From the New York Times best-selling author of the Bibliophile Mysteries and A High-End Finish comes the second Fixer-Upper Mystery...

Contractor and part-time sleuth Shannon Hammer specializes in improving the quirks and flaws of the Victorian homes in Lighthouse Cove, California. The quirks and flaws of their residents are another story... Valentine's Day is approaching, and while Shannon is delighted to be friends with not one but two handsome men, not everyone in town is feeling the love. After her elderly neighbor Jesse Hennessey fails to make his daily appearance at the local diner, Shannon swings by his place to check on him. Not only does she find Jesse dead - of an apparent heart attack - but she also realizes that his home has been ransacked.

Someone suggests that a thief was searching for a priceless necklace Jesse claimed to have retrieved from a capsized sailing ship, but Shannon doesn't believe it. Everyone knows Jesse had a penchant for constructing tall tales - like the one about him having a hot new girlfriend. But his death is soon ruled a homicide, and shady suspects begin popping out of the woodwork. When another victim turns up dead, Shannon is convinced she must find the killer before someone else gets nailed...

I read A High-End Finish, the first book in the series, and loved it; so I was thrilled to get the chance to read this one before its official release. I was not disappointed. I love the location of the series, Lighthouse Cove, CA. Shannon is a great character and is well-developed. It's so easy to picture her and all the rest of the regulars. Her career as a the owner of a construction company is unique to cozy mysteries, but she comes off as strong and feminine. I began to suspect who the killer was before the final chapters, but the development of that person's plans and actions leading up to it was so well done that I had to keep reading to discover all that went before the murder. It was hard to put this book down until I got to the end.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Love This Series By Nancy Malven This is a wonderful series. This is the second book in the series and I recommend you read the first book, High-End Finish before you read this book so you will have background information, although you could read this as a stand alone. It is well written, well edited, and the main characters are not idiots. The heroine actually will work with the police and is not really inclined to go off on her own (too much). Good characters, good story and dogs and cats. Love it.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Awesome Mystery By Lori Caswell/Dollycas Dollycas’s ThoughtsKate Carlisle has constructed another awesome mystery in the second installment of the Fixer Upper Mysteries.Shannon Hammer is a very strong protagonist with job that keeps her on her toes managing several different construction work sites all at the same time. The life of a General Contractor means a lot of time traveling between sites, a heck of a lot of paperwork and a slew of phone calls but Shannon also has her own set of pink tools and she is not afraid to use them. Mystery writer, Mac, has moved into one of the suites above Shannon’s garage and they are becoming a little more than chummy. Police Chief, Eric, is getting to know Shannon better too and doesn’t accuse of murder this time, but he does try to tell her to keep her nose out of his investigation. This is a cozy mystery so you know that is not going to happen. Neighbor Jesse must have been quite a character with his tall and not so tall tales. Jesse was her best friend’s Uncle and she had known him much of her life and he has a special place in her heart and that just drives her to find out who killed him and why.The author does any excellent job of storytelling. She drops a clue here and a clue there, hammers in a twist or two or three, and an extra little ghostly element along the way too, all to keep the reader guessing and fitting things together to solve the mystery right along with Shannon. We also get vivid descriptions of the house being renovated and having worked in home construction and remodels I love those parts.I guess it would be fair to say Kate Carlisle has nailed this story right on the head. I am looking forward to see what she has planned for the next Shannon Hammer project. I am sure she is already checking over the blueprints and getting the permits to bring us another wonderful mystery.a perfect escape

The story behind one team’s unprecedented dominance at the quarterback position   By developing a trio of Hall of Fame-bound passers, the Green Bay Packers have enjoyed success at the quarterback position that surpasses that of any other team in the National Football League. In Leaders of the Pack, veteran Packers writer Rob Reischel explores the organization's history of successful signal-callers, highlighting Bart Starr's Super Bowl victories, Brett Favre's collection of NFL records, and Aaron Rodgers' ascent into becoming one of the best players in today's NFL. Reischel traces the history of all three players, highlighting what it means to be a Packers quarterback both on and off the field, and then expands his insight to the rest of the league. He examines other team's dynamic trios—such as the Dallas Cowboys' Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman, and Tony Romo or the San Francisco 49ers' Y. A. Tittle, Joe Montana, and Steve Young—but demonstrates why the Packers have the most successful players at the position in NFL history. Featuring Favre's thoughts about his place in the Packers' quarterback legacy in his own words, Leaders of the Pack is required reading for Packers fans young and old.

