From master storyteller and New York Times bestselling Historian H. W. Brands comes the definitive biography of a visionary and transformative president In his magisterial new biography, H. W. Brands brilliantly establishes Ronald Reagan as one of the two great presidents of the twentieth century, a true peer to Franklin Roosevelt. Reagan conveys with sweep and vigor how the confident force of Reagan’s personality and the unwavering nature of his beliefs enabled him to engineer a conservative revolution in American politics and play a crucial role in ending communism in the Soviet Union. Reagan shut down the age of liberalism, Brands shows, and ushered in the age of Reagan, whose defining principles are still powerfully felt today.      Reagan follows young Ronald Reagan as his ambition for ever larger stages compelled him to leave behind small-town Illinois to become first a radio announcer and then that quintessential public figure of modern America, a movie star. When his acting career stalled, his reinvention as the voice of The General Electric Theater on television made him an unlikely spokesman for corporate America. Then began Reagan’s improbable political ascension, starting in the 1960s, when he was first elected governor of California, and culminating in his election in 1980 as president of the United States.     Employing archival sources not available to previous biographers and drawing on dozens of interviews with surviving members of Reagan’s administration, Brands has crafted a richly detailed and fascinating narrative of the presidential years. He offers new insights into Reagan’s remote management style and fractious West Wing staff, his deft handling of public sentiment to transform the tax code, and his deeply misunderstood relationship with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, on which nothing less than the fate of the world turned.       Reagan is a storytelling triumph, an irresistible portrait of an underestimated politician whose pragmatic leadership and steadfast vision transformed the nation.

Jensen Brands manages to present a single volume biography of Reagan with the same gripping format (short chapters and small divisions within) and quick narrative flow as his other excellent biographies. If you are new to studying Reagan, I would recommend this book as one of the best single volume introductions, with a major caveat I mention below. If you have studied Reagan more in depth, there won’t be much new here, certainly nothing major, though it is still a good read.As Brands flows through Reagan’s life, he spends more time where needed (6 chapters are devoted to the Reykjavik summit, also see "Reagan at Reykjavik" by Ken Adelman), but still manages to include brief passages concerning a myriad of other issues that were not at the fore of Reagan’s agenda, but were a part of his presidency nonetheless. The briefest inclusion is Brand’s treatment of Reagan’s views on apartheid, coming in at a mere paragraph and less than half a page. Receiving somewhat more attention are Reagan’s efforts regarding AIDS (a few pages), immigration and other peripheral issues. The major issues, of course, receive far more attention, such as Reagan’s economic agenda and his efforts to sell it to the American people and wavering Democrats. Iran-Contra also receives its fair amount of attention, even including the investigation into the 90s and the embarrassing testimony offered by a Reagan who had lost virtually all memories of that time of his presidency.Brands seemed to linger far longer than is necessary for a work of this type on the alleged ‘October Surprise’ concern during the 1980 campaign and the highly conjectural conspiracy theories that individuals tied to Reagan’s campaign exerted influence to prevent the release of the hostages in Iran. Nothing will ever be believed by every individual, but this conspiracy theory has such a small following and little basis in actual evidence that his inclusion of it felt forced and its lengthy analysis felt drawn out simply for the sake of appearing more evenhanded. Also, while Brands presents an effective narrative of Reagan’s presidency, his efforts on his governorship fall a little flat (see "Governor Reagan" by Lou Cannon), and the brevity with which he discussed the pivotal 1976 campaign is a mystery (see "Reagan's Revolution" by Craig Shirley), as is his effectively skipping the years 1977-1979 which are crucial in order to understand Reagan and try to get in his head (see "Rendezvous with Destiny" by Craig Shirley). Reagan's radio addresses during this period are one of the best insights available to truly understand the man (see "Reagan, In His Own Hand" edited by Kiron Skinner and Annelise Anderson).Brands efforts to be evenhanded are admirable, and while no author of any biography ever has nor ever will achieve this with perfection, Brands does manage to come close. This is particularly evident in Brands inclusion of statements from various members of Reagan’s administration, such as Don Regan, who became embittered towards some administration members and especially Nancy Reagan. Statements from such individuals, revealing inner workings of the presidency, present both sides of an argument in a way that at least seems to minimize the bias, and at least point out the bias when it is apparent. That said, I wish Brands had included more statements from a wider array of administration officials. He seems to focus on a select few, such as Regan. While I feel the positives outweigh the negatives in this volume, the most glaring weakness nearly tipped the scales. Ronald Reagan’s faith was vital to him, yet Brands rarely makes mention of it, and only addresses it specifically more than half way into the book, on page 404, and then he does so only briefly and, frankly, rather incorrectly. Perhaps the most outrageous statement in the book is Brand’s assertion that “casual observers and even people close to him might have wondered sometimes whether he had any religion at all.” My jaw dropped at that statement, knowing what a great man of faith Reagan was. Brands only mentions in passing that Reagan didn’t attend church due to security reasons, which is true, yet he doesn’t mention how much it pained Reagan not to attend services. Reagan’s son, Michael, tells of a flight he had with his father on Air Force One shortly before Easter in 1988. The president began counting on his fingers and when Michael asked what he was doing, Reagan responded “I’m counting the months until I’ll be out of office and able to attend church again.” Indeed, Reagan was so eager that that Easter weekend he decided to attend Easter services at a small church near his ranch (for more on Reagan’s faith, and it’s crucial important throughout his life, see “God and Ronald Reagan” by Paul Kengor, “Hand of Providence: The Strong and Quiet Faith of Ronald Reagan” by Mary Beth Brown, or “The Faith of Ronald Reagan”, also by Mary Beth Brown).Reagan’s faith was pivotal to understanding his crusade against Communism (see “The Crusader” by Paul Kengor and “Ronald Reagan and His Quest to Abolish Nuclear Weapons” by Paul Lettow), for its very foundations were, in Reagan’s eyes, a crusade of the faithful against Godless communism. To Reagan, religion and faith were the core driving factors of the greatest accomplishments of his presidency. No mention is made of the book that inspired Reagan as a child, “That Printer of Udell’s”, which he himself referred to throughout his life as having been a major influence on him. Furthermore, Reagan’s faith was crucial to him during his recovery from his assassination attempt (see “Rawhide Down” by Del Quentin Wilber for a gripping account of those few days in March, as well as the role of Reagan’s faith during that time). My own relative served with Reagan during his time as governor in California, and spent a significant amount of time alone with Reagan during the late 60s and early 70s. My own interviews with him have revealed the depth of Reagan’s faith, as he inquired regularly concerning my relatives faith, similar to his own, and they often discussed their bone deep convictions and prayed together to seek the Lord’s guidance. Indeed, while Brands mentions Reagan’s struggle with abortion laws as governor of California, he makes no mention that when Reagan felt driven to make sure he was on the right side of this moral issue, he spent a large amount of time in his office praying and reading his Bible. One of Reagan’s oft repeated phrases was that he valued looking up (to God) more than ahead (to those around him) for strength. He wrote to a friend in 1973 that his “faith was unshakeable” and shared with them the aforementioned axiom he had ascribed to his whole life (see “Reagan: A Life in Letters” by Kiron Skinner, p. 278).In sum, the failure of Brands to fully grasp the role of faith in Reagan’s life and convey this in his biography cost him a full star in my review, dropping it from 4 to 3. Still, I enjoyed this book thoroughly, even though I learned nothing new of any consequence. Brands has produced what I could recommend as an introductory biography to Reagan with mention of the one caveat regarding his treatment of Reagan’s faith. Overall, an enjoyable and exciting read due to its fast pace and narrative style.

