Counting Pixie Dust

How much pixie dust is there at Walt Disney World, anyway? Can you count it? Nope. But there are many things at Disney World you can count, and Tony Caselnova has counted and measured and calculated and quantified them all.

You'll learn things about the Disney World theme parks and resorts that you never knew before—and that you never thought to ask.

Think you know Space Mountain? Tony knows the length of the tracks, the speed of the rockets, how many guests can ride per hour, how much of the ride is below ground, the weight of the concrete beams that support the mountain, and much, much more to amaze and edify any Disney fan (and especially the ones who think they know it all).

And that's just Space Mountain. Every Disney World theme park, resort, attraction, and show is "enumerated" in the book, as well as Disney dining, Disney transportation, Disney recreation, and Disney water parks. You'll even find out how much Disney pays in taxes!

Disney by the Numbers: a unique look at your favorite theme park!

A number filled trivia book about Walt Disney World By Wulfstan This is a number filled trivia book about Walt Disney World, containing more facts and figures than most casual fans would want to know. But of course- a lot of us aren't very "casual" in our fandom of the Disney Parks, are we? In fact the opposite!Did you know that: Prince William, Prince Harry and Princess Diana rode Splash Mountain three times in one trip? That the Prince Charming Carrousel in the Magic Kingdom was originally built in 1917? (note two "r"s in the spelling here)That the Carousel of Progress "ride' takes almost 21 minutes? (and it's air conditioned! But Ellen's Energy Adventure is 45 minutes!)That they grow 30 tons of produce in Living with the Land each year, and you likely have eaten some of it?Those huge turkey legs? They weigh about 1.5 pounds and come from 50 pound turkeys! One interesting section near the back details WDW's conservation efforts.I often say a book is "readable" and a "real page turner"- but this is NOT a book to sit down and read all at one sitting. I did, so you dont have to!Who should read this book? Besides Disney trivia nuts like me? This would be perfect for the father who wants his kids to continue thinking "Dad knows everything!". Or for the shy kid, who can feel great when spouting off a cool factoid when everyone esle is standing in line, bored. Or for winning bar bets in Trader Sams....

And Tony even signed and numbered it for me when I went to a Disney Parks Podcast meetup at WDW. The format is organized by location and attraction/event and easy to navigate. Some of it is just unbelievable and while you are learning numbers you are also learning other fun facts that you didn't know you didn't know!

And yes, I understand the author disclaimed against some of these errors; however, a bit of editing and fact checking could go a long way. Most of the errors I noticed were spelling and grammar, some were related to the numbers themselves. Again (I really have started to feel repetitive) Theme Park Press just does not spend enough time editing. From simple spelling mistakes (Barack Obama's name is misspelled) to larger tense issues (an attraction that is closed should be referred to as past tense, not present), the book is just chock full of editing issues. Unfortunately, I think Bob McLain and his team try to pump books out too quickly and don't spend enough time in the editing room. Other errors did relate to the numbers, but were slight (WDW employs 74,000 cast members as of our current Eyes and Ears printings for cast) or seemed mistyped (Cinderella castle has 27 towers/turrets, not 3,727). Other facts are repeated (sometimes with different numbers) within the same section. For instance, one paragraph (I believe on Pirates) states that there are 20 boats, then two lines later uses 23 boats. I also would have appreciated a list of sources. As a Disney Cast Member, many of the numbers presented are ones we are provided in various media - others are not (property tax information, etc). This should be properly sourced (and yes, I understand the book is meant to be "for fun," that doesn't preclude it from needing sources). Overall this could be a fun addition to a vacation ("Johnny, did you know how many of those hot dogs they sell in a year!?") or for someone with a love of numbers. As an accountant and Disney Cast Member, I appreciate a good set of numbers.
