Lina Fabiani, intrepid journalist, and David Baron, Mossad agent, are closer than ever since being thrown together on their last mission. But David’s latest quest is personal. His beloved Jewish grandparents, survivors of the Holocaust, have been murdered. And before he knows it, his life is in jeopardy as well. Attacked by an assassin in his apartment, David is rescued by Lina’s quick-thinking. But the wound she inflicted on the assassin is fatal, and before they can interrogate him, he dies. All they got out of him was his strange insistence that the Fuhrer still lives… But Adolf Hitler has been dead for 70 years. So who is the assassin? And who was he working for? When Lina notices a strange tattoo on the man’s soldier, the mystery deepens. He seems to have a connection to Heinrich Himmler’s occult group ‘Black Camelot’. Lina and David must find out as much as they can about the members of this secret society. But time is running out. Can they unmask the assassins? Or will they too fall victim to Hitler’s Darkest Secret? ‘Hitler’s Darkest Secret’ is a gripping international thriller, uncovering the mysteries of the past to shed light on conspiracies in the present. It is the third book in the Nicolina Fabini thriller series, following on from ‘The Magdalene Conspiracy’ and ‘The Immortal Madonna’. It is perfect for fans of Dan Brown, Chris Malburg and Tom Haase. Praise for Yvonne Crowe: "A fascinating thriller. It gripped me from the first page" - Robert Foster, best-selling author of 'The Lunar Code' on ‘The Magdalene Conspiracy’ ‘thoroughly entertaining book that questions the origins of mankind and religion.’ - Mark Nemcoff, author of ‘Fatal Sunset’ on ‘The Immortal Madonna’ ‘this compelling yarn held me from start to finish; only the interruption of a night’s sleep prevented me from completing it in one sitting!’ - Sterling Gate Books on ‘The Immortal Madonna’ Yvonne Crowe was born in Auckland, New Zealand and loved reading as a child, using it as a form of escapism. Hitler's Darkest Secret, by Yvonne Crowe

Review Great book June 27, 2015Enjoyed the book...Lots of historical facts woven throughout. The characters were very strong and descriptions wonderful. The story moved right along. Pat CanadaGreat read. June 24, 2015"`Hitler's Darkest Secret" Believable characters with assassination attempts, and rumors that the Fuhrer still lives make's this book an international thriller. Yvonne Crowe brilliantly mixes historical fact and fanciful themes in this provocative mystery. A page-turner it has you hooked from the first sheet of print to the astonishing end. I give it Five Stars. Congrats Yvonne on a great read. Ron HanlonDown the rabbit hole once again for David and Lina June 24, 2014I've long though the author's work to be extremely cinegraphic and this one is no exception. Beginning with a prologue that could almost be out of The Temple of Doom (where we are taken "deep within the mountain of Abi-Genos, in the Cavern of the Gods") she links two death rituals together. "bloodlines must be avenged. It had been that way since Abraham's times. James - Dragon.

A provoking book with lots of twists and turns By Daniel Yvonne Crowe latest book reflects her talent and passion for writing historical mystery novels. She has a wonderful skillset in conjuring a great story seemingly with ease. The backbone of this book immersed readers in an unsettling theme of anti-Semitism. Although entirely fiction, the characters and events transpired in this book might bother some readers especially if you are a Holocaust survivor. But if you are into hardcore historical mystery novels then this book is for you.The characters are very believable, especially the relationship between Lina and David, they share some intimate moments that could make you blushed. But dwell deeper into the book and a disturbing and mysterious story unfolds.Deep within the mountain of Abi-Genos, in the Cavern of the Gods, the children of the Forgotten Father stood robed and cowled around the ceremonial Death Pit, chanting…You know you are in for a great read with an opening prologue that hooks you in.I have read Yvonne Crowe’s novels before and this one is a winner. As with her previous works there are controversial and debatable arguments that provoke thoughts. But that is what a great writer does; they challenge us to contemplate on subjects that make us feel uncomfortable. I give this book a solid five stars for it’s provocative theme.

By Jan Another of Yvonne Crowd’s eclectic novels which skilfully mix fact with fiction and fantasy on a rollercoaster ride throughout history. This time she set her sights on Die Fuhrer and his merry band of weirdos who were intent on bringing German mysticism back as the national ideology. They have all shuffled off the mortal coil and yet the flame has been passed on to another generation. There are dark doings in an ancient German Burg, castle to English speaking readers, as they attempt to resurrect the Fourth Reich and its nefarious leader.Nicolina is on hand to foil their dastardly plot with David’s help, the Mossad agent whose daytime job is that of a Professor of Ancient Languages. His expertise comes in handy as they unravel the secrets of the Runes of which the lightning bolt insignia of Himmler's SS is one.The cabal have murdered David's grandparents who are survivors of Auschwitz, so he has a personal stake in exposing and stopping the world domination plot. The story introduces Otto Skorzeny, Hitler's favorite commando, who earned the title of The Most Feared Man in Europe after The Battle of The Bulge in World War II. An interesting character who I suspect may feature in the next book in the Nicolina Fabiani Series. I can't wait.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Yvonne Crowe does it again! By Sterling Gate Books This is an electric international thriller/historical mystery that sets the bar for other authors to aspire to. Truly addictive!Everything about ‘Hitler’s Darkest Secret” – starting with the book’s title – is high concept. With assassination attempts, a sinister occult group, rumors the Fuhrer still lives and echoes of the Holocaust, it’s a disturbing yet gripping read.Five stars!