John Martin had nowhere left to go. His music career was in the toilet and his trouble with drink had caused him trouble with the law. With nothing in the world but his van and guitar he headed back to his hometown in West Virginia. John hoped to find a place where he could get himself sorted out, but the town and family he left behind more than a decade before were in pretty bad shape, too. And there was no one left to hold it together but John. The Fourteenth Colony is a novel that explores possibility, failure and the hope for redemption. It’s a novel that asks can old hurt be soothed, can old wrongs be righted, and can we forgive and start again? 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Todd Burge Review of The Fourteenth Colony (A Novel with Music by Jason T. Lewis) By Todd Burge I just finished reading The Fourteenth Colony by Jason T. Lewis. The book comes with an eight song companion CD/download.Lewis was a well known regular in the Morgantown WV music scene back in the early 90s. He later moved to New York City to pursue his music, started an Americana rock band there called Star City, worked with the late Jay Bennett (Wilco) and for the last couple years has been Director of the Writing and Humanities Program at the University of Iowa.My first memories of Jason Lewis are that of a musician and journalist. If I remember right, he was a music writer for The Daily Athenaeum, the WVU student newspaper. He interviewed me 20 years ago when my cassette "New World Out of Order" came out.To be from West Virginia is to be an artist. You must be creative to stay, but you must be creative to leave and stay away. Staying away is the real trick. Some find it impossible. Others live their lives tortured by it. Pining away for the Great State or the selective memories of what they thought was great before they left. In West Virginia there's art in the way people speak, in the food, the land, the slice of a buck's belly, the pain and the heaven that is there or almost there, daily.I spent my twenties trying to get out of West Virginia and I spent my thirties trying to get back. The Fourteenth Colony is a fictional work about trying to "get back" home and slipping as you try. It is about trying to mend your broken past somehow. It is about a musician from a broken family, a broken state and heart stepped on by a mother and a father who didn't know how to be a mother and father. A musician who moved to New York and was signed to a major label, but then the bottom fell out and left him with nothing but some master tapes that he had no legal right to release.I know that some of this work of fiction is fact and follows Lewis' actual life, but I'm somewhat afraid to ask him which is which as it all seems so painful. The story is a compelling one for me as I too come from a broken home and am a musician who moved away to search for my musical "legacy". My reasons and motivation to start playing rock and roll were not sexually motivated as is the case with most young men, but possibly a reaching out to my family. An attempt to prove something to them. If Dad had hugged me once or twice as a baby, maybe I would have been an accountant.I feel this to be the case with the main character in Lewis' book, John Martin. I can't shake the name. Or maybe the name shakes me in an interesting way. John Martin. John=John and Martin=fine guitar. Crapper Guitar. Crap Guitar. Music in the crapper. Ha.At any rate, The Fourteenth Colony is a book of struggle that is more than worthy of a read from anyone, but especially those who grew up in West Virginia then moved away. Maybe it is best to never go back, but sometimes going back is the only option.John Martin finds himself going back to the same haunts, losing sobriety and his mind or possibly finding his mind as he gets lost. He seems to be connecting himself with those people who most remind him of his past. A stripper who reminds him of his mother who has a teenage son comes to mind. The stripper talks about how she had her son a bit too early in life and one of my favorite lines of the book falls here. She talks about how her boy will take off without letting her know where he is, just long enough to make it hurt. "He knows how to make time painful", she said.John Martin sees his teen years in that boy and his mother in the stripper. He desperately attempts to mend his past by connecting with both of them. The spark of the book is in this ongoing friction.John Martin's dying father's request for a deer steak for his possible last meal turns into a wonderful metaphoric trip through the familiar West Virginia hills of my boyhood. I can almost smell the words. As John Martin reluctantly hunts the deer down he is thinking, "It wasn't in me, but I had to try. I stood and walked further up the hill, past the place where I'd been the day before, toward the clearing above. It was an unknown place. Maybe unknown things could happen there."Unknown things do happen there.Throughout the story, Martin refers to the master tapes that are in his van, the major label release that fell through. In most books you would simply imagine the music, but Lewis has included a CD/download of some of the songs mentioned on the master as well as others that touch on the book's theme. The book gets so desperately dark at times that I expected the songs to venture into Lou Reed's territory, lyrically I mean, but they don't. They are straight forward Americana rock songs with a well rehearsed band. No hillbilly twang here. They are aching Americana Rock tunes. They sound like songs from a man who may have spent his twenties running away from his West Virginia roots only to realize that there was nowhere to run. They most certainly sound like songs that could have been on John Martin's never to be released CD. The book stands strong on its own, but it is really great/unique having this musical companion. As a songwriter, this work was inspirational to me. It is an exciting and admirable achievement by Lewis.Read it.Todd Burge Jan 11th 2012Visit Todd Burge's Blog for Songwriters[...][...]

