The stories in her book are outstanding, and she supports her ideas with material from famous philosophers. The chapter on mental triggers contains very practical information, and this book is a must-read for anyone wanting to climb the ladder of success.

On August 12, 1944, Lieutenant Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., heir to one of America's most glamorous fortunes, son of the disgraced former ambassador to Great Britain, and big brother to freshly minted PT-109 hero JFK, hoisted himself up into a highly modified B-24 Liberator bomber. The munitions he was carrying that day were fifty percent more powerful than TNT.

Kennedy's mission was part of Operation Aphrodite/Project Anvil, a desperate American effort to rescue London from a rain of German V-1 and V-2 missiles. The decision to use these bold but crude precursors to modern-day drones against German V-weapon launch sites came from Air Corps high command. The catch was that live pilots were needed to get these flying bombs off the ground and headed toward their targets. Joe Jr. was the first naval aviator to fly such a mission. And―in the biggest manmade explosion before Hiroshima―it killed him.

By AmazonFan I was not alive during the Kennedy White House years of Camelot so I had no heightened sense of awe of the Kennedy family when I picked up Lost Destiny. I did know a bit about Joseph P. Kennedy Sr.'s disastrous turn as U.S. Ambassador to England during World War II and that JPK Jr., the son that was supposedly destined to be president, died in combat. But other than that, I was pretty ignorant of the details of the two parallel stories detailed by Alan Axelrod in Lost Destiny - that of the Kennedy family and the other of the ill-fated WWII Operation Aphrodite/Project Anvil.Unlike some other reviewers, I found there to be a lot of information on JPK Jr. as well as his family. And frankly, the word dysfunctional doesn't begin to describe the Kennedy clan during this time.To JPK Sr., life was about the calculated manipulation of anyone and everyone to get what he wanted, including the presidency for his eldest son. For JPK Jr., he arrogantly assumed this to be his right and his military service merely a resume builder. At no time does he exhibit any sense of duty or patriotic desire to serve and defend his country. He does not come across as someone I would like very much.When the early military experiments with unmanned aircraft intersects with JPK Jr.'s burning desire to one up his younger brother's heroism in the Pacific, the result is both flawed and fatal.Axelrod has done exhaustive research on both fronts and presents detailed and enlightening information in a compelling narrative.I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot of from it - both about the early stages of unmanned military aviation and about JPK Jr. and some of the truly heroic men serving our country at that time. That in itself is a great tribute to our greatest generation.

