerns for subsistence. In her view (shared by the so-called "Cambridge School"), it was the ritual which gave rise to the mythology, and the concepts of the gods, and not the other way around. Whether or not once comes away convinced, the argument is extremely interesting. "Prolegomena" in particular is packed with reflections on the "Lower Mythology" (daemons, and various types of local spirits, benevolent or malicious) usually ignored -- or deplored -- in older treatments of "Greek Religion.""Ancient Art and Ritual" (1913; corrected edition with some new bibliography, 1948) is something of a satellite to "Prolegomena" and "Themis," without the illustrations from ancient art, the edited Greek texts, and the careful documentation. It was originally published in the "Home University Library of Modern Knowledge," issued by Williams and Norgate (UK) and Henry Holt and Co. (US), in a volume roughly the size of mass-market paperback.So far as I know, "Ancient Art and Ritual," despite a fair number of reprintings, had little impact; the classicist who might have been most impressed by it, Gilbert Murray, was its editor. However, in 1926, one of Harrison's close friends, Hope Mirrlees (1887-1978; again, see her own Wikipedia article for details), published a fantasy novel, "Lud-in-the-Mist," with an epigraph by Harrison. The book, currently available in a very nice Kindle edition (besides out-of-print paperbacks) has a number of (mostly favorable) reviews on Amazon. From my perspective, the ideas about society, art, and religion embodied in the novel are in part a reflection on "Ancient Art and Ritual."

Anthony Jane Ellen Harrison was one of the great classical scholars of her time, at a time when women were scarce in academia. She had the respect of other scholars in her field too and was an inspiration to the next generations.She was far ahead of her time as a multi-disciplinarian bringing all her knowledge in various fields to bear in her works. This book is seminal for the ritual and art of ancient times.

This book is a scholarly read and Jane Harrison shows how man has always dealt with rituals to celebrate new life or some rite of passage. He could be seen enraptured in a dance or a song as he asks the gods to show mercy for rain, a healing or for food. She shows how these ancient rituals evolved into art forms such as choral readings, dance forms and even drama itself. Also, Greek sculpture was developed as a demure way to give homage to the gods.The one common thread behind all of the art forms was high emotional energy because the needs were so great. She then moves towards the premise that art is borne out of emotion and when man has a dire need, he becomes active and participatory.She then shifts to the artist himself and says he speaks when he is vexed or his feelings are deeply stirred. It is the artist’s duty to transfer those feelings into some medium and this expression will eventually be seen as a spoken truth whether done through writing, painting or drama. The artist normally has a keener emotion and though often perceived as somewhat removed or aloof from practical life, it is his responsibility to tell what he sees and feels.

Best Bisexual/Transgender Debut Novel/Book: Atom Heart John Beloved by Luke Hartwell By Elisa After the very long ride to read this book, I feel like worn out, an hole was forming in my heart and the author suddenly filled it in a rush, so strongly that it let me hurting. This novel is good... disturbingly good. John Parker is an eighteen years old straight teenager who decides to give himself up for sex to his best friend Nathan; Nathan is gay and in love with John, and John is thinking he can be Nathan's sex toy, while at the same time having a girlfriend and some other heterosexual adventures on the side. While with all the women he is the dominant lover, with Nathan he is always the submissive; strange as it's, John is able to have sex with a man only if that man is Nathan, and only if Nathan is in command.At first the author, through John's own words, let you have an imagine of John that is not exactly good; he seemed quite conceited, convinced he is like a God gift for girls and guys, sex on legs like he said of himself. I didn't like much John, especially since, even if he is always very nice with Nathan, he was also cheating on him with his girlfriend Mary, and cheating Mary with Nathan, but above all he was cheating both of them with other non-important flings. And while at the beginning John was only having sex with women other than with Nathan, then he starts also with other boys, and then he starts doing "dirty" things with these boys once he understands Nathan is not up to the same game he is. Again I approached this side of John in a negative way, I was thinking how unfair he was with Nathan, how stupid and selfish he was... but then I started to see something different, John was trying to degrade himself, he was trying to find a way to prove he was no good, that he wasn't indeed that God gift everyone was thinking, Nathan first in line. He had to prove to Nathan he was not worthy of his love, not for him but for Nathan's good. He was so in love with Nathan, that he was ready to destroy himself for him.There is "consensual" rape on the page and non consensual sex behind the page; this novel is not pretty and cute as it could seem at first, it's dark and disturbing, and as I said, I was addicted to it like Nathan was addicted to John, but a hole was in my heart, a scaring hole from the fear I was having these two guys weren't destined to an happily ever after. But don't worry, the author managed also to scare away that thought like he managed to put it there. It will not be easy for Nathan and John, and I don't think the end of the novel is the end of their trouble, but at least they have a beginning. We will see where it will lead them, and I hope the author will share with us that.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. I'm not a fan of gay fiction and I don't usually review anything but... By dom this book intrigued me with its title, its reviews, and the blurb. I bought it and read it in 4 days; I didn't want it to end so I stretched out reading it, thats how unique and fast-moving a book it is. John's voice is so real and honest, it's scary. There are a few times where it sounds a bit naive or unrealistic in how he responds to certain situations, and there is a bit of a poor proofreading job, but otherwise I was completely captivated and in love with John, and understood perfectly why Nathan could love him to death, and John's vanity and arrogance is ultimately a bit of a facade masking his true feelings, which at times he doesn't expect or understand. I happen to love coming-of-age stories, but this is beyond beautiful at times, I couldn't get enough of either of the main characters and hated when other characters took them away from each other, that's how perfect I felt John and Nathan were for each other.Lastly, the book can be read very easily, once you read the last few pages, as a Christian allegory of mystic love; hence the second-half of the title.

