FLORIDA BACKROADS TRAVEL takes you off the beaten path on day trips to the quieter roads that defined the state in earlier years. Millions of people visit Florida every year and never really see it. Things look pretty much the same from the interstate highways and toll roads. You see the same old billboards, gas stations, chain restaurants and tacky tourist trips all along your heavily traveled route. This book will rescue you from interstate monotony and take you to what is called Old Florida, a part of the fastest growing state that is still a place of serenity, natural wonders and historic places. There are eight geographic regions in Florida and the book is organized by regions. The lengthy table of contents allows you to click on anything that interests you in any of the regions. The book covers historic towns, beaches, state parks and other places of interest. If a town has a good restaurant, the book will mention it along with some favorite lodging choices. Each regional section of the book has maps of recommended day trips with driving routes plainly marked. FLORIDA BACKROADS TRAVEL will show you where the best beaches are. You will also learn about Florida State Parks. These parks are quiet treasures that will make your visit even more interesting. The book doesn’t spend much time on the major tourist attractions like Walt Disney World, Universal Studios and SeaWorld although it gives you enough information to find your way around those places. The towns and country roads are the best attractions, along with some of the lesser known places such as Florida wineries. Many people don’t realize Florida has wineries, but it does. This book will introduce you to wineries where you can see how the wine is made and taste it on the spot. Florida heritage and history is an important part of the state culture so each section of the book has a brief regional history. The book also tells you about Florida festivals, including art shows and musical events, and gives you times and places so you can enjoy them during your visit. You will also find a list of all 1,300 Florida heritage sites divided among the individual regions. The book is written by Mike Miller, a Florida resident since 1960. Mike is a graduate civil engineer from the University of Florida and has traveled all over the state on both business and pleasure. He writes for and publishes his own website, Florida-Backroads-Travel.com. Much of the material from this guide is from the website.

I loved all of the characters...well, okay...most of the characters (I guess it wouldn't be right to love the criminal/s)! I kept trying to figure out who the bad person/people might be, and that kept me gripped to the very end. The lead, Georgia, is someone you can't help but fall in love with. She is the kind of friend you want in your corner...smart, funny, beautiful, and humble. Can't wait for the next book in this series!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Her heroine is at times determined and smart and at times ditzy just like all of us ... By Sue Foster I received this book in return for an honest review. I got this book yesterday afternoon and finished it the same day. That speaks volumes for my opinion of this book. The author has an unusual setting and a quirky sense of humor. Her heroine is at times determined and smart and at times ditzy just like all of us are. The mystery of whether there is a murder or who it is if there were murders keep people guessing. The subplot just adds to the questions. This was the first in the series. I will definitely buy the next one as well as try her other books. My one criticism is that the ending seemed rushed.

I thought it was fun that a reality show was used as the backdrop for the story. The author did a good job of making this book flow. It is a book that you will not want to put down as you are not only wanting to figure out who is doing the murdering but who will Georgia pick for love. In this book we have mystery, romance and humor all things to make a cozy mystery a fun book. I will be reading the next one in this series when it comes out.

Read Online Ebook The Cleansing: A Novel, by George Rabasa

This new twist on the expatriate novel, somewhere between mystery and ethics conundrum, with nods to Graham Greene, Joseph Conrad, and Paul Bowles, is about two very different men and their delayed but fated battle for retribution. Paul is a promising med student from the US wending his way through heady, corrupt and gorgeous Mexico City in the 1980s. Victor is a Mexican lawyer with a web of connections on both sides of the drug business, and Victor is Paul’s would-be cultural as well as underworld guide, who eventually betrays him. What happens when the former friend reappears twenty years later as a cancer patient in the doctor’s pathology lab shows that none of us can escape our secrets.   Flashing between the post-9/11 US and 1980s Mexico, The Cleansing details a love triangle, or diamond, if you will. Adele, a fearless American and photojournalist, attracts both Paul and Victor, and the three become uneasy friends. Mexico City itself is the fourth player in this game, beautiful and decadent, urban and cosmopolitan, torn between policia and narcos, with the division not as clear as the expatriates first think.  The Cleansing is about a reckoning of moral culpability in a corrupt setting. No matter our excuses, the past will come to find us.