Focus is on the military history - Kennedy is only part of the story By Kate Stout This book tries to weave two stories together, the story of Joe Kennedy Jr, JFK's older brother, and the development of pilot guided bombs during WWi and WWII. For me the marriage is not terribly successful, but the military history was fairly interesting.Joe Kennedy Jr looms large in the Kennedy myth - the brilliant eldest son, gifted in many ways, tragically killed during WWII while participating in a mission that involved using untried technology to deliver a massive bomb to a strategic German site. After his death, JFK heroically picks of the burden of his father's aspirations.This book does tell the story of Joe Kennedy Sr, an aggressive businessman and politico who becomes the American Ambassador to England just before WII. It also tells the story of the two eldest sons, Joe Jr and JFK, each of whom is encouraged to excel and exceed. There is a fierce rivalry between them, egged on by their parents.The first two chapters of the book describe the Kennedy story, while the next five chapters discuss the background of the German efforts to bomb England, the development of the doodlebug bombs, various UK and US programs to create guided missiles of various sorts.In the final two chapters, the US Army and Navy eventually come up with a scheme to load an aircraft with explosives and use a pilot to get the plane in the air. After the pilot parachutes out, the flying bomb will be directed to the target by remote control from another airplane, which much stay in visual contact at all times. Highly risky for all involved, especially for the pilots who had to parachute out of the explosive filled plane. During the initial attempts, several pilots were injured, and one was killed. No flying bomb made it to the target.Joe Kennedy was involved in the second wave of attempts to use this technology, and he too, did not survive.The military history is pretty good, but the confused nature of the book really took away from the overall interest for me.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A llittle-known piece of WWII and Kennedy history. By N. Caruso A very interesting story about the "other Kennedy" son, Joseph Kennedy Junior. A very well-told book - actually three stories in one.The first is a brief history of the Kennedy family - particularly Joseph Kennedy Sr.; who builds a family legacy of wealth and privilege. His role as Ambassador to England during the frantic times at the start of WWII is fascinating, supporting appeasement (avoiding war with Germany - even at the expense of caving in on some of their initiatives; so as not to harm business. It is the story of how he raised a family of privileged children.The second section talks about Joseph Jr. and his ongoing rivalry with his younger brother Jack. The two are highly competitive, and both fight their father and the military (especially Jack, who has serious health issues) in order to serve in combat.There is an assumption that Joseph Junior will someday run for President of the United States, and that military service was a prerequisite for doing so (unlike today, where many children of privilege are not expected to serve their country's military). Joe and Jack both get what they want - Jack to a PT boat on the South Pacific, and Joe Jr. Flying submarine patrols for the Navy. The story of how both were not content to just serve their country, but to stand out from the pack in some heroic way is quite compelling.The third section is the story of Operation Aphrodite - a bold somewhat frantic attempt to defeat the Nazi's V-1 and V-2 Rocket program. From military leaders like General Doolittle to pioneers in the electronic/technology areas, all came together to try and eliminate the threat Germany posed to Lo0ndon and the English countryside. The story how the unlikely idea of taking aging and worn out bombers, filling them up with high explosives and crashing them into German fortifications was the science fiction of that day. The book also did a good job of presenting the conditions in England during the run-up to the Second World War - militarily and politically.Finally, the missions themselves where a handful of planes and crews took off with the goal of destroying Germany's buzz-bomb capacity - only to go down in history as a dismal failure - no targets hit and several injuries and fatalities - foremost being the explosion (the largest ever seen by man before the atomic bombs in Japan) that took the life of Kennedy and his navigator.If you are interested in World War II or the Kennedy family, this book is a must read.I gave the book 4 stars because, while generally well written, there were several sections that were duplicated - which was a bit tedious. All in all, however, a good book!

The Virginians -When the Old and New Worlds find each other troubling By Greg Deane William Makepeace Thackeray's novel, The Virginians: A Tale of the Last Century, was first published in a single volume in 1859. A number of characters in Thackeray's novel Henry Esmond reappear, though much older, in The Virginians, so that it is a generational sequel. But in this work the contrast is more concerned about interactions between the New World and the Old World, rather than between the intrigues between supporters of the Stuarts and the new dynasty established by William of Orange in 1688.The wide geographic and social panorama was apparently hard for Thackeray to control, and his execution of the story seems desultory. Thus Anthony Trollope expressed qualified praise for the work saying: "There is not a page of it vacant or dull. But he who takes it up to read as a whole, will find that it is the work of a desultory writer, to whom it is not infrequently difficult to remember the incidents of his own narrative."The adventures of the sibling protagonists, George and Harry Esmond Warrington, unfold mainly in Virginia and in England, and further afield in Canada and Europe, beginning with the Seven Years War and continuing beyond the American Revolution. Historical figures abound, including Benjamin Franklin, inventor and statesman; General George Braddock, who led redcoats to one their worst defeats against native populations; George Washington, as a young officer in the colonial army, and General James Wolfe who won French Canada for the British empire.One of the dominant themes of the work is the pervasiveness of vanity, a theme Thackeray dealt with most vituperatively in Vanity Fair but also a quality he uses to ridicule all the characters in this work, some much more viciously than others. Another theme that he explores is the division that politics can bring about in families, so that the two Warrington brothers are on different sides during the American Revolution. With this theme in mind, Thackeray begins his work with the observation, "On the library wall of one of the most famous writers of America, there hang two crossed swords, which his relatives wore in the great War of Independence".The work is worth reading for Thackeray's historical insights and the way in which he demonstrates how public events impact on private lives; how jealousies and affections can persist over several thousand miles and scores of years of separation. But apart from being desultory, Thackeray allows himself to become ensnared by his own love of detail, about his fancies of the effect of a tone or a look or the setting of a hat or a ruff. It may be the author could have saved himself the trouble these details took as many readers may be likely to skip over them.The Virginians