By Patrick McCormack Finally, a well written straight forward biography of one of the most interesting men of the late 20th.Like most who came of age during the Carter-Reagan years, I learned of these men through a filter of hate -- sometimes for Carter, often for Reagan. Our national media is a disgrace, moving right past the story to the vitriol, President after President. This book tells the man's story, from his youth, to his death. The writing is clear and informative, and the author shows the man, not the myth. The result is a good book about a great man.Note I did not say a perfect man, or an icon, or a saint. Those would be boring books to read. I have read Morris, and I have read Noonan, and this book betters both by far, and adds a clear eye. This is a great book to read and informative for anyone, even someone stunted by the media of the age, and their dark tellings of Presidents they hated.

I can still remember my parents and others saying how much they appreciated Reagan, and that they were sad to see him go. Over the years I've learned a few things about Reagan by reading or listening to his speeches. I haven't read much else, but am glad to be "schooled" by H. W. Brands in his new biography, "Reagan: The Life." While I do appreciate Reagan, it didn't seem like Brands painted too rosy a picture of him; Brands was fair in my opinion.First of all, the book is well written. There are quite a few details (names, locations, dates, etc.), but Brands writes in such a way that the details don't bog down the reading. I haven't read anything by Brands before, but having read this one, I think I'll seek out more of his work! Here and there the book slowed down a bit (in my opinion), but over all I enjoyed reading it very much. It read more like a story than a textbook. Note: it is BIG - my copy has 737 pages of the story, followed by around 50 pages of end notes. It's not a weekend read, but it is worth working through.Secondly, the book basically follows Reagan's life. The first two chapters cover the first 22 years of Reagan's life (starting in Tampico, Illinois, Feb. 6, 1911). The next section of the book (around 100 pages) talks about his years in California (1935-1962) where he worked in Hollywood, with the Screen Actors Guild, and for General Electric. His time as governor of California and his political life up to 1980 is the topic of chapters 16 through 32. Reagan's two terms as President take up pages 239-706. The last short part of the book (p. 705-737) covers the rest of his life (to his death in 2004).The only disappointment I had with this book is that it spends very little time discussing Reagan's first years and his last years. I realize it is a minor critique, but I was hoping to learn more about Reagan as a child and a young man.Aside from the minor critique, I wholeheartedly recommend this book! It was engaging enough for me that I underlined in it, took some notes, and will no doubt refer to it again in the (near!) future. Bravo to H. W. Brands for this work on one great American President.