The Cleansing: A Novel, by George Rabasa

From Publishers Weekly When Victor Aruna's liver tissue sample shows up under the microscope of San Diego pathologist Dr. Paul Leander, the two men have not seen one another for 20 years. Paul, who met Victor—then a rich young man with an parentally arranged, unearned lawyer's degree—while in medical school in Mexico City, takes it upon himself to inform Victor that Victor has terminal cancer. Upon his hospital discharge, Victor shows up at the home of Paul and his wife, successful art director Adele Zarbo, perhaps to die (and to avoid troubles at home). Paul and Adele met through Victor in Mexico City, and the three had, for a time, formed a charged trio. But as Rabasa (Floating Kingdom) deftly makes clear early on, the friendship is fraught and chock-full of secrets that have been on full simmer for two decades—and that may have a lot to do with Paul and Adele's present state of near-estrangement. With coolness and concision, Rabasa flashes back and forth between Victor's almost taunting visit and the months in Mexico City where the three uneasily gelled, building tension as small revelations pile up and giving vivid snapshots of mid-'80s Mexico City. The denouement is quiet rather than explosive, and it suits the scale of this winningly constrained work. (Aug.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist This story of old passions newly rekindled and old arguments newly rehashed features sharply drawn characters and intelligent, introspective dialogue. Paul, Victor, and Adele met in the early 1980s in Mexico City. Both men were attracted to Adele, a photojournalist, and the trio formed an unusual friendship. Now, two decades later, Paul (who is married to Adele) is a physician, and Victor, diagnosed with cancer, appears at his hospital; all three learn you can bury the past, but you can't kill it. While some readers might find the novel's pace a little slow, others will relish its rich exploration of love, honor, and morality. David PittCopyright © American Library Association. Peterson Rabasa's provocative novel contrasts the well-ordered life of a San Diego area doctor with his untamed days as a medical student in México City. The juxtaposition of violence, poverty, and sweat with the cool, clean, Crate-and-Barrel life is timely and disturbing. Well worth reading!

It was a wonderful and transformative experience and I recommend it highly! The information in Sandy's book makes it possible to enjoy the journey in an informed way. The trails on their on are not well marked but with the use of the GPX tracks provided and the daily walking notes, we never had a problem! There are great suggestions for lodging as well. I can't recommend this Camino or this book enough. Plan this adventure! You won't regret it!

The 28 stages each have distances, topographical information, difficulty, lodging recommendations, and commentary. We have not been to Italy before, and are very excited to see and experience it in this way. This guide will be our trusted companion. Highly recommended.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An indispensable tool for walking the trail... By Bret Thoman Sandy Brown’s new guidebook, The Way of St. Francis, really is exceptional. For any English speaker planning on walking the Way of Francis from Florence to Rome, this book is just as important as a good pair of boots and a nice pack. While there are one or two other books out there on the trail (translated rather poorly from Italian), Sandy’s is much, much better: it is well written; it gives a lot of interesting background information on the towns and cities you’ll walk through; it spells out precise data in terms of daily distances and climbs; there is a lot of info on how to prepare. However, probably most importantly, it will keep you on the trail. While there are (in theory) blue and yellow sign posts to guide you, they are not always reliable. Sandy’s book, however, gives a detailed step-by-step explanation on how to find your way. Plus, he has prepared GPX tracks (which are accessible on the publisher’s website). Taken together -- the Blue/Yellow signposts, Sandy’s book, and the GPX tracks -- it is virtually impossible to get lost. Definitely, the most important purchase you will make if you plan on walking this trail.

