Titanic and Other Ships by Charles Herbert Lightoller. Charles Herbert Lightoller (1874–1952) was the second mate (second officer) on board the RMS Titanic, and the most senior officer to survive the Titanic disaster. Lightoller was decorated for gallantry as a naval officer in the First World War and later, in retirement, further distinguished himself in the Second World War by providing and sailing as a volunteer on one of the "little ships" during the perilous Dunkirk evacuation. This book details the wildly adventurous career of Titanic officer Charles Herbert Lightoller. After surviving the Titanic disaster, Lightoller went on to command a torpedo boat in the Nore Defence Flotilla, and two destroyers of the Dover Patrol. A first-hand account, giving a vivid picture of how the "gentlemen of the other firm" felt towards the U-boats. Lightoller sank Werner Fürbringer's UB-110, and it is interesting to compare his account of their encounter with the one in Fips.

By Jennifer Quail I almost gave this four stars, solely for some Kindle formatting problems and typos which I suspect are from an editor having to work with a scan or hand-typing the original in, and for the editor leaving out the dedication ("For my wife, who made me do it.") But I couldn't. I was simply charmed from the first sentence (and though he's woefully short on details of their first meeting, I'm sure the future Mrs. Lightoller was, too!) While any serious student of shipwrecks, the Titanic and otherwise, would do well to view his recounting with a charitably skeptical eye, if you want to feel as if you're sitting down with a real old sailor from the last great sea-faring age, read this book. From a teenage boy who ran away to sea getting a free meal in old 'Frisco' to a wreck on a deserted island to gold-prospecting in the Klondike, C. H. Lightoller was already a seasoned adventurer long before he found himself in the midst of the most famous shipwreck in history. While the book doesn't flow as smoothly as a professional writer's might, it feels as if you're listening to a sea captain telling tales. A must for not only Titanic fans but anyone who enjoys a grand adventure tale. You'll be left, like I was, wondering who should play him and Sylvia in the movie they ought to make.A caution to modern readers: check your politically-correct hypersensitivity at the door. This was written in the inter-war period by an Englishman born in 1870.

Lightoller, the Titanic and More By Amazon Customer Written in a very matter-of-fact style, even about the sinking of Titanic, Lightoller covers a lot of ground from his days as a newbie on sailing ships through an apparently very successful career. Early stuff is fascinating, and the Titanic portion is important as a first-hand variance with all the material that has come down over 100 years.

A great autobiographical journey By Shopaholic I purchased the book because of the Titanic content and became fascinated with Lightoller's life story. Well written and humerous. The only problem is the occassional spelling and formatting errors used converting the book to Kindle format.