*Includes pictures *Includes accounts of fighting between the Luftwaffe and the Allies *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading *Includes a table of contents “My Luftwaffe is invincible…And so now we turn to England. How long will this one last — two, three weeks?” – Hermann Goering, June 1940 The Third Reich's Luftwaffe began World War II with significant advantages over other European air forces, playing a critical role in the German war machine's swift, powerful advance. By war's end, however, the Luftwaffe had been decimated by combat losses and crippled by poor decisions at the highest levels of military decision-making, and it proved unable to challenge Allied air superiority despite a last-minute upsurge in German aircraft production. Given its unique strengths and distinctive weaknesses by the personal quirks of the men who developed it, the Luftwaffe initially overwhelmed the more conservative, outdated military aviation of other countries. Its leaders embraced such concepts as the dive-bomber, which proved both utterly devastating and extremely useful for supporting the sweeping, powerful movements of Blitzkrieg, while other martial establishments rejected dive-bombers as impractical or even impossible. Though the superb fighting qualities of highly trained and motivated German soldiers, and the Third Reich's technological superiority in tank and weapon design, also had crucial roles to play, the Luftwaffe represented the key element making the successes of all other branches possible. While the Luftwaffe enjoyed air superiority, the combat fortunes of the Third Reich continued to ride high. When control of the air passed decisively to the Allies, Germany's hopes of victory began accelerating into a spiral of defeat. Early in the war, prowling masses of Luftwaffe aircraft fatally hampered the attempts of hostile forces to maneuver. The omnipresent Stuka dive-bombers crisscrossing the skies pounced on any infantry or vehicles incautious enough to emerge from hiding during the day, except in foul weather that kept the airplanes grounded. The German forces, meanwhile, moved freely and rapidly, surrounding or bypassing their enemies again and again and thus compelling their surrender. The Luftwaffe's eventual loss of aerial domination exposed the Germans to precisely the same misfortunes on the ground as they had once relentlessly inflicted on the Poles and Russians. In the Falaise Pocket in Normandy, for example, the splendidly lethal Panthers, Tigers, and Tiger II tanks of the Nazi Panzer Divisions never had the opportunity to destroy the flimsily-armored, outgunned Sherman tanks of their American opponents. Instead, American fighter-bombers systematically annihilated them and their supporting infantry formations from the air, leaving the landscape strewn with flipped-over tank hulks and in places literally carpeted with the flesh of dead men. Some 10,000 Germans died and 50,000 surrendered to the western Allies at Falaise, due to Hitler's order to counterattack without air support. During its heyday, however, the Luftwaffe amply proved the leading role played by air power in the modern combined arms formula. It also produced a remarkable number of aces, whose exploits overshadowed the finest pilots of the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, or the United States. The Luftwaffe: The History of Nazi Germany’s Air Force during World War II looks at the role the German air force played during the war, from its origins to its near demise. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the Luftwaffe like never before, in no time at all.

They usually produce a very good account of the subject, with a good selection of sources and some photos, images or maps. I read one of their books on a subject I had read a lot about before, and being very satisfied with that one, I took it as a standard.Their books are not to be expected as complete, comprehensive works, but lean more toward a good overall short account. Choose one if the subject is new to you or you want a good overview. They appeal to me as good introductions, or if I have no intention of reading long works on a specific theme. That said, I like them and think they're very effective in providing good information as well as a good read.I have read and reviewed several of their other titles on WW II (see some here: The Miracle of Dunkirk: The History of the World War II Battle and Evacuation that Helped Save Britain from Nazi Germany ).Now for the Luftwaffe title. It follows the pattern and is successful in condensing a lenghty an well covered subject in a very short publication. However, I had the impression that it was a bit below the same publisher's average titles. But it is a good read nevertheless, and provides a good understanding of the evolution of the Luftwaffe before and during the war, and on how and why it went from an "invincible" air force at the early stages of the war to defeat.I would highlight:- the introduction on the origins of the German air force and actually air warfare itself on WW I;- the planning mistakes by German command;- the description of some tactics and even ground maintenance procedures;- interesting information and figures on production, losses, aircraft assigned at some of the more important fronts;- some less known facts such as the use of Stukas until the very end of the war;

Wilson I have recently been on a "kick" of reading condensed histories of events or periods of time, and this one, on the Nazi air force, joins the others in being an adequate means of learning or re-learning the key facts on a segment of history. You either satisfy your hunger for a given subject and are willing to stop at the short history, or you find it so fascinating that you want to go out and read several detailed books on the same subject. Having spent a lifetime career in the aerospace industry, I was quite content to stop with this short volume. It contains all the essential facts, actually starting back in the days of the Spanish Civil War, when the Germans used this conflict as a practice period for their ever-expanding fleet of aircraft. It continues through the conquest of the European countries, the Battle of Britain, when they unsuccessfully tried to eliminate the English Royal Air Force prior to an invasion of the British Isles, through the final period when U.S. bombers (B-17s and B-24s) and fighters (P-38s, P-47s and P-51s) overwhelmed the Luftwaffe from the time of the Normandy invasion until the end of the war. The downfall of the German air effort was due to fuel shortages caused by the strategic bombing by thousands of Allied aircraft and unskilled interference by Hitler in timing and in the selection of aircraft production designs needed for the final defensive effort. The book is recommended for those who would like to learn more about the Luftwaffe and have only a few hours to devote to that task.