The odd grassy mound between the long ridges south of Gettysburg might arouse the curiosity of a visitor, but the site of the Bliss Farm lies hundreds of yards from modern tour routs. Certainly, more infamous sites on the battlefield vie for one’s attention, and the struggle fro this once prosperous homestead is easily overlooked. Yet, on July 2 & 3, 1863, the incongruously named farm was a no-man’s land that changed hands some ten times – possibly more than any other ground at Gettysburg. The reader is invited to tour this seldom explored area of the battlefield using maps, photos, and first-hand accounts to discover how that struggle impacted Lee’s plan for victory, the lives of those who fought there, and the Bliss family.

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Invaluable By James W. Durney Starting July 4, 1863 and continuing until they died the participants wrote and talked about Gettysburg. The public's appetite for Gettysburg, caused one author observed that writing about Gettysburg is "a cottage industry".For all of the books, magazines and movies, the Bliss Farm is almost unknown. This story is lost in the fighting on the first, Longstreet's attack and Pickett's Charge. This is the only book, currently in print, that I can find on the subject and one of two listed on Amazon. The Bliss Farm is between Seminary and Cemetery Ridge just off the Emmetsburg Road.In 1863, it is a prosperous place, dominated by a 3-story barn that draws skirmishers. The barn and other farm buildings are the objective in a battle within the battle.Starting on the Second, both sides fight to control the barn and the farm. For the Confederates, the barn is a sniper's nest to attack the Union artillerymen. As an observation post, they are slighting higher than the Union position giving them an unparallel view.In addition to denying the Confederates a sniper's nest and observation post, Union control is an advanced strong point that can warn of any attacks. For about 36 hours, men from the divisions of Anderson, Pender, Gibbon and Hays fight over this prize. The author estimates about 4,500 men created over 800 casualties trying to control the farm. This small battle could have contributed to defeating the attack on Cemetery Ridge on the night of the second.About mid-day on the Third, the Union skirmishers burn the barn and house ending the battle. The author has considerable knowledge and communicates well.He mixes contemporary accounts with his observations to create a readable account. Maps, illustrations and photographs enhance the writing. The most valuable part of the book is a walking tour of the fighting. This is invaluable.Knowing what I wanted to find, I had problems picking out a "possibly" site.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Microhistory of a small part of the Gettysburg Battlefield By Bruce Trinque Studies of the Battle of Gettysburg have been dominated for the past few decades by "microhistories" that examine small parts of the battle rather than try to try to paint comprehensive pictures of the whole three days of fighting. JOhn Archer's "Fury on the Bliss Farm at Gettysburg" is an example of such a microhistory, although perhaps one shorter than most. It examines the fighing (especially on Days Two and Three of the battle) centered on a small patch of ground quite visible from the Angle on Cemetery Ridge, yet the Bliss Farm site itself -- no buildings remain, only a mound of rubble and an old cellarhole -- is seldom visited. Archer's book is both a tour guide and a history of the Bliss Farm struggle. The Bliss Farm site, located between the lines of the two opposing armies, changed hands again and again. Late on the second day of battle, Union defense of the site perhaps dislocated the operations of Carnot Posey's brigade, preventing him from offering much meeded support to Ambrose Wright's Georgian brigade during its brief penetation of the Union line south of the Angle. The most spectacular actuaion at the Bliss Farm, however, came early the next day when the Fourteenth Connecticut once again siezed the farm and burned it in full sight of both armies, prior to Pickett's Charge. The maps in Archer's book are readily followed, and the book is illustrated with numerous photographs.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Great preview and on the field book. By Papi This fine volume paints a vivid picture of action at the Bliss Farm on the 3rd day at the Battle of Gettysburg. With this information in hand the action on this sector of the battlefield prior to Pickett's Charge is much more understandable and some of the failures of that assault as a result of actions on the Bliss Farm are more clearly understood. Maps contained in this little book are very useful when reading the text and are quite valuable on the field. The period photos greatly enhance the reader/viewer's appreciation of the battle site. Highly recommend reading this book before you next visit Gettysburg.

