In June 201 3, Yves and Martine decided to sell everything they owned and hit the roads of North America with their beloved dog Lulu. They lived in a camping-car, slept in a Civil War cabin, captured a rattle snake with the Navajo people and even spent a night near Area 51 . During winter of 201 4, they decided to continue their adventures aboard a russian motorcycle, a Ural. Half-way between a travel log and a user guide for Ural lovers, this book relates their winter journey on the East Coast, from Quebec to Florida.

The couple in the book showed a refreshing disdain for the modern 'get there and back as fast as possible' type of travel that is the mainstream preference today, and opted for a slower, take the back roads and smell the roses approach. Since they have a big dog a regular motorcycle was not suitable so they chose a Ural 2 wheel drive sidecar motorcycle. The book describes the journey and the people they met on their trip. As a Ural owner for 18 years I know several of the people she met.The information about the motorcycle is very honest and matter of fact. It's not a speedster, but operated within it's design parameters it's a simple reliable work horse. The author respects that and makes no exaggerated claims about the bike. The book is an easy read, not too long, and has several nice photographs. Another review mentioned some language hiccups, but the meaning is not impaired and it is better than I would have done had the situation been reversed.Recommended if you wonder what travel on a sidecar motorcycle is like.

By LorenB Considering the author is French/Canadian there are some lapses in the writing and editing.I admire their daring and enthusiasm. Although, as a Ural Patrol rider with my trusty sidecar cattle dog, I am not the most objective reader.

Aging and creativity can seem a particularly fraught relationship for artists, who often face age-related difficulties as their audience’s expectations are at a peak. In Four Last Songs, Linda and Michael Hutcheon explore this issue via the late works of some of the world’s greatest composers. Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901), Richard Strauss (1864–1949), Olivier Messiaen (1908–92), and Benjamin Britten (1913–76) all wrote operas late in life, pieces that reveal unique responses to the challenges of growing older. Verdi’s Falstaff, his only comedic success, combated Richard Wagner’s influence by introducing young Italian composers to a new model of national music. Strauss, on the other hand, struggling with personal and political problems in Nazi Germany, composed the self-reflexive Capriccio, a “life review” of opera and his own legacy. Though it exhausted him physically and emotionally, Messiaen at the age of seventy-five finished his only opera, Saint François d’Assise, which marked the pinnacle of his career. Britten, meanwhile, suffering from heart problems, refused surgery until he had completed his masterpiece, Death in Venice. For all four composers, age, far from sapping their creative power, provided impetus for some of their best accomplishments. With its deft treatment of these composers’ final years and works, Four Last Songs provides a valuable look at the challenges—and opportunities—that present themselves as artists grow older.

Four Last Songs: Aging and Creativity in Verdi, Strauss, Messiaen, and Britten, by Linda Hutcheon, Michael Hutcheon

Review “Warmly recommended.” (Library Journal)“Well written, and, best of all, will make the reader want to hear the music discussed, or hear it again. . . . Recommended.” (Choice)“An extremely inspiring study of a heroic quartet.” (Leslie Barcza barczablog)“The fascinating profiles of each of these composers in Four Last Songs, makes it clear that their successful final stages were due to far more than abundant talent and prior success, but to the heroic levels of discipline and commitment to their work honed over a lifetime of productivity. . . . Four Last Songs is full of material of interest to opera lovers as well as students of human nature and though it has special pertinence to readers embarking on the last great era of their lives, it is never too soon to reflect on how to manage life now in order to savour it later.”   (Musical Toronto)“Four Last Songs takes its readers on a vivid musicological journey across the rhythms of tradition and discords of modernity to arrive at the late careers of Verdi, Strauss, Messiaen, and Britten, whose operas tell big stories about nation and identity, finitude and transcendence. Bravo to the Hutcheons for bringing their historical discoveries and brilliant sense of the unexplored to inspire age studies today and into the future.” (Stephen Katz, Trent University)“This is an excellent book with implications and resonances that reach far beyond the study of the four composers. It displays a tremendous range of knowledge across a spectrum of disciplines: musicology, critical theory, humanistic gerontology. The Hutcheons are pioneers in creating such a synthesis. Timely in its arguments, Four Last Songs will appeal widely and make a powerful impact.” (Gordon McMullan, King’s College London)“Limits to creativity are rarely imposed by nature alone; rather it is social constraints that have often weighed heavily on those pursuing significant creative goals late in life. This important book beautifully validates what those who continue to pursue professional and personal projects in their late years already know; but for others, who associate aging with ebbing energy and creative fatigue, this book is, and should be, a revelation.” (Michael Beckerman, New York University)“As a practicing geriatrician, I was inspired by these accounts of creativity in old age. As an opera lover (Verdi’s Falstaff is one of my particular favorites), I enjoyed the stories about these remarkable composers. I would highly recommend this elegantly written book for any reader interested in opera, or creativity, or aging.” (Barry J. Goldlist, University of Toronto and Mount Sinai Hospital)

