Ultimate Spy, by H. Keith Melton

From Publishers Weekly At once newly relevant in the age of Homeland Security, and eternally fascinating by dint of its sneakiness, the espionage game find concise historical and taxonomical representation in this revised edition of the 1996 original, a picture book of spy tools through the ages. Proceeding from the Civil War to the Hanssen era, each page follows the same formula of coupling flat photographs of the implements of spying with bite-size descriptions running alongside. Among the gadgets profiled are the "induction telephone tap" (a device clamped to an external phone cable for difficult-to-detect tapping) and the "rectal tool kit" (a lozenge-shaped plastic case containing, among other things, a saw blade, grinding tool and drill bit, all packaged for discrete transport). An introduction by former Director of the CIA Helms lends a certain adult credibility to this photo-encyclopedia, but really it seems aimed at the inner child lurking in every war buff and Robert Ludlum-ite in business class.Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal Adult/High School-Significant events impacting the world of espionage have happened since the previous edition of this book (DK, 1996). Just within the past two years, the Hanssen case made headlines, and intense focus has been put on counterterrorist measures. These items and more are included here. Added to the material on spy history is a section on post-Cold War happenings, and gadget-philes will drool over the greatly expanded "Equipment and Techniques" section. Also, the identity of the inspiration for Ian Fleming's "Q" character in the James Bond novels is revealed in a neat little biography. Fans of the previous Ultimate Spy will be happy to see that the superb pictorial layout of the Enigma machine is still here along with step-by-step photos of how to operate it. The format remains the same: easy-to-digest text supplemented with an abundance of crisp, eye-catching photos. Detracting slightly from the book are a couple of captions that were complete in the earlier edition, but are missing the last sentence in this one. Still, this volume is a sure winner for reluctant readers, and even those libraries with the earlier version should consider adding this updated edition to their collections.Sheila Shoup, Fairfax County Public Library, VACopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

As a writer of Spy Fiction ("The Malagasy Tortoise"), this book has given me a wonderful and exacting insight to the many gizmos and gadgets being used in the field of spying. From weapons to decoding devices "The Ultimate Spy" has it all. I recommend this book to anyone interested in anything clandestine or who is looking to expand their knowledge of the CIA, the FBI or the private sector of spying. This book is loaded with excellent photos of spy personalities, guns, secret hiding spots, good guys and bad guys -- everything is in here to make yourself a fantastic investigation. An exceptional book, one that I now keep right next to my computer.

Fascinating reading (and viewing of the many illustrations) By A Customer This book--by a real expert in the field--has a unique combination of pictures, words, and topics. It is magnificently illustrated, making it easier to understand a complex subject. The text is accurate and informative, but not too wordy, and the reader can skip around to whichever topics interest him or her the most. The topics covered in this book range from the basics of espionage to the history of spying to examples of spy gear used over the last several decades to the latest in spy technology. This book will interest both those with little background in the world of spying and those who have already studied it a great deal. The collection of illustrations in this book is definitely the best available anywhere.

The text that accompanies all the photos is interesting, but I've noticed more than just a few spots in the book where the captions to the photos stops in mid-sentence. I still love the book and if those captions were complete; it would rate 5 stars.

Can Anna Mae heed God’s call on her life, even if it means leaving behind everything she knows . . . and everyone she loves?

Ever since Anna Mae’s childhood friend Jeremiah left their Amish community, she’s questioned her own place in the Amish world. The Amish life feels as if it’s closing in on her, and with her mother trying to set her up with potential suitors, Anna Mae feels trapped in a life she’s not sure she wants anymore.

But she’s never told anyone that she longs for a tiny taste of freedom—freedom that could be very costly.

When Jeremiah suddenly reappears in Middlefield to help his mentor, Yankee veterinarian Dr. Miller, new questions surface for Anna Mae, along with feelings she’d never fully acknowledged before.

As Anna Mae and Jeremiah rekindle their friendship, old feelings take on new meaning. Yet the question still lingers: What is God’s plan for her life?

Should she stay, remaining loyal to her Amish family, or does God have a bigger plan—one that provides more freedom than she could imagine?