Founded by the Legendary Robert Rogers and Later Led by John Graves Simcoe, a Loyalist Unit that Fought Alongside the British Army Against the American Patriots Prior to the British attack on Long Island in August 1776, French and Indian War hero Robert Rogers organized a regiment to join the fight—but not on the side of his native New Hampshire. Named in honor of Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III, Rogers’s regiment recruited the bulk of its soldiers from the large number of Loyalist refugees on Staten Island who had fled from New York. Rogers’s command of the unit was short-lived, however, after a humiliating defeat in late October by a surprise attack on his headquarters. Under new leadership, the unit played a decisive role and suffered heavy casualties at the battle of Brandywine that brought them their first favorable attention from the British high command. With this performance, and under the able leadership of John Graves Simcoe, the Queen’s American Rangers—sometimes known as “Simcoe’s Rangers”—were frequently assigned to serve alongside British regular troops in many battles, including Monmouth, Springfield, Charleston, and Yorktown. Receiving frequent high praise from Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton, the Commander in Chief of the British Army in America, the unit was placed on the American Establishment of the British Army in May 1779, a status conferred on provincial units that had performed valuable services during the war, and was renamed the 1st American Regiment. Before the end of the war, the rangers were fully incorporated into the British regular army, one of only four Loyalist units to be so honored. The Queen’s American Rangers by historian Donald J. Gara is the first book-length account of this storied unit. Based on extensive primary source research, the book traces the complete movements, command changes, and battle performances of the rangers, from their first muster to their formal incorporation into the British Army and ultimate emigration to Canada on land grants conferred by a grateful British crown.

Specifically the forming and tactics of the Queens (Rogers) American Rangers. How the British Army recruited and commissioned their officers a very interesting topic. Until now I never realized how many in North America remained loyal to the British Crown during the revolution. The book is well written, holds your attention and is fun to read. Goes well beyond and books or movies that I've seen to date. Clears up a lot of detail behind the scenes.

Outstanding Book By Jim Piecuch Readers interested in Loyalist military units in general or the Queen’s Rangers in particular will find this a valuable book, as will anyone with even a general interest in the American Revolution. Gara has written an engaging, informative history of the Queen's Rangers and provided the necessary context so that readers can follow the unit through its long and active service of raids and battles.

By Peter Opara Being Igbo, and having read almost all that Chinua Achebe has written, I can say that this is one of the best literary works I have ever come across. I read Arrow of God for the firs time when I was about fourteen and even at that age, it made a great impression on me. I have read it repeatedly over the years, and with each read, the raw reality of this book thinly veiled by what another reviewer reffered to as "polite prose" completely immersed me in Ezeulu's society, generation and struggle. This was a wonderful story written by one of the greatest story-tellers ever. I recommend this book and all of Chinua Achebe's work to any and everyone.

39 of 43 people found the following review helpful. The Best Achebe Novel By A Customer I know that many people have read Things Fall Apart, but that is not his greatest novel. I was not forced to read any of his books. I was just curious. It exposed me to some of the greatest literature I could ever have known. Arrow of God is by far my favorite Achebe book. So if you think Things Fall Apart is good, Arrow of God is so much deeper. You get to know the characters so much better. You feel like you are part of the scene. It is more personal. You see more into different people's lives. I read a lot of books. This one is one of my favorite.

22 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Another Chinua Masterpiece By Elijah Chingosho "Arrow of God" is another excellent novel by the world renowned Chinua Achebe. I have read this novel perhaps five times, having first read it decades ago. I still get thrilled and marvel at the ability of Chinua Achebe to tell a good story that keeps the reader wanting to read more. I have also read "Things Fall Apart" and "Man of the People", which are all excellent reading for those interested in African literature. The story is set in a traditional Igbo village in Western Nigeria where the author traces how the age old traditions that had stood the test of time were systematically eroded by colonial rule. An important lesson we learn is that we need to change with the times and be adaptive to the constant changes, otherwise we perish. This is a well written book by a remarkable author that is very interesting to read as well as enlightening.

He awoke in the dark. His awakening was simple, easy, without movement save for the eyes that opened and made him aware of darkness. Unlike most, who must feel and grope and listen to, and contact with, the world about them, he knew himself on the moment of awakening, instantly identifying himself in time and place and personality. After the lapsed hours of sleep he took up, without effort, the interrupted tale of his days. He knew himself to be Dick Forrest, the master of broad acres, who had fallen asleep hours before after drowsily putting a match between the pages of “Road Town” and pressing off the electric reading lamp.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Love among the flawless By Karl Janssen Dick Forrest owns a sizeable chunk of farmland in northern California. A thoroughly modern agriculturalist, he raises all manner of livestock and crops, all of the highest quality, using the latest, most advanced scientific methods. Ensconced within these fertile lands is his home, a palatial estate combining the best of traditional and modern architecture. In his youth Dick led a life of adventure, and now that he has put down some roots, he applies the same adventurous spirit to his agricultural ventures. Sharing in this pleasant and prosperous life is his wife Paula, an exceptionally attractive woman who likewise succeeds at all she touches. She plays piano like a professional pianist and breeds horses like a professor of animal husbandry. This remarkable couple surrounds themselves with a rotating entourage of family, friends, and scholars. Every night is a dinner party in which wine and song are accompanied by spirited debates on various and sundry topics. Thus the reader is treated to chapters on philosophy, music, poetry, animal husbandry, and--not uncommon for London--the superiority of the white race. Into this eclectic intellectual enclave wanders Evan Graham, an old friend who is described as being almost exactly like Dick, but a bachelor. He quickly develops an attraction towards Paula, admires her secretly, and tries to ascertain if the feeling is mutual. That's pretty much all that happens for the first twenty chapters. Most of the book consists of the many dinner-party and horseback-ride conversations on London's pet subjects. The story of Dick Forrest is like a fantasy autobiography for London. Anything London ever dabbled in, Dick excels at. He runs the kind of farm London would want to run, he lives in the house London would love to build, and he's married to the perfect woman of London's dreams. Because of his affinity for Dick and Paula, London spends so much time describing this idealized couple and their varied interests that there's very little room left for plot.Thankfully, in the latter third of the book, the love triangle actually gets quite interesting. To its credit, The Little Lady of the Big House is rarely boring. It's just rather weird. Typically, the success of a love story hinges on how well the reader can identify with the characters. Today's readers, however, will likely find they have more in common with medieval kings and queens than with Dick and Paula Forrest. Often in literature a character's faults contribute to the situation they find themselves in, but that's not the case here, simply because London doesn't allow his three lead characters to have any faults. The dialogue throughout is a mixture of pretentious poetry, intellectual posturing, and self-invented slang that is so removed from actual speech it effectively divorces the story from reality. Dick is frequently asked to compose impromptu songs, which he does with relish. ("Hear me! I am Eros! I stamp upon the hills!") The Forrests have Native American pet names for each other. They refer to their Asian servants by the demeaning appellations of Ah Ha, Oh My, and Oh Dear. Only in Jack London's house, perhaps, would people ever speak in this way. In fact, The Little Lady of the Big House, originally published in 1916, is less valuable for its literary merits than for what it says about Jack London. Scholars and fans of his work, looking for insight into his philosophies of life, love, and death; his views on agricultural science; his favorite leisure activities, cocktails, songs, and poems; will find plenty of material here. In terms of literary quality it is a mediocre novel at best, but it's a pleasantly unconventional work that only London could have written.

