It was accurate, informative and well used. It is in good condition after being continually stuffed into my bag and read almost every other day. I would have liked a bit more of current history, and an idea of the importance of the dates that so many roads are named after. I learned a bit of what President Rafael Correa has done and it has made an amazingly productive society and country.The book guided me well and has excellent tips and suggestions of places of interest.Well done! I will get another when I visit another country.

It gives a good range of information that a traveler will need By Ann McReynolds There aren't many travel books on Ecuador, and after researching the competition, this is the winner. It gives a good range of information that a traveler will need, and its recommendations closely align with the current websites. I won't have access to wifi on most of our adventures in Ecuador so I will need an actual book. We're packing light, and this is the only guide book we're taking. .

The authors were very thorough with providing historical information, where to go, how to interact with the locals, what to expect, generic maps, etc. The authors must have visited every city, and attraction. I hope this guide comes in handy when I get to visit Ecuador.

Simons While I read the book in a single sitting, I suspect that it will do a lot of good by being placed on coffee tables and in reception areas where momentary curiosity can be hooked, as well as serving as an abundant resource for discussion starters in academic courses and presentations. It is an easy read in the sense that the stories are short, varied, organized into familiar contexts, interesting and casually reported. Many people can find it hard to see themselves through others’ eyes and become very easily defensive or dismissive in the face of anything that challenges their reality. As a US American expat, for example, I find that the slightest bit of critical observation will have me labeled as a “traitor” by folks back home in no time flat. Lurie does a good job of finding cracks in the protective wall by matter-of-fact reporting that avoids judgment, and by owning his own experiences with a touch of humor.Clearly our common cultural faux pas can be magnified to dangerous extremes when they occur in the public realm, politics and media, and can have murderous results in urban neighborhoods as well as in international war zones. Often the daily picayune can become behemoth in other contexts, and Lurie cites ample examples of that taking place.The book is loaded with quotes, maxims and proverbs, wisdom sayings drawn from around the world and throughout the ages that show that perception and deception are common to all cultures in all times, almost platitudinous. Yet it continues to be our day-to-day challenge to put them into practice. Lurie’s book is a welcome reminder – “When in doubt, check it out.” (Maybe also, when not in doubt, as well?)

Perceptive guide to our many-cultured world By J Miller This is the happy result you get when a love of language and of humankind’s diversity meets a lifetime of work in international relations and education. The author describes situations from his many years in his field to explore how cultural differences are represented in language, their potential for misunderstanding, and their frequent resolution into cross-cultural friendship. The book explores how the same word, concept, gesture, sound, and image can mean dramatically different things across cultures--a terrific book for TESOL teachers, travelers, international students, doing business with other cultures. Sometimes laugh out loud, sometimes moving, always thought provoking.

Paco Ignacio Taibo II (born: Francisco Ignacio Taibo Mahojo on 11 January 1949 in Gijon, Asturias, Spain), also known as Paco Taibo II, is a Mexican writer, novelist and political activist. Taibo has lived in Mexico City since the age of 9, when in 1958 his family fled from Spain to escape the fascist dictatorship of Francisco Franco. Taibo II (or PIT, as he likes to be called) is a Mexican intellectual, historian, professor, journalist, social activist, union organizer, and world-renowned writer. Widely known for his policial novels, he is considered the founder of the neo-policial genre in Latin America and is the president of the International Association of Policial Writers. One of the most prolific writers in Mexico today, over 500 editions of his 51 books have been published in 29 countries and over a dozen languages, and include novels, narrative, historical essays, chronicles, and poetry.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. The Definitive Biography of Pancho Villa By Peppermint High An excellent read and probably set to become the definitive biography of Pancho Villa. Taibo covers the entire life (30 years) from the various aspects - outlaw, social reformer, military, family, political, film (!), of a man who was a larger than life. Villa taught himself to read before escaping the Mexican equivalent of Alcatraz. A complete teetotaler, he would shoot his drunk officers on the spot and preferred an ice cream. A champion of education, he provided the first free public schools as a governor. He had the first air force of Latin America and effectively used tactics and technology in an age when machine guns and horsed cavalries met in battle.As the title indicates, the book is a narrative biography which in the hands of Taibo, a police/crime novelist, is an absorbing read. While sympathetic to Villa (difficult not be), the book is thoroughly researched and provides various primary source references that provide a holistic view and help discern from what was myth and fact. The book also has 400 + pictures, many previously unpublished as noted in the back cover. However, they are small in size (2 inches long x 1 inch wide). The book is in Spanish and at the time of this writing (March 2009) there is no English translation of this book on Amazon.Highly recommended for research, Mexican Revolution, war films, US-Mexico relations, and just general reading. Me encanta que se hayan comparado los hechos y las fuentes, que se desmientan falsas autorías que con el tiempo se han dado a ciertas fotos, sin embargo me hubiera gustado ver las fotos en grande en algún apartado al final del libro. Las fotos son super pequeñas y cuesta trabajo identificar a los personajes.