The answers do not come easily, and God’s plan may lead in different directions . . . for both of Anna Mae and Jeremiah.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Great Read! By Karla Hanns Excitement reigned in my home last week, when a courier truck pulled into the driveway!! The dog barked, I squealed !! I had been waiting for a book by a favorite author and knew it was on its way. It had finally arrived. The wait was over, and the reading could begin!! Kathleen Fuller has been a favorite author for some time and I was thrilled to be able to review her newest book from her Middlefield collection. As Amish Fiction is a genre that I love, this book compelled me to read and read and read! Once I started, I was hooked! I could not put this book down. As the day wore on, the world passed me by. I was in the small Amish community with Anna Mae!Anna Mae, the main character in the book, has a life changing decision to make! It is one that will affect her future forever, one that is confusing, difficult and extremely emotional. "Can Anna Mae heed God's call on her life, even if it means leaving behind everything she knows... and everyone she loves?" Jeremiah, Anna Mae's childhood friend, had left their Amish community some time ago. This event left her questioning her own role in the Amish world. This rather strict Amish lifestyle has caused her to feel as if it is closing in on her. To complicate matters, Anna Mae's mother is attempting to set her up with potential suitors. This young lady feels trapped within a life that she is not sure she wants to remain. She has kept her desires for freedom a secret! This freedom could be very costly!!Out of the blue, Jeremiah reappears in Middlefield to help his former mentor, a Yankee vet, Dr. Miller, causing more confusion for Anna Mae. Added to this, are some feelings that she had never before acknowledged.Jeremiah and Anna Mae rekindle their friendship, however a new complication arises. There are more intense feelings than ever before! Now, this has caused her more confusion!! What is God's plan for her life?? Should she stay and remain with her Amish family or does God have something bigger planned for her life?? A life with more freedom than Anna Mae had ever imagined!! What a dilemma for a young Amish girl who had always been protected and lived a rather secluded life!Kathleen does a fantastic job of capturing the reader's attention on the very first page of the book. You quickly become part of the story. The characters are so believable and realistic, that their every feeling, challenge, and heartache , as well as joy, is felt within you. Anna Mae's pull to the English world is so very real. Her desire to experience more than her sheltered life is evident as the plot progresses. Kathleen writes with a complete and accurate understanding of the Amish culture. Her complex characters change as they grow in their relationship and make their decisions. The importance of family and forgiveness is developed throughout the book. Faith is so important to making those decisions we all encounter as we grow up.The plot develops quickly, with just enough unexpected twists and turns to capture and keep one's attention until that very last page. The complications between Anna Mae, Jeremiah, their families and the community kept me thinking and guessing as I continued to read. Would Anna Mae listen to the quiet voice of God to help her make life changing decisions? Would she allow God's plan to be carried out in her life? This is a book that will make you think! The Amish young people have decisions to make that are very different from most of us, however, they encounter problems just as you and I do. Should we follow our faith or our tradition???This is a fantastic read!! A five star book. This book was supplied by the author and publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

When I want to read a book that makes me feel good by the time I'm finished, I go for an Amish story. Kathleen Fuller is one of those authors who has perfected this particular genre. She doesn't explain what each Deitsch (Pennsylvania Dutch, coming from German) word means throughout the text, but rather gives you a glossary at the beginning. I like that because it makes the story flow better for me. A Faith of Her Own is a story about a certain young man, Jeremiah, who left the Amish community to become a veterinarian. He comes back to his hometown in order to fill in for the local vet - the one who gave him his start - after the man broke his leg. Anna Mae is a childhood friend of Jeremiah's. She has been getting more and more restless since Jeremiah left. Somehow she has to figure out what it is that is causing her distress. As Anna Mae and Jeremiah get to know one another again, a volume of questions and decisions to be made assault them. Ultimately, it is God's plan that will win.As a I said before, Kathleen Fuller is a master when it comes to writing Amish stories. This one does not disappoint. I loved the sweetness of the story. The plot is solid and each word builds up to the climax wonderfully. And at the end, I had that deep sigh instant when I knew I'd read something that gave me that feel good moment that I love to have.Religion is brought up in this book. It has to be, because religion plays a significant part in the lives of the Amish. I love how the love of God does not come across as a preaching but as an integral part of everyday life. That is how it should be in every believer's life. Is it in yours? As an aside, I came across an interesting website this morning that easily answers some questions people might have about the Amish. You might want to check it out here.*I received A Faith of Her Own in exchange for my honest opinion. My opinion is my own.*