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Mr T. at his best! By L. Baker Being part English and not always proud of it, I delighted in reading this nearly 900-page kindle book. It took me over 12 days of almost non-stop reading. I read slow! I got that flu so this book is how I recovered. Not that I am up on Old English history, poetry, folklore and what- have-you but it was worth reading especially with all the first-hand accounts of the succession from the mother country including names of their Generals, battles and many American heroes were included. SO very fascinating! I loved every minute especially the clean non-graphic accounts of marital bliss and other odd relationships that were woven in as back stories. Mr. T. is one of the finest Novelists of the 18th/19th Century. No one holds a candle to his word-play, puns and visual word-pictures. We are right there in the moment. We are living in the mansions, eating with the guests, playing cards with the table-gamers and losing our money, cassocks, shirts and the even a plantation or two. Although one things is for sure, we are not really losing anything but our time. After the tenth day, my husband looks over from the dishpan and says, "Dear, why don't you pick out a book of the Bible"? I say, This isn't just any book dear, this is American History"! I finish it two days later. I recommend this novel to anyone who has twelve days+ to toss away.

I really liked the characters at first, but they started to get on my nerves after a while. There was some interesting history and some good parts, but I would say the book as a whole was just average. It is the sequel to the History of Henry Edmond, Esq, and I would recommend reading that first as there are lots of allusions made to events that happened in that book, although this book takes place a while later and has different characters (descendants of characters in Henry Edmond).

About the Author THE AUTHOR: Muhammad Husain Jah (Born: ? - Died: 1891-93?) was one of Urdu's greatest prose stylists and an accomplished poet. His father, Syed Ghulam Husain, was a rammal or diviner. Hardly any information exists about Jah's life before he published his first composition, TILISM-E FASAHAT, in 1874 through the Naval Kishore Press, Lucknow. After Jah's success with TILISM-E FASAHAT, Naval Kishore Press hired him to compose the TILISM-E HOSHRUBA. A first volume was published in 1883. According to Jah's own account, he compiled the fantasy using traditions from the three written accounts of Mir Ahmad Ali Rampuri/Amba Prasad Rasa, Muhammad Amir Khan, and Ghulam Raza. He also used traditions from a fellow dastan narrator and dastan writer, Shaikh Tasadduq Husain. The second volume of TILISM-E HOSHRUBA came out in 1884. But there was a delay of four years before the third volume was published in 1888-89. Jah was devastated by the deaths of his young son and daughter, which occurred while he wrote the third volume. For awhile he even stopped writing and only resumed it at the encouragement of publisher Munshi Naval Kishore. After the printing of the fourth volume of TILISM-E HOSHRUBA in 1890, the Naval Kishore Press replaced Jah with another Lucknow dastan narrator, Ahmed Husain Qamar. The time recorded for the death of Jah's young children and a comparison of his contemporaries' ages reveals that Jah died at a relatively young age.

THE TRANSLATOR: Musharraf Ali Farooqi (Born July 26, 1968) is a novelist, author and translator. His critically acclaimed translation of Indo-Islamic classic THE ADVENTURES OF AMIR HAMZA (2007) was published by the Random House Modern Library. His children's picture book THE COBBLER'S HOLIDAY OR WHY ANTS DON'T WEAR SHOES (2008) came out from A Neal Porter Book/Roaring Brook Press. His novel THE STORY OF A WIDOW (2008) was published by Alfred A. Knopf Canada. A translation of contemporary Urdu poet Afzal Ahmed Syed's selected poetry, ROCOCO AND OTHER WORLDS (2010) is forthcoming from the Wesleyan University Press Poetry Series.

