The heavily wooded slopes of Culp’s Hill do not easily lend themselves to visions of long, gallant lines of charging infantry as do other areas on the battlefield at Gettysburg. But the regimental monuments and traces of breastworks that line the slopes of Culp’s Hill bear silent testament to a hellish conflict: no other spot at Gettysburg would see such a sustained period of brutal combat as when North and South vied for this ground. The reader is invited to tour this seldom explored segment of the battle using maps, photos, and first-hand accounts to help understand the unique character of the struggle for Culp’s Hill and the men who fought for its slopes.

The book itself was geared as part of the in-person tour of the Culp's Hill battle site, yet it gave a detailed accounting of the main characters, units and action that made up the fight itself. I also liked how the author covered the changes to the battle area that have occurred since the end of the fight.Though not as big a fight as the actions that occurred to the west of Cemetery Ridge with the massed forces of Longstreet and Pettigrew, the actions at Culp's Hill were critical in the preservation of the Union's north and eastern flanks. The dug in Union forces, even though their numbers were reduced by the shifting of forces to shore up the western defenses, were able to hold this important piece of real estate.

Culp's Hill Deserves as Much Attention as the Battles for the Union Left Flank By Mike Hardy The battle for Culp's Hill has been very difficult for me to grasp, particularly when discussed in larger treatments of the battle. Archer's presentation clarified many aspects of the battle. The combination of the guidance on a driving/walking tour, together with the narrative and historical records, helped considerably. I now appreciate the importance of Culp's Hill in anchoring the Union Army's right.

I bought the kindle addition and the thing I liked was the maps actually show up on the kindle. Sometimes on kindle edition they don't show up or are hard to read. Well worth it.