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A believable portrait and insightful debut novel By Kim MacQueen John Martin pops unexpectedly into the 14th colony, nosing around his old home and checking in on his old haunts, looking up his parents and old friends but not ever really knowing why he's there. He drives all over town in a beat-up van, past establishments that didn't look like much even in the good old days, drinking too much and buying groceries on credit, dispassionately describing every corner of the place down to the smells. The images in this novel are really clean and sparse, but at the same time extremely vivid and telling. And funny - John describes his father, hooked up to machines in the hospital, as a huge power strip, and calls the trucks laden with kills on the first day of hunting season "Deer Armageddon." His insight into a stripper friend's private life with her son is spot-on, insightful and believable, and the dialogue is crisp and realistic. It's good that the reader is rooted in place, because the story floats back and forth in time, with only a hair's distance between what John is seeing happen in the present and what he's dredging up from the past. Most of that is uncomfortable, and he deals with it as he can, but he only lets the hardest questions hang in the air for moments before he's on to something more palatable. For instance, John traces his reverence for music and singing back to childhood, but still can't look at it closely enough to answer why he hasn't really played for two years, even though everybody asks.Lewis resists turning unavoidably emotional scenes into Hallmark moments, subtly showing (or not) how they affect his characters. In the end, the reader knows John has come a long way driving around his old home, even though he's still not exactly sure how, why, or where he's going from here.

By WVFarmGirl The Fourteenth Colony is NOT a feel good, happy ending, all loose ends tied up type of book, it is far too real for that. What is IS, a smart, poignant, well written tale of a man from a difficult childhood who finds himself returned to his hometown via difficult circumstances. It paints an honest picture, one that becomes some real that you find yourself mistaking it for an autobiography in places. Impossible to put down once started, it will leave you thinking long after you have finished it.

Mr. Berger has spent thirty-four years keeping his life as empty as possible. His job title as a closed accounts registrar doesn't spark much interest, and his cautious flirtation with a woman at his company was cut short upon her engagement to another man. This doesn't bother him, however, as he much prefers the company of books to that of people. When a series of fortuitous events leads to an early retirement in the English countryside, Mr. Berger is content to spend the remainder of his years nestled comfortably between the pages of a book. But fate has other plans.

His serene life turns strange when he witnesses a tragedy chillingly reminiscent of Anna Karenina as a woman flings herself before a train. When he rushes to the scene, she has vanished, leaving no body on the tracks. Berger's investigation into this event leads him to Caxton Private Lending Library & Book Depository, where the line between fiction and reality becomes blurred beyond comprehension.

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful. A satisfying novel in a few short pages By JZS John Connolly is best known for his Charlie Parker series which, from book reviews, always seemed too violent for my tastes. In addition, I recently had a frustrating experience with another "short" so I was a little hesitant about getting "The Museum of Literary Souls". But the book description was so interesting that I couldn't resist and now I am so happy that I have this. What a small treasure. Connolly's story of the ultimate book lover and a book lover's paradise is a pleasure from beginning to end. To call this a short story really doesn't do it justice. He has managed to create a complete, satisfying novel in 17 very short chapters (on the kindle fire HD the book is actually over 100 pages). In the first chapter alone Connolly provides a satisfying background for the protagonist that most authors couldn't have accomplished in the space of the entire book. And the prose loses nothing in the conciseness of the writing. I've been reading a lot of late Victorian/ early 20th century books of late and Connolly's prose has much of the same rhythm and charm.Could this have been an entertaining longer book? Sure. More iconic characters and details about them, more "adventures". That might have pushed me from a strong "like it" to a "love it"; but, I don't feel short changed in any way with it just as it is.I probably still won't read the Charlie Parker novels but for the first time in a long time I'm actually excited about an author and will definitely be getting others. Starting with his Samuel Johnson novels I think....

