I know these guys and the predicaments they experience, and most readers will, too. I found out all kinds of random facts about things I never thought about before (Shakespeare, Edward de Vere, the Mayans, and lots of other stuff). As a female reader I was also struck by the glimpses this book repeatedly gave me into the modern male's mindset, how they view the world and what really matters to (many of) them. The plot is really compelling, too, and damn funny at times. I'm glad a sequel to this story is in the works and will certainly read more by this highly gifted writer.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant new author! By Aida James I'm impressed with this brilliant new author. I've started the book and can't wait to see how it finishes.

A few plot details stretched credulity but if you read as from the exagerrated viewpoint of the characters and suspend your disbelief, it's a fun ride. The story was a great way to start 2011 since the story is set just a few years in the future. All in all, I'd recommend the book as a quick read with a nice mix of how a couple of thirty-somethings in a kind of boring town interact with the larger sweep of history.

The motivation for choosing this study comes from this writer's curiosity regarding the origins of water baptism and the link between water baptism and Spirit baptism in relationship to the church and Christianity. From the time I began studying the Bible many years ago I have been passionate about wanting to trace how religious practices and beliefs in Judaism may align with contemporary Christian practices and beliefs. The origins of Christianity are permeated in ancient Jewish religious practices and beliefs. Yet many Christians lack information and therefore understanding about the Jewish legacy handed down to the church. Most Christians accept that water baptism is necessary to be a part of the Christian Church. They do not question who, what, when, how or why regarding the practice of water baptism. This writer intends to furnish information and argument supporting origins of water baptism. This project is largely written for contemporary Christians, but it is hoped that it will benefit all other serious inquirers of truth as well. It is the writer's proposal to furnish background necessary to articulate a knowledgeable answer to the question “What are the origins/roots of water baptism?” Archaic modes of ceremonial water rituals will be explored to assist Christians in understanding the underpinnings of the origins of Christian religious practices and beliefs. The list of works consulted, though not exhaustive, covers publications authored over nearly a century, which permits the author to explore scholarship on the timeless subject of origins of water rites. The writer's purpose for this study goes forth with the hope of spurring contemporary Bible-based Christians into exploring roots/origins of water baptism. The rite of water baptism (Acts 2:38) did not begin on the day of Pentecost when the church was formulated, as many Christians today believe. Water rites or baptism was a religious practice of Judaism before Christianity.

I loved this book By Amazon Customer I loved this book, because it helped me understand the importants of water baptism especailly when many Christian leaders are teaching that water baptism is not necessary. The author brings the element of water and how it was used in the purifications laws and requirements set forth by God, and given to Moses. Once you read this book, you will come to understand why Jesus the Son of God was baptized. Not for sin, and the need to repent, but to fullfil this law and requirement for purification not only being the Savior, but an High Priest. I would recommend this book for the knowledge it holds concering both baptism water and the Holy Spirit. The author has done a excellent work and its an easy read.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A pretty good read By Jonathan M. Fontenot The book is historically relevant and well written, but the author's personal theological preferences cloud the scene and produce convenient hermeneutics and very little real exegesis at all. I do not agree with all of the authors conclusions, but the study in history was worth the read.