In "Heaven Help Us All," novelist Moose Eliot looks at the organized violence we call war through multiple lenses. As the American nation lurches toward the Gulf War during the autumn of 1990, therapist Marjorie Llewellyn labors to help traumatized Vietnam veterans, while struggling with a tragic legacy of PTSD at the heart of her own family. Meanwhile Gary Devers, a refugee from the U.S. Foreign Service, faces the existential dilemma of a thinking man’s response to the persistence of massed, armed confrontation against all reason, while pursuing a radiant vision of personal happiness with Marj. With war looming ever closer, Marj’s mother must deal with the still unhealed wound of the untimely death of Colonel Llewellyn, a Vietnam-era bomber pilot, and the prospect of Marj’s brother Bob’s deployment, as a Marine reservist, to the deserts of Kuwait. Add the backdrop of the nation’s capital, a tribal society of bicycle messengers, and the mysterious disappearance of Charles Pinckney, a model of PTSD recovery whose quirky acts of street theater speak simple truth to power, and you have an extended meditation on the tragedy of war, and on the consequences of its pursuit, insidious and pervasive, that none of us can escape.

Heaven Help Us All, by Moose Eliot

From Kirkus Reviews “This novel, a poignant mediation on the emotional wages of war, captures the suffering felt by veterans and the people who love them. Set in the early 1990s, Eliot’s deftly told novel is haunted by war and geopolitical tumult. The Berlin Wall crumbled, the Cold War recently sped to a sudden conclusion, Nelson Mandela has finally tasted freedom and the U.S. military is poised for a massive invasion of Iraq. Marjorie Llewellyn, a therapist at the Capitol Center for Psychic Wellness in Washington, D.C., spends her life in the thicket of trauma war has produced. She often counsels Vietnam veterans roiled by unpleasant remembrances of combat. She also suffers from the effects war has had and may still have on her life: Her father, a veteran, died prematurely, and it looks increasingly likely her younger brother will be deployed for Desert Shield. Everything changes when she’s assigned a new patient at the clinic, Gary Devers, who frustrates her with his cryptic “intellectualizing of trauma” but also compels her to reflect more profoundly on her own nagging sense of loss. “When Gary was here it began to make sense,” she says. “I could feel that stone of my father glowing warmer when we were together. It was as if there were a stone in him that glowed with a similar warmth, and the two stones were happy when they were together.” The entire narrative is couched within a meta-narrative of the book’s publication: Marjorie’s son, Arturo, sends the 15-year-old manuscript to a literary agent who immediately senses its artistic merit. The prose often strikes a poetic note, highlighting an intelligent treatment of grief…” “A touching, philosophical meditation on the psychological fallout from war.” --Kirkus Reviews

About the Author Moose Eliot is the author of the eco-fiction novel "Tanaki on the Shore" (under the name Bill Smith) and of the novel "Be True to Your Tribe" (not currently available). He is a native of the Washington, DC area, and now lives in the Southern Appalachian mountains.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. To Slay the Minatour By Richard Smith Heaven Help Us AllHeaven Help Us All is a report – written by Marj Llewellyn, a “wounded healer” – to her supervisor at the Capitol Center for Psychic Wellness where Marj counsels Vietnam vets recovering from post-traumatic stress disorder. In her personal life, Marj is haunted by the loss of her father, a “victim” of the Vietnam War. She struggles to sustain her desperate mother who is terrified by the prospects of “another Vietnam”– the Gulf war of 1991 – and who having lost a husband to war, now faces the prospect of losing a son. Marj mediates between her mom and reservist brother whose seemingly “devil may care” attitude hides a concern for the future and exacerbates the heartache of his family. To further complicate her life, Marj struggles to find a satisfying relationship in the face of love gone bad.Into this world comes Gary, a client seeking his way out of a Vietnam War malaise. Gary, a grad school dropout, works as a bicycle courier for a company founded by Charles Pinckney, a recovered PTSD victim and Marj’s “mentor” in the formative days of her work with the veterans. As Marj tries to make sense of the complex and elusive Gary, he confides that Charles has disappeared, then abruptly leaves the session saying that if she wants to see Charles she should be at Farragut Square at ten o’clock Wednesday morning. Against her professional judgement and the direct advice of her boss, Marj is drawn to the park and to the strange event that occurs there – a bizarre poetry-reading memorial for a courier who stepped in front of a bus for unrequited love.Farragut Square becomes a Dantesque gateway (sans inscription) through which Marj enters into a labyrinthine search, not just to find the missing Charles, but for a way to cope with the death of her father, for a means of bringing her mother out of a spiraling depression, for insight that will help her and her clients grapple with the awful effects of war, and for a loving relationship – a foundation on which to establish her wavering life.Moose Elliot weaves an intriguing tale and at each twisting turn of the maze, Marj, Gary, and their fellow seekers catch fleeting glimpses of vague specters disappearing in the distance. Without Ariadine’s thread to guide them, they travel through the obscurity, hoping eventually to find Charles, and in the process to kill the Minotaur – war – and inherit the peace and love promised by the 60's generation, for themselves and for humanity.Remember, this is Marj’s story – she tells it – and the issues she confronts at the start must be resolved – the unsettling way her father died, her mother’s debilitating terror, her brother’s journey into war, the agony induced by the shared stories of the vets, and the freedom of a grounding and intimate relationship. This is also Moose Elliot’s story, told in his inimitable style. The various elements of his multi-level plot are carefully presented in ways that keep you turning pages to see where he will take you next. As he writes, Elliot also pulls aside the curtain to unveil, hidden in dark corners, the way war politics are played out. But Elliot understands that war is a complex affair – not a matter of black and white – and quotes St. Augustine’s words: "love sometimes requires force to protect the innocent."So, underlying Marj’s story, there is a fundamental message about all forms of violence and its profound and prolonged affects on individuals and society. By the end, you may be ready to say with Utah Phillips, “I’m already against the next war.”

