An authoritative and impassioned history of the aftermath of the Six Day War―by a former Israeli soldier―and a cogent argument for an end to the occupation.
In a move that would forever alter the map of the Middle East, Israel captured the West Bank, Golan Heights, Gaza Strip and Sinai Peninsula in 1967's brief but pivotal Six Day War. Cursed Victory is the first complete history of the war's troubled aftermath―a military occupation of the Palestinian territories that is now well into its fifth decade.Drawing on unprecedented access to high-level sources, top-secret memos and never-before-published letters, the book provides a gripping and unvarnished chronicle of how what Israel promised would be an 'enlightened occupation' quickly turned sour, and the anguished diplomatic attempts to bring it to an end. Bregman sheds fresh light on critical moments in the peace process, taking us behind the scenes as decisions about the fate of the territories were made, and more often, as crucial opportunities to resolve the conflict were missed. As the narrative moves from Jerusalem to New York, Oslo to Beirut, and from the late 1960s to the present day, Cursed Victory provides vivid portraits of the key players in this unfolding drama, including Moshe Dayan, King Hussein of Jordan, Bill Clinton, and Yasser Arafat. Yet Bregman always reminds us how diplomatic and back-room negotiations affected the daily lives of millions of Arabs, and how the Palestinian resistance, especially during the first and second intifadas, and now in recent tragic developments, have shaped the political arena. As Bregman concludes, the occupation has become a dark stain on Israel's history. Cursed Victory is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the origins of the ongoing conflict in the region.

Review “Impressive. Cursed Victory fills an important gap in the literature on the occupied territories. A comprehensive, chronological account.” (Pacific Standard)“Ahron Bregman may be one of the most pointedly qualified people on Earth to write a book about the Israeli occupation of Palestine that began in the wake of 1967’s Six Day War. Bregman takes his readers through the entire torturous narrative of the Israeli occupation of the captured territories. It’s clearly the author’s intention to avoid podium-pounding invective in this book, and he succeeds – this is an entirely sober account of an insane and vicious reality.” (Open Letters Monthly)“A plainspoken but urgent account that is deeply critical of Israel's policies.” (Kirkus Reviews)“A former Israeli soldier in Lebanon, Mr Bregman knows his subject first-hand. As an academic at King’s College London, he has accumulated copious documents, many of them secret and unpublished. A detailed and well thought-out book.” (The Economist)“Lucid ... timely ... Bregman has assets which lift this account above many on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. One is access to some hitherto secret material. Cursed Victory is a highly readable study, an excellent starting point for those wanting to know more about how military victory turned into a tragedy.” (The Independent)“It is the best available book on the Israeli occupation of the Territories and why it should be ended ASAP; and one written with the kind of lucidity and insight only somebody who passionately loves his country can muster.” (Martin van Creveld, author of The Transformation of War)“Bregman tells this bleak story well, and what a catalogue of grief it is. A damning verdict.” (Sunday Times (London))“Mr. Bregman knows his subject first-hand. A detailed and well thought-out book.” (The Economist)“Bregman’s deep familiarity with the material and his stylistic clarity will appeal to readers seeking an overview of the Arab-Israeli conflict.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

Excellent, Well-Written, Hard-Hitting Overview By Mara This is an extraordinarily well written, lucid and honest account of the history of the Occupied Territories and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since 1967. Mr. Bregman is a well-respected journalist and academic who has first hand experience serving in the Israeli Defense Forces. I have been listening to the book on Audible (extremely well-read) as well as reading alone. The most concise and incisive overview I have found on the 1967-2007 time period with excellent background and a current follow-up as of 2014.

The book is divided into three parts - first part being 1967 to 1977. Second part being 1977-1987 and rest till 2007. There are lot of maps given to give a context to various time periods. The sources are from various telephone calls as well as top secret memos as per the author. To protect the sources the names are disguised as well as not reveled. This adds an authentic flavor to the book and I am sure gives a real context. The books is great as a historical reference as well as for future, For anyone interested in the Israel's issues and problems it faces this book is a fantastic introduction. For a book of this nature, there will be controversies of course. I am reading from a neutral point of view and the book flows very naturally. The black and white photographs in the book add a unique touch and gives lot of context. I still remember the Camp David meeting with Clinton, Arafat and Ehud Barak. These incidents are described in great detail with with lot of behind the scenes talk and official letters. There are tons of references for anyone interested in more research. Overall this is a great book for any historians library and adds to a stirring conversations among friends.

By lyndonbrecht Reviews of this book are likely to be all over the landscape, perhaps because of the book's take on Israel and the lands occupied after the 1967 war. The writing isn't bad (better in the first portion than the last). The author is credible, the information generally seems sound, and the problem is one that--this is my conclusion, not the book's--cannot be solved, short of a total Israeli withdrawal or expulsion of all Palestinians. Compromise seems impossible. That's the background. One theme of the book is indicated in the title: a huge victory in 1967 has since become the proverbial albatross around Israel's neck.Bregman presents a lot of information about Israeli tactics in the occupied areas (even the use of that mild term is exceedingly controversial). He accumulates information about harassment, systematic surveillance, and he says, torture. preventive incarceration, and making life as miserable as possible for Palestinians. One problem set with authenticating information of this kind is that if true, it invites revenge and if not true, it discredits all such information, true or not. Bergman is certainly passionate. He is Israeli, or at least was (going back after this book might be difficult) and his strong condemnation of Israeli actions perhaps is based on a vision of what he sees versus what he thinks Israel could be.The first half of the book is largely indictment of Israeli policies. The second half more closely resembles a diplomatic history, and both oddly end about 2007, as if the book had been in limbo.