The author describes with details the Mexican Revolution as accurate as the reliable witnesses as well as historic registers, personal letters, and a very complete bibliography could be and at the same time, with the same careful detailed an innovative and stunning biography of the legendary Pancho Villa. Some people hate him , some others love him like a hero or as their Godfather, but the truth is that this man is still being big news in the Mexican History. Other ones simply don't want to forget. Good work on research and presentation. I love this book!

The maps are great, and the insider tips and tricks are wonderful. You will NOT look like a tourist using this guide (you know, unless you hold it up and make it obvious). This book will help you navigate the city and make the best use of your time in NYC. No other guidebook is as good.

Well organized with lots of maps, good suggestions, and not much bigger than a phone so you can carry it discreetly and not look like a tourist.

However, the role of air power in Burma was vitally important to the campaign, in particular the attainment of air superiority in order to facilitate supply and close support operations. The foundation of these operations was dependent on the Allies achieving and maintaining air superiority and latterly air supremacy over the Japanese. The British lost air superiority during the initial Japanese attacks as their early warning system, aircraft, aircrew and tactics did not match their adversary’s capabilities. This book will analyze how the Allies lost air superiority during the initial exchanges, and then how technical and material difficulties were overcome before air superiority was won in 1944, and air supremacy was gained in 1945. Furthermore, the book will demonstrate how Japanese industry, their war in the Pacific, and their use of air power in Burma ultimately affected the air war’s eventual outcome. About the Author Dr Peter Preston-Hough is a visiting lecturer in the War Studies Department of the University of Wolverhampton and the History Department of the University of Chester. He lectures to undergraduates and postgraduates on aspects of air power since its inception in the twentieth century. His areas of interest include the Royal Air Force; the Strategic Air Offensive 1940 1945; 617 Squadron in the Second World War; the Air Superiority Campaign in the Far East 1939 1945; and airborne warfare and airborne operations, particularly in Normandy and during Operation Market Garden 1944. Dr Preston-Hough's first book, "Commanding Far Eastern Skies," is due to be launched in May 2015 and will be published by Helion. He is currently working on a study of Airborne operations in Europe in 1944.

By Brian Lee Knipple This is, as should be expected of a book based on the author's doctoral thesis, a pretty dry look at the subject with many graphs and references, but few photos. It covers the reasons why the Japanese onslaught was so devastating in Malaya and Burma in 1941 and 42 and how and why the allied air forces were able to first defeat Japanese air power and late gain air superiority and utilize air transport to support the ground offensives in Burma in 1944 and 45. It is a scholarly account of how the progression of better aircraft, improved radar/early warning and pilot training defeated the Japanese Army Air Force in the Southeast Asian theater. It also covers the obstacles the Japanese faced in fighting with an air force designed to support ground operations only and controlled by the generals in command of those ground forces. While specific air operations are recounted, this is not a history of air operations over Malaya, India and Burma, but rather the story of how air superiority was initially lost and later regained by the Allies. For the story of air operation in this theater, you should see the two Bloody Shambles volumes by Shores and Cull and the Air War for Burma by Shores.Two criticisms: 1) the book retains too much of the feel associated with defending a thesis and on many occasions explains what the book has successfully done rather than allowing the reader to determine if specific points have been adequately documented; 2) while the book is nicely bound and looks great, the hard cover material is discolored by the mere act of reading the book (actually opening it discolors the black portion white).