About the Author Linda Hutcheon is university professor emeritus of English and comparative literature at the University of Toronto and the author of many books on contemporary culture and theory. Michael Hutcheon is a pulmonologist and professor of medicine at the University of Toronto. Together they have written several books on opera and medical culture, most recently Opera: The Art of Dying.

Best PDF Ebook Online Patton: A History of the American Main Battle Tank, by R.P. Hunnicutt

This ambitious entry in R.P. Hunnicutt's 10-volume compendium of American tank history details the development of the Patton tanks, including the M60 series as well as other vehicles based on the tank chassis or employing other elements of the tank's design. First developed in the period between WWII and the Korean War, various iterations of the Patton armored military vehicle have served as a crucial component of American military operations in all manner of engagements.

Hunnicutt spares no detail as he examines the origins and deployment of the M46 and M47 in the early days of the Cold War and for the duration of the Korean War. As the conflict escalated, increasing numbers of Patton tanks were deployed in Korea and many remained after the armistice to protect the tenuous agreement.

Developed to replace the M47 Patton and M4 Sherman, the M48 Patton main battle tank boasted a variety of technical improvements and was relied upon heavily throughout the Vietnam War, with over 600 individual tanks deployed alongside U.S. forces during the war. Hunnicutt provides detailed technical information about these vehicles and their role in the U.S. Army and Marines. The M60 product-improved descendant of the Patton tanks and its many variations is also treated with exacting detail by Hunnicutt, who takes us through the numerous and important variations on the Patton design.

Spanning the history of America's most widely used main battle tank, Hunnicutt's Patton is an absolute must-have for anyone interested in the history of the American military.

Richard Pearce Hunnicutt (1926-2011) enlisted in the 7th Infantry Division in 1944 and in 1945 was promoted to sergeant and awarded the Silver Star for his heroic actions. After WWII, Hunnicutt earned a Masters in engineering from Stanford University under the GI Bill. In addition to being one of the most respected metallurgists in California, Hunnicutt wrote the definitive 10-volume history of the development and employment of American armored vehicles. As a tank historian and leading expert in the field, Hunnicutt was one of the founders of the US Army Ordnance Museum at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD and was a close friend and frequent contributor to the Patton Museum at Fort Knox, KY.

This book covers the history and development of America's longest service series of tanks, the Patton.Tracing the post Korea era, Hunnicutt provides excellent detail of all prototypes, models and varients of the M-47, M-48 and M-60 series. The photos, line drawings and text fully explain the armament, suspension, hull, turret, automotive - you name it, it's there. You get what you pay for in life, if you can find this, buy it. I have read this many times over am glad I have this in my collection.

