Perfectly Suspenseful By Cilla The author has achieved the perfect level of suspense that kept me wondering what Eva's secret was all the way to the end. This was a beautifully written book that deals with trauma and redemption in an honest and believable way. Each of Eva's journal entries reveals just enough of her past to keep you wondering just how things will turn out for Eva, Brea and Stephen. A delicious read.

Shadowy Intimates and Selves By Brian Kingzett Taylor Shadowy Intimates and SelvesThe haunting copy of Van Gogh's Undergrowth with Two Figures painting ( almost faceless and inscrutable in a pathless wilderness) reproduced as the cover of Maryann D'Agincourt's Journal of Eva Morelli novel (Portmay Press 2013) is highly suggestive of its mysterious contents. These relate essentially to the private views and problems of three characters, living, say in 2000, in a New Hampshire seaside town near Boston, variously concerned with the memory of now dead parental or other unsteady, enigmatic intimates in their past with in two cases a hint as well of their own confused and shaky relationships in their present. They are firstly those of Eva Morelli, tall, slender, exotic, sensual, experienced, twice-married with two daughters and beginning to wrestle with her secretive past in very gradual and evasive revelations of her bruised experience partly recorded in a journal kept over four months of psychiatric sessions. Secondly and thirdly they are those of Stephen Forester the psychiatrist (who kept a copy of Van Goch's shadowy painting on his office wall) and his actress wife Brea who ten year's previously moved with a young son for quiet from the hassle of New York, restlessly beset by their own puzzling uncertainties..Eva Morelli was born an only child about 1950 to busy but early over-protective and later distant parents who a few years on were working as talented, idealized and melancholic jazz pianist and his manager respectively in what was described as a sinister and depressing night-club in Boston. A sympathetic but secretive paternal Aunt Lora working part-time at Woolworths and later as a bank accountant was partly responsible for her upbringing, as a stand-in at the parental home during their many absences, and after their tragic deaths by murder and suicide, when Eva was 16, in her own home for a time as her mentor before Eva's first marriage. Later Eva found that the Van Goch painting reminded her of her parents and of secretive Aunt Lora also whom long ago she had discovered were not the sort of people she had thought them to be.Stephen Forester was born in 1958, son and only child of a busy, attractive and renowned analyst in Boston Dr Arthur Forester (who was interested in the "divided self" which if understood correctly might ultimately enhance the personality) and his often absent petite, stolid and politically activist mother, a couple wrapped up with their careers, and tending in Stephen's early lonely days to leave him in the hands of an earthy baby-sitter whom they called Mrs C, whom he could hardly recall but came to feel resembled his patient Eva in some strange way. Later in his youth he would become disillusioned about his mother's suspected marital infidelity, harshly judge her for lack of presence in his life and secretly blame her for his over-anxious nature. Much later he would lose his admiration for and confidence in his father, the parents perhaps becoming typified for him by Van Gogh's faceless figures. By middle age Stephen now working on a presentation on the Art and Science of Listening to the Patient (which was akin to listening to a patient's heart) had been married 14 years to actress Brea, had a young son and all three were experiencing some doubts about the family's adjustment in small- town New Hampshire life.Brea Forester, the psychiatrist's actress wife, whose background was only slightly described, was born around 1962 and raised in New York by parents who though long divorced were not "shadowy" but maintained a sympathetic relationship. When she looked at the Van Goch painting she commented to her husband "The figures look shaky. Do you see us in that painting, Stephen ? " His positive reply confirmed her perception. After her parents' divorce Brea had several mainly "feral" affairs in the theatre world before meeting the love-seeking Stephen and during her 10 married years in New Hampshire had come to have a close relatonship with Sam her director and fellow actor about which Stephen had challenged her. Currently she had been interpreting and rehearsing the character and role of Mrs Helena Alving of Ibsen's Ghosts the theme of which was people obsessed with the past while director Sam was playing Pastor Mander who had persuaded Mrs Alving to stand by and reform her hopeless husband.The author's presentation of all this and more of the whole story took the form of an intriguing sequence of 27 brief "chapters" on activities of the key characters interwoven with 16 usually even briefer Journal entries by the patient Eva. This brief and frequent shift in the treatment of the different characters' "stories" and their mysterious connections was skilfully done and certainly holds the reader's interest but it may have resulted for some in an excess of snippety impressionism and a too hurried "All's Well that Ends Well" conclusion about constitutionally divided selves.

