It is available is several Kindle versions, including a version that is free, but this version is certainly worth the very small price.Gardiner (as does Schiller, in his history of this period), glosses over the collection of battles we call the Thirty Years war. Those battles, themselves, are interesting, but what was going on behind the scenes in Vienna and other capitals was far more interesting. Gardiner brings out this detail, including France's role in the later years of the conflict.Europe's Tragedy: A New History of the Thirty Years War is a more complete history of this period, but reading Gardiner and Schiller is nonetheless a good place to start with an overview before reading Peter H. Wilson's more detailed work.

By Amazon Customer The Thirty Years War is one of those chronic historical bloodbaths that you've probably seen mentioned here and there, without much understanding of what the conflict was about. This book does a good job explaining the genesis of the war. The essential problem was the system of Electors in Germany-Austria and the weakness of the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. That, and the official power of the electors coupled with their actual powerlessness meant that holders of important offices and landholdings (such as bishoprics) were able to contest with each other over resources. And, for the Emperor to wield any sort of power, he had to ally himself with someone who had a powerful army. To make matters worse, military types had apparently forgotten everything the Romans had learned about logistics. So, to the average person, an army quartered in your vicinity to defend your region was almost as much of a burden as an invading army set on destruction. Add in that armies were made up of mercenaries from outside the region, that there were no hospitals or even first aid stations, and that they had to forage (steal) everything they needed and you had the ingredients for a really disastrous situation. The plotting of the English, the French, and the Spanish made the situation worse. I must say, Gardiner is the first person I've read who had anything good to say about Wallenstein, the low level noblemen who rose up to wage warfare on behalf of the Emperor. And its interesting to read the accounts of the real Catholic-Protestant issues, which had to do as much with material resources and offices as with doctrinal differences. All in all, this book makes sense of a brutal conflict that left millions dead and a sizable portion of Europe devastated.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Political History, Some Bias, Well-written By P. Weiser As others have pointed out, this history is just short of a century old (1912). It is well-written in the style (and with the British biases) of its time; in particular, the author sees a sort of Darwinian evolution toward Parliamentary government, nationalism, and religious tolerance which the actors suffered for thwarting (various Holy Roman Emperors) and succeeded by advancing (Richelieu). It is an easy read, and all the illustrations are pleasant except the (unfortunately vital) map which is useless on my Kindle Keyboard. One star off for that.Why read it? First, it's a good read, summarizing a complex and confusing - but important - period in European history. The people are tragic, heroic, or at least dynamic. Money flows are not ignored. But second, this was written *just before the First World War* - and displays, in all its grandeur and tragedy, the self-satisfied best-of-all-worlds complacency of that time. All problems solved, the Germans nicely and, at long last, peacefully united. And, did the author but know, about to fall on Europe and the world like a rain of iron as the 1648/1815 system hit a critical level of contradictions. This should serve as a warning - not about Germany but about supposedly stable, benign, long-lasting solutions.

Focus is paint schemes, not squadron histories or model numbers, although there's good text presented in those areas. Even covers paint schemes of "temporary" LANTFLT Tomcat squadrons like VF-211 & VF-213 while they were in LANTFLT. Also includes Reserve & NATC squadrons. 464 ebook "pages". Excellent picture quality - I could even "drill down" on my iPAD enough to read aircrew names on the canopy rails and BUNO's. Only negatives are (1) no Table of Contents or Index; (2) can't print any pages or individual photographs. By Kenneth J Klein I am so excited about this book that I am posting my review even before I finish it because what I have seen so far is good enough to surmise that the rest of it is just as good. I have been waiting for this to come out since they first announced it. I am such a huge fan of the Tomcat, as my model kit stash would attest, that I eagerly grab up any reference material I can find.This is such a comprehensive reference that it is simply amazing they were able to collect so many high-quality photos in one book. But far beyond being a reference, this is a history book of the Atlantic F-14 squadrons, with great info on the lineage of each one.They really have out done themselves on this book. I cannot wait for Part 2 now! I cannot recommend this book enough, even if you do not build model kits, if you are just a fan of the Tomcat or of Naval Aviation you need this book.It works great on my Kindle, the format is more like what you get in a magazine, which kind of threw me at first, but when I flip my Kindle on its side it really works spectacularly. I also viewed it on my tablet and it is amazing on it as well, but I prefer my Kindle because it is so much lighter. So great job guys, you really did a great job with this one!

By Jim Escalle This latest digital book by Detail & Scale is the most comprehensive reference book I’ve read on F-14 Tomcats, especially pertaining to the colors and markings of the different Atlantic Coast squadrons. The organization of the book is laid out well and the photo quality is impeccable. Each squadron chapter begins with a summarized history, and Rock Roszak’s illustrations do a fabulous job of supplementing the photos of particular aircraft in each unit. Highly recommend this book to modelers, historians, researchers, and anyone else with a love of this classic naval aircraft.

