He was raised in a culture of respect and responsibility—taught to go to college, get a good job, and then provide for a family of his own. But for Dennis V. Neely, the struggle to reach nursing school graduation was only the beginning.

He had a debt to repay, redeemable only through active service with the United States Army. And when the call of duty brought him from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC, to the harrowing conditions of the Vietnam War, it set the stage for one of the most difficult periods of Neely’s life.

In A Reluctant Servant, the Army veteran shares the experiences that have stuck with him for more than four decades—from his traumatic first loss in the medical arena to the devastating attack that nearly destroyed his field hospital for good.

Highlighting the contrast between the trusting innocence of his youth and the violent perils of war, this deeply personal memoir acts as both a therapeutic outlet and an unforgettable voice. Neely shares authentic memories and experiences from one of the most tumultuous eras in American history—providing a front-row view of the most unimaginable consequences of its violence and cruelty.

A unique perspective on the Vietnam war from someone in the medical field. It made me laugh and cry and is extremely thought provoking. Includes evocative stories on people who's lives had been changed forever during this treacherous war.

By mary shoen Having worked in the health care field for more than 35 years, I was very interested to find out how they had to work during that terrible war. It must have been so depressing to try your best to save lives but then lose them because of a lack of supplies , simple cleanliness, the weather, the terrain... oh, and weapon fire.. simply unimaginable . The long hours, the threat of danger everywhere that continued without relief, the never ending stream of horribly injured soldiers, how could anyone return from that without nightmares, wishes that you could have done more, even though it was impossible. But for the injured, how comforting to have someone like Dennis,( or Carol) there, calm in the chaos, to look you in the eye and help you feel safe, stop your pain, and bandage your wounds. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would like more Dennis.

By Michael Mead I have known Dennis and Carole since they came to their home on the Platte River. Being in the medical field also it gave me a new insight into a war where I lost a classmate and several young men from my home area in the U.P. There were many emotions that visited me while reading The Reluctant Servant, and I had a difficult time putting it down once I started it. I just want to say Thank you Dennis for sharing part of your life with any who read this book and a huge thank you to you and Carole for serving in this war, regardless of how people felt about it.......it was a war fought by America ......So thankful you shared with us!. Oh yes, and I can see Dick sliding down that hill! LOL