Each of them is a classic; this is perhaps the best of the best. When you discuss the Patton tank (unofficial name of the M-48 and M-60 series tanks), you begin with the WW2 designed Pershing tank. Why? Because the M-46, M-48, and M-60 tanks all trace their heritage back to the M-26. The M-60 was an evolution that began with a tank designed in 1942.That is one of the things that makes this book so great. It's not just about one tank. Here, you'll find line drawings, photos of every tank from every angle inside and out, cutaways of M-26, M-46, M-48, M-60, M-60A1, M-60A2, and M-60A3. And there is more - Engineer vehicles, The CEV, M-88, Artillery tanks, AA tanks (Sgt York). There are 60 pages of B&W photos showing the Patton tank in service, 8 pages of the tanks in color. 38 pages of vehicle data sheets which give you every specification on each tank covered in the book. You can find here the weights, dimensions and performance of everything from the cannon to the engines and all that lay between.I am a huge armor fan and collector of tank books - this is probably the best single book of them all. There are many newer books with more color and certainly more affordable. Hopefully, this book will go back in print and become available to a new generation of tankers and historians. My copy is frayed and worn from all the times I have referenced it, re-read it. Am glad I plunked down the $60.00 to buy it back in 1998.

This is not a subject that has recieved a lot of attention, but with the fall of communism and the peace dividend the M-60 should recieve its proper place in history. It trulely helped to win the cold war

Border War is a timely thriller about the struggles of US law enforcement officers on the Mexican border by TV broadcaster Lou Dobbs.

The border is a tough place to work, especially for FBI agent Tom Eriksen. With a history of violence, he cannot afford any on-duty screw-ups. So when an investigation ends in a bloody shootout and the shooting is deemed "questionable," the bureau reassigns Eriksen to an office known as "the Island of Misfit Cops": a resting place for those who have screwed up enough to warrant being dumped in El Paso, Texas.

But when his partner is murdered, Eriksen must take charge and solve the case, wading through corruption and betrayal to discover the truth. Only after he teams up with a resourceful and gorgeous NSA agent, Kat Gleason, does his luck change. As they slowly put the puzzle pieces together, the investigation points to a powerful cartel lord and a shadowy US computer company.

As the web of deceit and betrayal tightens, the body count grows. Eriksen must deal with the mayhem caused by the cartels while racing against the clock to stop an assassin whose target is someone very close to him.

Border War, by Lou Dobbs, James O. Born

From Booklist Let’s haul out the thriller checklist and see what we have here. FBI agent with troubled history: check. Beautiful new partner: check. Powerful villain: check. Murdered friend/colleague: check. Ruthless, conspiratorial corporation: check. This is a by-the-numbers thriller that, despite its formulaic approach, is actually pretty good. Not great by any means: the writing is often clunky, and the characters are not what you would call fresh. But the book, which concerns the efforts of an FBI agent to find out who’s responsible for the murder of his former partner, even if it means going up against a powerful drug lord, does hold our interest. Tom Eriksen, the FBI agent, is a stock character, but the authors (Dobbs, the veteran broadcaster; Born, a DEA-agent-turned-novelist) give him enough depth to make him feel like a real person. Ramon Herrera, the drug lord, is appropriately evil and ambitious, and the ruthless corporation (a U.S. company working with Herrera) is presented realistically enough that we believe such a conspiracy could actually happen. The novel doesn’t break any new ground, but it does make going over familiar ground an enjoyable enough reading experience. --David Pitt

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A beach read that champions the right By Leslie N. Patino FBI agent Tom Eriksen has been sent to El Paso as punishment for some hotheaded behavior. Now he’s got a boss looking for reasons to fault him. Our man gives the boss plenty of fodder since he keeps getting into sticky situations where people turn up dead and where Eriksen shouldn’t have been to begin with.I admit I was a little skeptical when I heard Lou Dobbs had written a novel. I suspect that James O. Born, who has written other thrillers, probably did most of the work. In exchange, he got access to Dobbs’ very large audience. If you compare the number of Amazon reviews for “Border War” with those for Born’s earlier books, it looks like he got a good deal. According to what I see, since “Border War’s” May 6th publication, Born has published three more books with another scheduled for April, 2015. I don’t think even Stephen King could crank out books that fast and not have his craftsmanship slip a little. Not surprising that there are phrases like “her engineer mind” (engineer’s mind?) and a character named “don Herrera.” In Mexico, the honorific title is used with first names, never with surnames. The good guys went to Harvard, MIT and Princeton. Pretty much all them are very handsome or beautiful. So much sex appeal makes everybody focus on “her beautiful blue eyes,” or “this athletic and cute detective.” The bad guys, of course, include “the tall, goofy-looking guy” and “the little Israeli.”I do give Dobbs and Born credit for spinning a pretty good story. They move the plot along fairly well, although they remind the reader too often of the characters’ motivations for their actions. The story felt a little too formulaic. Dobbs and Born do know their topics well. Of course, the book has a conservative slant—what else would you expect from Dobbs?—but, it wasn’t as strong as I expected. Conclusion: if you want a beach read that champions the right, you’ll probably like “Border War.”

