A Grand Circle Tour
Noted rail expert Steve DeGaetano welcomes you aboard for this definitive, in-depth history of the Disneyland Railroad, with hundreds of vintage and current photos, and a fascinating, behind-the-scenes account of how Disney operates its system of trains, stations, and roundhouse.
The story of the Disneyland Railroad begins with its chief engineer, Walt Disney, whose love for the steam locomotives of his youth led his Imagineers to create the same experience for millions of park guests, with continuous service for over six decades.
DeGaetano reveals this fascinating world unseen by most Disneyland guests, with:
- A history of the five Disneyland locomotives, and how a steam engine works
- What the train crew—engineer, fireman, conductor—really do, and why they're the most highly trained of Disney cast members
- A history of the Disneyland train stations, as well as a special chapter on the famous Lilly Belle
- What it's like inside the Disneyland roundhouse, where the steam trains are maintained and repaired
- Plus builder's plates, conductor's badges, spiels, collectibles, and much more
Welcome aboard, ladies and gentlemen, for a "grand circle tour" of the Disneyland Railroad!

By Steve Stuart As someone who grew up in Southern California, Disneyland always held a special place for me. During that time, I made (at least) an annual visit to Disneyland. Although riding on the DL&SF Railroad was always a part of each visit, I never ‘craved’ riding on it, in spite of always enjoying the experience. As my interest in Disneyland grew along with my age, I befriended many folks who also worked for “The Mouse”, allowing me access to many things the ordinary visitor could never experience. But still no special entrée to the trains. So it was with great interest when I heard through the grapevine a new book on the Disneyland Railroad as being in the works, written by Steve DeGaetano. I was already acquainted with Steve’s knowledge of the DL Railroad trains through other sources, and the buzz was good.I really didn’t know what to expect when I opened the cover, but in many ways it “all” seems to be here. In addition to the background history of the railroad and the people who were instrumental in carrying-out Walt’s dream, each of the five engines encompassing the DLRR fleet has its own chapter; and the “rolling stock”, including the Lilly Belle is discussed in detail. I was (pleasantly) surprised to find good descriptions/discussions on the technical-side of railroading, including the boiler, itself – but still very approachable to the non-technically inclined amongst us.But the book does not stop there. To wit: Incredibly-detailed illustrations (by Preston Narattisai); the caboose; the roundhouse; uniforms; attraction posters; collectibles; conductor badges; builder’s plates; stations; spiels; the diorama; and even models-! It all seems to be here. There’s even a chapter describing a ride in the engine cab, while the train makes its ‘grand circle tour’ around Disneyland. It’s true this edition of the book only contains B&W images, and although disappointing, was NOT a deal breaker for this reader, for all the reasons listed above. In fact, I only wish this book had been available, lo those many years ago, during all those journeys when the experience seemed somehow ordinary – when in fact it is anything but – and this book clearly explains the uniqueness and wonder of the Disneyland Railroad.

Westby As a knowledgeable fan of Walt Disney and the history of his parks, I’m really impressed by this book. While I know much about the park, I’ve wanted to learn more about the history of the Disneyland Railroad in particular, as well as the day-to-day workings and what it takes to keep this attraction running for millions of guests each year. This book definitely meets that goal, all while being respectful of Walt Disney and his railroad legacy. I’m impressed with the amount of in-depth information it contains, covering everything from the history of the early engines, its rolling stock, conductors, stations, collectibles and more, as well as the daily workings of the railroad itself. I’ve read many, many books about Disneyland, so it was a pleasure to discover some new never-before-published information and photos. The color (I have the $39.95 edition) and historical black and white photos are an outstanding complement to the information, but I have to say the detailed drawings and schematics of the engines and rolling stock are what really impress me the most.If you’re a fan of Disneyland, or have a budding or even serious interest in the Disneyland Railroad, then you’ll greatly enjoy reading and exploring this book.
