About the Author Geboren am 7.2.1812 in Landport bei Portsmouth. Als sein Vater 1823 ins Schuldgefängnis in London kam, mußte Dickens bereits in der Jugend als Hilfsarbeiter arbeiten. Nach unregelmäßigem Schulbesuch wurde er 1826 Anwaltsgehilfe und arbeitete als Parlamentsstenograph. Als Reporter beim "Morning Chronicle" begann er seine Skizzen, die in Buchform als "Pickwick Papers" veröffentlicht wurden und ihn berühmt machten. Von 1836 bis 1841 arbeitete er parallel an verschiedenen Romanen. Es folgten Amerikareisen (1841/42) und 1868. Dickens starb am 9.6.1870 im Alter von 58 Jahren an einem Schlaganfall.

Dickens at his most corrosive By Diego Ciego Dickens was one of the most keen observers of human frailties.Everyone is familiar with "A Christmas Carol "and the various personalities and spooks involved.David Copperfield takes cynicism to a new level. The study and portrayal of greed, cunning, stupidity and malice, are balanced by innocence, kindness and foolishness.There are stunningly descriptive passages that help the journey take life in the minds eye.There is tremendous humor.This is a must have for any serious collection of the classics