Dick Forrest came off as unrealistic and weirdly idealized with his ranch and his hyper-efficiency and loads of money and joviality. But as a look into another time and London's version of an ideal world, it was interesting. The story itself did eventually draw me in (when is a love triangle ever boring?) and overall thought the book was okay.

SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2015 FINANCIAL TIMES AND MCKINSEY BUSINESS BOOK OF THE YEAR

A New York Times technology and business reporter charts the dramatic rise of Bitcoin and the fascinating personalities who are striving to create a new global money for the Internet age.

Digital Gold is New York Times reporter Nathaniel Popper’s brilliant and engrossing history of Bitcoin, the landmark digital money and financial technology that has spawned a global social movement.

The notion of a new currency, maintained by the computers of users around the world, has been the butt of many jokes, but that has not stopped it from growing into a technology worth billions of dollars, supported by the hordes of followers who have come to view it as the most important new idea since the creation of the Internet. Believers from Beijing to Buenos Aires see the potential for a financial system free from banks and governments. More than just a tech industry fad, Bitcoin has threatened to decentralize some of society’s most basic institutions.

An unusual tale of group invention, Digital Gold charts the rise of the Bitcoin technology through the eyes of the movement’s colorful central characters, including an Argentinian millionaire, a Chinese entrepreneur, Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, and Bitcoin’s elusive creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Already, Bitcoin has led to untold riches for some, and prison terms for others.

Popper has produced a riveting tale filled with colorful innovators that is crucial reading for anyone who wants to understand the future.” (Walter Isaacson, author of The Innovators)“Bitcoin may be a product of computer science, but it is a very human story. This highly entertaining history reminds us yet again that truth can be stranger than fiction and can be peopled with even more unusual and compelling characters.” (Larry Summers, former Secretary of the Treasury)“So, yes, it’s a totally awesome book” (Justin Fox, Bloomberg)“This excellent work is the book on Bitcoin you’ve been waiting for” (Tyler Cowen, Marginal Revolution)“An elegant, thrilling tour-de-force. . . . Cohan, author of House of Cards)“Finally, the book so many of us have been waiting for: A riveting and smart account of the strange history of Bitcoin. You’ll start knowing nothing about Bitcoin and finish with deep knowledge, but you won’t realize you’re learning along the way -- you’ll just think it’s a lot of fun.” (Adam Davidson, co-founder of NPR's Planet Money)“An engrossing introduction to one of the most transformative innovations in finance of the last few decades. Digital Gold paints a vivid portrait of the economics and technology of Bitcoin as well as the people behind it.” (Susan Athey, The Economics of Technology Professor, Stanford Graduate School of Business and Winner of the John Bates Clark Medal in Economics)“The most compelling and in-depth investigation into the world of Bitcoin and digital currency. Excellent journalism about bitcoin subculture By Cemil Sinasi Turun This book is standing out among other bitcoin books recently published in one important difference: This one is the result of genuine journalism. The writer is not here for attracting the techie crowd who are interested in the fortunes of mining bitcoins every 10 minutes or so. But he does a very good job of digging all the key people (arguably even the main character. Mr Satoshi himself) and putting events in a time-line starting from day one, from early 2009.Before this book, I read three other bitcoin/blockchain books, watched the documentary (The Rise and Rise of Bitcoin) and read lots of web site articles and blogs. I heard lots of things about the main characters, Satoshi, Gavin, Hal, Ross, Erik, Wences, Winkelvii, Charlie etc. but after Popper's book, all of them are now linked in an organized story line and they came alive in my mind. In a way this book reads like fiction, almost like the script of an HBO mini series. But all of the events are real and the characters are actual living human beings, sometimes with sad endings.I wonder if the FBI had ever used description of some events in this book as evidence? Or just the opposite, did Popper use legal documents or police reports. How on the earth did he find out all the details of the life of the founder of Silk Road? (Like the thoughts of his former girl firends) Or details about the "super secret" meeting of Allen & Co? Wow! I am shocked, this is journalism at its best, applied to a favourite but difficult to understand contemporary subject.Bottom line: The book is an example of very fine writing and detailed reporting of the bitcoin subculture. Not a book to learn how to mine bitcoins or where to buy them.