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Full 5-stars for this one. By Richard Pelroy Clever and charming original fantasy in a slightly unpredicted vein. Borrowing from quantum mechanics and the infentessimal world of atoms, we bring into existance what we look for, in this case, iconic heros and heronines from literataure. Made me look for more of Mr. Conolly (which I bought).

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This was a quick, fun read. By Jessica I love the novella format, perfect for an evening's read. I also loved this book and would really enjoy future "episodes" if a sequel were written. The concept is imaginative with a bit of mystery which makes it easy to suspend any disbelief the reader may have; just enter the world of the Museum and enjoy. The main character has enough complexity to keep him interesting without being so fascinating as to overwhelm the story--nice balance. A peek without giving away too much:We meet thirty-something bachelor, Mr. Berger, leading his sort of solitary and detached existence as an accountant who has no real personal life and no real prospects and who seems doomed to lead a nearly invisible life. But, Mr. Berger is a reader, a collector, a lover of books, and it is this love for books that becomes his salvation when his curiosity is peaked by a chance meeting with a woman who bears an uncanny resemblance to a character he knows all too well from a favorite title. Mr. Berger finds his fortunes inexplicably changed and life blooms for the once lonely bean counter. He learns why alcohol, pity and bad writing are a dangerous combination but also that true compassion and propriety are invaluable. Highly recommended.More please, Mr. Connolly.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A superb, current, comprehensive country handbook By Jon L Albee Let's think about this for a moment. One out of every five people in the world comes from India. There are 13 major languages written in 4 major scripts. The geography includes the world's tallest mountains, deserts, tropical rain forest, rivers, lakes and beaches. Every major religion in the world is represented. Politics stretch from communist West Bengal to staunchly conservative Gujarat. There are at least 4 major, distinct types of cuisine. Bombay, Delhi and Calcutta are all among the largest cities on earth, but India is still 80 percent rural. To call this country "epic" is almost silly. To really grasp the reality, it's helpful to think of India as a confederation of affiliated independent countries. Now, the book. One volume that attempts to cover this vastness is, by definition, summary. There's simply no other way to do it. That means that only the highlights are covered in certain areas. But the thing that makes this a really good book is that the writers have sought the special places, the secrets, that can make a trip to India both authentic and rewarding. Without question, India can be an exercise in frustration. It can assault the senses and sensibilities with harsh reality. A book like this serves as a great primer for your impending experience. This book is not so much designed for trekking as it is for urban exploration. It's the kind of guide that helps you plan a trip rather than to guide you once you're knee deep in the muck. It includes nice, concise summaries of each location, followed by rich directories of listings. All this is framed by recommended itineraries, and social and historical contexts to give your travel an anchor in the larger world. This is all standard Lonely Planet material. So there's really nothing new as far as layout or organization of the book, but the listings are right up to date, the recommendations are spot on, and the descriptions of some places have been changed to reflect reality. I noticed, in particular, that the tone of the writing gives more attention to the state of Gujarat, for example, when that state had been essentially dismissed as an afterthought in previous editions. This is your comprehensive, up-to-date guide to India.

Purchased this to learn more about the country and prepare for a trip in the future. It's quite a thick book (buyer beware). Not a pocket book by any means. Still lots more to explore within this book. I thought I knew where I wanted to go in India, and now I have a better resource and insight into India's depth and vastness. Hope this guide helps readers discover their own path. Enjoy.