Indian resentment against the encroaching white men, an obsessive lover, horse rustlers, and plain folks trying to build homesteads out of the wilderness are brought to life by Grey's fine storytelling skills. This is a reprint of the last volume of the author's "Ohio River Trilogy," published in 1909; however, the book stands alone. An interesting foreword written by Grey's son, Loren, tells much about the writer. A good story that would make great historical fiction reading for an American-history assignment.

By A Customer This classic western tail of men saving women, while being a great love story is also a wonderful adventure story. A classic cowboy\borderman fights indian to save the helpless beuty, but instead of man saving woman, it is reversed, when Helen saves Jonathan from his own unhappy life. I have loved this book since the first day my mother placed it in my hands to read, and although the original has a few lapses in storyline, they kill someone twice, the basic story structure is enjoyable. Having read this book close to a dozen times, I can recommend that every person who has never given westerns a try read this one.

I haven't been a big reader of westerns, but I have been wanting to do some historical reading. 'Desert Gold' interested me because it was a western that covered the times that it was published in: 1913.The characters are just good people surviving a harsh environment, protecting whatever and whoever they can. It took me a while to get my mind adjusted to Zane Grey's style of writing, but I really enjoyed everything about it. This is a unpretentious story of finding root, pursuit, escape and survival and it provides a medium for Zane Grey to get philosophical on us during long dusty nights in the desert. Although it may have bogged down a little, I liked the philosophical. Always have. The book has a satisfying ending even if it did finish a little cleaner than it was set up to do.I read this in the 1964 paperback edition, but it would be great in audio!

From Booklist Let’s haul out the thriller checklist and see what we have here. FBI agent with troubled history: check. Beautiful new partner: check. Powerful villain: check. Murdered friend/colleague: check. Ruthless, conspiratorial corporation: check. This is a by-the-numbers thriller that, despite its formulaic approach, is actually pretty good. Not great by any means: the writing is often clunky, and the characters are not what you would call fresh. But the book, which concerns the efforts of an FBI agent to find out who’s responsible for the murder of his former partner, even if it means going up against a powerful drug lord, does hold our interest. Tom Eriksen, the FBI agent, is a stock character, but the authors (Dobbs, the veteran broadcaster; Born, a DEA-agent-turned-novelist) give him enough depth to make him feel like a real person. Ramon Herrera, the drug lord, is appropriately evil and ambitious, and the ruthless corporation (a U.S. company working with Herrera) is presented realistically enough that we believe such a conspiracy could actually happen. The novel doesn’t break any new ground, but it does make going over familiar ground an enjoyable enough reading experience. --David Pitt

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A beach read that champions the right By Leslie N. Patino FBI agent Tom Eriksen has been sent to El Paso as punishment for some hotheaded behavior. Now he’s got a boss looking for reasons to fault him. Our man gives the boss plenty of fodder since he keeps getting into sticky situations where people turn up dead and where Eriksen shouldn’t have been to begin with.I admit I was a little skeptical when I heard Lou Dobbs had written a novel. I suspect that James O. Born, who has written other thrillers, probably did most of the work. In exchange, he got access to Dobbs’ very large audience. If you compare the number of Amazon reviews for “Border War” with those for Born’s earlier books, it looks like he got a good deal. According to what I see, since “Border War’s” May 6th publication, Born has published three more books with another scheduled for April, 2015. I don’t think even Stephen King could crank out books that fast and not have his craftsmanship slip a little.Not surprising that there are phrases like “her engineer mind” (engineer’s mind?) and a character named “don Herrera.” In Mexico, the honorific title is used with first names, never with surnames. The good guys went to Harvard, MIT and Princeton. Pretty much all them are very handsome or beautiful. So much sex appeal makes everybody focus on “her beautiful blue eyes,” or “this athletic and cute detective.” The bad guys, of course, include “the tall, goofy-looking guy” and “the little Israeli.”I do give Dobbs and Born credit for spinning a pretty good story. They move the plot along fairly well, although they remind the reader too often of the characters’ motivations for their actions. The story felt a little too formulaic. Dobbs and Born do know their topics well. Of course, the book has a conservative slant—what else would you expect from Dobbs?—but, it wasn’t as strong as I expected.Conclusion: if you want a beach read that champions the right, you’ll probably like “Border War.”