By Tina Watson Have you ever asked this question after graduating high school or maybe college "What am I to do now?" or "Where do I want to be in 5, 10 years from now?" or "Is this the right path for me?" I can go on and on with the questions, but I think you get the idea. In A Faith of Her Own the characters are asking these same questions to themselves while also healing wounds from their past to move on with future plans.Anna Mae Shetler has been deciding for nine years if her Amish community is where she wants to be? Or does she wants to pursue something outside of the Amish community?Jeremiah Mullet has been gone for nine years from Middlefield's Amish community pursuing a career as a vet. His best friend needs his help. Within a few months, Dr. Miller has a question for Jeremiah. Can Jeremiah heal his past, a wound that he buried deep in his soul, in order to move on with his future?Rebekah Yoder has a passion to ride horses and can her one day decision get her in a hep of trouble. She knows what she wants but will the young man accept her for herself and her faults, too?Caleb Mullet is partners in his brother's horse business working hard to make it successful. Will the truth come out about a purchase Caleb made? Can the pact of "'...we'll always be the best of friends, no matter what. ...Not even work and art will come between us. ...Not even dreams will come between us. ...We promise to always be best friends.'" hold up after nine years after it was made and a lot has happened since it was made?Kathleen Fuller has done it again. She has written another book, that had me on the edge of my seat and not wanting to put it down, even though life said I had to.I loved revisiting Middlefield's Amish community. Revisiting children main characters from Mysteries of Middlefield series by Kathleen Fuller that are now adults in this book.IF YOU ARE A NEW READER TO THIS BOOK, A Faith of Her Own, YOU WON'T BE LOST, FOR Kathleen Fuller MAKES SURE YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENED IN THEIR YOUNGER YEARS AND CURRENTLY in A Faith of Her Own FOLLOW TOGETHER.YES, I look forward to reading more books by Kathleen Fuller.I received a free copy of this book through NetGalley for an honest review. No money was exchanged. This is my honest review in my own words.

The ace pilots of the Republic of China Air Force have long been shrouded in mystery and obscurity, as their retreat to Taiwan in 1949 and a blanket martial law made records of the RoCAF all but impossible to access. Now, for the first time, the colorful story of these aces can finally be told. Using the latest research based on released archival information and full-color illustrations, this book charts the history of the top scoring pilots of the RoCAF from the beginning of the gruelling, eight-year Sino-Japanese War to the conclusion of the Civil War against the Chinese Communists. Beginning as a ragged and very disparate group of planes and pilots drawn from various provincial air forces, the RoCAF gradually became standardised and was brought under American tutelage. Altogether it produced 17 aces who scored kills while flying a startling variety of aircraft, from biplanes to F-86 Sabres.

About the Author Raymond Cheung served as a correspondent for a number of well-known defence journals in the United Kingdom, writing mainly on naval matters. However, his 'first love' is research in the history of the Chinese air Force during the Sino-Japanese War 1937-45. In pursuit of this research, he has visited the archives of the Republic of China Air Force (RoCAF) and the Japanese Defence Department on numerous occasions. Some of this research has been published in Chinese publications. This is his first work on the subject in English.

By Mike O'Connor Osprey's AIRCRAFT OF THE ACES series has seen some fine history but, now and then, they turn out a real gem. Case in point: Raymond Cheung's ACES OF THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA AIR FORCE. Previously, information on RoC aces has been fragmentary and hard to find, especially for post-1950 pilots. Cheung's book, #126 in the Osprey series, shines a comprehensive and illuminating light on all the aces China has produced over the decades.Cheung highlights the various Chinese aces in chapters on early air units of the various provinces, the 1937 Shanghai/Nanking campaigns, the Sin-Soviet Pact, Chinese-American aces, etc. The life and combat exploits of such pilots as Kao, Chi-hang; Liu, Tsui-kang; Loh, Ying-teh; 'Art' Chin; Kao, You-hsin; and Leng, Pei-shu are entertainingly detailed .The book is illustrated with many rare b&w photographs and wonderful color profiles by Chris Davey. Davey's profiles are quite an interesting smorgasbord of types including Curtiss Hawks, Boeing 281s, CR 32s, I-16s, P-40s, P-43s, P-51s and F-86s!All in all, ACES OF THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA AIR FORCE is a great book on a previously-little known subject. Highly recommended.