So I went on a long trip around SE Asia which included many countries in the area. I was thrilled when I found out that these books were on Kindle. I figured I could download the books instead of carrying a heavy book with the limited space in my pack, and I was going to need a lot of books. For starters, the Kindle books are worthless. Instead of having more information, because they don't have to use more paper, there is less information. In fact, so little that it looks like they put these books together in such a hurry just to get by so they could throw them out there. The formatting is outrageous. Even the worst Kindle books have clickable links so you don't have to scroll back and forth, back and forth, from the index. I asked Amazon for a refund and had them delete the worthless excuse for a publication.Next, most all of the information in all the different countries' books I looked at in bookstores and from other travelers was way out of date, and these are new books. The worst problem is that there is so little information as to make these books a complete waste of owning. All the great places I stayed at, and everybody else easily found as well, are not in their books. Following Lonely Planet guides actually keeps you from finding all the best places to stay, because you are relying on out of date, poorly researched information. They will tell you things like this is the place all the backpackers go and is the best value, and it will be completely wrong. I went to one place they gave a great review in a new book, and it seemed like a drug den with gangsters running it. The new owners of Lonely Planet have taken the good name of the Wheelers and their past accomplishments, and are milking it for all it's worth without putting in the work. Here is what I suggest. Go to Google maps to look at the cities or places you plan to go. Even the smallest places like Don Khon, or Thakhek, in Laos, or Cambodia, or wherever, will have hotels listed on Agoda, or Booking.com, or some other site, for example. Just Google the place name and hotels. You will also see other places listed on Google map which have links to reviews, with up to date listings and prices. You will also see where the concentrations of places to stay are in a town, that might not have a link, and then you simply go there and look around. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the way Lonely Planet was getting it's limited information, because in everything I read, it seemed that they had never visited any of the limited places they cover, and when I say limited, I mean limited. How they can have the guts to print out new editions with less information than the previous one is beyond me. My fifteen-year-old edition of India, for example, had more maps than the new book. Anyway, you don't need maps in a book anymore. Everything you need to know is up on the web and current and the smallest villages have internet access.I would look at fellow traveler's books in disbelief. The people carrying them said they were almost useless. It was a common topic of conversation. Everyone said they would no longer buying these. One guy joked about feeding it to the cows that commonly eat paper out of the trash in India. Seriously, they would be more useful with blank pages so you can write in your own info, or that from other travelers. Don't waste your money or be disrespected by these slackers, who I wouldn't be surprised never travelled farther than their computers to the coffee machine.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I feel dumber for reading this. By X. S. This has to be the worst book I've read this year. There is no pretence of editing. It's hard enough to get past massive grammatical errors every other paragraph, but there is even more at play here. The author did a quick pass over with the spell checker and called it a day. As a result, words are missing entirely from sentences, ridiculous combinations of words are injected in various places, and it becomes impossible to take this work seriously.

Hendrickson I have found Rough Guides easy to use, with more detail than is often found in other guidebooks, and this guide to Chile is no exception. I have been reading the 2015 library copy, and realize I should really have this book in hand on my upcoming trip, especially since I usually tear my books apart and take only the sections for the areas I plan to visit. I especially like the city and region maps. I've also found that the Kindle editions are just not as easy to navigate, much as I hoped I could save luggage weight with them. Better to fold up a few pages to take out on the street, especially if you are not paying roaming charges or may not even have a phone along. I also like the overviews in the contexts sections of history, landscape and environment, music, literature and cinema.

Best PDF Ebook Lions of Kandahar: The Story of a Fight Against All Odds, by Rusty Bradley, Kevin Maurer

Includes a new Afterword by the authorsOne of the most critical battles of the Afghan War is now revealed as never before. Lions of Kandahar is an inside account from the unique perspective of an active-duty U.S. Army Special Forces commander, an unparalled warrior with multiple deployments to the theater who has only recently returned from combat there.Southern Afghanistan was slipping away. That was clear to then-Captain Rusty Bradley as he began his third tour of duty there in 2006. The Taliban and their allies were infiltrating everywhere, poised to reclaim Kandahar Province, their strategically vital onetime capital. To stop them, the NATO coalition launched Operation Medusa, the largest offensive in its history. The battlefield was the Panjwayi Valley, a densely packed warren of walled compounds that doubled neatly as enemy bunkers, lush orchards, and towering marijuana stands, all laced with treacherous irrigation ditches. A mass exodus of civilians heralded the carnage to come.Dispatched as a diversionary force in support of the main coalition attack, Bradley’s Special Forces A-team and two others, along with their longtime Afghan Army allies, watched from across the valley as the NATO force was quickly engulfed in a vicious counterattack. Key to relieving it and calling in effective air strikes was possession of a modest patch of high ground called Sperwan Ghar. Bradley’s small detachment assaulted the hill and, in the midst of a savage and unforgettable firefight, soon learned they were facing nearly a thousand seasoned fighters—from whom they seized an impossible victory. Now Bradley recounts the whole remarkable story as it actually happened. The blistering trek across Afghanistan’s infamous Red Desert. The eerie traces of the elusive Taliban. The close relations with the Afghan people and army, a primary mission focus. Sperwan Ghar itself: unremitting waves of fire from machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades; a targeted truck turned into an inferno; the death trap of a cut-off compound. Most important: the men, Americans and Afghans alike—the “shaky” medic with nerves of steel and a surgeon’s hands in battle; the tireless sergeant who seems to be everywhere at once; the soft-spoken intelligence officer with laser-sharp insight; the diminutive Afghan commander with a Goliath-sized heart; the cool maverick who risks all to rescue a grievously wounded comrade—each unique, all indelible in their everyday exercise of extraordinary heroism.Praise for Lions of Kandahar   “A raw and authentic war story about untamed Green Berets in action.”—Dalton Fury, New York Times bestselling author of Kill Bin Laden   “A powerful and gripping account of a battle that helped shape the war in Afghanistan . . . With crisp writing and page-turning action, Lions of Kandahar is one of the best books written about the conflict.”—Mitch Weiss, Pulitzer Prize–winning investigative journalist and co-author of Tiger Force: A True Story of Men and War   “One of the most important documents to emerge from the war in Afghanistan.”—The Seattle Times   “Powerful . . . a riveting account of a strategic battle that doesn’t glorify war or focus on heroic deeds . . . Make room on your military bookshelf for Lions of Kandahar.”—San Antonio Express-News   “Bradley takes the reader into battle.”—Time