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. BORDER WAR is an excellent read, a complex story full of great characters and told with a pitch-perfect voice and pace. By Bookreporter I have been eagerly and impatiently awaiting the release of BORDER WAR since I first became aware of its pending publication. The pairing of Lou Dobbs and James O. Born as co-authors is a dream collaboration.Dobbs is best known as a commentator for Fox Business Network but has also authored a number of nonfiction books dealing with business and politics. His television and literary efforts are worth exploring for their clear-eyed commentary and well-reasoned conclusions concerning how the world does and does not work. Exposure to Dobbs is similar to an ongoing business and economic seminar that you should have had in college but never did.Born is a well-known and highly respected law enforcement officer with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement who has been responsible for bringing a number of high-profile criminal cases to a successful conclusion (for the good guys, that is). These experiences have been infused through a number of critically acclaimed and commercially successful novels that are required reading for crime fiction aficionados. Thus, my expectations for this book were very high; I’m pleased to report that they were met and even exceeded.BORDER WAR plays out between the very different sister cities of El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. Juarez is considered by many to be one of the world’s most dangerous cities, while El Paso has one of the lowest homicide rates in the United States. The chaotic lawlessness in Juarez threatens to spill across the border into El Paso, where an FBI agent named Tom Eriksen has been transferred after his apparent involvement in a questionable shooting. The office, known as the “Island of Misfit Cops,” is supposed to be a resting place for Eriksen while things are sorted out and cooled off.Eriksen, notwithstanding the attitude of his FBI supervisor, is a good, solid agent, still new enough at the job to be idealistic but with sufficent experience to keep himself alive. His situation attracts support from a couple of individuals from outside the Bureau. One is a national television commentator whose reasoned viewpoints on immigration and its solutions have garnered praise and brickbats for him on both sides of the border. The other is a newly minted Texas senator of Hispanic descent whose opinions on immigration and terrorism have made her extremely unpopular with a number of people, particularly the powerful kingpin of a Mexican drug cartel. As things play out for Eriksen both inside and outside of his office, two disparate and opposing forces --- the aforementioned drug lord and a computer company --- pursue an IT whiz and a Mexican doctor for their own reasons. That pursuit dovetails back on Eriksen, who finds himself caught in a number of crossfires, one of which leads back to his own office. The title “the Island of Misfit Cops” soon becomes ironic in more ways than one, as Eriksen works to discover the identity of an informant in his office, who is much closer to him than he imagines.BORDER WAR is an excellent read, a complex story full of great characters and told with a pitch-perfect voice and pace. While the story is complete in itself, Dobbs and Born leave the door open for a sequel (or more) at its conclusion, which, in this case, is the best possible ending of all. More? To the gods of publishing, we say “YES!”Reviewed by Joe Hartlaub.

By Lord Hawke Any time you pair Lou Dobb's wit, wisdom, and encyclopedic knowledge of all things political alongside a crack crime writerwith a background in law enforcement (and a flair for hard-hitting and often funny dialogue) you're pretty much guaranteedto come up with a winner. Border War is that winner and I urge you NOT to miss it.

