As a professional travel writer and editor for the past 40 years, Don George has been paid to explore the world. Through the decades, his articles have been published in magazines, newspapers, and websites around the globe and have won more awards than almost any other travel writer alive, yet his pieces have never been collected into one volume. The Way of Wanderlust: The Best Travel Writing of Don George fills this void with a moving and inspiring collection of tales and reflections from one of America’s most acclaimed and beloved travel writers. From his high-spirited account of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro on a whim when he was 22 years old to his heart-plucking description of a home-stay in a muddy compound in Cambodia as a 61-year-old, this collection ranges widely. As renowned for his insightful observations as for his poetic prose, George always absorbs the essence of the places he’s visiting.Other stories here include a moving encounter with Australia’s sacred red rock monolith, Uluru; an immersion in country kindness on the Japanese island of Shikoku; the trials and triumphs of ascending Yosemite’s Half Dome with his wife and children; and a magical morning at Machu Picchu.

A Must-Read for all travelers and story-lovers alike By Amazon Customer The Way of Wanderlust is a Must-Read for all travelers and story-lovers alike. The way that Don is able to capture the sights, sounds, and people on his adventures is mesmerizing and unparalleled. Never did you know that you could feel the cool ocean spray of Galapagos waters - or see the sheer beauty of sunrise on the top of Mt Kilimanjaro - from your couch until reading Don's words. It is in many ways a memoir of one of the most influential travel writers of our time - but told through short stories that Don wrote in real time in each stage of his life. With a short introduction to every tale, Don reflects on what the following story meant to him during that time in his life, and how it has shaped him today. With that there is an incredible connective thread that weaves together a narrative that spans decades of time and thousands of miles around the globe. Most importantly - read this book to relight your faith in human connection. If Don's life as a travel writer teaches us anything - it is that human kindness knows no bounds and can be found in every corner of the earth. That alone is worth reading this book - and then dusting off your passport and starting your own adventure.Cheers! And thank you Don for this wonderful wanderlust gift!

This book is a must-have for every traveler, every writer, every storyteller, every bibliophile and should be on everybody's bookshelf. My favorite story so far is "Piecing Together Puzzles in Cambodia" as I'm making my way through this book slowly so as to savor each and every story. It's such an extraordinary collection of Don's exceptional and awe-inspiring travels from around the world. His love for mankind and the human spirit really shines through in each and every story. Travel with Don George on these Pilgrimages, see the world through his wise and kind eyes, delight in the goodness of the human spirit during his Encounters and share in his Illuminations and epiphanies.Note: This book will not cure you of your wanderlust.