Lions of Kandahar: The Story of a Fight Against All Odds, by Rusty Bradley, Kevin Maurer

Amazon.com Review A Letter from the Author President Obama announced that 10,000 U.S. troops from Afghanistan will return home this year and another 23,000 will redeploy by summer 2012. For me, it wasn't an announcement. It was an order by my commander-in-chief and a decision well above my pay grade. Debates over troop levels and strategy are left to the men who wear stars on their uniforms or suits in Washington. My war is one that is fought every day like it is Sept. 12, 2001, whether I am in Afghanistan or not. As an Army officer, I watched, initially horrified, as the planes hit the World Trade Center and knew that I was going to war. I've done so five times. But my view has always been from the ground floor. I am the action arm of my commander-in-chief, not a policy maker. In the summer of 2006, my orders were simple: partner with the Afghan army and assist the Canadians as they launched a major NATO offensive through the Panjwayi Valley in southern Afghanistan during Operation Medusa. The mission didn't go as planned, and my fellow Green Berets and I, with our Afghan allies, seized a key hill--Sperwan Ghar--from Taliban and foreign fighters, taking the pressure off our Canadian allies trapped in the valley. Over the next eleven days, we held off wave after wave of Taliban fighters before we finally broke them. I spent the rest of that rotation building a base and establishing a series of checkpoints that attempted to secure the valley. We did the best we could to keep the lid on things in Afghanistan until the cavalry arrived. And they arrived last year. With the help of the U.S. troop surge, we were able to establish new footholds, consolidate our gains, and expand Afghan Security control while driving the Taliban from several of their critical sanctuaries, including the Panjwayi Valley. I returned to the valley last summer to assist in establishing security, development, and governance in the valley's villages. As part of a program focused on building up one village at a time, I helped coordinate aid and the training of local police from the district level with the goal of creating a stable local government that could eventually link in with the national one in Kabul. What our units did in 2006 is still a very critical part of the narrative there. Afghans know of the battle for Sperwan Ghar, still remember it, and still know me because of my thick gray beard. The outcome of the battle changed the way the Taliban operates. Where once they fought brazenly in the open, they now hide like cowards in among the Afghan people and fight with IEDs and suicide bombers. And they clearly know the difference between the Special Forces and conventional soldiers and give the "bearded ones" a wider berth. While the other parts of country are now under control of Afghan security forces, there is still very much a fight in the south. The Panjwayi and Zhari districts are key territory because many of the Taliban's leaders are landowners there. This is their center of gravity and the birthplace of their movement. So they are essentially fighting for their homeland in every sense of the word. It is here that the extra troops matter the most. This summer, the key battles and in some way the fate of the war will be decided on this same battlefield. I am often asked what I think we should do in Afghanistan. I have my opinions. But when I put on my uniform every morning, that opinion doesn't matter. I know only one thing: my mission was to go to southern Afghanistan, disrupt the Taliban, and assist the Afghan people in building a country. And I did that. Do troop levels matter? Absolutely. Every soldier, every commander, wants the best equipment and the most men. But I'll worry about troop levels when I have stars on my uniform. Right now my job is to execute the orders of those who do.