Acre for acre, Gettysburg has earned the reputation as the most haunted place in America! The fourth book in Mark Nesbitt's popular "Ghosts of Gettysburg" book series includes more ghostly encounters on the Gettysburg battlefield, on the Gettysburg College campus, and in and around the town of Gettysburg. Some venues are new and some continue to provide unsuspecting visitors with unexpected, and sometimes bizarre, glimpses into another world. The first volume in the "Ghosts of Gettysburg" book series was released in October 1991. Mr. Nesbitt started collecting ghost stories from Gettysburg in the early 1960s. In the 1970s, he worked as a Park Ranger at Gettysburg National Military Park and was assigned to live in some of the historic houses on the Park. His collection of ghost stories grew. As long as visitors to the Gettysburg area continue to share their “ghostly” experiences, Mr. Nesbitt will continue to add to the "Ghosts of Gettysburg" book series.

Ghosts of Gettysburg IV: Spirits, Apparitions and Haunted Places on the Battlefield (Volume 4), by Mark Nesbitt

About the Author I started out in the 1970s as a National Park Service Ranger/Historian in Gettysburg, PA. I knew that I wanted to be a writer, so after five years with the NPS, I got the crazy idea that I should start my own research and writing company. Thus began Interpretive Enterprises. I spent several years as a freelance writer and wondering if I had lost my mind. My first book was a children's book: The Little Drummer Boy. It won an award and boosted my confidence. I had been collecting ghost stories of the Gettysburg area since I first arrived, so I decided to approach a local publisher to see if they'd be interested in a book about the Ghosts of Gettysburg. The first ghost book came out in 1991. Since then, I have written fifteen books, covering topics of historical interest, as well as the paranormal. My stories have been seen on The History Channel, A&E, The Discovery Channel, The Travel Channel, Unsolved Mysteries, The Biography Channel, and numerous regional television shows and heard on Coast to Coast AM, and regional radio. In 1994, I founded "The Ghosts of Gettysburg Candlelight Walking Tours®," a tour based on the stories in my book series. The tour company started out on a card table in the town square. The next year I rented office space at the corner of Baltimore St. and Steinwehr Ave. Finally, in 1997, I purchased the current headquarters building at 271 Baltimore St. In 2006, I expanded into Fredericksburg, VA and started the Ghosts of Fredericksburg Tours.

Fitztroy Maclean was one of the real-life inspirations for super-spy James Bond. After adventures in Soviet Russia before the war, Maclean fought with the SAS in North Africa in 1942. There he specialised in hair-raising commando raids behind enemy lines, including the daring and outrageous kidnapping of the German Consul in Axis-controlled Iraq.

Maclean's extraordinary adventures in the Western Desert and later fighting alongside Tito's partisans in Yugoslavia are blistering reading and show what it took to be a British hero who broke the mould . . .

62 of 62 people found the following review helpful. Spectacular entertainment By Mike Christie In the mid-thirties Fitzroy Maclean was a junior diplomat at the British embassy in Paris. Bored with the pleasant but undemanding routine, he requested a posting to Moscow, and "Eastern Approaches" opens with Maclean on a train, pulling out of Paris. Most of this first section of the book covers his repeated attempts to explore Soviet central Asia. He reached Bokhara, Samarkand, Tashkent and many other places, and though there are sadly few pictures it is a riveting story -- fighting Soviet bureaucracy; being trailed by the NKVD; negotiating with locals for food and a place to sleep. At one point he manages with difficulty to persuade the Soviets to let him cross into Afghanistan: communicating primarily in sign language he manages to obtain an escort to Mazar-i-Sharif, through a lawless area with a cholera outbreak.Maclean was in Moscow until late 1939, and so was present during the great Stalinist purges. One long chapter is devoted to one of the largest of these, in which Bukharin, Yagoda and other stalwarts of the Stalinist regime were accused (and of course convicted) of heinous crimes. The details of the trial, and the responses of the accused, are utterly fascinating; Maclean's analysis equally so.When war broke out, Maclean was prevented from enlisting at first because of his position as a diplomat. He eventually managed to sign up by a subterfuge, and in North Africa Maclean distinguished himself in the early actions of the newly formed SAS. He rose from private to officer rank, and Churchill personally chose him to lead a liaison mission to central Yugoslavia, where Tito and his partisans were emerging as a major irritant to the German control of the Balkans. The last third of the book recounts how over eighteen months Maclean built Allied/Partisan cooperation from nothing to a key element in the last phases of the war. By the end, Maclean was a Major-General, and a friend of Tito's.Maclean is a fine writer, with the British gift for understatement and wry humour. His exploits are said to have formed the basis for the character of James Bond, though Maclean would never confirm or deny this. The sequence when he personally kidnaps a Persian general who is collaborating with the Germans is certainly straight out of a Bond film. The book is spectacularly entertaining: if you have any taste for history, adventure, travel writing or war-time memoirs, this is as good as it gets.

