The hours were composed mostly of dull or rebellious moments during the period of Theodora's engagement to Mr. Brown. From the very first she had thought it hard that she should have had to take this situation, instead of Sarah or Clementine, her elder step-sisters, so much nearer his age than herself. To do them justice, either of these ladies would have been glad to relieve her of the obligation to become Mrs. Brown, but Mr. Brown thought otherwise.

Beautiful, angelic, upper-class Theodora marries a wealthy tradesman for his money. This sacrifice enables her improvident father, Captain Fitzgerald, and her unattractive step-sisters to obtain a comfortable lifestyle. The tradesman, Josiah Brown, gains a beautiful young wife and possible entree to Society. Possible, but only if her class conscious relatives chose to recognize Theodora and her ex-shopkeeper husband. Josiah is a kind, indulgent husband. Unfortunately, he is also underbred and prone to illhealth. Due to her father's courtship of possible wife number three; a wealthy American widow named Jane McBride, Theodora meets handsome roue, Lord Bracondale. Hector, Baron Bracondale, is entranced by Theodora. Married women are fair game in his philosophy and before long he is amusing himself with a subtle pursuit. But Hector is caught in his own trap. He falls in love, but cannot convince Theodora to break her vows and escape to Italy with him. Hector believes that Josiah will eventually divorce Theodora and Hector can live happily ever after with the woman he loves. Theodora loves Hector but will not hurt Josiah. She does not love Josiah but she does recognise all that he has done for her and her family. Theodora writes a heartfelt good-bye to Hector. Will Hector and Theodora ever have a life together? What made this simple romance interesting was the author's assumption that the aristocracy were genetically superior to all other classes. That the members of the nobility were more sensitive, loved more deeply, and were capable of greater personal sacrifice and self-restraint than the common classes. However, as written, the characters of Captain Fitzgerald, Sir Patrick Fitzgerald and Baron Bracondale are strong examples of the corruption, entitlement and dishonourableness of the Aristocratic Class. When all is said and done it is middle-class Josiah Brown who reveals the beauty and generousity of soul that prevents an ugly scandal. Lots of snobbery and an interesting look at turn of the 2Oth Century English Society.
