[Finalist, 2016 Next Generation Indie Book Awards (Category: Military)] [Finalist, 2016 National Indie Excellence Awards (Category: Military Non-Fiction)] South Carolina servicemen made an exceptional and early contribution in WW II, when in February 1942 a group of them, all products of the state's four pre-war ROTC programs, were assigned to the 32nd "Red Arrow" Infantry Division (Michigan-Wisconsin National Guard). In this odd and expedient pairing, and in one of the earliest Infantry units to be ordered overseas after the Pearl Harbor attack, they participated in the first offensive waged in the Pacific Theater under General Douglas MacArthur's command. In victory, the Red Arrows suffered over 90% casualties there at Buna, Papua New Guinea. Those who emerged from that first tragic and defining battle stayed on to form the Division's core of leadership for the remainder of the war, and in doing so amassed some of the highest total hours in combat in U.S. Army history. The title "32 Answered" alludes not only to the Division's nomenclature but also to the thirty-two total documented South Carolina reservists discovered in the course of this research, who stepped up to answer the call to duty soon after the war emergency's onset.

By Tom Schulz Some of the South Carolina officers reported to my father so I believe I have some credibility to assess this book.. The Southern officers were undoubtedly heroes without the notoriety deserved, until this book. Doctor Camps book is well written, extremely well researched, and is not unrealistically biased. The New Guinea campaign may have been the toughest of the war in the Pacific as it was an initial learning experience regarding jungle warfare, disease, supply chains, weaponry, tactics, clothing and more. Mistakes in command and this learning experience was valuable as the 32nd Red arrow Division progressed up the islands to the Philippines and the Villa Verde Trail and the ultimate Japanese surrender.

By Kelly Durham 32 ANSWERED is a remarkably well-researched history of the 32nd Infantry Division, the highly decorated Red Arrow Division. One of the first Army divisions committed against the Japanese, the 32nd fought in New Guinea where it dealt the vaunted Japanese jungle fighters their first defeat. Commitment to the liberation of the Philippines followed a second campaign in New Guinea. After the Japanese surrender, the 32nd was assigned occupation duty in Japan. The Red Arrow Division was one of MacArthur's mainstays in the Southwest Pacific from the beginning to the end.Historian Joe Camp highlights through liberal use of first-hand accounts the horrendous battlefield conditions that brought National Guard units from Wisconsin and Michigan together with junior officers from the southeast, particularly South Carolina, to form one of the Pacific war's storied divisions. In addition to the battle-tested Japanese, the 32nd's inexperienced soldiers had to overcome equatorial heat, insufficient logistics and disease with uncommon bravery, grit, determination and sacrifice. This is a "must read" for serious students of World War II in the Pacific.