When an old woman storms into the Rijksmuseum demanding the return of her painting, archivist Ruth Braams cannot quell her curiosity. Ruth delves into the history of the piece of looted Nazi art and discovers an enigmatic picture with a disturbing wartime provenance. It also appears that the elderly Lydia is not the only claimant and, against strict bureau regulations, Ruth endeavours to help strengthen her case. Days later, Ruth begins to receive sinister anonymous threats, warning her to stay away from Lydia and the painting. As the threats escalate, Ruth realizes that there must be far more to the painting’s popularity, and she enters a series of increasingly lethal adventures as she investigates its secret symbolism. . . . Why did Hitler want this picture? Who was its obscure creator? And who are the figures in the painting? In trying to answer these questions, Ruth plummets into a world of grasping ambition and blighted love, where art and occult science join forces to take a staggering leap into the future. ‘The Apothecary’s House’ is a brilliant evocation of Amsterdam that combines fascinating historical detail with a cast of sharply realised characters—a fast-paced, finely crafted, riveting mystery. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A nice long book that will keep you reading By Isabella K. Badenoch I picked this book up at the airport, never having heard of it, but the author had won the Silver Dagger award for his previous book and I have in the past liked authors that have won this award, so I bought it on a whim. It's not a completely easy read, as some of the reviewers of his previous book (Vienna Blood) have commented. His writing is sometimes stilted and he does use unusual phrasing and words (good to have a dictionary nearby!). BUT, the book is very readable and the storyline captivating. The book is a hefty 706 pages in paperback, but I didn't find it too long nor did I feel like skipping sections. The story is set in Amsterdam, the main character working at an art museum, specializing in repatriating artwork to their rightful heirs. She comes across a painting that is being contested by two possible owners and she get inextricably involved with one of them. That is when strange things begin to happen. The only negative comment I have is that the ending seemed somewhat rushed. After having spent a good 400-odd pages delivering the story and setting the scene, the ending took just under 100 pages. But this does not detract from the story in a major way.Although Mathews' other book, Vienna Blood, seems to have gotten very scathing reviews, after having read this book, I am quite interested in reading it myself.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Nice scene setting, but stiffly written with cardboard dialogue. By frumiousb I had high hopes of the Apothecary House. Some friends of mine had enjoyed it and I wanted to give his writing another chance after disliking the award-winning Vienna Blood. All I can say is that I will not be picking up a third book. The Apothecary's House was a fairly serious disappointment. The story was interesting enough. I live in Amsterdam, so I really enjoyed the little descriptions of the city. The plot had the potential to be fascinating (although it did not end up that way) and on paper Ruth Braams is a decent character.Unfortunately, I really had the feeling that Mathews was phoning it in when it came to executing the concept. The prose is very stiff, and Ruth never emerges behind her character eccentricities to become a real person. By the end of the book, I had a very difficult time caring about the conclusion. This might be a nice read for the airplane trip back after a visit to Amsterdam. I'm not sure that I would buy it new, however.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Would have been a good read set in a city I loved but sloppy contextual research put me off... By Natasha Gerson I liked the characters, I liked the descriptions (where they weren't too inaccurate) I would have liked this book on the whole... but... what a shame the author didn't bother to let someone from Amsterdam proofread it, apparently. Maybe I'm a stick in the mud in some of the research omissions, and I won't sum them all up. My family consists of many generations of Mokummers, and also I have affinity and maybe more than average insight into the accuracy of parts of the subject. I smile wrily at a protagonist relating that they ate well in Westerbork while in Amsterdam they were eating tulip bulbs...in 1942. I don't want to be pedantic. But some mistakes are just unforgivable. Mixing Dutch up with German is bad enough, when unintentional, but to have a Dutch person involved in war history and moving in with an old Jewish lady declaring herself happy to have acquired some more 'Lebensraum' is just unthinkable. Lebensraum is a highly volatile term for something completely different then what the author meant, namely something like headspace. The chambermaid at his hotel would have sufficed to check this with, any Dutch person who would have read it beforehand would have remarked on it. Especially in a book that holds some pretences of accurate detail, such as mentioning actual cases (Goudstikker et al) and lenghty historical descriptions, those things are a disrespect to the subject, even if the majority of readers, those elsewhere in the world won't notice. It also makes that I am no less likely to read a novel by the same author set in a place I don't know as well as Amsterdam...

Two Ordinary Americans. Fifty Innocent Lives. One Unforgettable Journey.

In early 1939, few Americans were thinking about the darkening storm clouds over Europe. Nor did they have much sympathy for the growing number of Jewish families who were increasingly threatened and brutalized by Adolf Hitler's policies in Germany and Austria.

But one ordinary American couple decided that something had to be done. Despite overwhelming obstacles—both in Europe and in the United States—Gilbert and Eleanor Kraus made a bold and unprecedented decision to travel into Nazi Germany in an effort to save a group of Jewish children. This is their story.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, May 2014: If you missed the highly praised HBO documentary 50 Children, you can get the whole story from this excellent chronicle by journalist Steven Pressman, who also wrote, directed, and produced the film. Gilbert and Eleanor Kraus were typical members of an affluent, educated Jewish community in Philadelphia in the 1930s; Gilbert was a lawyer, and Eleanor a bit of a shopaholic. Worried about what they were hearing from Europe by 1939, the Krauses set out to travel to Austria and Germany to save Jewish children from the advancing Nazis; they were not particularly religious or political and this was not an easy task in an era plagued by anti-Semitism and isolationism. But through careful readings of the law, loopholes in the visa-granting system, and plain old bravery, the Krauses managed to bring more than four dozen children to safety in the United States. Pressman, the Krauses’ grandson-in-law, used Eleanor Kraus’s unpublished diaries as well as photographs, documents, and interviews to recreate a historical moment and a heroic act. Like Oskar Schindler and his list, the Krauses and their 50 children will now never be forgotten. --Sara Nelson

From Booklist Rescues and escapes from Nazi persecution are augmented by this well-crafted account. Based on a family typescript inherited by Pressman’s wife, it describes a project taken on by her grandparents in 1939 to bring Jewish children out of Germany and to the U.S. Proposed to Gil Kraus, a Philadelphia lawyer, by a Jewish fraternal organization in which he was active, the plan entailed Kraus satisfying both American and German regulations and officialdom and ultimately traveling to Germany to select and chaperone 50 children across the Atlantic. His wife, Eleanor, wrote up her experience of the journey. Pressman’s extensive quotations of Eleanor’s account capture the immediacy of events, while his research into State Department communications with the Krauses contextualizes the principal challenge they faced, finding a legal loophole in the then-restrictive immigration laws. On the other side of the transaction, Pressman details Gil Kraus’ activities in Berlin and Vienna to collect his charges, whose own memories of their rescue and relocation to America Pressman also relays. Multimedia marketing, including an HBO documentary, will heighten the prominence of this deserving work. --Gilbert Taylor