Instead the author describes in detail an unimportant design of a heavy bomber. These jet fighters e.g. Messerschmidt Me262 could have caused a greater influence on the war had it been used when it became available. Instead it was postponed by Hitler when it had to be transmuted into a bomber and was only used as a fighter when the Allies already had a vast aerial supremacy. Furthermore in the front pages the author mentions a heavy bomber. I should like to state that the Luftwaffe did not have any heavy and strategic bombers with the exception of a modified passenger plane the Focke-Wulf Condor but only medium bombers. So on the whole a not very satisfactory publication

Staughton There was something that smacked of greatness from the very first chapter of this book, perhaps some small thrill for a reader that lets them know that they are in for a wonderful ride. Little do we know from those early pages just how good the story gets, and just how talented a writer Lion truly is. It's easy to write a book about a robbery, just as it's easy to write a screenplay about a heist; plenty of people have done it, and many have done it badly. However, thanks to his extensive knowledge of history, detailed research into Prague and the Holy Roman Empire to make the entire premise seem authentic, and the rich character development that never seems to end, Lion managed to capture my interest from start to finish. Each player in this heist has their own mysterious past, as does their benefactor/boss, and as we begin to see the true colors and motivations appear as the book unfolds, we begin to feel the tension build. There is so much build up that I was worried for a time that the pay off wouldn't quite deliver, but the disparate ends of this complicated knot all end up being tied together in a staggering story that I'll be recommending to people for a long time. It is an impressive achievement, and a testament to not only Lion's skill as a writer, but his dedication to the craft. Painting the settings in such tangible, enjoyable ways is a challenge in itself, but to populate it with fascinating characters and a complex, engaging plot is nothing short of brilliant. Well Done!

Author Jim Lion has included plenty of international suspenseful intrigues that take the reader from Hawaii, to Prague, the Middle East and through Europe. Travel in time to past centuries and experience the varied cultures both Muslim and Christian. This book will have you thinking. I’m thinking it would make a spellbinding movie as it has all the plot attributes needed for a blockbuster. The story flow is fast paced, and the main characters Frank Claudius and Rachel have the reader on there side from the start. There are plenty of villains to keep the tension intense and a heist of some valuable treasures to add to the excitement of the read. This is a real page-turner, from beginning to thrilling climax.Any reader who enjoys a historical fiction and thriller combination will love this marvelous story. I would recommend it to all readers, not only of those genres.

By Liz Evans Have you ever read a story that’s not yet popular and know that there’s something about it that’s just destined for greatness? This is one such story. From the sundrenched beaches of Hawaii to the European charm of Prague, we are taken on a journey through a conflict that we are all too well versed in today. The stage is set for a gripping crime and the players all know their parts but one player is sick of the script. What would you do for money? Fast paced but a good read, this has all the markings of a best seller in the making. Overall, it’s the kind of read that you regret putting down for those bothersome interruptions called life.

Great photos and maps By dancingledge Gives a brief, attractive overview of activities, attractions, beaches, food, shopping, local customs, and practicalities. Perfect for first time visitor who wants a concise guidebook. Includes sections on San Juan, North Coast, West Coast, South Coast, The Cordillera, East Coast and Islands. If you are unfamiliar with Puerto Rico, I recommend reading this book before making your itinerary. What sets this book apart from the rest are the beautiful photographs. The maps are handy, including a pocket map. The size of the book makes it easy to carry in a purse but it is heavy due to the thick photo quality paper.

Gundlach I have been a big fan of DK's "Top 10" books for over a decade and have used them exptensively throughout Europe/eastern Europe. Small in size and weight, they are perfect for slipping into a pocket or purse without being cumbersome. They pack tons of info in each book, all the top attractions and even those "off the beaten path" for a variety of tastes, preferences and activities. On Puerto Rico edition; H was born/raised there, we still have family there and visit frequently. We have given this book to several of our friends when they visit PR. We have found it to be accurate and comprehensive. Enjoy your trip!

I thought about titling my book and decided on the title, "The FBI, A Vocation to Serve". I felt it is truly a vocation and not a job and it is a call to serve the people of America. It may be difficult to believe or may seem inconsistent but some agents were actually priests and many were in the seminary to become priests. I guess the reason that is, is because most criminals are violent people and priests' vocation is to tend to their souls while as an FBI agent's vocation is to get them off the street to protect those that can't defend themselves. The entire mission of the FBI is to protect the weaker and the integrity of the United States. As a young clerk I was inspired when I saw the agents take violent people off the street. I saw them use their God given talents to out think those violent criminals and I saw them removed from society so they couldn't harm anyone else. I have always told my children to get jobs in serve to others. I told them if they have a hard time getting to the office, maybe they are in the wrong field. I never had a problem going to work each day. I had a fulfilled life and a vocation to serve. It was grand.

I have heard many of his FBI stories, well, ones that he could tell. But now reading about how he began as an FBI clerk, dragging my mom and kids all around the county, is inspirational. My dad loved every single minute of his career, never dreading going to work, as he always told the four of us. This is a beautiful reminder of the sacrifices he made to keep the U.S. secure. I cherish the stories that were new to me and am delighted that my boys will have a book about the life of their grandpa! Great book that will bring tears to your eyes, as well as smiles to your face! You did it!!

Twilight of a certain summer day, many years ago, shaded softly down over the wild Ohio valley bringing keen anxiety to a traveler on the lonely river trail. He had expected to reach Fort Henry with his party on this night, thus putting a welcome end to the long, rough, hazardous journey through the wilderness; but the swift, on-coming dusk made it imperative to halt. The narrow, forest-skirted trail, difficult to follow in broad daylight, apparently led into gloomy aisles in the woods.

