Alaska's fermented legacy retains the fiercely independent spirit that propelled the state's beer drinkers through the gold rush and sustained them through Prohibition. Today, craft brewers produce outstanding suds in some of the harshest and most remote locations on the planet. And while the beer scene in Alaska has roots that trace back to days when spirits had to have "medicinal, mechanical, and scientific purposes," the contemporary crop of breweries can thank industry pioneers like the Alaskan Brewing Company for staying on the cutting edge of beer-making technology. Join beer columnist and historian Bill Howell on an exploration through this hop-filled history of the Last Frontier.

Review "This book highlights not only the rich history of beer up here, but also the cultural significance and impact the industry has in our far north region." - Jim "Dr. Fermento" Roberts, The Anchorage Press"The author has done his research, and he writes exceptionally well. This is especially impressive considering that writing is his second career (he's retired from the Navy). His enthusiasm for his topic is summed up early on: "The bottom line is that the craft beers of Alaska are some of the best brews that almost no one gets to taste who doesn't live here."" - David A James, Alaska Dispatch NewsAwarded 1st Place in the Best Beer Writing, Local/ Regional Category at the 2015 North American Guild of Beer Writers Awards (nagbw.org).

A History of Drinking on the Last Frontier By Beaker I bought the paperback copy of this book at our local brewery and expected a history of my favorite breweries in Kenai, Soldotna, & Anchorage. I was surprised to find the book go into such depth on the history of the gold rush and prohibition in Alaska and how these events affected drinking habits and the development of commercial brewing in early Alaska. It is a slim volume covering a lot of territory, and offers unique insight into the ups and downs of opening a craft brewing operation in Alaska. Anyone interested in specialty beers in Alaska will find this a fascinating read, but it will also entertain those with an interest in Alaskan history and how our state came to be settled. Who would have guessed that craft brews would be so popular in the 49th state? The only thing I found missing in this book was a map! As the narrative moved about the state, I wanted to see where all these events took place. So, keep an Alaskan map handy as you read. You will probably be inspired to visit some of these establishments that are still in business, so make sure you have Bill Howell's other guides handy: "Beer on the Last Frontier: Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak Island" and volume 2 "Beer on the Last Frontier: Anchorage, Fairbanks and Everything in Between". They are available as e-books too, so just download them to a reader before you travel.

Kashi Although remote, Alaska has a surprisingly strong craft beer presence, with some of the best small craft breweries in the country using its clear, pure water to produce a wide variety of excellent and unique beers. This book by retired US Navy submarine officer Bill Howell is both a good general history of Alaska and a balanced review of Alaska brewing that goes beyond the justly and widely famous Alaska Brewing Company of Juneau. With a graduate degree from MIT, world travel while in the US Navy, and designation a few years ago as one of the nation's top beer connoisseurs, Mr. Howell brings a sophisticated and balanced approach to beer and brewing while providing an worthwhile take on Alaska's colorful history through the prism of beer; The photos and illustrations are well-done and make this book more attractive.l

Canham-nelson Alaska is a magically rugged place and the state's beer community is incredibly welcoming. Bill Howell, the foremost Alaskan beer historian, perfectly captures this feeling in "Alaska Beer: Liquid Gold in the Land of the Midnight Sun." Bill's thorough research into the early history of Alaska's brewing history is well documented and makes for an interesting read. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in knowing more about the brewing traditions of the Last Frontier. Great job, Bill!