We are told that at the bottom of the untold past, a group of sorcerers met to create a tilism or magical world by using occult sciences2 to infuse inanimate matter with the spirits of planetary and cosmic forces. In the tilism, the sorcerers exercised powers that defied the laws of God and the physical world. They created illusions, transferred spirits between bodies, transmuted matter, made talismans, and configured and exploited Earth's inherent physical forces to create extraordinary marvels. Once the tilism was created, the sorcerers named it Hoshruba. A sorcerer named Lachin ruled Hoshruba in its early years. Then one of his deputies, the cunning sorcerer Afrasiyab, deposed his master and usurped the throne. Afrasiyab became the Emperor of Hoshruba and Master of the Tilism. Afrasiyab and his sorceress wife, Empress Heyrat, ruled over Hoshruba's three regions: Zahir the Manifest, Batin the Hidden, and Zulmat the Dark. These regions were also tilisms and contained countless dominions and smaller tilisms filled with thousands of buildings, enclosures, gardens and palaces governed by sorcerer princes and sorceress princesses. Ordinary citizens of Hoshruba lived in the region of Zahir the Manifest. Empress Heyrat and the emperor's ministers, peers and confidants made their abode in Batin the Hidden. Zulmat the Dark was a secluded region of Hoshruba to which few had access. It was inhabited by two of Hoshruba's most powerful sorceresses. An enchanted river called the River of Flowing Blood divided the regions of Zahir and Batin. A bridge that was made of smoke and guarded by two smoke lions stretched over it. It was called the Bridge of the Magic Fairies and from it a three-tiered tower rose to the skies. On the lowest tier of this tower, magic fairies stood alert, holding trumpets and clarions to their lips. From the second tier, another group of magic fairies constantly tossed pearls into the river to the fish that swam, carrying them in their mouths. On the topmost tier, gigantic Abyssinians arrayed in double rows skirmished together with swords. The blood that flowed from their wounds poured into the water below and gave the River of Flowing Blood its name. Emperor Afrasiyab moved freely between the three regions of Hoshruba. Whenever anyone called out his name in the tilism, Afrasiyab's magic alerted him to the call. The emperor's fortune revealed itself in the palms of his hands. His left hand warned him of inauspicious moments and the right hand revealed auspicious ones. He also possessed the Book of Sameri, which contained an account of every event inside and outside the tilism. And he had a magic mirror that projected his body into his court during his absence, and many magic doubles who replaced him when he was in imminent danger. Besides sorcerers and sorceresses, Afrasiyab also commanded magic slaves and magic slave girls, who fought at his command and performed any and all tasks assigned them. Emperor Afrasiyab was among the seven immortal sorcerers of Hoshruba who could not be killed while their doppelgangers lived. But every tilism had a fixed lifespan and a tilism key that contained directions for its unravelling. The conqueror of a tilism was one who would use that key to unravel the tilism at the appointed time. Over the years, the whereabouts of Hoshruba's tilism key was forgotten. As Hoshruba's life neared its end, Emperor Afrasiyab resolved to defend his empire and tilism and foil the tilism's conqueror when he appeared. Unbeknown to Emperor Afrasiyab the Master of the Tilism events were already unfolding outside Hoshruba that would soon test his resolve. The false god Laqa was in flight after suffering fresh defeats at the hands of Amir Hamza the Lord of the Auspicious Planetary Conjunction, whose armies and spies hotly pursued him. Each day brought Laqa and Amir Hamza a little nearer to Hoshruba.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Hoshruba is fascinating but two-dimensional By Syed Imran Hoshruba is a very good example of the kind of stories we grew up hearing. The good hero always wins and the evil sorcerers who imprison fair damsels get killed. The characters in Hoshruba do not rise above these stereotypes. Farooqui does a good job of translating the magical and mythical nature of Hoshruba. But I wish that instead of being a faithful translator, he would cut to the chase and add some modern dimensions to the story.After a while, it gets tedious reading about how the tricksters get trapped by sorcerers and then kill them using their cunning. There is no middle ground in Hoshruba: the tricksters are the pinnacle of cunning, the fair damsels are all beautiful beyond imagination, the sorcerers are vile and powerful and the lovers are the epitome of fidelity. Its black or white with no shades of gray.The characters are well-described - but not well developed. Familiarity with the characters, their motives and thoughts is assumed.