Review “One of the most important documents to emerge from the war in Afghanistan.”—The Seattle Times “Powerful . . . a riveting account of a strategic battle that doesn’t glorify war or focus on heroic deeds . . . Make room on your military bookshelf for Lions of Kandahar.”—San Antonio Express-News “Bradley takes the reader into battle.”—Time“A raw and authentic war story about untamed Green Berets in action. Bradley and Maurer crush it! Mr. President, grab a copy—this is a sure-bet Special Forces exit strategy. Unleash more of these brave lions across Afghanistan and America will win this war.”—Dalton Fury, New York Times bestselling author of Kill Bin Laden: A Delta Force Commander’s Account of the Hunt for the World’s Most Wanted Man“A powerful and gripping account of a battle that helped shape the war in Afghanistan. But Lions of Kandahar is more than that. Major Rusty Bradley and Kevin Maurer give readers a stirring inside look at the day-to-day operations of a Special Forces team—and what it takes to defeat insurgents hell-bent on regaining control of Afghanistan. With crisp writing and page-turning action, Lions of Kandahar is one of the best books written about the conflict.”—Mitch Weiss, Pulitzer Prize–winning investigative journalist and co-author of the critically acclaimed Tiger Force: A True Story of Men and War“This is a riveting tale, told from the front lines of the secret war against the Taliban. Lions of Kandahar is the definitive account of a modern Special Forces mission—a must-read for anyone hoping to understand the harsh realities of the Afghan conflict.”—David Zucchino, Pulitzer-Prize-winning journalist and author of Thunder Run: The Armored Strike to Capture Baghdad“I have read this book three times and I am still chilled to the bone with every word. In Lions of Kandahar you will be riveted by the unabridged action of our real-life military heroes. It took a group of exceptional individuals to accomplish Operation Medusa. We as a nation can only pray we have half the guts and fortitude given selflessly every day on our behalf by the Army Special Forces.”—Marshall R. Teague, actor; U.S. Navy (ret.)“The war in Afghanistan is made for Special Forces, but very little has been written about these soldiers since the initial attack on Afghanistan in 2001. Bradley and Maurer do a great job of showing how these elite units fight and why they are so important to the battle against the Taliban. Lions of Kandahar is a gripping, moving, and well-told war story.”—Greg Jaffe, Washington Post reporter and co-author of The Fourth Star: Four Generals and the Epic Struggle for the Future of the United States ArmyFrom the Hardcover edition.

About the Author Major Rusty Bradley was wounded during the Battle of Sperwan Ghar in command of a Special Forces A-team, on his third combat tour as a Special Forces team leader. A native of North Carolina, he graduated from Mars Hill College and enlisted in the Army in 1993, serving as an infantryman for six years before earning his commission from Officer Candidate School in 1999.                                       Kevin Maurer has been embedded as a reporter with the U.S. Special Forces and 82nd Airborne Division in Afghanistan and Iraq more than a dozen times in the last five years. From the Hardcover edition.

Wow, I am glad I am safe at home By Terry L I know that unless you were there yourself, it is impossible to understand what those in the book were really going through, but this description of battle is spine-tingling never-the-less.I have read several books concerning the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the first part of this book I would rate about average with those others. However, once the main battle starts, this book is simply amazing. It describes in vivid, harrowing detail the battle raging around the author and those around him. It makes one wonder how any one survived the battle. When I started the book, I would read a bit, put it down and read some more later. But once the description of the battle started, I didn't put the book down until the end. I wanted to know what was going to happen next and if those involved were going to survive. The writing and description of what was going on was excellent. I could picture the scene in my head as if it were a movie. This book gave me a much greater appreciation of, and a greater respect of, what our servicemen are going through. What I liked about the book the most is that we see the battle though the eyes of the author as he was directly involved in the battle. We see what he is seeing, feel what he is feeling, and get to know what he was thinking when making decisions. This is a book about how the battle was fought by individual men and how it affected them. It is personal, written by one was being shot at, not by one directing a war effort miles away.I would give the book a 3 star rating for the first part as the author gives us a general idea of what was going on, what he had done before and the people involved. But once the battle starts, I give the book a double 5 rating, so that brings the total star rating up to 5.This book is just plain excellent in presenting the personal view of a battle from the eyes of one man.

