Madness in Mogadishu is both a powerful narrative of the U.S. Army's early clash with asymmetrical enemies and an honest, absorbing study in command. No outside historian could capture the immediacy, fear, courage, menace, and adrenaline rush of such fighting half so vividly and convincingly as Michael Whetstone, the commander who took the fight to a savage enemy. Outstanding!--Ralph Peters, Fox News Strategic Analyst and author of Cain at Gettysburg
"Mike Whetstone's book is a tough, hard-hitting memoir of infantry company command and modern warfare. In powerful prose, he provides a superb account of what it is like to lead a group of our best young men into battle against ruthless enemies. In the future, it will find pride of place alongside other American classics of close combat such as MacDonald's Company Commander and Ambrose's Band of Brothers. A must read for all military professionals."--Lt. Col. James V. Di Crocco III, Director of the Defense Strategy Course, U.S. Army War College
On the afternoon of October 3, 1993, two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down over the Somali capital of Mogadishu, leaving a handful of U.S. Army Rangers and Delta Force operators at the mercy of several thousand approaching militants. Ordered to "go find the glow"--the burning wreckage--hard-charging Capt. Mike Whetstone, commander of a Quick Reaction Company in the 10th Mountain Division, led part of the convoy sent to rescue the survivors. This powerfully vivid story of modern war is the intense firsthand account of the mission to find the crash site and retrieve the downed soldiers.

Review "Mike Whetstone's superbly written book is much more than just an important account of heroic service in chaotic and deadly Somalia in 1993-94--it's also an authentic description of the danger faced daily in Mogadishu and the equally lethal but lesser-known battles faced by U.S./U.N. troops trying to save the Somalis from themselves. The example and lessons offered by a heroic, well-prepared young combat commander and the bravery of the U.S. and Malaysian soldiers in his company team offer a timeless primer for every aspiring young leader. This book is a significant contribution to today's profession of arms!" (Lt. Gen. Thomas M. From Someone who was there in the enlisted ranks and who is very thankful to have leaders like CPT Whetstone By BRIAN This is a very well written book. From Someone who was there in the enlisted ranks and who is very thankful to have leaders like CPT Whetstone. I can tell you that he did everything for his soldiers. This was one of the closest units I ever served with. I would definitely encourage anyone who want to read about brotherhood, courage, valor , to read this. This unit came a long way being part of the cohort was just GREAT!! Awesome book!!

The complete story of the rescue of the Rangers during Blackhawk Down By Jason Wind I was one of the engineers attached to CPT Whetstone's company (C. co. 2-14 Inf) rescuing the rangers in the blackhawk down incident. All I can say is that this book portrays my entire deployment as it was and how the soldiers truly felt. Michael either has an incredible memory or wrote very thorough memoirs because his ability to convey "how the soldiers felt" at the time could only be written by someone who was there. Although I was a lowly private and he was a powerful company commander, after reading Madness in Mogadishu, you come to realize that, despite our difference in rank, we all shared the same feelings and emotions. This book is an absolute must read for anyone who wants the full scoop of what happened in Somalia during the latter half of 1993. It fills in many of the blanks left out by Blackhawk Down and in all honesty, it is the by far the most complete and detailed account of the US involvement in Somalia.Yes, it would have been nice to have some maps/diagrams in the book to help visualize the words written in the book, but other than that, it was a perfect read.

Alsbrooks I'm E/4 Specialist. S. Alsbrooks. I was. Capt Whetstone's. R T O ( Radio. Transmitter Operator) in Mogadishu ,Somalia. It's hard to believe it's been over 20 years since the battle took place. I will tell you that Captain Whetstone was one of the most intelligent officers in the whole United States Army. I was so proud to be by his side along with many fine young soldiers. He challenged you to be your very best everyday,no matter what it was. I'll be perfectly honest. I didn't think considering the overwhelming odds against us that we would survive this scary conflict. But under the superior leadership of L T C. Bill David and Captain Whetstone we accomplished our mission and made it back alive. We did suffer some causlties too. We were a band of brothers in a city of people trying to kill us. I'm proud along with my brothers to have served in the 10th Mountain Division in Somalia 1993. I haven't read the book yet. Mines on the way. I really didn't need to because I lived it along with Captain Whetstone. It taught me an awful lot about Courage, Teamwork. I'd go to hell and back with LTC. David and Captain Whetstone. 10th mountain leads the way !!!!!!! Climb to glory.