Fascinating stories about people who created Bitcoin By Bhagwan Chowdhry I have been studying Bitcoin and Cryptocurrencies for some time now and wondered if another book on the subject will be interesting enough or have enough fresh material to keep me engaged. Digital Gold is fascinating. It reads like a fast paced thriller. Those who know only a little, or a lot, about Bitcoin and its origins would love it. Nathaniel Popper's narration makes the stories and characters involved come alive.

By Luke Pennig Engaging read and very informative about the roots and future of Bitcoin told from the perspective of the characters involved. It is accessible to someone who is not actively engaged in digital currency but is still interested in learning.

Poet and novelist Pablo Medina's Cubop City fuses raw, passionate language, and elegant lyricism to breathe life into a musically-disguised New York City shaped by jazz masters, refugees, and storytellers.

Our guide into Cubop City is The Storyteller, born nearly blind and shrouded in his mother's guilt. He's homeschooled inside his parents' crumbling apartment with a European housekeeper, and educated through Encyclopedia Britannica, the Bible, and Arabian Nights. When he's 25, his mother and father are both diagnosed with cancer, and The Storyteller alone is left to care for them. He does so by telling them stories conceived from the prolific reading that allowed his imagination to flourish despite little contact with the outside world.

Through his tales full of magic, sorrow, longing, and love, Cubop City surges colorfully to life. Moving through myriad points of view, The Storyteller imagines a world populated by both well-known figures like Chano Pozo and Jelly Roll Morton, and invented characters, most notably a mustachioed man who is stabbed by a stranger and embarks on a novel-long search for his attacker.

Molded in the cadence of Afro-Cuban jazz, Cubop City is a symphonic portrait of a bustling urban landscape and the intimate lives that give a city its voice.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. "I made believe I had a life inside fiction..." By Evelyn Getchell Pablo Medina is as much a master as the Afro-Cuban jazz masters his magnificent Cubop City Blues pays homage to. His finely tuned novel is his instrument; he plays it like a virtuoso with his writing. And we hear it with our reading. Every word is a musical note that soars from each page, carrying our hearts and our imaginations with them to that place where only such soulful music can take us.At the pulsating heart of this passionately lyrical composition of many voices is the Storyteller, the blind son of Cuban exiles brought to New York City as a very young boy. Because of his near-total blindness since birth he has lived an isolated, sheltered life with his immigrant parents and their European housekeeper, Cornelia, who taught him how to play Chess and become a teller of stories. It is he who in his blindness has imagined a sensual and seductive but often dangerous world of Cubop City...he who has manifested his compassion for his dying parents into characters who populate stories of his own creation. "And then I understood what would happen if I told them a story, or part of a story, every day. It wasn't a cure for their maladies but a way of existing, going from story to story..."The Storyteller with no practical experience in the outside world relies heavily upon a lively imagination deeply rooted in the only three books he has ever read but has read prolifically - the 1911 ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA, THE KING JAMES BIBLE, and THE ARABIAN NIGHTS - to produce stories he can narrate to the parents he alone must care for as they lie side by side dying from cancer. In a crumbling apartment in New York City where the Storyteller can hear the world outside his window but can only imagine that world in his mind's eye - "I made believe I could see, I made believe I was a character in the stories. I made believe I had a life inside fiction, that I could love and be afraid and tell stories and be wounded and married and divorced and live alongside the characters I created. And that it was all true."This beautiful, lyrical novel is a magnificent orchestration of music, language and culture; of history, myth and storytelling; of love, longing and becoming. Pablo Medina not only gives us the voices of immigrants and exiles, Cuban musicians and jazz masters, friends and lovers, poets and storytellers, he gives us their life blood - the music of life that flows within each of them.Gorgeously eloquent, vividly atmospheric and intimately rendered, Cubop City Blues has to be the most liberating novel I have read this year.

