About the Author Frances Hodgson Burnett was a born storyteller. Even as a young child, her greatest pleasure was in making up stories and acting them out, using her dolls as characters. She wrote over forty books, including the classic A Little Princess, also illustrated by Tasha Tudor.

23 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Going Beyond A Little Princess By Jacqueline Johnson This is one of Burnett's lesser known novels but highly worth the read. Young Tembarom suddenly comes into a large inheritence and a large estate in Great Britian. His American way of life comes into a sharp contrast and he keeps his chin up the entire time. His love of his life who he met before coming into money refuses to have him unless he stays one year among the posh and still wants her. The deal is he can't see her and must surround himself with beautiful higher class women (with funny results). Old friends are found and new friends made and a ten year old mystery is solved by Tembarom. This is a typical Horatio Alger style book with a woman's touch and far older characters that you usually associate with what we see as a children's author. Very turn of the last century style of writing but highly enjoyable.
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Grown Up Lord Fauntleroy By JustMe A rags to riches story much in the same vein as Burnett's classic "Little Lord Fauntleroy". This time we have a young man, of impeccable moral sense, who has grown up in the streets of New York City and made a decent middle class life for himself - just to the point of earning enough money to where he feels he can ask the girl that he loves to marry him. Then - Bang! - out of the blue comes news that he's inherited the title, and property, of a deceased Lord in England and his life is turned upside down as he crosses the Atlantic to lead his new life - going from earning $30 a week to $30,000 a year. The plot creaks a little under the weight of the traditional conventions of Victorian novels, but the characters are three dimensional, multi-faceted, and interesting. And there are a few unexpected plot twists - just to keep you on your toes. Not for kids; but a welcome addition to anyone's Frances Hodgson Burnett collection.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A neglected classic By Christine H. Buchanan Just a lovely book. The previous reviewer gave a good plot summary. The author lets you guess an important plot point early on (although you are not entirely sure), paving the way for delicious ironies. I especially liked the scenes where Palliser's practiced treachery is no match for Tembarom's shrewdness and decency. Some sentimentality - a character called "Little Ann," for example - but Burnett is skillful enough to keep it from becoming cloying. Highly recommended.