The Last Trail, by Zane Grey

From School Library Journal

YA--Helen Sheppard and her father left Williamsburg, VA, to start a new life in the Ohio Valley. Her father's friend, Col. Ebenezer Zane, met them at Fort Henry after a terrifying close encounter with Indians that ended peacefully when two bordermen, Jonathan Zane and Lew Wetzel, stepped out of the forest to rescue them. Helen is intrigued by Jonathan Zane and he with her. As the story unfolds, this love affair mingles with the tale of the early days of the Ohio Valley. Indian resentment against the encroaching white men, an obsessive lover, horse rustlers, and plain folks trying to build homesteads out of the wilderness are brought to life by Grey's fine storytelling skills. This is a reprint of the last volume of the author's "Ohio River Trilogy," published in 1909; however, the book stands alone. An interesting foreword written by Grey's son, Loren, tells much about the writer. A good story that would make great historical fiction reading for an American-history assignment.

By A Customer This classic western tail of men saving women, while being a great love story is also a wonderful adventure story. A classic cowboy\borderman fights indian to save the helpless beuty, but instead of man saving woman, it is reversed, when Helen saves Jonathan from his own unhappy life. I have loved this book since the first day my mother placed it in my hands to read, and although the original has a few lapses in storyline, they kill someone twice, the basic story structure is enjoyable. Having read this book close to a dozen times, I can recommend that every person who has never given westerns a try read this one.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful. Read the Paperback By djbrkns Great story. I found myself hesitant to pick this book up and reluctant to put it down. I haven't been a big reader of westerns, but I have been wanting to do some historical reading. 'Desert Gold' interested me because it was a western that covered the times that it was published in: 1913.The characters are just good people surviving a harsh environment, protecting whatever and whoever they can. It took me a while to get my mind adjusted to Zane Grey's style of writing, but I really enjoyed everything about it. This is a unpretentious story of finding root, pursuit, escape and survival and it provides a medium for Zane Grey to get philosophical on us during long dusty nights in the desert. Although it may have bogged down a little, I liked the philosophical. Always have. The book has a satisfying ending even if it did finish a little cleaner than it was set up to do.I read this in the 1964 paperback edition, but it would be great in audio!

In the year 1010, a Benedictine monk named Eilmer of Malmesbury fastened on a set of home-made wings and hurled himself from the tower of Malmesbury Abbey. The flight did not, presumably, go as planned. Eilmer's efforts resulted only in him crashing to the ground, suffering two broken legs for his troubles. The fledgling world of aviation would prove to be a dangerous one. The Wright brothers made history with the world's first powered aeroplane flight in 1903. Five years later one of their machines would be involved in the world's first fatal aeroplane crash. Things would only get more dangerous with the advent of World War One as aircraft evolved the ability to blast each other from the sky. Aviation: A Bare Bones history is a fascinating fast-paced history of flight - from the very first passenger-carrying hot air balloon in 1783 through to the space race and beyond.

How do you survive when you’re 11 years old and all your family have been taken from you and killed?

How do you continue to live, when everything around you is designed to ensure certain death?

Arek Hersh tells his story simply and honestly, a moving account of a little boy who made his own luck and survived. He takes us into the tragic world imposed on him that robbed him of his childhood.

The depth of the tragedy, strength of courage and power of survival will move you and inspire you.

Contrary to assertions that the Holocaust years were a mere ‘detail of history’, Arek Hersh gives us a glimpse into the greatest catastrophe that man has ever inflicted on his fellow man.

A Detail Of History: The harrowing true story of a boy who survived the Nazi holocaust, by Arek Hersh

About the Author Born in Sieradz in Poland in 1928, Arek was the fourth of five children. His family were Orthodox Jews. At the age of ten, he was sent by the Germans to Otoschno labour camp, where he was forced to work on the Warsaw-to-Berlin railway for two years. Of the 2,500 Jews in the labour camp, only 11 survived. When Arek was 12, he was reunited with his family in Sieradz, but after just two weeks, he was transported to the Lodz ghetto. He never saw the rest of his family again. He found himself in an orphanage in Lodz and was given a job in the textile mill. In June 1944 the Germans started to liquidate the ghetto and soon orders came through for the orphanage to be closed. All the children were to be “resettled”. On 25 August, about 185 of them assembled outside the orphanage. They were put onto a truck and transported in cattle wagons to Birkenau-Auschwitz. On arrival, when the selection took place, Arek realised that the Nazis were separating people into two rows. Although ordered to go to the left, he managed to cross to the right when the guards’ attention was distracted. Arek had just saved himself from certain death in the gas chambers. Of the 185 orphans, only Arek and two others survived the day. In January 1945 Arek was among the thousands of men and women from Auschwitz forced onto a death march towards Germany. They marched for days to the large town of Katowice, where they were put into goods wagons. The journey in those wagons lasted for several days without food. They eventually arrived at Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany. Arek managed to survive in the most appalling conditions until, in April 1945, the Germans decided to evacuate the camp. The 4,500 inmates were on the march again towards the city of Weimar, where they were loaded onto open wagons. After three and a half weeks on the train, mostly without food, they arrived in Czechoslovakia. On 4 May 1945, 600 of the original 4,500 men from Buchenwald arrived at Roundnice. The train was finally taken to the Theresienstadt ghetto, where, four days later, on 8 May, they were liberated by the Russian army. Arek had survived, but virtually all his family had been murdered. His only surviving relative was Mania, his eldest sister, whom he found in 1947. After liberation, Arek was transported to England with 300 other children. Today, Arek lives in Leeds, England. He is married and has three daughters and seven grandchildren. His years since the Holocaust have been quiet and happy.