Moore Pablo Medina's "Cubop City Blues" is a series of blazing jazz solos by a virtuoso whose instrument happens to be the pen. Medina's novel is actually a loosely connected series of short stories, in the style of "Trainspotting," "Three Junes," and "Let the Great World Spin," and it deserves to be ranked with those excellent books. The theme of "Cubop City Blues" is nothing less than the panorama of the Cuban immigrant experience in America, as filtered through the character of The Storyteller--a 25-year-old man, nearly blind, caring for his dysfunctional parents who are both dying of cancer. Informed by the books available to him--The Bible, The Arabian Nights, the 1911 Encyclopedia Brittanica--The Storyteller entertains his parents and himself with tales of the adventures of various residents of Cubop City, both real and invented. These include Juan Antonio, a snobbish literature professor who finds himself falling in love with a younger male colleague he despises; Bennie Rojas, a Havana blackjack dealer who escapes to Las Vegas and loses a piece of his soul in the process; Johnny Luna, who is determined that his seventh attempt to escape Cuba for Miami will be the charm; Adalberto Fuentes, a cocky trumpet player blindsided by love; and especially Angel, a Cuban everyman whose trials include multiple lost loves and a stranger who stabs him nearly to death in the street, for no discernible reason (great shades of Samuel Beckett). While these and other characters are memorable, it is Medina's writing that is unforgettable. With language of breathtaking precision, Medina marinates you in the colors, scents and sounds of his Cubop City. The final paragraph of the chapter titled "Big Babel" demonstrates this: "The morning was dim city light falling on the streets full of people: grand dames of Cubop City, politicians, drivers of armored trucks, cooks and waiters and tax collectors and yoga teachers and stripteasers and Goth teenagers, and you, bilingual loafer among them. Who could imagine such fortune? Who wouldn't give everything he owns to be in your sneakers, central and ubiquitous, omnivalent, fractal, momentary, copacetic?"

STAYING ALIVE - AND INVOLVED By Red Rock Bookworm AMONG THIEVES by John Clarkson is well written, action packed mystery that allows the reader to identify with the books chief protagonist, James Beck, a wrongly convicted ex-con who, with a group of fellow ex-cons, attempts to right the wrong done to a woman named Olivia Sanchez by a couple of guys named Milstein and Crane, the big-wigs at a Manhattan brokerage firm. Seems that Olivia, in the course of performing her job, has stumbled on some questionable multi-million dollar transactions, a discovery that lead to her being assaulted and then fired from her job.Olivia is the niece of one of Beck's ex-con buddies Manny Guzman and Manny is out for blood. Beck convinces Manny that murder is not the answer and to let him handle the problem. Little does Beck realize that Olivia's employment problem is just the tip of the an iceberg that connects Milstein and Crane to deals involving illegal multi-million dollar investments, the Russian mob, illegal arms deals, as well as a clandestine U.S. government agency.Beck, with the help of side-kick DeMarco Jones and a group of colorful cohorts are forced into a power play that expands into an ever widening nonstop war with not only the arms dealer and some brutal Russian mobsters with the NYPD getting involved as well. There are numerous interesting and powerfully written plot twists that keep not only Beck and his cronies on their toes but keep the reader guessing as well. This novel has it all: an interesting story line, plenty of action, and an admirable protagonist - - - all the things that most readers of action/mystery novels love and look forward to. Move over Jack Reacher, Elvis Cole and Joe Pike there's a new bad-ass in town and a new movie just begging to be made.

By Bookreporter Don’t let AMONG THIEVES get past you. There are many worthy books being published on a weekly basis, so it’s difficult to decide what to read. But John Clarkson’s latest, a hard-boiled and hard-driving crime caper novel, stands out among them.It has been a while --- 11 years, a veritable eternity in the publishing world --- since Clarkson has favored us with a novel, and AMONG THIEVES is the perfect vehicle to showcase his return. The book is set primarily in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, an ideal place for the almost nondescript bar that serves as Ground Zero for most of what occurs. The establishment is owned by James Beck (his identity well-hidden behind a business entity), an ex-convict who hires and assists fellow ex-cons. Beck is introduced in one of the best opening paragraphs I’ve read recently, which is right up there with THE LAST GOOD KISS by James Crumley and THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE by George V. Higgins. The jumpstart of the book is simple enough. One of Beck’s friends and associates, a hard case named “Manny” Guzman, wants someone killed. Guzman has a cousin, Olivia Sanchez, who has done very well working for Summit, a New York investment firm. Olivia is special to Manny, having been his sole visitor and contact with the outside world while he was doing a long and difficult prison stretch. Olivia has now come to Manny in dire straits, reporting that she has incurred the wrath of one of the firm’s partners, Alan Crane, who runs one of the firm’s most successful hedge funds. After becoming aware of some questionable transactions that Crane was making and mentioning it to Frederick Milstein, the firm’s owner, Crane violently confronted her. By the time the dust settled and the smoke cleared, Olivia had broken fingers and was out of a job.Manny sees things very simply: Crane needs to die. Beck, however, sees an alternative, one that has the possibility of enriching his outreach program to ex-convicts while extracting a measure of revenge. He begins to exercise the street equivalent of due diligence and almost immediately doesn’t like what he sees. Crane’s fund is tied closely and dug in deeply with a ruthless Russian arms trader who sees any impediment to profit as something that must be removed immediately and effectively. Still, Beck starts softly (at least for him) by confronting Milstein and suggesting that a de facto severance package for Olivia would be appropriate. When the “request” initiates a violent rebuttal, Beck decides to go a different and more dramatic route. The more he learns, though, the more unsettled he becomes. There is much more to Olivia’s firing, and to Summit, than initially was revealed. Still, Beck has a number of assets, namely the loyalty of his crew, extreme firepower, and an innate cunning that enables him to plan two or three steps ahead in a world where allies and adversaries can change in a New York minute and a violent fistfight can end in a wary handshake. By the time the book reaches its powerful and explosive conclusion(s), some things have changed while others have stayed the same (and not always for the better).AMONG THIEVES is fabulous, pure and simple. Clarkson, who also works as a screenwriter, brings some finely honed cinematic chops to the gritty and occasionally darkly humorous narrative in this tale of the people who live constantly on the edge and behind unmarked doors in neighborhoods where most of us never stop if we travel through at all. One of the best pieces of news I received this past week is that Clarkson is working on the second book of a conceived series involving Beck and company. I hope we don’t have to wait another decade for it, but it most certainly would be worth it.Reviewed by Joe Hartlaub.