By Bookreporter I have been eagerly and impatiently awaiting the release of BORDER WAR since I first became aware of its pending publication. The pairing of Lou Dobbs and James O. Born as co-authors is a dream collaboration.Dobbs is best known as a commentator for Fox Business Network but has also authored a number of nonfiction books dealing with business and politics. His television and literary efforts are worth exploring for their clear-eyed commentary and well-reasoned conclusions concerning how the world does and does not work. Exposure to Dobbs is similar to an ongoing business and economic seminar that you should have had in college but never did.Born is a well-known and highly respected law enforcement officer with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement who has been responsible for bringing a number of high-profile criminal cases to a successful conclusion (for the good guys, that is). Thus, my expectations for this book were very high; I’m pleased to report that they were met and even exceeded.BORDER WAR plays out between the very different sister cities of El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. Juarez is considered by many to be one of the world’s most dangerous cities, while El Paso has one of the lowest homicide rates in the United States. The chaotic lawlessness in Juarez threatens to spill across the border into El Paso, where an FBI agent named Tom Eriksen has been transferred after his apparent involvement in a questionable shooting. The office, known as the “Island of Misfit Cops,” is supposed to be a resting place for Eriksen while things are sorted out and cooled off.Eriksen, notwithstanding the attitude of his FBI supervisor, is a good, solid agent, still new enough at the job to be idealistic but with sufficent experience to keep himself alive. His situation attracts support from a couple of individuals from outside the Bureau. One is a national television commentator whose reasoned viewpoints on immigration and its solutions have garnered praise and brickbats for him on both sides of the border. The other is a newly minted Texas senator of Hispanic descent whose opinions on immigration and terrorism have made her extremely unpopular with a number of people, particularly the powerful kingpin of a Mexican drug cartel.As things play out for Eriksen both inside and outside of his office, two disparate and opposing forces --- the aforementioned drug lord and a computer company --- pursue an IT whiz and a Mexican doctor for their own reasons. That pursuit dovetails back on Eriksen, who finds himself caught in a number of crossfires, one of which leads back to his own office. The title “the Island of Misfit Cops” soon becomes ironic in more ways than one, as Eriksen works to discover the identity of an informant in his office, who is much closer to him than he imagines.BORDER WAR is an excellent read, a complex story full of great characters and told with a pitch-perfect voice and pace. While the story is complete in itself, Dobbs and Born leave the door open for a sequel (or more) at its conclusion, which, in this case, is the best possible ending of all. More? Valuable Advice for Start-up Businesses By April Pastis Author Kristin Marquet advises spending 20 to 30 minutes a week on publicity to build a strong brand for your small business and gives a plethora of examples on how to do that. The resources, guidelines, and advice given offers plenty of cost-efficient ways for start-up businesses that need to hit the ground running and don’t have a lot of time or money. Topics include press releases, article submissions, op-ed guidelines, social media, finding contacts, press kits, networking, product placement, partnerships, media etiquette and a whole lot more. In addition, the author dedicates a chapter to resources that will come in handy when developing a publicity campaign. In the book, the author mentions another guide (Crafting the Perfect Pitch: 34 Secrets to Landing Media Coverage on Today’s Top Newspapers, Magazines, and Morning Shows) that will be coming out soon and I can’t wait to read that as well.

Different than what I expected, but still a very rich book By Joshua Padnick I'll admit that my primary motivation for reading this book was somewhat shallow--I basically wanted to read about how one of history's most successful businessmen amassed so much wealth. To be honest, the book didn't really give as many details as I would have liked on that particular interest. But what I got along the way made the book worth it.First and foremost, after reading 350 pages of Carnegie writing about his life you feel like you really start to know him, to get a sense of what kind of human being he was, and even to get a sense of his somewhat remarkable confidence level that exists in conjunction with his pretty inspiring level of benevolence and compassion. But I think even more than getting a sense of Carnegie, you get a sense of the time he lived in. Some of the most engaging parts of the book for me were the first-hand accounts of Lincoln during the Civil War, or Carnegie's conversations with President Harrison about a small uprising in Chile. You also hear about how he handled the strikes of steel workers, an occurence I'd only read about in history books but never learned directly about from the perspective of the manager.All throughout Carnegie peppers with his nuggets of wisdom, and you get the feeling he knows people want them really badly but that he chooses to give them sparingly.In the end, I probably will never re-read this book, but I feel better educated about one of history's greatest industrialists, greatest benefactors, and the time he lived in after having read it. If you have a nascent interest in history, you will most likely enjoy this book; if you're looking for a "how to make your millions" from a master, I would look elsewhere.

