By 1400, the foundation of the Italian Renaissance had been laid. There was burgeoning trade and industry, newly wealthy individuals and cities, and a new political freedom and energy throughout the land. The prevailing mood was one of change and improvement; old moral restraints and medieval dogmas were crumbling, and in their place was a zeal for building on the classics of ancient Greece and Rome to create a better civilization. And finally, there was rivalry: between cities, merchant princes, artists, all vying to do better than anyone else, whether they were planning an ideal state, building a church, or striking a medal. It was the wealthiest and most menacing age Europe had ever known; Italy possessed the greatest concentration of gifted individuals that Western civilization had seen for 1,000 years, and the conjunction of genius and the times produced an explosion of energy as powerful as an erupting volcano. Here, from the eminent British Historian Sir J. H. Plumb, is the story of the Renaissance.

43 of 44 people found the following review helpful. re-release with less content?? By R. Mead First published under the title "Italian Renaissance" in 1961 then republished in 2001 and 320 pages then.Only half is the writing of J.H. Plumb. At 227 pages under title "The Renaissance" this seems to offer much less than the original book - and it was received with mediocre reviews. You can see both tables of contents on Amazon. This looks like a cut and reshuffle of the original. No bargain here.

A read worthy of its subject By KFreeman A friend invited me to celebrate her 50th in Florence next month, so I got this book to add to the trip - I've spent too much time looking at cathedrals and paintings without knowing about the people and stories behind them. Plumb does a great job bringing an age and a place to life. Highly recommended.

Mr. Plumb chose wisely when he chose authors of each chapter. In some, even most respects, The Renaissance WAS Italy as much as Italy was The Renaissance. My notes, when I download them, will look like Cliff Notes for an exam.