The proud history of Chinese aces and their detailed air battles By John Gong The colorful history of the ROCs gallant aviators, the development of the ROCAF and their struggle against a modern Japanese Air Force. The book meticulously details air battles from the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression through World War II. It's a piece of history that is not widely known in the West but Raymond Cheung does an incredible job of retelling the story of China's 17 fighter aces. Extremely well researched, rare photographs, great artwork and a must read! You won't find a better resource in the States.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Needs more photo documentation and maps ... but it was a good read. By Sensei Mike This work could have benefited from more photographs to demonstrate the aircraft described in the text along with some maps to show where the action was taking place. Having traveled to China and learned what a large place it is, I can say that this is necessary for most folks not born in China. I learned quite a lot about the time and the military unit despite all these flaws.

Arce This is an excellent book for anyone who wants to be clear about the fundamentals of digital marketing. The text is easy to ready, devoid of any technical jargon, where you can follow the logic and the explanation of the elements to be considered on each step. It makes it clear to understand the fundamental of a digital marketing strategy, to include websites, social media, and the applicability of those elements to a particular type of business. I was able to follow the book along logically and easily. The layout is also very user friendly and can be read in one sitting, because it is easy to read, follow, and understand. When I finished the book, I felt much more comfortable in understanding the often confusing world of digital marketing, social media, websites, Search Engine Optimization, and other elements. It is clear to me now.

Staughton There was something that smacked of greatness from the very first chapter of this book, perhaps some small thrill for a reader that lets them know that they are in for a wonderful ride. Little do we know from those early pages just how good the story gets, and just how talented a writer Lion truly is. It's easy to write a book about a robbery, just as it's easy to write a screenplay about a heist; plenty of people have done it, and many have done it badly. However, thanks to his extensive knowledge of history, detailed research into Prague and the Holy Roman Empire to make the entire premise seem authentic, and the rich character development that never seems to end, Lion managed to capture my interest from start to finish. Each player in this heist has their own mysterious past, as does their benefactor/boss, and as we begin to see the true colors and motivations appear as the book unfolds, we begin to feel the tension build. There is so much build up that I was worried for a time that the pay off wouldn't quite deliver, but the disparate ends of this complicated knot all end up being tied together in a staggering story that I'll be recommending to people for a long time. It is an impressive achievement, and a testament to not only Lion's skill as a writer, but his dedication to the craft. Painting the settings in such tangible, enjoyable ways is a challenge in itself, but to populate it with fascinating characters and a complex, engaging plot is nothing short of brilliant. Well Done!

Author Jim Lion has included plenty of international suspenseful intrigues that take the reader from Hawaii, to Prague, the Middle East and through Europe. Travel in time to past centuries and experience the varied cultures both Muslim and Christian. This book will have you thinking. I’m thinking it would make a spellbinding movie as it has all the plot attributes needed for a blockbuster. The story flow is fast paced, and the main characters Frank Claudius and Rachel have the reader on there side from the start. There are plenty of villains to keep the tension intense and a heist of some valuable treasures to add to the excitement of the read. This is a real page-turner, from beginning to thrilling climax.Any reader who enjoys a historical fiction and thriller combination will love this marvelous story. I would recommend it to all readers, not only of those genres.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Excellent from start to finish. By Liz Evans Have you ever read a story that’s not yet popular and know that there’s something about it that’s just destined for greatness? This is one such story. From the sundrenched beaches of Hawaii to the European charm of Prague, we are taken on a journey through a conflict that we are all too well versed in today. The stage is set for a gripping crime and the players all know their parts but one player is sick of the script. What would you do for money? Fast paced but a good read, this has all the markings of a best seller in the making. Overall, it’s the kind of read that you regret putting down for those bothersome interruptions called life.