Always worth carrying By LAcustomer I ordered the book for a recent trip to a conference in St. Petersburg as a guest of the Russian National Library on Sadovaya and Nevsky. My Russian is fluent. Since 1974, I have lived for extended periods in Russia and visit Moscow and other cities 3-4 times a year, but had not been in Petersburg for 10 years. The book was worth the purchase price for the updated information on the convenience store at Bolshaia Koniushnaia (so I could eat on my own), the taxi info. (to make my 6 a.m. Lufthansa departure flight) and the info. on internet cafes, websites, tickets and hours of concert halls, theaters and museums and bookstores (for a good map). An added tip for those unexpectedly living too centrally, as I was, might be that the renovated department store Gostinnyi dvor is open late and sells bottled water (for those who arrive late and need it) and flowers (for visits to friends) and that there are banks with the same currency exchange rate all along Nevsky (for those who prefer to change cash).

Extremely helpful; as usual By Roger in Fort Worth I used the Rick Steves books extensively last summer when my daughter and I traveled to Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Athens and Istanbul and found the information in the books extremely helpful. My daughter and I are planning a trip to Russia, Helsinki, Tallinn and Stockholm this summer and I've found this book helpful in planning our trip.

It simply fell quite short for me By M.Jacobsen I am a huge, huge Rainbow Rowell fan and have - up until now - absolutely loved every book she has written. (I've often said she could publish her grocery list and I'd give it 5 stars, ha!) So I was crestfallen when I turned the last page of her new novel LANDLINE and was forced to admit that I just did not care for this story.Georgie McCool is a working mother two fabulous girls, married fourteen years to the love of her life, Neal. A television writer, Gracie finally - FINALLY - might have the chance of a lifetime: the shot at her own show with her writing partner and best friend-since-college, Seth. The only problem? They have to come up with a bunch of episodes in just a few days and it's the Christmas holidays. So instead of accompanying her husband and daughters to Omaha as they had planned, Georgie has to stay behind in LA and write her scripts.Her husband is unhappy with this. Very unhappy. In fact, he might have left her. Georgie isn't entirely sure. No one is sure because Neal really isn't answering his cell phone. And whenever Georgie tries to call Neal's mother's house, Neal seems to be next door with his ex-fiance visiting. Or something.And when Georgie's cell phone starts acting up, she desperately plugs in an old rotary phone she found in her Mom's house. {Enter magical realism part of story.} Can Georgie get Neal back? Can she give up everything she has worked for her entire life to make a man who has been unhappy for the better part of fourteen years happy?You can probably tell why I disliked the book here. I really can't blame Rowell for taking the story a different direction than I wanted her to go....her story, her choice. But I disliked the idea that you can make a fundamentally unhappy person (unhappy with life in general, has always been unhappy from the get-go) happy by sacrificing your entire life for them - it doesn't work that way and I think it's a terrible message to send to women. (Give up everything, do whatever he wants, that will fix everything and *finally* make him happy.)But you may love it - so don't base your entire decision on my review....read some of the other reviews first before making a purchase decision!

Unbelievable Story By Diego M I'm a little afraid to write a review for this book, since the fans are quite devoted and harsh with their likes and dislikes. But I read this book because of the raving fans...so I believe I should give them an authentic review.First what I enjoyed. The relationship between Georgie and Neal reminded me of a real relationship. Reminded me of the good and bad times (it happens). Reminded me of being young again, back in college, falling in love with my long-time girlfriend and future wife. I was also in a long-distance relationship, so I felt a strong connection with the characters and how they both wanted to live in different places. I could relate when young Neal and Georgie called each other everyday from different states and it reminded me of good times. This book's take on young love was beautiful and I hope it puts a smile on other readers faces, as it did mine.I also really enjoyed Heather's "pizza boy" a lot, and wish them the best!But my criticism lies with the plot as a whole. For those who want a spoiler-free review: the plot, story and characters were not believable. Because of this, I did not enjoy the book. For more detail please read below.-----SPOILERS------First off, the magic phone. It is never explained how or why it works, just the fact that it does randomly. How is this not addressed? At the end of the book, Neal tells her that he no longer has a landline at home. Does that mean that if she reconnects it and calls her Mother that she could talk to her older self? (ask for some lotto numbers, when people die...) Heck, why doesn't she just go back to her Mother's and call young Neil again. HE still has a landline. This book added context to my visit to Monaco By Susan I was eager to read "Grace of Monaco" the story of the American actress, Grace Kelly, who won the heart of Prince Rainer of Monaco, having recently visited Monaco and the palace. The visit brought to life the and the made the read more fascinating as I pictured the hills, buildings, harbour, yachts, casino, streets, etc that are described. Totally new was the history that traces back the House of Grimaldi, the highs and lows over the centuries and how Grace and Rainier built modern day Monaco as it is no and diversified its economy through their charisma, fame and hard work. I also watched the documentary on Grace's life. She was so beautiful and gracious, and it was good to see the actors of the silver screen of long ago. Because Grace's life ended in a tragic car accident, the book stirred on emotional levels as if she had been a peer. The most moving scene in the movie, Grace Kelly, The American Princess, is when Prince Rainier fumbles with the tissue to wipe his eyes at the funeral and Princess Caroline reaches out and touch his arm with her black gloved hand. I did not follow Grace's life until now, and it was riveting to read her story and all the history surrounding the principality of Monaco, how she loved both America and Monaco, serving the tiny but prestigious) country graciously until the end. She died on Sep 4, 1982 and Prince Rainier on April 6, 2005. A beautiful read.