By Jagan Review originally published on www.rafcommands.com - Disclaimer - the Publisher had forwarded a review copy..I want to rate the book 3.5 stars . but since there is no ".5"..giviing it a four..---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------“Commanding Far Eastern Skies” by Peter Preston-Hough has its origins in a PhD dissertation that was done by the Author , which itself asserts itself as the only one related to the RAF in the far east.The author is a visiting lecturer at the University of Wolverhampton and this book is published as one of the series of the Wolverhampton Military Studies.The Book is organised into four major ‘Chapters’ , devoted to the Early Warning Organisation, the British Aircrew Tactics, the Counter Air Campaign, and the Japanese Industry. As expected there is very little of the ‘eye-witness’ accounts that we have come to expect and more of clinical research into existing archives.The Author covers considerable ground in referring to original archives at NA, and it is a different sort of a pleasure to read the foot notes to discover documents that one had no idea of! The first chapter covers hitherto uncovered ground in discussing the AMES (Radar) Units in the SEAC Sector.The second and third chapters are where the tactics used by the Allied air forces as well as the counter air campaign of 1944 is discussed at length. While other books tend to overwhelm the readers in discussing Orbats, this one simplifies the opposing numbers by referring to industrial output reports and intelligence reports.As a result, there are some surprising revelations – like the fact there were less than 70 Japanese fighters based in Burma during the end of 44, and virtually no air opposition by the time Rangoon fell in 1945. If the reader grasps the massive numbers put up by the Allied Air Forces in India in anticpationof the Burma Campaign, its easier to picture why aerial encounters were far and few in between. No wonder the intensity of the operations and aircrew losses was one tenth of what the allies experienced in the European theatre.The author is to be commended for his pioneering attempt at analysing the Far eastern air campaign, and the extensive references provided in the book . While the book is a serious academic study of the Far Eastern Air War, it may not be a sought after read for the average reader unless they share a deep passion for the CBI/SEAC theatre.

By Clarice I do like to read about ship wrecks - not only to learn of the resiliency of some People in the most Extreme conditions lacking Food, water- essentials, during disasters. Am Titanic buff.Well, I won't lie - it is because Lord Byron's grandfather was on the Wager that I decided to buy the book. I have only read bites of it.It's really a full report of the disaster! It has the documents written by Byron's father and there are drawings of the ship, etc...many. I won't spoil it for youThere were other books written on the disaster-C.H Layman's being the latest, and most detailed. It described the war in Spain too and the involvement With the British with vividity, and tell the persons of this affair.Well - just one of a kind book and again most detailed of all about the Wager. 5 stars!!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. eight essays on Confederate generals give a comprehensive view of the Civil War west of the Mississippi By Henry Berry Unlike most books of collected essays, rather than a mostly patchy view of the broader subject, the eight collected essays of this book give the reader a coherent and comprehensive, though not thorough, view of the Civil War in the West. The editorial focus set by the editors along with the subject of each chapter—namely the top general of a group of Confederate forces in the Trans-Mississippi region—and the chronological order of their treatment allows for this. Hewitt and Schott are both steeped in Civil War history and authors and editors of previous books on it. Authors of the essays are present or former academics in the field of history or military historians from various fields.Though the Confederate generals are the central subject of each chapter, chapter content ranges to descriptions and often discussions of battles and maneuvering and reasons for victory or defeat and import of this on the general tide of Confederate forces in the Trans-Mississippi. Especially insightful and relevant are the analyses of each general’s personality and strengths and weaknesses accounting for his victories or defeats. Where applicable, the general’s previous military experiences and accomplishments or shortcomings before taking over in the Trans-Mississippi are covered. In most cases however, the generals were “homegrown” having a connection with their area of action and forces they commanded. The aim of explaining both the person and the operations of each general lends itself to tying together the course of the Civil War in the region.The Confederate Trans-Mississippi generals found themselves in a situation created partly by geographical distance from the capital of the Confederacy in Richmond and partly by the reality that the fate of the Confederacy would be determined by the outcome of the conflict in the East. Nonetheless, the Confederate Trans-Mississippi armies and their generals had a strategic job to do in their region—and for the time of the War, they performed it sufficiently, if not finally successfully. The civilian populations had to be protected as genuine members of the Confederacy of Southern states; and the Trans-Mississippi was a needed source of food provisions for the Confederate armies. At no time did the Confederate leaders either military or political contemplate abandoning the Trans-Mississippi region—and therein lies the importance of these Confederate generals and interest in assessing them for understanding of the Civil War as undertaken in this outstanding collection of essays.

O'Toole A lot of the material included here has been found in one degree or another in Taylor's other work over the years but it's collected here in a fun book that, along with his other book WEIRD ILLINOIS, I plan to keep in the car to use as road trip guide. This is a journey down the Mother Road, Route 66 with stops along the way to see what's there and discuss what's lost to time. It's a lot of fun and a useful guide.There are a few books like this out there. What makes this one special is the obvious love of the subject matter the author has himself. He approaches it with a sense of wonder and, often, amusement that makes you feel like you're road tripping along with him. That's the value of this work and what makes it different from others of the same ilk.