Leadership and team building go hand in hand and the end result is Success. I had read the success book but upon realizing that i can get the rest of the two for the price of one, i jumped into the idea. The books are well written and in an easy to understand language. The book is ideal for students and counselors alike. The leadership book for instance contains both basic and advanced Technics that leaders should employ in order to become good leaders. The team building book is also very informative. highly recommended for coaches and HR departments.

I had read the team-building book. but the leadership and success books are powerful companions to round out your personal growth and set yourself up for the best possible experience as a leader.I love the strategies that are listed in the success book. They are all highly practical and I am applying several to my life. The tips on organizing your life are worth the cost of the book!I love having all three books easily accessible at my fingertips in this handy combo pack. Thanks, Ace, for another great set of books.

Success. 3 in 1” by Ace McCloud is a complete set for all good managers and aspiring team leaders.“Leadership”– “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader” – that is the best recommendation for the wonderful guide how to become successful leaders. McCloud advises that you should start your day with compliments for your team instead of criticize too much. Constructive criticism is also very important but you should know how to do it properly. “Leaderships” definitely helps you to communicate with your team. Firstly, you should ask them is your instruction is clear and understanding, in what part of the project they are struggling and how we as a team can improve it. Secondly, you should know how to use strengths of your team and how to motivate and appreciate efforts. Very good way that I love the best is to share a success together and fight negativity with positivity.“Team building” presents how to be a good team leader. You have to interview and recruit good people, how to negotiate, problems’ solving and help people in their personal development. McCloud highlights that crucial is building your team from most enthusiastic people. Also presents lots of activities and challenges help you to motivate and inspired your team. Nice exercise is to tell your college good things about him. Writing personal mission statement and read them out loud. Funny is also stick your statements on the wall above others statements as high as you can, when you can use chair or others tools.“Success” contains very valuable advice how to start small and dream big, to achieve it you have to set clear goals and stop complaining, just work hard step by step as you complete your tasks successfully. I like the best strategies how to be yourself, be positive and optimistic and learn to handle rejection. Rejection can be devastated for your motivation and “Success” helps you to manage with distress linked with rejection. The next valuable thing is to resist fear that holding you back. To reduce fear you should lead an open dialog with others and building trust.