The reviewer who turned his/her nose up at "the journal-like style with its very simple matter-of-fact nature ... the grammatical errors" should perhaps have taken into account two facts that were obvious to me at least from the narrative: 1. that Mr Hersh had no formal education after the age of 11 because that was when the Nazis first imprisoned him in a concentration camp, and 2. that he didn't start learning English until he was evacuated to England in 1945 at the age of 14. I think the odd grammatical lapse can be allowed in those circumstances. Thank you Mr Hersh for such a beautifully written story - you have given me a far deeper understanding of the extent and intensity of suffering during the Holocaust. Yes it was harrowing to read, but ultimately uplifting.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Captivating true story By Elizabeth I've read about the holocaust before, but this was about a 10 year old boy's fight for survival. How anyone can deny the holocaust happened is mind blowing.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Linda's review By linda Excellent book - very realistic tale - hard to even imagine that he survived. Recommend to all who want to experience era thru eyes of a child thru teen.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of September 2015: When we last saw Jacob and his peculiar companions in Hollow City they were in the kind of danger that left me chewing my fingernails waiting for the next book to see if they make it out alive. The Library of Souls did indeed pull me off the previous cliff, but if you know Ransom Riggs and the Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children series, you know there is more where that came from. As we’ve come to expect, the third book in the series has an abundance of strange and absorbing black and white photographs that came from all sorts of places yet look as though they were created just for this particular piece of the puzzle—at this point, the photos provide an undercurrent as critical to the overall flow of the story as the words themselves. I don't want to spoil the read so I won't tell you (as much as I'd like to...) about reversals and time loops, evil doers and acts of heroism that make up this tantalizing novel, but let me just say that I found the whole thing, from beginning to end, to be every bit as mysterious, surprising, and gratifying as I’d hoped it would be. --Seira Wilson

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—A thrilling and satisfying installment in Riggs's "Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children" series. The book picks up where Hollow City (Quirk, 2014) left off without missing a beat, catapulting the children on a dark chase through London and various time loops in a final confrontation against the evil wights and the monstrous hollowgasts. In Hollow City, the children were trying to save Miss Peregrine. In Library of Souls, the fate of all Peculiardom is at stake. As in the previous books, the characters, their relationships, and their special abilities help to inform the world-building, and the detailed descriptions set the tone, which covers the spectrum from humorous to suspenseful to downright terrifying. An old adage states that a picture is worth a thousand words, and, as in the previous books, found photographs continue to illustrate the unique cast of characters and fantastical settings. The photos collected by Riggs are a highlight, adding a believable confirmation to the spectacular narrative. Readers new to the series should start with the first book, and interest in the titles will only grow, as Tim Burton's film adaptation is scheduled for March 2016. VERDICT This YA series has strong crossover appeal; this latest volume is a must-purchase where fans have embraced the first two.—Billy Parrott, New York Public Library

Review “...enthralling...”—Children's Bookwatch“Fans of the trilogy’s first two books will enjoy Library of Souls for its unique world, fast action, satisfying answers and a thorough tying up of loose ends.”—Free Lance-Star“I was blown away by the way the haunting photographs were woven so seamlessly into the incredible plot. And Library of Souls has simply the most perfect ending.”—Nikki, Justine Magazine   “Oh, my birds, I love this book! I’m obsessed with Ransom Riggs’ wildly creative world packed with heroic, heartwarming characters, supper baddies, and incredible settings like Devil’s Acre and the Library of Souls.”—Annalyse, Justine Magazine“Library of Souls will not disappoint...”—Forces of Geek"The challenge Riggs faces in Library of Souls is to match the remarkably high standard set by the first two books in the series, either the mind-bending bafflements of the first book or the edge-of-your-seat action of the second. Riggs succeeds, delivering a thrilling conclusion to Jacob’s trilogy."—Paste magazine "Readers are sure to leap right in after the cliffhanger ending of Hollow City, and they won’t be disappointed."—RT Book Review, 4 1/2 out of 5 stars "Fans will easily lose themselves in this most peculiar tale of all."—Booklist "I enjoyed reading this book so much, the cliched, 'I couldn’t put it down,' doesn’t suffice."—Geeks of Doom "...thrilling and satisfying..."—School Library Journal