I am rereading it to keep up with current events; Macleans's adventures in Kazakhstan and Afghanistan in the 1930s give a view of this part of the world that is still relevant; he captures all the sights, sounds, and smells. The book is really three books:Part 1 contains Maclean's travels through the Soviet Union as a diplomat, spy, and adventurer in the late 1930s, including his description of the show trial of Bukharin, and his comical adventures going to see Samarkand, Tashkent, and Bokhara -- more out of romantic curiosity than for conducting any official business. A wonderful book about Russia under Stalin.Part 2 -- Maclean joins the war, even though the foreign office has forbidden him to leave his post; he does so by running for Parliament (hence loving his civil servant status), and after winning election, he promptly "runs away" to join his regiment. He ends up in the Long Range Desert Group, doing all kinds of commando work agains the Germans in North Africa.Part 3 -- Maclean becomes the liason to Tito, whom the British are not sure even exists, by parachuting into Yugoslavia. Maclean and his team supply Tito's partisans and coordinate raids that tie down German divisions. Maclean cannot keep Tito from being other than what he is -- a communist, and so the book ends a little poignantly. This is one of the finest -- perhaps the finest -- first hand account of history, ranking right up there with Chruchill's 5 volumes on the second world war. This book is told on a much lower level, but the canvas Maclean covers is nearly as broad. How this was never made into a movie with Sean Connery is beyond me. Some people maintain that Maclean was the prototype of James Bond, but there is a much more human, almost Don Quixote quality to him that makes him and his book unforgettable.

The 20th Century Renaissance Man (he writes too) By hugh riminton Winston Churchill greatly admired TE Lawrence, who as "Lawrence of Arabia" led the Arab revolt in WW1. In WW2, Churchill equally admired Fitzroy MacLean, another well-born Brit who tied his fortunes to a foreign guerrilla warfare operation. But where Lawrence was doomed and dark and full of his own agonies, MacLean carries his charm and wit (and what Australians would call "a larrikin streak") throughout his extraordinary adventures. If MacLean had not existed he would have had to be invented. We meet him as a 20-something diplomat, subverting Stalin's spies in a series of solo explorations into the forbidden zones of Central Asia. He also observes, and astutely analyses, the infamous Soviet show-trial in which Bukharin and other heroes of the 1917 revolution met their fate. When war breaks out, he contrives to escape the diplomatic service, signing on as a lowly private. He ends the war as a general, his breast weighed down with medals from Britain, Yugoslavia, and even the Soviet Union. He is 34. This is the story of those days - racy, funny, bizarre, and full of daring. His adventures with the legendary SAS commando, engaged in lightning strikes deep in Rommel's rear in the North Africa desert are gripping stuff. Selected by Churchill himself to parachute into the Balkans, MacLean takes a frontline role with Tito in arranging the ultimate defeat of German forces there. Essential background reading for anyone remotely interested in the Balkan tragedies of the last decade or so. Soldier, diplomat, linguist, wit, Fitzroy MacLean was reputedly the inspiration for the original James Bond. Undoubtedly a beneficiary of the British class system, he was also an ornament to it. 50 years after its first publication, this remains a unique window to some of the most extraordinary upheavals of the 20th century.