Mr. Carnegie serves as a great role model, which I feel is quite important, especially considering the terrible events in schools lately. Carnegie emphasizes the importance of self-improvement, knowing your talents, being kind, and also the importance of public speaking. You will learn important lessons thru personal anecdotes of his life. This book should be required reading for every adolescent attending high school.

Launius Born in Scotland but an immigrant to the United States as a teenager, Andrew Carnegie has been variously characterized as a "captain of industry" or a "robber baron" by those who have chronicled his rise to wealth and fame in the latter nineteenth century. After selling his steel company to J.P. Morgan at the turn of the century, Carnegie devoted himself to philanthropic goals. He gave away more than $350 million to various causes and endowed more than 250,000 libraries. His philanthropic activities were underpinned by a fundamental belief in the virtue of hard work, perseverance, and self-improvement through education, hence his emphasis on libraries and the endowing of other educational organizations. Fundamentally, this book offers a restatement of the "Horatio Alger" myth of the "American dream" of success through personal commitment. At the same time Carnegie seeks to pass on his wisdom gained through a lifetime of effort. A significant and fascinating statement of American industrial individualism that is required reading for all who wish to understand the history of the United States in the latter nineteenth century, Carnegie's autobiography also served as a model for many others to follow. Unfortunately, few achieved the success that Carnegie enjoyed despite the diligence they may have registered.

The boats he has captained range from a twenty-five-feet Cape Dory sloop to a ten-meter yacht. His Pearson Triton Northstar (#516) was purchased on Long Island, sailed to Maine, destroyed in Hurricane Gloria, and rebuilt by Tom and his wife, Debra. His thirty-seven-feet Endeavour Makai was purchased in St. Thomas and sailed extensively in the Virgin Islands. He and Debra brought the boat to Maine in 1989 and have enjoyed many years of New England coastal sailing on this wonderful boat. Over twenty-five years ago, Debra Picchi joined Tom Desrosiers on his sailboat at a New Hampshire marina for an afternoon sail. This led to her crewing for him on various sailboats as she learned to sail herself during the years that followed. A cultural anthropologist by profession, she brings several of her skills to bear on this project. She is an educator and writer who has taught at the university level and has published many scholarly articles and a book. In this text, Picchi explains boats and sailing in an understandable, accessible way that will not intimidate a novice. She is also a trained anthropologist who has studied Brazilian and Mexican societies. She uses these abilities to describe in vivid and colorful terms the many New England communities they visit.

Part memoir of their sailing adventures together, part travelogue of the glorious waters and pretty coastal towns of New England, and part “how-to” guide for beginning sailors, this book will appeal to a wide range of audiences. The interspersing of the sailing narrative with sidebars on topics as varied as fog navigation, birds of the sea, and lobster pot hazards provides the reader with both an education and entertainment in a very user-friendly format. Indeed, from the dry comfort of our living rooms, we readers can envision the beauty and peace of Great Bay, sense the relief at barely clearing a fixed bridge, taste the succulence of a lobster roll purchased when sailing the waters of the Isle of Shoals, and experience the thrill of that adventure that awaits you “just around the next bend.” As Picchi so aptly tells us, sailing is not just about the boat (though they are indeed works of art in and of themselves), but about embracing the unknown, developing new skills, exploring different places, celebrating the natural world, and being a lifelong learner.