"I witnessed the deaths of three of my siblings and the horrible beating of my father by the Austro-Hungarian military. At the age of 17, I traveled alone across a continent and an ocean. I worked in factories and eventually owned my own business. Don’t you dare tell me I would be better off in assisted living..." It is 1988, and 79-year-old Anna Sopko is assaulted when her home is broken into. Much to her indignation, her three children think she would be safer in a retirement home. Her older daughter announces that she has advanced-stage ovarian cancer, and on her deathbed, knowing that her mother had regrets about the way she left Czechoslovakia, she tells her to go back before it’s too late. Meanwhile, Anna’s niece Danika reveals her illegal status when the toddler she is a nanny for is hit by a car. Anna’s son Peter, a lawyer, tries to help Danika while juggling the care of his mother, his own three children, and his wife Theresa, who has untreated bipolar disorder and is nearing psychosis - at his sister’s funeral. Grieving, Anna ends up accompanying her deported niece back to “the old country,” where she is faced with resolving the regrets of her youth, including a jilted, lost love and the strange death of her sister over sixty years ago.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An Engaging and Poignant Read. By Elaine E. Webster This book touched me in many ways. As an American descendent of Eastern European heritage, I often wondered about what motivated my parents’ actions. The glimpse into Czechoslovakian history and culture explains so much. I left home, as Anna and Danika did; a young women with a boy I barely knew, to follow my dreams. My Mother’s reaction was so similar to those portrayed—the family structure so close to my own. The dinner scenes and religious rituals brought back memories of family safety. Then like Theresa, I too struggled with manic depression. The highs and lows are familiar. Then to have it all finish with forgiveness makes this book very special for me.

You are very fortunate to be chosen by Kochi to enlighten folks about the true nature of the forest people. Sorry you and Violet had to go through so much and be taken advantage of. No wonder Kochi didn't care for that parasitic woman who latched on to you. So glad you escaped and are doing better. Please continue to write more books and thank you for caring about the forest people.

It is very difficult to read because of all of the typos, misused punctuation , run on sentences, and misspellings. I suggest you have someone edit it for you and publish a revised edition. I hate to be harsh, because I know you put a lot of time and effort into this, but have another set of eyes review it for you. I think you have a story to tell.

And in "The Bridesmaid," Rendell stays true to form, basically. While most Rendell fans recognize her as the author of the fascinating Inspector Wexford series, she also writes other thrillers. She also writes even chillier thrillers under the name of Barbara Vine. Regardless of which nom de plume she uses, it is difficult to find a writer who can explore--even reveal--the psychological pathways with the effectiveness of she demonstrates.Philip Wardman, destined it seems, meets the mysterious Senta Pelham, an actress, most childlike, at Philip's sister's wedding. Theirs is a relationship that is made in you-know-where. Senta's affections do not come without a price. To "prove" their love, she insists that each of them must kill someone. Not your everyday pre-nuptial agreement, to be sure, and certainly not a characteristic of the genteel English society circles they live in!Certainly, "The Bridesmaid" is a disturbing work and Rendell sees to it that the reader is not comfortable with the situation. The author's craft and technique are clearly demonstrated here and reverberate with a force that is both chilling and sensational. Queasy too. An uncomfortable--yet powerful--read. (Billyjhobbs@tyler.net)

12 of 13 people found the following review helpful. The best, by the best By Crossfinn One of Rendell's greatest gifts is her ability to show what happens when a normal person crosses paths with a sociopath. The hero has no idea what he's met up with because he's too decent to think that way; he and his girlfriend talk past each other in the most chilling way. It's like watching a slow-motion train wreck.I couldn't disagree more with the reviewer who says the ending is dull and disappointing; it's the most dramatic and horrifying ending I've ever read. The last three pages are a tour de force of writing; it just doesn't get any better. "They [the police] would come for this, though. They'd come for this." Gives me chills every time!Do yourself a favor--read it!

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. How Long Can Physical Beauty Attract? By Bucherwurm Say that you meet a beautiful woman, one thing leads to another, and you find yourself in bed with her quite often. OK, not quite often, but daily. How do you feel about her when passion has been satisfied? Well for one thing the leading lady in this book doesn't always tell the truth, and she seems to have an advanced degree in New Age Speak. She lives in a London slum basement that hasn't been cleaned since Charles Dickens died. Senta also suffers from agoraphobia (actually the least of her mental aberrations), and she gets most of her nutrition from wine and chocolates. Enter Phillip who settles down with her in this squalor, and being that he works as an interior decorator he at least feels obliged to nudge her into changing the sheets every three weeks or so. Truly I have never met a man whose brains have sagged so far below his belt buckle. I have also never met someone who is able to rationalize a physical infatuation quite like this simple soul. To say that his friend Senta inhabits a dark world is like saying that Satan has a few bad habits. All in all it's a quite interesting Ruth Rendell tale, and I found it to have a most satisfying ending, although, depraved anthropoid that I am, I kept hoping that constantly deluded Phillip would eventually meet an untimely end by having his head mushed in a garbage disposal. Good book.