Once in a while you hear a story on the news about a coalition death, but by and large the media, and the country, have focused on other things."Lions of Kandahar" serves as a sobering reminder of what the human cost of the War on Terror really is. These events are not some distant event you read about in the history books: the battle for Sperwan Ghar took place less than five years ago. Author Rusty Bradley is still in the Special Forces (so far, the only active-duty SF soldier ever allowed to write a book with the backing of the Army), about to start his fourth rotation in Afghanistan. And since the battle did not get the media attention it probably deserved, when you pick up the book it is not a foregone conclusion who will win the battle.A first-person account, the book describes the war in vivid, often excruciating, detail. The first half of the book covers Bradley with his unit beginning his tour. The action is somewhat slow in building but provides a fascinating glimpse into a world few of us can imagine. Once the team arrives at the valley, though, the book turns into the literary equivalent of the D-Day scene in "Saving Private Ryan" - a harrowing, no-details spared account of a group of soldiers taking on a vastly overwhelming foe.Not for the sensitive ears, faint of heart or those who cannot read a book by an author with differing opinions (Bradley does his best to make the book apolitical, but his own opinions are understandably very strong), "Lions of Kandahar" is a fascinating read that reminds us that foreign policy is much more than a policy, that war is hell and that there are real people behind the statistics. I, for one, have a profound new respect for our Special Forces.

Jetsons versus Flintstones in Afghanistan By Man in the Middle "Lions of Kandahar" describes the most important battle we've never heard about until now, one in which a few dozen American special forces and Afghan allies saved overall U.S. and N.A.T.O. efforts in Afghanistan from disaster in 2006. Writing this a few days after the death of Osama Bin Laden at the hands of a similar team of Navy SEALS, I find myself thankful we have such special forces heroes on our side in our continuing troubles. The mission of this book is described as follows: "My team was tasked to 'clean out' the Taliban and foreign fighters, mitigate their influence, reinstate local, legitimate governance, and assist in the reconstruction and security of an underdeveloped urban area the size of Rhode Island. This Herculean task was given to ten men."In the course of the book we come to know these incredibly-heroic men, and the answers to such questions as why they fight. "My family is why I fight, but it's hard for them to understand the reason I had to travel thousands of miles away to do it." To some extent, we also come to know their enemy. "Their ideology does not value their own people, except as sacrifices for their cause."The battle itself pits the best of the best American warriors, using advanced equipment and aerial support (a la the Jetsons) against much larger Taliban and foreign forces (the Flintstones) using cheap but effective older weapons and communications technology. We also see, once again, how overly-restrictive rules of engagement nearly lose the day against opponents who respect no such rules. The history leading up to the pivotal battle is detailed and interesting. No punches are pulled in describing prior failures and opposition that led to the battle and almost to its loss. We hear also about the crucial air support and satellite intelligence that allows such small teams to do so much.In the end I'm saddened that the crucial victory achieved at Sperwan Ghar may again have been frittered away by others in the years since 2006, leaving us again on the point of losing in Afghantistan. Here's hoping the sacrifices detailed in this book will prove sufficient.Years ago, I very much enjoyed reading "Delta Force", by Charlie Beckwith. But "Lions of Kandahar" is even better, in my opinion.Highly recommended!(Hat tip to Thomas Friedman, via Instapundit and Mark Steyn for the review title)

Helpful guide that provides some good information for travelers By Cassandra Mitchell This is a short, but helpful guide that provides some good information for travelers visiting Italy. There are recommendations on which cities to visit, and the highlights of each area, the best places to shop, and the best local dishes to try. A little Italian history is also included. Most helpful are the insider tips for tourists, like appropriate attire for visiting churches and how to get a tax rebate on your souvenir purchases.

A wonderful book that teaches us to be successful is more about discipline, routine, following a code of honor, building relationships and about serving. My biggest takeaway is that to be successful or failing may have more to do about not knowing what we don't know vs. what we know. This is a simple read with deep insights. I highly recommend it, especially for anyone thinking about going to college, while not knowing what you want to do.William TehInvestor | Author | EntrepreneurTTTrends Investments

Being in the Army, it sparked a new passion in what I do, what lessons the military is teaching me ( even though I may not be fully aware of it) , and what added value I can contribute back to the community based on my experience. Not only did it give me a perspective of someone looking back, but it also made me more aware of the the opportunities that are all around me in the military RIGHT NOW. What a great resource.-SPC Koch