The first book introduces the characters, the setting and the plot; the second creates the tension and drama that drives the story to a “cliff” from which the reader hangs until the final novel arrives and that installment brings to a conclusion the questions, mysteries raised in the first two installments with the heroes having faced life-threatening situations (sometimes) successfully. If the trilogy is a “success,” by its completion the reader will feel: as satisfied as if they had completed an arduous journey, sad to say goodbye to people with whom they had traveled but joyful at having experienced a trip whose memories will last a life time. In all aspects, this book was a fitting completion of a most satisfying trilogy. The “cliff” from which we were left hanging at the end of Hollow City was in a station of the London “tube” at the present time (Jacob, Emma, et al, having been forced through a time loop into this moment) amidst the smoke and rubble of a fierce battle fought with the wights. The survivors of the fight were facing a Hollowgast (a monster created when a Peculiar acts against his/her nature) who was intent on devouring them. The resolution of that moment was shocking and seemed overly contrived but was fitting for the story arc. The next 48-72 hours were relentless for Jacob and his crew as they searched for their missing companions and mentors. As they searched London the side streets and familiar sights were welcoming while holding the potential for danger. Eventually, Jacob and his crew meet Sharon, a peculiar Peculiar who would take them through a loop to The Devil’s Acre, “the most retched slum of Victorian England,” where their friends were taken. This is the location of many addicted, conniving, thieving, untrustworthy Peculiar who could not “fit in” anywhere else. Its topography is the stuff of nightmares, its mysteries dark and plentiful and its intent is deception – all-in-all the perfect location for the final show down of “good” and “evil.” In that final confrontation the young Jacob learns the power of wounds and the reality that some hurts will not heal because the one harmed chooses to hold onto the injury. The last twenty-two pages may be the best writing of the series. The story is brought full-circle finding Jacob back where he started. The dangers he now faces, in many ways, are the most perilous of all. His definitions of “trust,” “love,” “protection” are challenged beyond comfortable limits by those who had the responsibility to teach him those concepts and protect him by their use. The book ends with “closure” but that doesn’t stop Mr. Riggs from leaving some questions unanswered. This is a Young Adult series and therefore has no explicit sex (what desire that is displayed is¬ reflective of the furtive steps of teenagers experiencing their first romance), harsh language (there is some “colorful” language, however) but some of the details of the violence & its aftermath are quite graphic. As with the previous novels, this novel is illustrated with antique photographs collected from yard sales and flea markets; there seems to be fewer in this volume, but the ones present bring depth to the story, lending it a “sepia” hue. I will miss the Peculiar Children who were watched over by Ms. Peregrine. Actually, I will be more alert for the company of Peculiars in my present world. If I gleaned anything from this fictional series it is that being “peculiar” means ones power is unique. Such a realization raises the question of, “Just how peculiar am I?”

By Kindle Customer While I'm a fan of Mrs. Peregrine and all her children, I found book 3 to be lacking just a bit. There were too little of the parts that made the first two books special (peculiar children, for example), and too much of the stuff that made the first two books odd (the story written to match vintage photographs instead of the vintage photographs used to compliment the story, for example).  Book 3 was full of those little annoyances that sink otherwise good books--loose strings that don't get resolved, characters of significance written off to unsatisfactory endings, and a sluggish plot that don't got to the meat until the last 15% of the book to name a few.I was very pleased with the series conclusion, however, and that is the saving grace of Library of Souls.  Fans of the series are going to read the last book in the trilogy no matter what.  If you haven't picked up book one yet, I say go for it.  There is enough fun to be had that make this peculiar journey worth the ride.

Dockery The first book in the series was a creative tour de force, using a series of odd old photos as the springboard for some atmospheric, enthralling flights of the imagination. I was sold on it, still am.The old-photo gimmick began to wear a little thin in the second book, but it inspired the writer enough to hold my attention. The flaw in the second was that it was half a book, leaving the reader stuck with a rather bald half plot.In "Library of Souls," the photo gimmick utterly failed, and Riggs was left to create a final novel that had nothing to drive it forward but its plot. Implausible circumstances, nick-of-time coincidences, Jacob's magical ability to exert a little mind-control ju-ju over the hollows, even a suspension of the novel's own rules to make the hero and heroine magically become the same age and thus save their relationship.I had the distinct feeling that Riggs was slogging his way through the writing (as I was the reading). He tried to milk a one-book gimmick into a trilogy and it just didn't work.

In this stunning debut novel, Rebecca Walker turns her attention to the power of love and the limitations of the human heart. When Farida, a sophisticated college student, falls in love with Adé, a young Swahili man living on an idyllic island off the coast of Kenya, the two plan to marry and envision a simple life together―free of worldly possessions and concerns. But when Farida contracts malaria and finds herself caught in the middle of a civil war, reality crashes in around them. The lovers’ solitude is interrupted by a world in the throes of massive upheaval that threatens to tear them apart, along with all they cherish.

Haunting, exquisite, and certain to become a classic, Adé will stay with you long after you put it down. This is a timeless love story set perfectly, heartbreakingly, in our time.

Adé: A Love Story, by Rebecca Walker

From Booklist In a fiction debut that is as much a novel of self-discovery and identity as a lucent love story, memoirist Walker brings her background and literary strengths to bear. When the 19-year-old unnamed narrator and her Yale friend, Miriam, start their long travels, arriving in Africa becomes life-changing. In Egypt, the narrator feels she belongs for the first time, with her copper-colored skin and brown, almond-shaped eyes. Then in Lamu, an island off the coast of Kenya, she falls in love with handsome Swahili Muslim Adé, who gives her the Arabic name Farida. As Miriam resumes traveling alone, Farida and Adé live together simply and make plans to marry. But Swahili custom requires face-to-face meetings to ask for parental approval, and political realities strike previously entitled American Farida for the first time. Walker knows whereof she writes. Farida, like the author (daughter of novelist Alice Walker and lawyer Mel Levanthal), is black, white, and Jewish and a child of divorce, and Walker uses this knowledge to good effect here. A brief, sensuous love story grounded in painful reality. --Michele Leber

