By Mike O'Connor Richard Guard's LOST LONDON is a travel guide of sorts, a charming A-to-Z guide to long-since-vanished London buildings, streets, parks, markets, cemeteries, churches and other landmarks as well as jobs, pastimes, entertainments and traditions. It's a fascinating travelogue to London's forgotten past.Among the landmarks described in this 2012 Michael O'Mara Books release are the Adam & Eve Tea Gardens, Baynard's Castle, Coldbath Fields Prison, Devil Public House, The Globe, Hippodrome Racecourse, London Bridge Waterworks, Old Slaughter's Coffee House, Rillington Place and Wren's Lost Churches. Also covered are Costermongers' Language, Crossing Sweepers, Fleet Marriages, Penny Gaffs, Street Traders and Toshers. Most entries are one-two pages in length. Vintage illustrations are scattered throughout the book.Anyone with an interest in "the good old City" will enjoy Guard's book. It provides an appealing guided tour to "the secret, vanished or hidden aspects of (London's) history." Recommended.