The Byzantine Empire; a state which can said to have been in continuous existence from 324 A.D. to 1453 A.D. During this time, its fortunes have waxed and waned; it has celebrated great triumphs and suffered the basest defeats, defeated the strongest powers of the time and been overrun mere years later. To the historian, a subject of intense interest then, a history of which could only be brought together in the most illustrious of ways, through strenuous research and meticulous compilation. The first Volume of A.A. Vasiliev?s ?History of the Byzantine Empire? has been achieved thus. This History was originally published in Russia, and accordingly in Russian. It was first released in 1917, without the footnotes that make it such a complete study in the revised version. Vasiliev continued to update and revise his history, publishing versions in French, Spanish, Turkish and English, until the revised issue being now reviewed was released in 1952. Since then, the history has not been changed, except (according to the publisher of the book) for the correction of typographical errors. Spanning the history of the Byzantine Empire from 324 A.D. to the beginnings of the Empire?s period of decline after the Battle of Manzikert and the rise of the Comneneid Dynasty, this first volume painstakingly and efficiently accounts for the many events of the Byzantine history; from religious issues to biographies of Emperors, from political and social developments to literature, learning, education and arts. The book is begun with an actual introduction by Mr Vasiliev himself, accounting for the evolution of his history. The history begins with the study of Byzantium, eruditely summarizing the study of Byzantium in Western scholarship. It continues to include the study of the Byzantines in Russia in the modern day. Russia indeed can be said to have gained much of its culture from the Byzantines, which makes it rather appropriate that Russian study accounts should be included. Vasiliev goes on to comprise many other sources which he himself has referred to or that he recommends to those interested in the history of Byzantium should research. The history itself begins with Constantine and Christianity; going to include the changes of religion in the Byzantine Empire and the beginning troubles with the Church and Papacy in Rome. His and Diocletian?s reforms are succinctly recorded, and an extremely detailed line of Emperors and the Byzantine society up until the sixth century follow. The amazing depth of knowledge can already be grasped at its overwhelming size, and these are only the first two comprehensive chapters! The first Volume continues to deeply consider the amazing history of this longevous Empire; through the time of Justin and his amazing successor, Justinian I and their immediate successors, to the ?Heraclian Epoch?, the ?Iconoclastic Epoch? and the ?Macedonian Epoch?, all of which are separate chapters, deeply detailed, referenced and analysed. Footnotes adorn each page, providing a further wealth of detail. Throughout the volume, the political, social and religious developments are considered, the notable Emperors discussed and the literature and arts canvassed, providing a magnificently comprehensive picture of the Byzantine era. A light read it is not; it takes dedication and resolve to continue to read; but once the reader has immersed him or herself in this rich history, they will never wish to stop, and as a book for references or random information on the Byzantines, it has few equals. Vasiliev has created a volume that is virtually impossible to surpass for sheer detail and interest. For those who have an interest in the Byzantine history, this book should be a bible, as I myself have read few books that could equal this one in the provision of information. Truly, a masterpiece of in-depth history and culture; to be read and admired by all whose interest leads them down the path of the amazing Byzantines.

It did a great job of helping to highlight what key things to try and see and what food/drink places that were a cut above as well. It's small size made it perfect to carry around in my laptop bag without being bulky or in the way unlike some other tour guides that I have. The break down by neighborhood was really nice as well. I found this to be a great value for the cost, and I look forward to using it on my next trip there whenever that might be.

Super helpful, convenient size By G M We were just traveling in Tokyo for a few days before heading elsewhere in Japan, so this book was the perfect size for tips and guidance on our trip. It's much nicer carrying a book of this size rather than a heavy tour book. Even though it's short, it covers a lot of sections of Tokyo with short descriptions on what to see. Very helpful.

Ebook PDF Online Cursed Victory: A History of Israel and the Occupied Territories, 1967 to the Present, by Ahron Bregman

An authoritative and impassioned history of the aftermath of the Six Day War―by a former Israeli soldier―and a cogent argument for an end to the occupation.

In a move that would forever alter the map of the Middle East, Israel captured the West Bank, Golan Heights, Gaza Strip and Sinai Peninsula in 1967's brief but pivotal Six Day War. Cursed Victory is the first complete history of the war's troubled aftermath―a military occupation of the Palestinian territories that is now well into its fifth decade.