By Cheryl Stout First of all, I enjoyed this book - mostly. At 400+ pages, I feel that the author could have edited out at least 25% of the content and had a much cleaner, more streamlined story. There was way too much detail, in my opinion, of the brokerage business. As a reader of fiction, I want to have a story flow, with enough detail to keep me informed about the storyline but not so much that the book starts feeling like a textbook. And there was an over-abundance of info. But other than those things, I liked the book. I think it would make a good movie. The main protagonist, James Beck, served eight years in prison for killing a cop (in a bar fight) and then got out on a technicality. He is way tough and has a crew of ex-cons, gang members, and other friends that are just as tough. The people they go up against are ruthless, cruel men including a whole slew of Russians, some mercenaries, and more. The impetus getting everyone riled up is a beautiful, sexy risk and compliance manager (I do believe) at a brokerage firm and the brokerage firm is a big part of this story.Blood and guts, twists and turns - all wrapped up in this current day thriller. I hope we see more of James Beck and his crew in future books.

Nicknamed the Big Red One, 1st Division had fought from North Africa to Sicily, earning a reputation as stalwart warriors on the front lines and rabble-rousers in the rear. Yet on D-Day, these veterans melded with fresh-faced replacements to accomplish one of the most challenging and deadly missions ever.As the men hit the beach, their equipment was destroyed or washed away, soldiers were cut down by the dozens, and heroes emerged: Sergeant Raymond Strojny, who grabbed a bazooka and engaged in a death duel with a fortified German antitank gun; T/5 Joe Pinder, who braved enemy fire to save a vital radio; Lieutenant John Spalding and Sergeant Phil Streczyk, who together demolished a German strong point overlooking Easy Red, where hundreds of Americans had landed.Along the way, McManus explores the Gap Assault Team engineers who dealt with the extensive mines and obstacles, suffering nearly a fifty percent casualty rate; highlights officers such as Brigadier General Willard Wyman and Colonel George Taylor, who led the way to victory; and punctures scores of myths surrounding this long-misunderstood battle.Drawing on a rich array of new or recently unearthed sources, including interviews with veterans, this is the unforgettable story of the Big Red One’s nineteen hours of hell—and their ultimate triumph—on June 6, 1944.INCLUDES PHOTOGRAPHS

The Dead and Those About to Die: D-Day: The Big Red One at Omaha Beach, by John C. McManus

Review “Magnificent! I could not put this book down. John McManus has expanded our knowledge of D-Day history by a considerable factor. It is a great read and will appeal to both devoted students of World War II as well as those with a more casual interest. Don't miss it!”—Joseph Balkoski, author of Omaha Beach and Utah Beach “The Dead and Those About to Die is a gripping, first-hand account of the desperate battle for Omaha Beach on D-Day by the legendary 1st Infantry Division, the Big Red One. On the 70th anniversary of that momentous event, John C. McManus’s tale of courage under fire is a vivid reminder that freedom isn’t free and that when the chips are down stalwart American soldiers will always answer the call of duty.”—Carlo D’Este, author of Patton: A Genius For War andWarlord: A Life of Churchill at War, 1874-1945 “I closed this book with the deepest respect.”—Paul Kennedy, New York Times bestselling author of Engineers of Victory and The Rise and Fall of Great Powers “This is as real as it gets without having been there.”—Walter R. Borneman, national bestselling author of The Admirals, Winner of the Samuel Eliot Morison Award “John C. McManus has created a portrait with words as Spielberg did with images in Saving Private Ryan. Of course, creating such a vivid picture with words is, for my money, far more difficult.”—Paul Reid, co–author of The Last Lion: Winston Spencer Churchill, Defender of the Realm, 1940-1965“A skilled and highly talented author, John McManus has delivered another first-rate piece of scholarship. The Dead and Those About to Die is a tour de force of historical writing.”—Robert von Maier, Editor-in-Chief of Global War Studies “McManus’s masterful work deserves a place alongside those of Cornelius Ryan, Stephen Ambrose and Rick Atkinson.”—David L. Roll, author of The Hopkins Touch“John McManus’s brilliant chronicle of the Big Red One’s experience on Bloody Omaha captures the grit, pathos, and valor of the battle like no other book that I have read. This is gripping history—beautifully and masterfully told by one of America’s premier historians. ”—Patrick K. O’Donnell, national bestselling author of Dog Company“[A] powerful book.”—St. Louis Post–Dispatch