Imagine it as eight volumes instead of three, totaling more than 8000 pages. That in simplest terms is "Hoshruba."But in this case we're talking about an Urdu epic, a vast magical fantasy penned in India in the 19th century. The translator is fresh from a publishing triumph, "The Adventures of Amir Hamza." The Prophet's uncle Hamza, transformed into a superhero, is a key player in this tale as well. But the story centers on Afrasiyab, a sorcerer/emperor who rules over Hoshruba (meaning "Senses-Ravishing"), a magical world or tilism where anything can happen and usually does.Look for deceit, betrayal, romance, war, violence, bizarre plot twists and of course magic. Sorcerers and sorceresses abound in the thousands; giants, monsters and demons materialize when you least expect it. In the most common clashes, sorcerers battle "tricksters" - warriors who use cleverness to prevail, rather than spells.Afrasiyab may be an "evil emperor," but his character and foibles, coupled with the great challenges arrayed against him, make him far more interesting than any conventional hero.This cycle of tales was born in Lucknow, brainchild of storyteller Mir Ahmed Ali, who wanted to thrill audiences with a turbocharged, freewheeling variant of the much older Indo-Persian Amir Hamza epic. The first published version of the Hoshruba tales was written by Jah, another Lucknow storyteller, in the early 1880s.Translator Farooqi brings a magic of his own to this first book in the series. He prepares the reader with useful background on magical matters, Amir Hamza and the Tilism and its Master. Also appended are useful lists of characters and notes on their powers and weapons. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A valuable resource! By William G. Pegg; Executive Coach I found this book to be very interesting. It is exactly what the title states and that means it is not for the abject beginner. There are seven sections which include 37 different short papers or essays. What is interesting is that in this, the third edition, the authors have included some web content that you have to download. For example I found that the articles on "Women Succeeding Globally", and"Why 360s Do not Work and How They Can" particularly interesting. And to conclude any time that I have an opportunity to read essays/ articles by Edgar H. Schein I feel enriched.

Life in Cape Charles "Before It Was Quaint" By George Southern Anyone who grew up reading Laura Ingall Wilder’s Little House on the Prairie series will especially enjoy Parsons’ book, because while the locale is far removed from the prairie, the fresh, honest, easy-reading evokes Wilder’s style. Parsons tells it as she remembers it, and she has a gift for honing in on the interesting and skipping the mundane.In the chapter “Swimming Hole,” for example, Parsons relates that “In August of 1945, the city fathers arranged to have the existing swimming hole [in the Bay] dredged to make it larger and deep enough for diving. The next summer, I was nine years old, and allowed to go into the water myself. . . . That day, no one realized that the new improvement had created a strong undertow. I was the first swimmer to be sucked into it. Helpless to extract myself as I was drawn below, I tried to fight against the downward force. During my struggle to surface, I could see the events of my short life, like the projected images of a film, unrolling within my brain. Fortunately, before I drowned, I was pulled out of the vortex by Mary Catherine Ames, our family physician’s teenage daughter. . . . Unfortunately, several adults who were unaware of the undertow lost their lives in the swimming hole over the next few years.”On a happier but still ironic note, Parsons writes that as a child, “I equated crabs with poverty. Crabs were so plentiful that the less fortunate could always catch enough to make a meal, as the crab shells scattered around their dwellings so clearly attested. I could not understand why my parents, obviously lacking the insight that I had into the lowly status of the crab, would drive miles up Route 13 to the Shickshinny Restaurant because they considered the crab cakes there such a delicacy.”And now, of course, crab cakes are more expensive than steak.At only 140 pages, the book can be devoured as one would a jar of peanuts or bag of potato chips. One page after the next, you really can’t stop. And don’t skip over the Preface, as readers often do. Here’s how it begins:“Don’t tell anybody that you come from over here, Mama.” The year was 1975. My ten-year-old daughter and I had just arrived from our home in Richmond and were driving along the beachfront of Cape Charles, Virginia. Experiencing a surge of nostalgia, I turned away from her. Glancing through the car window toward the horizon of the Chesapeake Bay, I could see part of the beach upon which I had spent so many pleasant hours in my youth. It was now choked with a tangle of sea oats and wiry beach grasses. The boardwalk, where I used to sit to watch the sunsets on summer evenings, was deserted. The benches that once lined the beachfront were gone. We had turned off the town’s main street, with its boarded-up storefronts. Across the street, an empty, unused plot of land gave no indication that at one time, the town’s focal point, a bustling railroad/ferry complex, had thrived on that spot. Instead, an unattractive cement factory dominated the view. A few years before, my daughter had been enchanted with the area, but now she was ten, old enough to be embarrassed by the depressing sight of her mother’s former hometown.”But Parsons concludes the Preface on an upbeat note: “Recently, I have returned to find that the community is slowly redefining itself. It now boasts a modest tourist industry, which has resulted in the renovation of a number of the old buildings that line a main street that once again contains shops as well as a couple of nice restaurants. An Irish pub occupies an old bank building. Some of the homes of former residents have been restored and are rented to vacationers who come to Cape Charles to enjoy the sun, the beach, deep-sea fishing, and tours of the wildlife preserve at nearby Kiptopeke. During the 1970s and 1980s, magazine and newspaper articles often referred to Cape Charles as a depressed community, or even as a ghost town. I now hear it called “historic,” “charming,” or “quaint.” Well, I lived in Cape Charles before it was considered charming or quaint, so for those who have just been introduced to Cape Charles and wonder how and why this town existed in such a rural setting, for those who had to move away in order to earn a living, and for those who stayed and care to reminisce, here are a few snapshots of life in Cape Charles before it was “quaint.”