Drawing on unprecedented access to high-level sources, top-secret memos and never-before-published letters, the book provides a gripping and unvarnished chronicle of how what Israel promised would be an 'enlightened occupation' quickly turned sour, and the anguished diplomatic attempts to bring it to an end. Bregman sheds fresh light on critical moments in the peace process, taking us behind the scenes as decisions about the fate of the territories were made, and more often, as crucial opportunities to resolve the conflict were missed. As the narrative moves from Jerusalem to New York, Oslo to Beirut, and from the late 1960s to the present day, Cursed Victory provides vivid portraits of the key players in this unfolding drama, including Moshe Dayan, King Hussein of Jordan, Bill Clinton, and Yasser Arafat. Yet Bregman always reminds us how diplomatic and back-room negotiations affected the daily lives of millions of Arabs, and how the Palestinian resistance, especially during the first and second intifadas, and now in recent tragic developments, have shaped the political arena. As Bregman concludes, the occupation has become a dark stain on Israel's history. Cursed Victory is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the origins of the ongoing conflict in the region.

Cursed Victory: A History of Israel and the Occupied Territories, 1967 to the Present, by Ahron Bregman

Review “Impressive. Cursed Victory fills an important gap in the literature on the occupied territories. A comprehensive, chronological account.” (Pacific Standard)“Ahron Bregman may be one of the most pointedly qualified people on Earth to write a book about the Israeli occupation of Palestine that began in the wake of 1967’s Six Day War. Bregman takes his readers through the entire torturous narrative of the Israeli occupation of the captured territories. It’s clearly the author’s intention to avoid podium-pounding invective in this book, and he succeeds – this is an entirely sober account of an insane and vicious reality.” (Open Letters Monthly)“A plainspoken but urgent account that is deeply critical of Israel's policies.” (Kirkus Reviews)“A former Israeli soldier in Lebanon, Mr Bregman knows his subject first-hand. As an academic at King’s College London, he has accumulated copious documents, many of them secret and unpublished. A detailed and well thought-out book.” (The Economist)“Lucid ... timely ... Bregman has assets which lift this account above many on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. One is access to some hitherto secret material. Cursed Victory is a highly readable study, an excellent starting point for those wanting to know more about how military victory turned into a tragedy.” (The Independent)“It is the best available book on the Israeli occupation of the Territories and why it should be ended ASAP; and one written with the kind of lucidity and insight only somebody who passionately loves his country can muster.” (Martin van Creveld, author of The Transformation of War)“Bregman tells this bleak story well, and what a catalogue of grief it is. A damning verdict.” (Sunday Times (London))“Mr. Bregman knows his subject first-hand. A detailed and well thought-out book.” (The Economist)“Bregman’s deep familiarity with the material and his stylistic clarity will appeal to readers seeking an overview of the Arab-Israeli conflict.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

About the Author Born in Israel in 1958, Ahron Bregman was a soldier in the 1982 Lebanon War and reached the rank of captain. He then studied in Jerusalem and London, completing a doctorate in War Studies at King's College London. He is the author of Israel's Wars: A History Since 1947 and A History of Israel. An academic and journalist, Bregman teaches at the Department of War Studies, King's College London.

Excellent, Well-Written, Hard-Hitting Overview By Mara This is an extraordinarily well written, lucid and honest account of the history of the Occupied Territories and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since 1967. Mr. Bregman is a well-respected journalist and academic who has first hand experience serving in the Israeli Defense Forces. I have been listening to the book on Audible (extremely well-read) as well as reading alone. The most concise and incisive overview I have found on the 1967-2007 time period with excellent background and a current follow-up as of 2014.

The book is divided into three parts - first part being 1967 to 1977. Second part being 1977-1987 and rest till 2007. There are lot of maps given to give a context to various time periods. The sources are from various telephone calls as well as top secret memos as per the author. To protect the sources the names are disguised as well as not reveled. This adds an authentic flavor to the book and I am sure gives a real context. The books is great as a historical reference as well as for future, For anyone interested in the Israel's issues and problems it faces this book is a fantastic introduction. For a book of this nature, there will be controversies of course. I am reading from a neutral point of view and the book flows very naturally. The black and white photographs in the book add a unique touch and gives lot of context. I still remember the Camp David meeting with Clinton, Arafat and Ehud Barak. These incidents are described in great detail with with lot of behind the scenes talk and official letters. There are tons of references for anyone interested in more research. Overall this is a great book for any historians library and adds to a stirring conversations among friends.