It was a dividing point between the end of the Great War and what seemed like a new generation of artists, musicians, political and societal radicals. It was also the year that one physically feeble president - Woodrow Wilson - left office and was replaced by another man - Warren Harding, who was intellectually and morally feeble. But all sorts of people and events came together to make the year 1920 a surprisingly interesting one.American author Eric Burns examines the year 1920 in his new social history, "1920: The Year that Made the Decade Roar". Though mainly looking at the year in the United States, he devotes a bit of time to other countries, too. He starts his book by recounting a shocking event on September 16, 1920 when a horse and cart, filled with explosives, was seen sitting on Wall Street in NYC, in front of the JP Morgan bank. At about noon, the cart exploded, and 38 people (and the horse) were blown to kingdom come. Scores more were injured. Who planted the bomb? Burns takes that terrorist attack - certainly a continuation of several bombings in 1919, if not by the same groups - and unfolds the story of the past few years and moves into the next few. But 1920 was the "fulcrum" year.Women got the vote in 1920 with the passing of the 19th Amendment, while alcoholic drinking was legally prohibited the same year. The 18th Amendment - or the Volstead Act - may have "legally" stopped the production (and governmental taxation) of liquor, but it sure didn't stop the illegal consumption of the "hooch" and other homemade alcoholic products. Thousands died consuming the stuff in the 13 years of Prohibition. In the end, of course, the lack of legal revenue from taxation and the realisation that prohibiting liquor was in no way going to stop the demand of it.These events and people are just a few Eric Burns writes about in his lively book. It's a great book for readers who want to put the pieces of the times together.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. 1920 is a roaring read, a thorough and thoughtful appraisal of a single year in our past and all its implications for our future By Bookreporter In 1920, “Americans were hopeful that the worst was behind them.” As news correspondent and author Eric Burns (THE SPIRITS OF AMERICA, THE SMOKE OF THE GODS) proves, this hope would be tempered by seismic cultural changes, many of which were launched in the first year of the only decade in our history to have its own nickname.Three major factors that rocked the nation were the final end to the “war to end all wars” (though it didn’t) and two Constitutional amendments --- one allowing women to vote and the other preventing all Americans from consuming alcohol. The former endured and arguably changed the course of US politics; the latter was possibly the most ignored law in our history. But Burns points out that, in general, though Prohibition is often portrayed in a sardonic light, it very likely saved many lives (“fewer cases of cirrhosis of the liver”) and helped large numbers of American to lead more productive lives (“college administrators found their students to be more sober”).The country was in the grip of smaller, but no less portentous, issues, notably the first major act of foreign terrorism on American soil: the bombing on Wall Street. Burns follows the investigation of this outrageous action through the year, and though the specific perpetrators were never identified, signs pointed to Italian anarchists, certainly of an anti-capitalist and possibly communist strain. There were even suspicions that the Ku Klux Klan might have been involved, because it did have an active policy of creating terror, and was known as anti-immigrant and anti-government.An obscure conman who went by the name of Ponzi was inventing a new kind of crime that would bear his name. African American men were finding that fighting for the country on foreign soil gained them nothing back home, and farm boys were learning that factory work was at least as hard as ploughing and money didn't grow on the few trees in America's increasingly crowded cities. By 1920, President Woodrow Wilson was in seclusion, and in a very real sense, the country was being run by his wife, Ellen; this at a time when the issue of women’s rights was generating its own sparks.The very controversial Margaret Sanger (she advocated, among other causes, the policy of eugenics) was exhorting women to take control of their destinies; she spoke openly about contraception --- and the flappers got the message. Flappers were also smoking cigarettes (lots of them), a flagrantly antisocial and sexually charged behavior that, along with flesh-colored stockings, short skirts and a provocative way of moving on the dance floor, made these young restless women a symbol of the decade.1920 also saw the ascension of some of the century’s greatest artists, the names evoking the passions and growing pains of the decade: Louis Armstrong, Eugene O’Neill, F. The author has to relates events in the years before 1920 and events after 1920. However, the author is a very good story teller so that the narrative is very readable. The book would be more meaningful if the author had also talked about the downturn in the economy and the demobilization of the military. Still, anyone interested in the 1920's will find this book to be a good introduction.

I've read my fair share of holocaust stories before, but this is my first time reading about the female guards. I really almost didn't believe it. It's amazing what level of evil that they were capable of. It definitely goes with the saying "don't judge a book by it's cover" because these women don't look like they'd be capable of every thing that they've done. I think that more people need to be made aware of these horrors. I definitely learned a lot while reading this short book. It's a fast read yet very detailed.

The title sounds interesting, and as a avid reader of Holocaust history books, this is written at the level of a sixth grader, has zero references, completely opinion based and factually wrong, and honestly don't even know HOW or WHY it is sold on here. It would be a disgrace to put this next to my other Holocaust books. WHO EVEN WROTE THIS?? Do not get fooled by what COULD be an interesting book based on the title. What a waste.

The book provided insight on the lives of this women; how they came to be soldiers, their alias given to them based on how they deal with prisoners, their role in the genocide, even their love life and how they are punished in the end. Makes me wonder what made these women turned violent. From an innocent farm girl to someone who takes pleasure in hurting others. Shows the effects of war and depression during those times and what one is willing to do to survive. Well-written, i really enjoyed reading this book.