The sexuality is extremely frank and sometimes disturbing, just like in real life. Certainly not a conventional romance. Forces you at many points to reconsider your preconceptions about the characters. Highly recommended.

47 of 51 people found the following review helpful. Feel-good rich guy fantasy By Kathy Cunningham Mike Greenberg's MY FATHER'S WIVES is a novel about the pursuit of perfection. Forty-year-old narrator Jonathan Sweetwater is living the perfect life - he's rich, he's best friends with his billionaire boss (who provides him with his own limo and driver, flies him all over the place first class, and sets up pick-up games with Michael Jordan), and he has a gorgeous wife and two adorable kids. Perfect, right? Well, when he comes home early from a business trip to find his wife in a seemingly compromising position with an unidentified man, all of Jonathan's perfection crumbles. Rather than confronting the situation, he sets out on a two-week odyssey to discover the truth - not just about his wife, but about his deceased father, a powerful five-term senator who deserted him when he was nine and had six wives before he died. It's an interesting premise, and Jonathan is a likable enough narrator, but I never quite got the connection between his non-relationship with his father and his inability to deal directly with his wife. By the end, I found myself wondering what the whole thing had really been about.Part of the problem is the almost unbelievable affluence of Jonathan's life. He and his boss go out clubbing after work (to places where only the rich and famous can get in) and they dine at the most exclusive of restaurants. Jonathan flies first class (with caviar and Champagne), and his boss doesn't seem to mind that he's jetting off to Aspen, New York, and London in his personal odyssey - in fact, the only time his boss actually requires him to come into the office is when he wants to play basketball. Additionally, Jonathan has an extensive wine cellar - he and his wife share of bottle of pricey wine just about every evening. It's quite a blissful portrait of family life - mom and dad are sipping Estancia Pinot Noir, the kids have milk, and everyone shares a group hug. So when Jonathan becomes convinced that his wife is cheating on him, he is understandably shaken. He decides to pay a visit to each of his father's six wives, hoping a better understanding of the man who deserted him would help him better understand himself.But his quest to visit his father's wives never quite makes sense. Jonathan seems concerned that he's either too much like his father (he calls him a "serial monogamist," since he could never commit to any woman for more than a few years but he always had to be married) or too little like him (which would suggest he could never be as popular, as charismatic, or as powerful as his father was). But if his wife really is cheating on him, it has nothing to do with either his father or his father's wives. And what little he learns from the women he visits (the wives' characters are thinly developed, and their conversations with Jonathan are fairly brief) sheds no light on whether or not his wife is cheating on him. What is revealed is that Jonathan, like his father, has been obsessed with perfection. And as one of the wives tells him, perfection isn't possible.I enjoyed reading MY FATHER'S WIVES. Greenberg has an easygoing writing style, and the novel is both readable and engaging. I just had a little trouble identifying with super-wealthy Jonathan and his suspicions about his wife. The central mystery of the novel - is his wife cheating or isn't she? - was never really much of a mystery. And the most interesting character by far - Jonathan's deceased father - is neither fully developed nor understandable. In the end, this is a feel-good story about very rich people living a fantasy life. It just never felt real.

Memories smell better than they actually are By KasaC This book reminded me of the Bill Murray movie Broken Flowers, in which a man seeking truths visits a series of women, each providing enigmatic clues to the answers he is seeking. Whereas Murray's character was reliving his own past, here Jonathan Sweetwater is trying to gain a better understanding of his flamboyant father who was a "serial monogamist" who after leaving Jon's mother had five more wives. Each segment plays out like its own short story, but fails to provide a cohesive whole. Jon's father departed when he was only nine years old, and he never saw him again after that. Unfortunately the wives never fully developed, and the mystery which sets Jon's quest in action is not very compelling. I found it to be a page turner, but was unfulfilled at the end.

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Not Engaging or Deep, But Had Real Potential By LAURI CRUMLEY COATES I think I was expecting a more intense and thought provoking storyline here. The main character, Jonathan, starts out his story by telling readers he is a man who has everything. Wonderful high paying jobs, a totally cool boss who offers unbelievable perks, including pickup bball games with Michael Jackson, flying him first class on business trips, a limo and driver at his beck and call. He has a lovely wife and three sweet children, but they are actually not well drawn, and the characters seem flat and almost like afterthoughts. Which makes his predicament all the more hard to understand. He believes his wife is having an affair, which upsets him greatly. Rather than working through the issue with her, he embarks on a voyage to discover the life and wives stories of his deceased father, a man who also appeared to have everything going for him. He hasn't had his father as a main figure for most of his life, the father having basically deserting him and wife number one when Jonathan is nine years old. The book is basically a series of shorter stories based on the son's discovery of the father's life. However, they aren't particularly compelling, and really don't give much of an insight to the lives and mindsets of either father or son. There was more potential here, sadly the author just didn't work it. Not at all what I expected, and somewhat disappointing.