By lyndonbrecht Reviews of this book are likely to be all over the landscape, perhaps because of the book's take on Israel and the lands occupied after the 1967 war. The writing isn't bad (better in the first portion than the last). The author is credible, the information generally seems sound, and the problem is one that--this is my conclusion, not the book's--cannot be solved, short of a total Israeli withdrawal or expulsion of all Palestinians. Compromise seems impossible. That's the background. One theme of the book is indicated in the title: a huge victory in 1967 has since become the proverbial albatross around Israel's neck.Bregman presents a lot of information about Israeli tactics in the occupied areas (even the use of that mild term is exceedingly controversial). He accumulates information about harassment, systematic surveillance, and he says, torture. preventive incarceration, and making life as miserable as possible for Palestinians. One problem set with authenticating information of this kind is that if true, it invites revenge and if not true, it discredits all such information, true or not. Bergman is certainly passionate. He is Israeli, or at least was (going back after this book might be difficult) and his strong condemnation of Israeli actions perhaps is based on a vision of what he sees versus what he thinks Israel could be.The first half of the book is largely indictment of Israeli policies. The second half more closely resembles a diplomatic history, and both oddly end about 2007, as if the book had been in limbo.

I have come to respect his writing and opinion. Armored Champion may be his best yet. It is a superb book for beginners since it addresses so many of the considerations needed when discussing tank vs tank combat. Firepower, protection, mobility, reliability, cost. This is not new, but how this information is presented is top notch as are the printing, paper and illustrations.Zaloga breaks it down by nation and by time period. He further breaks down analysis by what a tank crew would choose (expensive tank, world beaters) vs what a battlefield commander might choose vs what a nation would choose. Sometimes, those decisions are different and Zaloga outlines why. He supports his decisions with excellent tables, charts, clear B&W photographs and narrative. His choices are sometimes controversial, something he welcomes to promote discussion and differing views. The bibliography and appendix are detailed, helpful and come from many sources, foreign and domestic. For the more experienced reader, there are still many insights, details and facts to be gathered, the summaries of each nations tank development alone make this a worthwhile purchase. This is not a color photo walk around, it is a highly informative treatise on tank developmentThe reader's digest view of this book – buy it, it's an excellent collection to the library.