Unusual views of WWII By quiske In this charming and unpretentious volume, the author provides context and connecting narrative for young children's experiences during the war years, as recollected in adulthood. The book provides a lot of interesting detail about how south Louisiana adapted to the war, including the threat posed by nearby submarines.

It is written from a different perspective and probably something not many have thought about-how WWII affected the very young here in the United States.

The Fate, by Richard S. Wheeler

From Publishers Weekly Miles City's doctor and sheriff Santiago Toole, in the Montana Territory, has his first clue that a train on the Northern Pacific railroad has been robbed when masked bandits take him at gunpoint to treat a wounded accomplice. After treating the man, Santiago escapes easily, only to learn that the robbery's victim may offer the greatest impediment to bringing the robbers to justice. Gold-mine owner Ingmar Drogovich, whose shipment of gold bullion was stolen and his daughter, Filomena, taken hostage, has a good idea of the who and the why of this robbery; he also has the wealth and influence to bring in his own "private army" and try to hamper Santiago's investigation. Wheeler ( Deuces and Ladies Wild ) cuts into the suspense by revealing details of the robbery early on and seems determined--to the point of didacticism--to let us know whose behavior is good and whose is bad (as in a reference to one of the robbers as "Angus the Righteous"p. 64 ). However, the Drogoviches make a spicy enough pair: Ingmar is greedy, amoral and criminally dishonest, while Filomena, toting only a sharp intellect and sharper tongue, has her armed captors completely outgunned. From AudioFile For Western fans who like all the sound effects and character voices in their listening adventures, Richard Wheeler's tale of The Fate, a famous gold mine, is a must. Launching into fast-paced action from the start, a host of outlaws and lawmen race through a dandy plot of intrigue and deception. Tom Vorce's rich, deep voice is great with the accents of the Irish doctor-cum-sheriff, the unscrupulous owner of the mine and the various others. Vorce can also present highly credible women's voices which have a good deal of range. A presentation with lots of entertainment. R.F.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

By Norm Beavers I was motivated to read a Western by this author in response to his inquiry about other authors. I bought this book used, so he didn't benefit from my purchase.Annoying words began on Page 1 and here are a few that bothered me:Calcimined cottage: one whitewashed with calcimine. big word of little value.Steam cars: I don't know where this originated, but it seems they are just passenger cards pulled by a steam engine. Seems more English than American?Telegraph Morse code? Dits and Dahs in the 19th century: Hardly, it would require an audio signal. But he got it right a few pages later and referred to clicks and clacks. I guess it was mostly clicks with spacing (I heard a sounder once as a demonstration, but I learned Morse code in the military with real dits and dahs and have used it ever since as an Amateur (Ham) Radio Operator).Mulcted passengers: WOW! someone stole their valuables! Do masters of the English language really read Westerns?Gumbo: its not mud; it's made from the okra vegetable (never ate it!)portmanteau: A bag would have been more fitting? But the reason for only 3 Stars: a book of fiction without justice for victims smacks of liberalism and the really evil individual in this plot went free. The only thing he was guilty of was kidnapping, and even that was ignored. Not a very satisfying ending. A nice sentencing turnaround by the judge, but this is a story without a real ending. The real crime was ignored. Louis L'Amour would never be guilty of such nonsense!Norm

Enjoy this fully illustrated edition of Hallowed Ground by James M. McPherson, one of today's greatest Civil War historians.

James M. McPherson, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom, and arguably the finest Civil War historian in the world, walks readers through the Gettysburg battlefield-the site of the most consequential battle of the Civil War.

McPherson makes stops at Seminary Ridge, the Peach Orchard, Cemetery Hill, and Little Round Top, as well as other key locations. He reflects on the meaning of the battle, colorfully describes the events of those terrible three days in July 1863, and places the battle and war in the greater context of American and world history. Along the way, he provides stories of his own encounters with the place and debunks several popular myths.

This is the first illustrated version of this groundbreaking and important book and includes vintage photographs, memorabilia, and maps, as well as full-color photography of the battlefields and historical landmarks as they stand today. Sidebars written by contemporary soldiers, statesmen, and women of the day, as well as pieces by some of today's best-known historians and writers, add context to this engaging and popular book.