Review “Both an extraordinary humanitarian act and a classic tale of American initiative and perseverance....A rich and rewarding read….Pressman paints a moving picture of the rescue.” (Wall Street Journal)“Excellent…. Pressman, the Krauses’ grandson-in-law, used Eleanor Kraus’s unpublished diaries as well as photographs, documents, and interviews to recreate a historical moment and a heroic act. Like Oskar Schindler and his list, the Krauses and their 50 children will now never be forgotten.” (Sara Nelson, Amazon Best Book of the Month Citation)“A remarkable book.” (Forbes)“The astonishing story of a Philadelphia couple’s resolve to help bring Jewish children out of Nazi-occupied Austria. . . .With a careful eye to detail and dialogue, Pressman vividly re-creates this epic rescue.” (Kirkus Reviews)“A brilliantly written book that takes the reader on a journey back in time. Yet, it is relevant today because Gil and Eleanor’s story proves that individuals with courage and strength can overcome the odds. … A very insightful read.” (Military Press)“[A] stirring account of determination against overwhelming odds….[Pressman’s] flowing narrative breathes life into the America and Europe of 1938-1939,….The whole makes for a story as troubling as it is inspirational.” (Publishers Weekly)“The portrait of the Krauses that emerges is one of incredible resourcefulness, perseverance, bravery, and motivation to save lives. Pressman’s deeply affecting account is a tribute to a couple whose heroic efforts were a beacon of light during a time of unremitting darkness for the Jewish people.” (Jewish Book Council)“Well-crafted….[A] deserving work.” (Booklist

Really Opened My Eyes By Joseph Oppenheim From my daughter: Everybody knows about the awful things Hitler and the Nazis did to the Jews, but I was shocked to find out that before concentration camps and murders began, Jews were given the option to leave Europe. Expecting someone to give up everything they have worked so hard for and leave their home with nothing, solely because they were Jewish, is horrible enough, but the fact that they couldn't find countries to take them in, sheds light on not just a problem with Europe, but the rest of the world. The US had allotted a certain amount of visas to give to Jews trying to leave, but only a small percentage were actually given out. I think this would be a great book to read for kids learning about the Holocaust. It gives a much better picture and world view of what happened, then just learning about how the Nazis killed millions of Jews. The Krauses story is truly remarkable and beyond inspiring. It makes me so sick to my stomach that there were Jews just like the Krauses in Europe (intelligent, hard working, generous, socially conscious, loving, and kind), that were put to death. Our country surely would have been better off if we would have given out more visas. The world could use more people like the Krauses.

44 of 44 people found the following review helpful. To Save One Life Is To Save The World Entire. To Save 50 Children is... By Kayla Rigney ... a Mitzvah that will extend for generations to come. (A Miztvah is a deed performed for one of the 613 religious reasons. In this case, it would be to not stand by idly -- in other words, to *act* --when a human life is in danger. [LEV 19:16])50 Children: One Ordinary American Couple's Extraordinary Rescue Mission Into The Heart Of Nazi Germany is based upon the 2013 HBO Documentary of the same name. And it's wonderful! It's the sort of book that inspires me to continue doing what I do, to speak out, to *act.* Mr. and Mrs. Kraus risked their lives to travel to Nazi Germany in *1939* to rescue 50 Jewish Children and bring them to America. To say that they were brave is an understatement. The Kraus' American citizenship was a only transparent veil of protection, because they were Jewish -- and they understood this. They understood that they could easily be targets of Nazi violence. Yet, this ordinary couple managed an extraordinary thing: they managed to get 50 Jewish children out of Nazi Germany at a time when the United States severely limited entry of people of Jewish faith. Amazing.History is rewritten over and over. We forget that in 1939 America was isolationist -- and anti-Semetic. The German-American Bund was Hitler's Nazi arm in the United States. Rallies were held across the country but especially in New York State. These American-bred fascists spread head on the radio, via anti-Semetic newsletters and in newspapers. My mother, who was 17 in 1939, saw ads admonishing people not to shop in Jewish stores. Politicians came out in support of Hitler. It was a frightening time. And it was the *only* time that the Krauses could have succeeded in doing what they did. The doors of escape were closing around the Jews of Europe even as the only American Kindertransport left Nazi Germany... The story of the rescue of the 50 Children is enthralling and sad and at all times told simply and well.I cannot recommend 50 Children highly enough. It's a great read! Give it to your friends. Give it to your family. Give it to your local library. Above all, give it to your teenagers, so that they can learn that Good can be affected by just one -- or, in this case just two plus Louis Levine.50 Children gets five stars and a cherished place on my bookshelf forever more.