By Margaret, mom of three This book is a wonderful quick read about the charming town of Cape Charles on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Having vacationed in picturesque Cape Charles on the Chesapeake Bay, I could envision the exact location of the author's stories as she weaves together the memories of her idyllic childhood. Cape Charles is today, a pleasant, slow-paced, beach and golf town but was once a bustling, important center during WWII. The author's descriptions of watching the ships and soldiers rolls in, recollections of taking the ferry to Norfolk to buy provisions, and even the witty stories about daily living, transport the reader to a time gone by in this "Mayberry-esque" coastal town. Every story left me wanting to know more and wishing that my own children could grow up in such a picture-perfect town and time in history. I can't wait to go back to Cape Charles to revisit the scenic locations of Parsons' tales of mischief and wonderment.

In "Portrait of a Town," she takes you into her world growing up in Cape Charles, Virginia. Her fluid style of writing invites your undivided attention. Her descriptions become word paintings that enable you to "feel" the events she describes with her. It was a pleasure to work with Pat in the Lifelong Learning Institute "Writer's Critique" sessions as she initially unfolded her story, and also to be asked to contribute graphite sketches to illustrate her book. If you're interested in the Chesapeake Bay and its culture, in Virginia's unique Eastern Shore, and in dwelling for awhile in a small town during and after World War II, then "Portrait of a Town: Cape Charles 1940 - 1960" is a must read!

I prefer to hear the story in my head as opposed to listening to someone creating it for me. I feel such creations are highly limiting. So I went into this audio book with a slight aversion to the whole thing.I was pleasantly surprised with the fact that I enjoyed the book and the audio. The story is fun; the audio is excellent. I am guessing individuals who drive long distances to work or just want to sit and listen in their easy chairs at night will enjoy it. (You can sit in your easy chair during the day too!)So I can, without hesitation, recommend this book with no "aversion" quotient. It won me over!

The story was light and enjoyable and the reading was always entertaining. I would highly recommend this for the lover of light mysteries.

About the Author Edward Morgan Forster (E. M. Forster) was an English novelist, short-story writer and essayist. Born in 1879, Forster is known for his examination of how class difference and hypocrisy in British society during the beginning of the twentieth century influenced personal connections. These themes are best represented in his novels A Room with a View, A Passage to India, and Howard s End. Forster died of a stroke in 1970 at the age of 91.

By Lleu Christopher I have read Howard's End two or three times and listened to it once on tape and it remains one of my favorite novels. Many people were introduced to it by the film, which, good though it was, does not begin to capture the subtle wisdom Forster put into this book. Howard's End can be seen as a quaint period piece about British culture in the early Twentieth Century. On another level, however, it's a brilliant exploration of the human soul. In the Schlegels and the Wilcoxes, Forster has created the perfect embodiment of the eternal conflict between reason and passion. These two families, destined to be united by the marriage of Margaret Schlegel to Henry Wilcox, represent two seemingly irreconcilable aspects of humanity. The Schlegels are artistic, intellectual and impractical; the Wilcoxes materialistic and unapologetically bourgeois. Margaret and Henry have their differences, but it is their relatives who display the more extreme family traits. Margaret's sister Helen is a classic bohemian; Henry's son Charles is a humorless and intolerant banker. As the novel unfolds, the two families are forced to confront each other and decide whether to ultimately part company or compromise. What is most impressive to me about the novel is the naturalness and grace with which the story unfolds. When an author uses characters to embody universal qualities, it is quite a challenge to make the people and story real and not merely symbols. Howard's End succeeds brilliantly as both a thoroughly engaging novel and a rather profound metaphysical inquiry.