Hallowed Ground: A Walk at Gettysburg, by James McPherson

From Publishers Weekly The country's most distinguished Civil War historian, a Pulitzer Prize winner (for Battle Cry of Freedom) and professor at Princeton, offers this compact and incisive study of the Battle of Gettysburg. In narrating "the largest battle ever fought in the Western Hemisphere," McPherson walks readers over its presently hallowed ground, with monuments numbering into the hundreds, many of which work to structure the narrative. They range from the equestrian monument to Union general John Reynolds to Amos Humiston, a New Yorker identified several months after the battle when family daguerreotypes found on his body were recognized by his widow. Indeed, while McPherson does the expected fine job of narrating the battle, in a manner suitable for the almost complete tyro in military history, he also skillfully hands out kudos and criticism each time he comes to a memorial. He praises Joshua Chamberlain and the 2oth Maine, but also the 14oth New York and its colonel, who died leading his regiment on the other Union flank in an equally desperate action. The cover is effective and moving: the quiet clean battlefield park above, the strewn bodies below. The author's knack for knocking myths on the head without jargon or insult is on display throughout: he gently points out that North Carolinians think that their General Pettigrew ought to share credit for Pickett's charge; that General Lee's possible illness is no excuse for the butchery that charge led to; that African-Americans were left out of the veterans' reunions; and that the kidnapping of African-Americans by the Confederates has been excised from most history books. This book is a very good thing in a remarkably small package. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal Adult/High School-McPherson focuses on the period July 1-3, 1863, and explains why readers should know about the battle 140 years later. The book is concise, sprightly, and full of personality-both McPherson's and the participants' in the conflict. A prologue and epilogue flank the three chapters on the battle (each covering one day), relating why it happened and what followed. The author walks readers through Gettysburg from beginning to end, telling a story of simple personal decisions that had a global impact. The importance of the battle is elucidated in Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. When readers have finished this book, the only way they can know Gettysburg better is by going there.Hugh McAloon, formerly at Prince William County Public Library, VACopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist *Starred Review* Without rival as the most popular Civil War destination, the Gettysburg battlefield makes a profound and lasting impression on visitors, who, consulting contemporary photographs of the carnage, can stand precisely where soldiers gave "the last full measure of devotion." McPherson says that this eerie experience, which provokes both empathy and one's imagination, brought him and his students to tears as he guided them around Gettysburg, a tour he replicates here. In structure, McPherson follows the topographical three-day course of the cataclysmic combat, handicapping "myths" that surround arcana of the battle as well as criticism, particularly vociferous among the losing Rebels, of the performance of generals such as James Longstreet. Second-guessing seems second nature to any narrative of the battle, having its echoes even in tiffs over the placement of monuments, as McPherson recounts. If it were only a pointer to the physical ground and commemorative markers, this guide would be ordinary, but McPherson so articulately injects reminders--as of a free black farmer who fled the approaching battle lest Confederates enslave him--of what the Civil War was about as to display the crystalline style that has made him one of our finest Civil War historians. "on great fields something stays" By Yalensian I've been lucky enough to live within thirty-five miles of Gettysburg almost my entire life and luckier still to have been a frequent visitor to the battlefield. While my knowledge of the field and the battle itself likely do not rival McPherson's, I know exactly what he means when he says the place is like a second home. I love Gettysburg. So, too, does McPherson, and his passion permeates this slim little book. Easily read in a couple of hours, Hallowed Ground is part travel journal, part guidebook, part history, deftly woven together by this gifted historian and storyteller. For those familiar with Gettysburg the battle and the place, reading Hallowed Ground is like visiting with an old friend. For those who have never been, it is an invitation. All the sites are there: the Round Tops, Seminary and Cemetery Ridges, Culp's and Cemetery Hills, the Wheatfield, Devil's Den, the Peach Orchard, the McPherson Farm (no relation to the author). But McPherson goes deeper, to the monuments and their stories, even to the observation towers that old hands will recognize. The emotions are here, too. The strange elation you feel driving beneath the trees on Seminary Ridge or climbing the boulders at Devil's Den (at least in your younger days), knowing that men, great and small, walked these same paths, stood on the same ground, fought here for cause and comrade. And yet, knowing that many of these men died here--maybe in the Wheatfield--you feel the solemnity of the place, the horror of tens of thousands of casualties. You sense your own smallness and are awed by the actions that took place here; you are both proud and grateful.None other than Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, who acted heroically at Gettysburg, captured these sentiments and emotions. "In great deeds, something abides. On great fields something stays. Forms change and pass; bodies disappear, but spirits linger, to consecrate the ground for the vision-place of souls. And reverent men and women from afar, and generations that know us not and that we know not of, heart-drawn to see where and by whom great things were suffered and done for them..." The spirit of Chamberlain's words pervades McPherson's book, a work that should appeal to buffs as well as neophytes. Before reading, though, beware. If you can put this book down without wanting to visit Gettysburg (again or for the first time), you have greater will power than I.