37 of 38 people found the following review helpful. vivid and moving By Robert D. Harmon It's an extraordinary story, not least because it was on the initiative of one Jewish couple, Gil and Eleanor Kraus, who left a comfortable Philadelphia home to rescue 50 children from Nazi-held Vienna. To do so, they had to navigate US immigration barriers -- somehow he found 50 open visa slots under a stiff quota -- and then, in Berlin and Vienna, work through red tape at the Gestapo and in US diplomatic offices. This couple were themselves Jewish, and thus had to endure a considerable sense of menace during complex and delicate negotiations and interviews with the authorities, the children's parents, and the children themselves, of whom only 50 could go.The story, drawn from contemporary accounts and Eleanor Kraus' private memoir, is vivid enough, and the prose is fast-moving and concise, never dull. Indeed, even though the reader knows the outcome -- the book cover makes it obvious enough -- the story still raises doubt as to whether this quest will come off or not. And some of the twists are unexpected: for instance, the couple faced considerable opposition from the US State Department, which was enforcing immigration barriers raised by a xenophobic Congress, and even some opposition from the Jewish community in the US, who didn't want to risk trouble. We also learn that, while the German Jewish community had gone through gradually-escalating cruelty over the years, the Austrian Jewish community was hit with it all at once, when Germany seized Austria in 1938. The couple even has an unexpected encounter with Ribbentrop, the Nazi foreign minister. In all, a taut, intriguing, and ultimately inspiring story of what one couple could do despite opposition and obstruction, and it's a fresh account of the Holocaust period. Highest recommendation.

Lost Capital, by Peter Wahl

Review "This seductive rendering of America's self-made man motif modernizes Fitzgerald's fable, crafting in Guy a likable yet naïve mirror of Gatsby. In so doing, the author utilizes an original voice and skillfully captures the numbness and amorality of a society in which elegant parties mask debasement, and honesty is crushed by a hungry bottom line." -Publishers Weekly----"It isn't until the end that readers will learn the secret past of Ivan Vissar, but it's worth taking the time to get there." -San Francisco Book Review

About the Author Peter M. Wahl is a pharmacoepidemiologist residing in Boston, Massachusetts. This is his first novel.

Capital Punishment By Cody Fenech Mr. Wahl has done a great job of crafting intriguing yet relatable characters, particularly in the case of Guy Baxter . Infectiously charismatic, you'll find yourself rooting for Guy, even when his hubris begins to get the best of him. Only a decade removed from the Dot Com Bubble, I'm sure many readers will find themselves sucked into the all too truthful tale of Lost Capital.Heres hoping for a sequel!

Wahl Good narrative and believable dialogue pull the story along in an intriguing and suspenseful manner, at a rapid rate. Just when you think you have something figured out or where the story is leading, you're pleasantly surprised. Well done. I would recommend it.

Ebook PDF Zero Six Bravo: The Explosive True Story of How 60 Special Forces Survived Against an Iraqi Army of 100,000, by Damien Lewis

Damien Lewis has spent twenty years reporting from conflict zones around the world. Zero Six Bravo--a Sunday Times number one bestseller--tells the story of "sixty special forces against 100,000--a feat of arms to take the breath away." (Frederick Forsythe) They were branded as cowards and accused desertion. But nothing could be further from the truth. Ten years on, the story of these sixty men can finally be told. In March 2003, M Squadron--an SBS unit with SAS embeds--was sent 1,000 kilometers behind enemy lines on a true mission impossible, to take the surrender of the 100,000-strong Iraqi Army 5th Corps, an operation so risky it earned the nickname â??Operation No Return' right out of the gate. Caught in a ferocious ambush by Saddam Hussein's Fedayeen, plus the awesome firepower of the 5th Corps' heavy armor, and with eight of their vehicles bogged in Iraqi swamps, M Squadron launched a desperate bid to escape, inflicting massive damage on their enemies. Running low on fuel and ammunition, outnumbered, and outgunned, the elite operators destroyed sensitive information and prepared for death or capture as the Iraqis closed their deadly trap. Zero Six Bravo contains previously unpublished information detailing the essential involvement of American troops in this astonishing military feat. Zero Six Bravo recounts in vivid and compelling detail the most desperate battle fought by British and allied Special Forces trapped behind enemy lines since World War Two.