The different ethnic and religious groups of the Middle East seem to be constantly at war. But how did such artificial states come into existence in the first place? The real story of how the modern Middle East was created has long since been lost in myth and counter-myth. At the heart of the problem is the common misunderstanding that the Sykes-Picot Agreement is the source of today’s troubles. This notorious agreement, made in May 1916 between British expert Sir Mark Sykes and his French counterpart, M. Georges-Picot, carved up the Middle East between the imperial powers and has since become the scapegoat for everything that has gone wrong in the region. But in 1917 Sir Edmund Allenby led the British and Australian troops on a successful military campaign to conquer Jerusalem and Damascus in a victory roll that was one of the most outstanding in recent history. And the campaign rendered most of the Sykes-Picot deal of the previous year redundant. So what really created the Middle East as we know it today? In ‘From the Ashes of War: The Creation of the Middle East’ Christopher Catherwood explores this question, challenging the modern assumption that the 1916 pact is to blame, and instead providing evidence that the military achievements of Western Europe in the First World War were much more crucial to the final reformation of the defeated Ottoman Empire. 'From the Ashes of War: The Creation of the Middle East' is a concise, brilliantly argued historical study that will be essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the modern Middle East. Dr Christopher Catherwood is Emeritus Archives By-Fellow of Churchill College Cambridge, Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and has supervised Cambridge undergraduates in British history at Robinson and Homerton Colleges. He has written many books including ‘His Finest Hour - A Brief Life of Winston Churchill’, ‘A Brief History of the Middle East’, ‘The Balkans in WWII’ and ‘Winston Churchill: The Flawed Genius’. Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent publisher of digital books.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. nice summary of the way WWI brought about the modern Middle East By James C. Casterline This brief book explains a lot about the modern Middle East by discussing the WWI campaign that conquered the area from the Ottomans. The author has a bias which is clearly expressed but I think it makes sense. The book is short but covers the subject nicely.