Collins I first read Howards End during the final year of my Undergraduate degree, and it quickly became my favourite book (displacing Wuthering Heights). There is something within it that really speaks to some people --- I say 'some,' because I have recommended it to many friends, and their responses have run the gamut from a fascination similar to my own, to outright boredom and frustration with the book. Personally, I felt I connected with Forster's lament regarding the loss of a sense of place and permanence in the modern world.I must disagree with some of the reviewers here, when they say that the issues Forster tackles have little relevance today. I think what attracted me to this book was Forster's examination of those very issues --- most specifically, the quandry that still plagues us today: how can we live an examined, meaningful life in the entropic modern world? I would argue that Howards End is still very relevant.Forster depicts a society in change, but also a society that is a direct relative of our own. He shows the conflicts of modern VS rural, city VS nature, business/sport VS intellect/art, and smug patriarchy VS proto-feminism. If you identified with the second choice in those four sets, then it is likely that you will very much appreciate the social commentary woven into Howards End, and you will find its sermon of "Only Connect!" something of a mission statement --- I certainly did.Really, Howards End almost reads like an allegory. The different families (Schlegel, Wilcox, and Bast) each represent aspects of a society in transition, each one lacking some vital component to make it viable. The Schlegels are intellectual but ineffectual (declining "old money") and are generally feminine, while the aggressive Wilcoxes live in a shallow world of "telegrams and anger" (ascendent business class) and are generally masculine. The Basts are impoverished, kept from achieving their desires for both wealth and intellectual stimulation by their social and economic situation. Finally, there is Ruth Wilcox, who represents a lost patriarchal rural idyll, which Forster seems to both mourn and criticize at the same time.A large portion of the charm and interest I found in Howards End came in watching these three 'sets' of characters bounce off each other, just as the larger groups theya re meant to represent interact within a society. Whether their intentions are good or bad, they usually end up doing each other harm. The results of these complex interactions are certainly interesting to read. By the end of the book, Forster has cleverly found a way "end" the conflict and graft what he sees as worthy about each family into one unit, offering an improbable, almost dream-like solution to the problems presented by the novel.Finally, there is this: when it comes to the actual technical aspects of writing, Forster is a master. Whether or not you agree with his social agenda or his philosophies regarding the examined life, you will have no troubles reading Howards End. The prose is clean, clear, and flowing --- just like a mountain stream.

Wilson The Schlegel sisters are interested in the arts and in the more idealistic liberal social movements of their early 20th century world. The Wilcoxes are practical and materialistic. There seems to be little in common between the two families, but not even a highly embarrassing early amorous encounter can keep them apart. Poor Leonard Bast is as idealistic as the Schlegels, but encumbered by an unloved wife with a shady past, he has not their financial means to avoid dealing with the practicalities of life. Caught between the two factions, he eventually is crushed. Only Margaret Schlegel is finally strong enough to bridge the gap between the practical and the ideal by exerting her benevolent humanity, her passionate and yet controlled determination that people must "connect."HOWARDS END is a minor masterpiece, capturing perfectly the conflict between rigid Victorian values and the more free and open changes in the turbulent years before World War I. Forster handles his characters with great sensitivity and sympathy, yet with a subtle and skillful irony. The novel is not intended for rapid reading, but there is a felicity of expression that is an ample reward for careful perusal. Less fastidious than Henry James, not quite the equal of Trollope in characterization, a more subtle stylist than William Dean Howells, Forster combines some of the best elements of all three of these social chroniclers in an important work that is both highly personal and universal in scope.

About the Author Alan Naldrett divides his time between being a librarian, lecturer and author, having written and co-written three local history books and a Michigan history book as well as a number of history columns. He is a life member of the Chesterfield Historical Society and the New Baltimore Historical Society, and a past vice-chairman of the Macomb County Historical Commission. Naldrett earned a bachelor's degree at Michigan State University and master's degrees in information science and archival science.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not a bad way to spend a few hours of your time By Michigan Reviewer Not a bad book. Not a great book. Somewhere in between the two extremes. Basically a town either disappeared as a result of a big fire, the depletion of the forests surrounding it or the disappearance of rail access. To be honest, I am from western MI, so this book is probably not as relevant to me as it would be if it dealt w my area. Nonetheless it was certainly worth my while to read it and I did enjoy it. You probably will, too, especially if you hail from this part of our state.