Review "Sixty Special Forces against 100,000--a feat of British arms to take the breath away."―Frederick Forsyth"Suspenseful and well-written... Lewis does an excellent job of maintaining tension... he vividly recounts the soldiers' fatigue, stress and fear."―Kirkus Reviews"Sent against overwhelming odds by bad intelligence and wishful thinking, the sixty men of British Special Forces' M Squadron found themselves surrounded by Iraq's 5th Corps, 100,000 of Saddam's finest, plus thousands of fanatical Fedayeen militia. Damien Lewis' true story of the courage and valor of the fierce warriors who guard our civilization is mesmerizin. Zero Six Bravo is an absolute must read."―Stephen Coonts, author of Pirate Alley"One of the best accounts of a behind-enemy-lines mission ever."―Phil Campion, ex-SAS and author of Born Fearless"A dramatic story that few ever knew about."―Metro"The most dangerous mission of the Second Gulf War."―Sun

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Steve Grayling was crouched in a hidden position, the ink-black desert night deathly quiet all around him. Or at least it had been until the last few minutes of his sentry duty, which was scheduled to last from 0400 hours until first light. But then the first of the animals had appeared. In the open, empty quiet of the Iraqi desert his senses had been heightened, his hearing tuned in to the utter absence of life. The slightest noise would signify movement, which meant something living was out there, which in turn might signal danger. But the bone-dry rock and sand had offered little to remind him that he was still on earth and not on some barren, lifeless moonscape. That was how it had been for the first ninety minutes of his watch – until, from out of nowhere, the herd of goats had appeared. The hollow tinkling of the animal’s bell sounded alien and alarming as it beat out an eerie rhythm across the bare stillness. It seemed impossible that any four-legged creature could survive in a place so empty of water and vegetation – yet here the goats were. And with the scraggly creatures had come the inevitable two-legged escort. Everything about the desert night was black. The moon was hanging low on the horizon, and above it the stars formed a skein of brightness that stretched across the heavens, but still the light intensity at ground level had to be no more than 10 millilux. Under such illumination the terrain all around him was so devoid of features as to form a flat, uniform void. It was only the goats that stood out, their erect forms casting long, leggy moon-shadows. The white splotches on their coats glowed silvery bright, like patches of polished chain mail set into a suit of dark armour. As for the goat-herder, he appeared giantlike, casting mighty distorted shadows as he walked, using a long stick to steer the herd to wherever it was he was heading.Steve Grayling hunched over the hulking great form of a .50-calibre heavy machine-gun, its barrel tracing the herd’s every move. He’d long lost the feeling in his hands. Come nightfall, the temperature plummeted in the desert, and he was stiff from the cold. Ice had seeped into his every joint and limb, yet still his frozen fingers gripped resolutely the twin handles of his weapon. He was minutely adjusting his aim, and poised to unleash a barrage of rounds onto the target – that’s if the goat-herder made the fatal mistake of stumbling onto their position. He hoped to hell that moment never came, for then he’d have to decide whether or not to open fire. Steve faced a horrible dilemma; if he were to open fire it would be against all the rules of engagement and he might well face the full force of law for doing so – for the goat-herder was no more than an adolescent kid.Killing kids: that wasn’t what he had imagined doing when he’d gone for selection into Special Forces. Back then he’d fancied joining the elite, the few who dare, so he could take the fight to the bad guys, Britain’s foremost terrorist enemies. Steve was one of the veterans of the Squadron, one of the ‘old and the bold’. Back when he’d joined, Britain’s chief enemy had been the IRA, and he’d never for one moment imagined himself preparing to unleash a barrage of armour-piercing rounds against a kid.But if that goat-herder did blunder into their position and Steve didn’t open fire, then he had few doubts about the consequences. They’d have to consider their mission well and truly blown, and to expect the enemy to come after them relentlessly and in massive and deadly strength. After all, one of their units had already got shot up and hunted by Iraqi forces across miles of trackless desert – prompting a series of battles from which its men had been very lucky to escape with their lives. The Squadron was a good 150 kilometres into Iraq by now. Although their route northwards lay through the empty wastes of the Ninawa Desert, due east lay the heavily populated area of Bayji, one of Saddam Hussein’s key strongholds. During the pre-mission briefings they’d been warned that the population of Bayji – both the military based there and the militias – were fanatically loyal to the ‘Great Leader’ Saddam. No doubt about it – if Goat Boy saw them and raised the alarm, the Squadron was going to be in a whole world of trouble. The nearest animals had to be a good hundred yards away, but with every second they seemed to be drawing closer. With Grayling’s open-topped vehicle shrouded in camouflage netting, and his face caked in several days’ worth