About the Author Jane Ellen Harrison (9 September 1850 – 15 April 1928) was a British classical scholar, linguist and feminist. Harrison is one of the founders, with Karl Kerenyi and Walter Burkert, of modern studies in Greek mythology. She applied 19th century archaeological discoveries to the interpretation of Greek religion in ways that have become standard. Contemporary classics scholar Mary Beard, Harrison's biographer, has described her as "in a way ... [Britain's] first female professional 'career academic'". Ellen Wordsworth Crofts, later second wife of Sir Francis Darwin was Jane Harrison's best friend from her student days at Newnham, and during the period from 1898 to her early death in 1903.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Ian Myles Slater on: Short Book, Large Concepts By Ian M. Slater "Ancient Art and Ritual" is a short, "popular" book by Jane Ellen Harrison (1850-1928), who was a classical scholar by training, and a student of anthropology (or sociology) when Frazer's "The Golden Bough" was still astonishing (or infuriating) classicists with its message that the customs and beliefs of "beastly heathen savages" might shed light on those of the Greeks and Romans. (Who were, of course, strictly speaking, "beastly heathens" themselves.... Not to mention some of their other customs.) On top of this, she pioneered the role of professional academic for women; separating the two aspects in some of the negative reactions to her work can be difficult. Those curious about her now have a very good Wikipedia article to refer to, so I'll forgo a biographical sketch, and a lot of bibliographic detail on her publications. (This takes advantage of well-documented modern studies, Sandra J. Peacock's 1988 biography, "Jane Ellen Harrison: The Mask and the Self," and Mary Beard's 2000 "The Invention of Jane Harrison," Book 14 in the Harvard University Press "Revealing Antiquity" series, which supersede the biographical sketches available in earlier decades.)Like many of her works, "Art and Ritual" is available as a free pdf from archive.org (a Library of Congress website); a few (including this one) are available in Kindle editions (based, in this case, on a Project Gutenberg text). There are also no less than four competing editions of "Ancient Art and Ritual" for NOOK Books (although I have not taken the time to compare them). In "Ancient Art and Ritual," she used some of the insights (real or supposed) gained from her classical and anthropological studies to analyze the place of the arts in (despite the title), the "modern" world. (Mostly Britain, as it was just before the First World War.)Her basic thesis (much simplified) is that art, including visual and dramatic art, and ritual ("religion") were once united, expressing and evoking strong personal and communal emotions through the mode of imitation; and that the modern world had severed the connection, to its own considerable loss. She notes that she could have written the book with reference to India, or Medieval Europe, but argues that the modern world -- or at least the educated part at which the book was aimed -- felt closer to the ancient Greeks, so that the contrast was clearer. (One may doubt the extent to which this is now a compelling argument, but it made sense at the time.)If one takes her argument seriously, the temptation to apply it to, say, television, may be irresistible. However, if asked to list Harrison's major works, I would restrict my selection to three connected books: "Prolegomena to the Study of Greek Religion," first published in 1903, with various re-printings containing additional technical notes and some revisions of her views on particular issues; "Themis, a study of the social origins of Greek religion" ("With an excursus on the ritual forms preserved in Greek tragedy by Gilbert Murray and a chapter on the origin of the Olympic games by F.M. Cornford"), in 1912; and "Epilogomena to the Study of Greek Religion," published in 1921 (by which time she was cutting her connections to classical studies in favor of other interests, like Russian literature.)The first two volumes are massive studies, of which the first was the most successful with fellow-classicists in her own time. ("Themis" had to wait to the later twentieth century for belated recognition). "Epilogomena" is very short, and can't stand alone, being mostly limited to "reconsiderations" of (mainly) theoretical issues, but it is well worth reading. In these volumes, she attempted to go past the "barrier" erected by Homer and Athenian Tragedy, with their Olympian deities, and find the "real" roots of Greek ritual actions and religious feeling, particularly concerns for subsistence. In her view (shared by the so-called "Cambridge School"), it was the ritual which gave rise to the mythology, and the concepts of the gods, and not the other way around. Whether or not once comes away convinced, the argument is extremely interesting. "Prolegomena" in particular is packed with reflections on the "Lower Mythology" (daemons, and various types of local spirits, benevolent or malicious) usually ignored -- or deplored -- in older treatments of "Greek Religion.""Ancient Art and Ritual" (1913; corrected edition with some new bibliography, 1948) is something of a satellite to "Prolegomena" and "Themis," without the illustrations from ancient art, the edited Greek texts, and the careful documentation. It was originally published in the "Home University Library of Modern Knowledge," issued by Williams and Norgate (UK) and Henry Holt and Co. (US), in a volume roughly the size of mass-market paperback. So far as I know, "Ancient Art and Ritual," despite a fair number of reprintings, had little impact; the classicist who might have been most impressed by it, Gilbert Murray, was its editor. However, in 1926, one of Harrison's close friends, Hope Mirrlees (1887-1978; again, see her own Wikipedia article for details), published a fantasy novel, "Lud-in-the-Mist," with an epigraph by Harrison. The book, currently available in a very nice Kindle edition (besides out-of-print paperbacks) has a number of (mostly favorable) reviews on Amazon. From my perspective, the ideas about society, art, and religion embodied in the novel are in part a reflection on "Ancient Art and Ritual."

Anthony Jane Ellen Harrison was one of the great classical scholars of her time, at a time when women were scarce in academia. She had the respect of other scholars in her field too and was an inspiration to the next generations. She was far ahead of her time as a multi-disciplinarian bringing all her knowledge in various fields to bear in her works. This book is seminal for the ritual and art of ancient times.

This book is a scholarly read and Jane Harrison shows how man has always dealt with rituals to celebrate new life or some rite of passage. He could be seen enraptured in a dance or a song as he asks the gods to show mercy for rain, a healing or for food. She shows how these ancient rituals evolved into art forms such as choral readings, dance forms and even drama itself. Also, Greek sculpture was developed as a demure way to give homage to the gods. The one common thread behind all of the art forms was high emotional energy because the needs were so great. She then moves towards the premise that art is borne out of emotion and when man has a dire need, he becomes active and participatory. She then shifts to the artist himself and says he speaks when he is vexed or his feelings are deeply stirred. It is the artist’s duty to transfer those feelings into some medium and this expression will eventually be seen as a spoken truth whether done through writing, painting or drama. The artist normally has a keener emotion and though often perceived as somewhat removed or aloof from practical life, it is his responsibility to tell what he sees and feels.