Dunkin James McPherson is no stranger to the American Civil War in general and the battle of Gettysburg specifically; his book on the war, Battle Cry of Freedom, won the Pulitzer Prize, and he has led many guided tours and walks of Gettysburg in the past. Hallowed Ground, in essence, is a short but compelling combination of both: a history of the battle and a walk/guided tour, worked into a small hardback book a little over 140 pages in length.Mr. McPherson's narrative takes the reader through a walking tour of the battlefield from the beginning of the battle on July 1, 1863 and sequentially leads the reader from one section of the battle to the next, nearly sequentially as they happened on the battlefield. Occasionally there is a slight detour to other geographic or historic areas of note. At the same time, Mr. McPherson describes how that part of the battle took place, pointing out specific locations where there is a statue or interpretive marker and why it's there.Other odds and bits, like frequent Gettysburg myths, mentioned include the one about statue's hooves and the fate of the rider, or the ever-persistent "fought because of shoes" idea. Strangely enough, Mr. McPherson seems to take offense to various monuments and other events that, while providing stirring examples of Union and Confederate veteran unified nationalism, seemingly forgot what the war was all about in the first place. Such criticisms seem out of place given the context of the book.Book-ending the description of the battle and the guided battlefield tour is an account of the creation of the park itself, and some of the geographic changes that have occurred since 1863. At the end is Lincoln's poignant Gettysburg Address. Three maps detail the major locations and movements of forces during each day of the battle, but there is no map depicting the tour itself or even the location of park buildings, or how the battlefield stands today. There is no index or bibliography, though Hallowed Ground really doesn't need them. Finally, Mr. McPherson's tone is readable and very down-to-earth, and even inserts a joke or two, even a bad pun, which may seem a bit strange but doesn't really feel out of place.A few small criticisms aside, Mr. McPherson's newest work on Gettysburg accomplishes what it set out to do: provide a short history and tour of the battlefield, cover all the high points, and entertain the reader, all of which he more than adequately accomplishes.

By Thomas Moody In the abstract, the notion of a book replacing an actual tour of the Gettysburg battlefield would seem a little far fetched...until one considers that this assignment is performed by the estimable Civil War author James McPherson. Under his pen, we get an amazingly new and unique perspective on this seminal battle that all Civil War readers should treasure as I certainly did.Taking a walking tour of the battlefield and having the many anecdotes and stories that McPherson has developed over time and developing it into a small book (about 175 pages), the reader is treated to an intimate session with the master Civil War historian and undoubtedly learns many new and unique things previously lost to time and history. A study devoted to the battlefield as opposed to the battle, McPherson lets us in on things that never made the campaign studies of Coddington, Trudeau, Phanz or Sears...like the fact that many acres of the battlefield are being judiciously reformed back into the state it took in 1863...from clearing land that has since grown over, to re-growing woodland that has been cleared since the battle, or even, amazingly, culling wooded areas to make them resemble the partially wooded areas in 1863, thus giving the touring historian a feal for what that particular area was like back then. An explanation of the many monuments that dot the fields and the many stories associated with their placement will surely entice Civil War buffs with many new stories that add to the Gettysburg legend. All this is interspersed with a summary level discussion of the battle and the main players...all told in McPherson's unique way that combines both the military and the political climates of the times.A marvelous gem of a book and one that features many new views associated with a battle and time in history that has been covered in many different ways, James McPherson has performed a marvelous service, again, to history and to the general reader. If you're like me, this work will be a vital part of my Gettysburg visit and, frankly, should be a focal point that the National Park Service stresses as a literary companion. A great book!!