of camouflage cream mixed with dried sweat and dirt, he figured the goat-herder would have to be right on top of their position before he noticed anything. He’d likely have to peer long and hard into the bed of the wadi before the indistinct blobs might resolve themselves into the recognizable shapes of more than twenty four-wheel-drive vehicles and quad bikes. By that time Goat Boy would be just yards away from the gaping muzzle of Steve’s weapon. He’d be opening fire at point-blank range.A round unleashed from the .50-cal would leave the muzzle at a velocity of 2,910 feet per second. It would rip a cigar-sized hole where it hit, but exit leaving a gaping wound the size of a giant frying-pan. It was bad enough thinking of it doing that to a fully grown man, let alone to the body of an Iraqi kid, and Steve wanted nothing more than for those goats to piss right off out of there.Momentarily, he flicked his eyes away from the approaching threat, to do a visual check on their position. As the sentry for Six Troop of M Squadron, he had the northwestern segment of their position to keep watch over. His arc of responsibility ran from 12 o’clock around to 4 o’clock, 12 o’clock being due north. To either side and humped along the jagged rim of the wadi he could just make out the silhouettes of two of the other sentries, the blokes from Four and Five Troop. Like him, they were hunched motionless over their vehicle-mounted weapons, the body of each of their wagons hidden in the cover of the dry riverbed. He had to assume the other sentries had heard, if not seen, the goats from where they were positioned. But it was towards his arc of fire that the foremost animals were heading, wandering across the flat desert and taking the occasional nibble at God only knew what. Over the three days that the Squadron had been pushing through the Iraqi wilderness, Steve had started to think that nothing could grow in this sun-blasted wasteland.Clearly, the goats knew otherwise.Steve shifted his gaze further east, towards the centre of the sheer-sided wadi. There sat the vehicles of their Headquarters Troop, the distinctive whippy antennae marking out the signals wagon. The HQ Troop was surrounded by the protective firepower of the sixty-odd men of the Squadron – though all apart from the handful on sentry were sleeping the sleep of the dead right now.Steve had to assume that Reggie, their Squadron OC, was oblivious to the threat, but there was little point in alerting him to the goat-herder’s presence, for the decision to pull the trigger would be Steve’s and Steve’s alone. If the herd kept its distance, the shepherd would live. If the animals came too close and the goat-herder got wise to M Squadron’s presence, Steve would have to decide in that split second whether to open fire and kill him. There was no chance of trying to capture the little blighter. By the time Steve had made it out of the wagon – fighting his way through the camo-netting as he went – and clambered up the steep, rocky side of the wadi, the kid would be long gone.Regular soldiers in the British Army tended to be told when to eat, sleep or take a piss. Often, only the senior ranks carried a map, and the riflemen knew little about where they were going or what the bigger picture might be. Special Forces soldiering was a whole different ball game. Operators like Grayling were given the entire sketch of the mission, and they were sent out to find their own way and achieve the objective using their own drive and initiative.Decisions were based on intuition and past operational experience, and Steve had plenty of that to draw on. He’d done several missions serving in joint SAS–SBS units, and on many of those they’d been outnumbered and outgunned. Those ops had given men like Grayling a baptism of fire at the hard and brutal end of soldiering. But the trouble was, Grayling had no experience to draw on whatsoever when it came to killing kids.He had no idea exactly how long he’d spent on stag. He couldn’t risk a glance at his watch. The slightest movement might draw the goat-herder’s eye, plus the faintly luminous dial would shine out like a beacon in the dark. All he knew was that the horizon to the east was brightening slightly, which had to mean that first light – 0600 – couldn’t be that far away.Steve noticed a figure moving silently through the shadows of the dry riverbed. It was the Six Troop Sergeant Major. He paused to wake one of Steve’s fellow Six Troop operatives. Dave Saddler was scheduled to take over from him on watch. He was lying comatose on the dirt next to one of the ‘Pinkies’, as they called their open-topped desert-adapted Land Rovers. You always woke the next guy a good fifteen minutes early, so he had time to get some food and liquid on board before taking over sentry. He could hardly set his watch to wake himself at the right time – for even the faintest bleep-bleep-bleep or the brrrr of an alarm’s vibrations could travel a great distance on the still desert air. So one bloke had to stay alert and organize the sentry rotation, waking the others at their allotted times. With Dave being wakened, Grayling figured it had to be around 0545, which meant that he had fifteen minutes in which to make the call. He didn’t want to leave that decision to Dave, one of the youngest and least experienced operators in the Squadron. Steve had got him on his team in part so he could mentor him through the coming mission.Killing kids definitely wasn’t the way to get him started.