It offers a far more nuanced view of armored warfare then many comparable works on WWII tanks. Zaloga has his usual excellent research and mixes it with informed opinion as well. Perhaps the best parts of the book are various tables and descriptions of studies that I’ve never seen published before, either online or in print. These are sure to provoke spirited debate and discussion. For example, an extensive study by the Russians ultimately rated a Panther Tank as 2.37, with a T-34-85 1.32 with a late model Panzer III rated as the baseline of 1 (Higher is “better”, in this case). Or did you know that a British study gave the Panzer IV a rating of 1.0 rated a 75mm Sherman as a 1.1 (In this case, that means 1.1 75mm Sherman’s to match 1 Panzer IV.), a Cromwell a 1.35 and a 17pdr Sherman a .9 at 1000 yards? Fascinating stuff. He also adds some new wrinkles to some old debates. For example, he examines the mechanical availability for major types of tanks, but critically he points out that this is not static, the most reliable tank during one part of the war, may not show up so well later on (Although it usually still holds some advantage). For example, the superiority, reliability wise, of the Stug III over all three primary German tanks, (PzIV, Panther and Tiger I) in 1943 is so great that the question is not what tank the German’s should have been making, but why bother making anything other than Stug’s at all. The comparison in 1944 is much closer. Its also noteworthy that the abysmal early reliability of the Panther, while very bad, is at least at times not dramatically worse then the Tiger I (For example PzIV availability in late 1943 was 48%, Panther was 37%, Tiger I was 36%. Yes, that is bad, but they are all pretty bad, which surprised me.)Which leads to a few complaints. I would appreciate some better context for some of this data. For example, He mentions a British study regarding the IS-2, T-34-85 and Comet. Zaloga cites his source, (Assessment of Forms of Anti-Tank Defense, Effectiveness of British and Russian Tanks. AORG Report No. 11/51 August 1951.) The study concludes the IS-2 is slightly better then the Comet, which is slightly better the the T-34-85, not exactly controversial, but there are no details how its conclusions were derived. I’m confident the actual study is likely as interesting to read as a primer on federal tax law, but part of the reason I enjoy Zaloga’ s writing is that he does give informed opinion. In this case, since the Comet and IS-2 never faced each other, presumably this assessment would come from an analysis of mobility, firepower, protection, accuracy, effectiveness of the fighting compartment etc. Did it include crew survivability? Mechanical reliability and durability? Were they assessing an actual IS-2 Tank etc.? I don’t know, and I would have liked to hear more what he thought about the subject. Since this comparison is similar to what he is doing in this book, it would have been good to get his assessments on the conclusions made.Likewise, very useful tables are included throughout the book. Readers should be aware that these tables need to be read with the accompanying text. For example when discussing 3rd Army US losses during the Lorraine battles of Sept 1944, at location 3422 of the kindle edition, a table summarizes total US AFV losses as 148, but it only includes tanks, not the M10 and M18 GMC’s. However the accompanying text mentions that total losses for September were 200, including TDs. It also important to look carefully, some of the tables have some formatting issues. For example, a table detailing total German AFV losses in Lorraine for Sept 1944 lists a total of 341 total losses. It also lists US claims, but the formatting is off, it shows US claims as 186 under Panther, 421 under PzKpfw III and 607 under PzKpfw IV, with no claims at all for assault guns/JagPz etc. Obviously the 607 is the total number of claims (186+421), the 186 and 421 might represent claims for Tanks vs Assault guns, or for that matter claims by US tank crews vs US tank destroyers etc., or destroyed vs damaged, but it’s not clear. As the other reviewers have noted, some of the tables are a bit sloppy.I need to mention that Zaloga thankfully makes it clear when he is dealing with claims versus actual losses, a very helpful detail that is pretty much a prerequisite for any honest assessment of WWII combat vehicles.Other parts of the book appear rushed. For example the Stug is given a decent amount of coverage, as well as the way it was integrated into the German army, but there is barely a mention of US tank destroyers, which made anywhere from 10% to 20% of US armor strength. And finally there is really no conclusion, Zaloga reviews the tanks for each period from 1941-1945, but really does not have a concluding chapter where he reviews all the information presented and offers his overall assessment. I understand that a major point of the book is that there was no single best tank of the war, but I’m looking for more of a review of all the information supplied. Again, part of the value of a author like Zaloga is that his opinion is valuable, and I would have like to have heard more of it.Now that I'm reviewing what I've said, this sounds unduly harsh. Basically the only real issue with the book is that parts of it seemed rushed, the conclusion is really abbreviated, and some of the tables and formatting are sloppy. Critically, this is not a ~$10-15 Osprey book, at the list price of ~$30 I tend to expect a little more of these details to be ironed out. But ultimately I’d say this book, while required reading for AFV fans, is not as good as the superlative Armored Thunderbolt. I gave Thunderbolt 5 stars, so this gets 4.

Isby The concept of identifying the best couple of tanks for each year and campaign of the Second World War, in the author’s capable hands, goes beyond the usual tank-buff arguments and wargamers’ focusing on the importance of those numbers to which they happen to have access. By setting out what are the criteria for combat success in the rapidly changing operational environment that marked the Second World War, the book is an excellent description of what makes a tank effective or a failure, always considered with its larger context in mind.Solidly researched, the book draws on a broad array of archival and published sources, so much so that it is a valuable first stop for anyone interested in the subject. One hopes the author goes on to do similar overviews – not limited to 1939-45 – first, of the development of tank fire control and armament and, second, of tank battle tactics that can similarly draw on his deep knowledge of the subject.
