At 6:30 a.m. on 27 January 1945, Col. Friedrich von Lindeiner, the court martialed and exiled "gentleman" ex-Commandant of Stalag Luft Iii, sat in the waiting room of the Görlitz train station hoping to return to Sagan, Germany, to fight the approaching Russians. The distance from Görlitz to Sagan was 28.5 miles. He arrived fifteen hours later as 10,000 Allied prisoners of war were evacuating his former camp. Like them, he would soon view the war from both inside and outside the barbed wire. Later, as a prisoner of war, he was held by the British for two years before returning to a devastated and divided Germany.

By Greene Monster Mrs. Walton has again written a captivating book. Her first book, "Rhapsody in Junk" chronicles her search for the story of her bombardier father's B-24 shot down in the summer of 1944 and his year in WWII POW Camp, Stalag Luft III, in Sagan, Poland. Her second, "From Interrogation to Liberation," written with co-author Michael Eberhardt, present's readers with an incredible collection of stories about interment in the same camp. In this story of Friedrich von Lindernier, Stalag Luft III's Commandant, Walton and Eberhardt, present the life of a man charged by his higher up Nazi officers with the responsibility of maintaining order and containing thousands of allied aviators bent on disorder, escape...and survival in the confinement, harsh circumstances and separation from family of a high security POW camp. Most who have only a cursory knowledge of POW camps would say that a man in that position would most likely be "sub-human." Combining extensive detailed research, interviews with POWs from SLIII, correspondence between the Commandant and his family and personal time with the daughter of vonLindernier's secretary, the authors bring depth to and humanize this complex man. This book is like no other written on the POW experience. I highly recommend it.