However, these special operators overcame bureaucratic failure in a manner that is, frankly, stunning. If Hollywood made a movie of this adventure, people would say Rambo is believable in comparison. Hats off to some of the world's great warriors. The real measure of these men is that they didn't go after the "intelligence" pukes when they safely returned without loss of life.

Herzog: (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition), by Saul Bellow

Amazon.com Review A novel complex, compelling, absurd and realistic, Herzog became a classic almost as soon as it was published in 1964. In it Saul Bellow tells the tale of Moses E. Herzog, a tragically confused intellectual who suffers from the breakup of his second marriage, the general failure of his life and the specter of growing up Jewish in the middle part of the 20th century. He responds to his personal crisis by sending out a series of letters to all kinds of people. The letters in total constitute a thoughtful examination of his own life and that which has occurred around him. What emerges is not always pretty, but serves as gritty foundation for this absorbing novel.

Review "A feast of language, situations, characters, ironies, and a controlled moral intelligence . . . Bellow’s rapport with his central character seems to me novel writing in the grand style of a Tolstoy—subjective, complete, heroic." —Chicago Tribune

"Herzog has the range, depth, intensity, verbal brilliance, and imaginative fullness—the mind and heart—which we may expect only of a novel that is unmistakably destined to last." —Newsweek

"A masterpiece" —The New York Times Book Review

147 of 153 people found the following review helpful. A comic masterpiece By Mark B. Friedman I was prompted to write this because most of the reviewers published here miss the plain fact that Herzog is extremely funny. Herzog writes letters. He writes manic, crazy, poignant, inspired letters to people both living and dead: to his friends, to his shrink, to his divorce lawyer, to the President of the United States, and to Heidegger, to Schrodinger, to Nietzche and to Willie Sutton. It is, of course, one of Saul Bellow's best novels, written at the height of his carrer, which would place it somewhere on the list of the Top 10 or 20 best American novels of the 20th century. Herzog is worth both reading and re-reading, but the book is clearly not for everyone. It is as personal, realistic, and autobiographical as The Adventures of Augie March, but it is significantly more difficult to read in terms of both style and content. It is probably less accessible than Augie, the work of a maturer artist. Readers should expect neither a conventional plot or a chronological narrative, although the book is highly structured and is brought to a very satisfying and almost inspirational resolution as Herzog regains his equilibrium, which he loses to such comic effect in the early going.

71 of 72 people found the following review helpful. Masterpiece, but no easy read By Steven Reynolds The middle-aged Moses Herzog is a notable literary-historical academic, the father of two children from two failed marriages, and the lover of a string of exotic women. His most recent wife, the Catholic convert Madelaine, has lately left him for his best friend. Herzog is lost. As he reflects on the continuing disaster that constitutes his life, and the choices which led him to this crisis, he begins writing unsent letters - to friends and family, colleagues and enemies, to famous figures both living a dead. As Bellow himself has noted, Herzog is a man who, in the agony of suffering, finds himself to be his own most penetrating critic. He re-examines his life by re-enacting all the roles he took seriously - the professor, the son, the brother, the lover, the father, the husband, the avenger, the intellectual. It's an attempt to divest himself of these personae, and when he has dismissed them, there comes a pause - a moment of grace - which is infinitely more valuable than his trying to invent everything for himself, or accepting human inventions, the collective errors, by which he's lived. He's decided to go through a process of jettisoning or lightening. The effect is that this is something the reader shares. Bellow has the capacity in his novels to cover the smallest timeframe - a matter of days, or even hours in some cases - and yet through the subtle interleaving of flashbacks, meditations and philosophical musings, cover a vast amount of intellectual and emotional ground. His novels are vast in scope yet humanly scaled. The philosophical is made real by instantiation. "Herzog" is a wonderful example of this, and it also contains two of the most compassionate moments I've ever read: Herzog's reaction to a court scene in which the death of an abused child is recounted; and the subsequent scene in which Herzog witnesses, through the window of the marital home from which he's been banished, his best friend and betrayer bathing Herzog's own child. Bellow's genius is to take these moments, one horrifying and one tender, and make them emblematic - give them real cultural, historical implication - without losing for a moment the convincing personal immediacy they have for the characters living through them. That's quite an achievement, and it's why Bellow's novels can be so intellectually rich and so viscerally touching at precisely the same time.

59 of 60 people found the following review helpful. Don't give up half way through By Amazon Customer Half way through this book. I shared some of the doubts expressed by other reviewers. Yes it is well written, but it appeared to be too narrow in its focus. A book whose sole topic is the protagonist's ego is hard to sustain for 340 pages. It cried out for social or political contexts into which the eccentric character could be absorbed. However all my early doubts were dealt with as the book progressed. His love for his daughter, brother and mother give Herzog greater depth and the reader starts to realise that Moses is not just a self-pitying, self obsessive. He is a man out of his depth , an intellectual in an anti-intellectual age. He is a Jew with a long family history of suffering, a "schooling in grief" yet even this proud history of struggle seems trivial because as Herzog notes: "What happened during the War abolished Father Herzog's claim to exceptional suffering". This is one of many aspects of personal history that troubles MosesThe early chapters lay the foundations for the wonderful latter parts of the book. Herzog is one of the most extraordinary literary creations of modern times. Bellow has created a multi-layered madman, pathetic yet loveable, a man of great intellect; solipsistic, moving, pedantic, gentle and above all believable. One moment he is plotting to murder the wife he loathes; the next he is showing the depth of his love for his daughter; then he writes to Nietszche telling the long dead philosopher that he is lying in a hammock in rural Massachusetts. He also writes to God, Heidegger, Eisenhower, ex-lovers and many of the personal and professional rivals he wishes to settle scores with. These letters (never posted), like the wife's one legged lover and Herzog's monkey kissing friend add much dark humour to what is often a very serious and moving narrative. This is a difficult, intense novel, but well worth the effort.