Tavasci If you've ever watched the beginning of the movie "Saving Private Ryan" and wondered how it really was storming Omaha Beach during the Normandy invasion, then you need to read this book. The U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Division, "The Big Red One", had served with distinction in Africa and Sicily and thus was tabbed to spearhead the liberation of Europe on the most crucial invasion beach. While there was a prodigious amount of planning which went into the invasion, the actual execution left much to be desired. The pre-invasion bombardments by aerial and naval forces were almost completely useless and the German obstacles and defenses remained virtually untouched. Into this well-prepared meatgrinder came the 1st. Troops overloaded with too much equipment and placed in the wrong spots on the beach were thrust into a hell on earth which many did not survive.Piecing together interviews, after-action reports and personal correspondence, John McManus has done a masterful job of chronicling the action as the 1st struggled to secure the Omaha beachhead. It's a tremendously compelling read, full of tragedy, triumph, bravery and ingenuity. I don't think I've ever said this before, but when I finished this book I actually felt like reading it again--IT'S THAT GOOD.Buy this book. Read this book. You will not be disappointed.

By Rich Marsh I've read most of the books out there on Normandy, and seen some of the TV Productions, plus several movies. They all tell the story of the 29th Infantry Division and the Rangers of Pointe du Hoc. If anything is mentioned about the 1st Division, it's the quote that gives this book its title. I think most writers and historians just assumed that the combat-experienced "Big Red One" would do the job, so they pay attention to the inexperienced 29th and Rangers. Well it wasn't that simple. The 1st Infantry Division had a terrible battle, but they weren't as confused as the 29th. Even so, they won five Congressional Medals of Honor and so many Distinguished Service Crosses that the total isn't given. As a book - this is an excellent read. I read it in a single sitting - skipped dinner to finish it. Further, unlike most military history book - this one has useful maps stuck at useful places throughout. They are tactical level maps, but include names and numbers to point out where the person quoted actually was. Yes, this includes many quotes from the German survivors. It provides good background - beginning with the relief of General Allen, and what General Huebner did to get the division ready for the invasion. It also discusses the German defenses in detail, and explores some of the myths about those defenses. For example, in reality there were only two 88's covering Omaha Beach - one of which was knocked out early in the battle. But to the dazed Americans, every German cannon was an "88."As military history - this is a very useful book - since it fills in a large gap in the knowledge about Omaha Beach. I don't often recommend books without reservation - but I can this time.

50 of 53 people found the following review helpful. The Big Red One Storms Omaha! By Mike O'Connor In this 70th anniversary year of D-Day, there have been dozens on books published on that epic undertaking. Among the D-Day books put out this year, John McManus' THE DEAD AND THOSE ABOUT TO DIE, D-DAY: THE BIG RED ONE AT OMAHA BEACH certainly ranks as one of the very best. In compelling detail, McManus traces the 1st Division's harrowing experience on Omaha Beach on 6 June.Having fought in North Africa and Sicily, many in the division felt they would be shipped home. Instead they found themselves spearheading the Normandy invasion. Since the Division was the Army's most experienced unit, GEN Bradley decided that, for the landings to succeed, his spearhead needed such combat expertise. Likewise, the Division's commander, MGEN Clarence Huebner, had trained them to top efficiency. The Big Red One would need to call upon all of that as the Omaha Beach landings turned into a disaster. As the first units landed - and many were landed in the wrong locations - they found the Allied bombing and naval bombardment had been totally ineffective. German defenses were intact and took a fearful toll. Loaded down with too much equipment, the men struggled just to survive. The issue was in doubt until individual soldiers with names like Strecyzk, Pinder, Monteith and Stronjy and commanders like COL George Taylor and BGEN Willard Wyman bested the German defenses, rallied the men and began moving off the beach. Victory came at a high price, D-Day being the Big Red One's bloodiest day of the war. The Division had some 1,346 casualties. Some 971 of those casualties came from the 16th Infantry Regiment which landed on Easy Red Beach and saw the worst fighting.McManus does a wonderful job of placing the reader alongside the first wave survivors as they struggle ashore and face the ferocious German defenses. Using a wealth of sources, he interweaves dozens of individual accounts into a coherent whole, relating the sequence of events as desperate men try to fight back or merely survive. Included in those accounts are the actions involving the Gap Assault Teams, Sherman tank crews, combat engineers, USN/USCG landing craft crews, etc. Beachhead maps help the reader follow the action. Eventually, the Division's combat expertise and combat-saavy commanders tilt the scales, confirming the correctness of Bradley's decision. .Reading THE DEAD AND THOSE ABOUT TO DIE is a harrowing, saddening, sometimes sickening but ultimately inspiring portrait of American infantrymen triumphing through sheer will and bravery. It's a humbling read...and a great tribute to all those men who landed on Omaha 70 years ago. Highly recommended.