Review "Read this book! An incredible journey! A beautiful LOVE story!" —Madonna

"Memoirist Walker makes her fiction debut with a short, sad tale of love that flowers but cannot take root in Kenya. The prose is gorgeous." —Kirkus Reviews“Vivid… [Adé] will not soon be forgotten.” —New York Journal of Books“[Adé] reads like a memoir, and its prose is as concentrated and image filled as a parable. Readers will relish the dreamlike story of love and surrender.”—Library Journal“A fiction debut that is as much a novel of self-discovery and identity as a lucent love story.” —Booklist“Walker’s prose aches with longing, and a knowingness… [Adé] feels as though it’s told in the weighty quiet of a late night conversation.” —STETnyc.com

“I want to say Adé reads like a memoir, but this heartbreaking, poetic tale of romance versus reality does more than that: it reads like truth. Lush, sensual, seductive, Adé is written with as much love as the story it tells.” —MAT JOHNSON, author of Pym “In luminous, dreamlike prose, Rebecca Walker has written more than a love story: Adé explores the difficulty of fleeing one’s origins, of relinquishing privilege, even in the name of love.” —DANZY SENNA, author of You Are Free and Caucasia “Brief and intense, Adé is a surprise gem–a sensuous feast of food, sex, danger, and the life of awakened senses from one of our most celebrated nonfiction writers. A lyrical novel as timeless as Marguerite Duras’s The Lover.” —MOLLY PEACOCK, author of The Paper Garden: An Artist Begins Her Life’s Work at 72

“If you’ve ever dared to love outside the predictable geography of your origins, or wished you had, this beautiful novel will grab your heart and not let go.” —BLISS BROYARD, author of One Drop: My Father’s Hidden Life–A Story of Race and Family Secrets

Story is underdeveloped By L I am a fan of Rebecca Walker's previous work, having loved Baby Love and Black, White & Jewish, however Ade missed the mark as her fiction debut. Reading the first few chapters was troublesome and besides the poor sentence structure (I blame the editor), I tried to put a finger on what else was bothering me. As one reviewer stated, "this story reads like a book that was written for Kindle," complete with underdeveloped characters and an oddly paced story line. I too was disappointed that it did not have a new main character. I did not expect the book to have so much autobiographical content. It almost seems like a book that was written hurriedly, without the proper attention required. Though short, I did not bother finishing it. Buy it on Kindle if you are curious, but it is not worth the price charged for the print version. This will not be a favorite of anyone who reads avidly.

By missmickee/bookreview The narrator, a 19 year old first generation Ivy League freshman at Yale University, had a close relationship with both her divorced parents, her mother Christian and father Jewish. When she meets her 21 year old free spirited feminist friend Miriam in a film studies class, they became fast friends. As they experienced the excitement of the college party scene, they decide to travel together to Africa, taking a year or so off from their course of study. With approval and extra funds provided by her parents, they began their travel adventure.Landing in Cairo Egypt she and Miriam traveled south, feeling the land deeply familiar. They soon were dehydrated from the heat and saw a doctor. As they learned to keep time by muezzins call to prayer, they could feel the silent intense observations and stares of the women hidden in the hajab covering of muslim dress. The men mostly wore white shirts and skullcaps. Taking a fast dip in the Nile River, they traveled seeing the vastness of the Arabian Sea and the desolation of the Sinai desert, and Mount Sinai, where Moses received the 10 Commandments. In the desert they marveled at how their tour guides navigated around without landmarks, maps, or a compass. Miriam was annoyed at the tourists overall and the disrespect of Muslim men towards women. They traveled by ferry to "Lamu" the island of sand and stone, in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Kenya. Here, our narrator meets Ade`, a handsome young highly respected Swahili man, who worked very hard, visited his mother in the evenings at Ramadan, and gave her all his money to support their large family. His mother, was one of his father's five wives, who all lived away together on another island. Ade' gave the narrator the Arabic name "Farida", (translation: jewel/exceptional, like no other) when they fell deeply in love and before they decided to marry. His family was disapproving and shocked preferring he marry a Swahili woman. They grew to accept her, teaching her how women lived by observing traditional ways and practices. Miriam, very disappointed, left Farida to travel on, cautioning that most men only wanted a woman from the west only to pay their way into Europe or the U.S. This, wasn't the case with Ade' and Farida, they both decided to remain in Lamu, and live according to Muslim custom; which would in time alter their life/love by unforeseen circumstances. This is one of the most bittersweet breath taking stories about timeless love I have read recently. It was hard to understand how a sophisticated college educated feminist could consider marriage to a devout Muslim from another culture. "Ade: A Love Story" fosters understanding and acceptance of this choice. This is Walkers fictional debut, she is also an award winning journalist, blogger, lecturer. Walker's book: "Baby Love" (2008) was well received. She is the daughter of acclaimed author Alice Walker.

Not impressed By Amazon Customer I have been a fan of Rebecca for a while, but I am wholly disappointed by this book.First, I hesitate to call it a novel because it is so short. More like a novella. Then, for anyone who has read her memoir, you will see that half of the book is borrowed from her real life. Ugh.I know that writers infuse themselves into their characters but this is a whole new level. I was hoping for creativity. Something new and refreshing from her, but I was sadly let down. The book is an extension of her memoir with a standard love story woven through. By the time you start caring about this couple, she's quickly ending the story. She's lucky she had the connections to get this published.Very disappointed.