The uncensored autobiography of legendary gold and platinum record music producer and book publishing mogul, Tony Rose, NAACP Image Award winner, tells you how in a R-rated, due to violence, sexual abuse, language, rape, drugs and rage style. In a riveting, makes you wanna holler... searing indictment of America in the "benign neglect" of a dog-eat-dog world, where the alpha dog preys on the weak in Roxbury/Boston's Whittier Street Housing Projects, where Black males going to the lockup becomes a passé, rite-of-passage to manhood. His one-boy heroic campaign to eradicate child rape in the projects almost cost him his life, if not for the final intervention by a streetwise Mafia father-man, who teaches his Man-child how to hustle on an even grander scale. His careening life-and-death course between the criminal underworld and a caring world for America's underclass, represented by a hustler father, scoutmaster, nuns and priest, military, business leader and a transformation, that leaves you holding on to your pants. Finally, Tony Rose gives us concrete steps to become part of the solution through his newly found foundation for disadvantaged youth in the projects, ghettos and rural reaches before a new generation of thugs emerge. America is indebted to Mr. Rose for writing this biting, brutally-honest, wake-up call masterpiece. - Roland Barksdale-Hall, Librarian, Black Caucus of the American Library Association (BCALA), Community Activist and Author of The African American Family's Guide to Tracing Our Roots: Healing, Understanding and Restoring Our Families

One White Review By Its My Opinion Interesting bookPart III "70% of white america demonizes african americans as animals just so they can practice segregation, discrimination, inequality, police injustice, political injustice and economic injustice against black people"

By Tprice You must read America The Black Point of View...This book answers many questions I have had over the years about black ghettos, the overall black mentality and also the mentality of the white diaspora. I have not read anything as raw and in my face as the delivery of this book. I was jolted upward the entire time I read this masterful work of truth. Sometimes the truth hurts, but it was necessary to read what so many of us have been denying for too long. This book is saying so many poignant things. One thing that stood out to me was that a lot of behavior that we see among blacks, especially in ghettos and low income neighborhoods, stems from the evil that was done to us by white people for hundreds of years, including the years preceding the trans-Atlantic slave trade. That is one of the hard truths in this book, among many others. I was impressed with how Mr. Rose laid out his theses on various topics throughout the book. After finishing this book, I was left to re-examine my own thought processes regarding our people and also the white diaspora. I am guilty of prejudging without understanding pathology. This book has given me a better understanding of history and how history has affected and infected generations of our society at large. It's truly and eye-opening read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating little book. By Jerry Saperstein A long time ago, I lived in the Twin Cities and frequented Dudley Riggs’ Brave New Workshop (BNW). I hadn’t thought of the venue in years and was pleasantly surprised to learn that one the authors had purchased the operation in 1997 and that it continues to this day. In fact, this book is about how a husband and wife expanded a satirical theater into the area of essentially teaching motivation and innovation to corporate and institutional clients. John Sweeney is the primary voice here and I was reminded of a regional trait in the Upper Midwest of a natural humility. Though “I” is a frequently used pronoun here, I never got the sense the Sweeney was preening. As in improvisational theatre where performers must conjure up scenes on a moment’s notice, this is a book intended to train business and organization employees how to innovate, essentially, by letting their imaginations run without fear or limitation. This is an unusually interesting entry in this genre and I am somewhat at a loss when it comes to providing a one or two word description. It is a self-help book in one way, an inspirational or motivational book in another, a how-to tome and more. It is intended to help the reader open their mind to new ways to innovate and, frankly, I think it does that, though I can’t quite explain how it manages those disparate tasks. Very much a singular statement, it is very much worth reading.Jerry

Normally I shy away fron 'self-help' books and the like, but this one seemed to focus on the issues I was facing and decided to give it a read. I am glad I did. The authors lead you step by step, through personal experiences, things they have witnessed and other means to deliver a clear path towards your goals.Make no mistake, the solutions they propose are not simple. They require dedication and awareness. At no point do they say that things will be easy. but they do show you that they CAN be accomplished. The writing is direct and offers reasons for every topic they consider important. If you need a guide on how to move forward, or even just how to keep your motivation at peak levels then this book is a top read. Very impressed with the knowledge of the authors and the way they present it. Highly recommended.

Thompson I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and examining how different approaches to innovation can be made. Many people only associate innovation with technology and this book reframes our predetermined thoughts of what and what isn't innovation. From this book, I have used an innovation mindset in a variety of perspectives (personal and professional) and learned to approach situations and solutions in a completely different way. This book is very easy to read and mixed with a variety of stories and lessons that the authors have personally experienced. An easy and enjoyable read.
