J., who was one of the successors of Lafcadio Hearn in the chair of English Literature at the Tokyo Imperial University, in an interesting article recounts the following incident of his experience in that institution. "I was seated on the examining board with Professor Ichikawa, the dean of the English department... There entered the room a student whom I recognized as among the best in the class, a sharp young chap with big Mongolian eyes, and one who had never to my knowledge given any hint of even a leaning toward Christianity. I remembered, however, that his thesis submitted for a degree had been a study of Francis Thompson. Following the usual custom, I began to question him about his thesis.

About the Author Francis Thompson is the author of over thirty books. Born and raised in Stornoway he has vast knowledge of the Highlands and of Gaelic History. He has retired from full-time teaching and still lives in Stornoway. He has been active in Scottish politics and the struggle for full recognition of the Gaelic Language.

76 of 78 people found the following review helpful. Beautiful! Thought provoking! Touching! By A Customer This small book of Francis Thompson's poems is a beautiful experience. "The Hound of Heaven" is the crowning glory of the piece. How often I have found my self running from the "Footsteps" following me. I think the line "All which I took from thee I did but take, Not for thy harms, But just that thou might'st seek it in My arms." is one of the most comforting to those who have lost and suffered. Also very special are Daisy and Little Jesus. Francis Thompson was born before his time a little appreciated then but he is definitely a poet for our moral declining culture. I am fancinated by his love of nature. I would recomend these little poems to anyone who feels lost, afraid, alone and in pain, and to anyone who wants to feel closer to God.
27 of 28 people found the following review helpful. Worth a try By Robert Higgs I bought this little book 30 years ago and, though I do not often read it, I treasure it. Thompson was a very troubled alcoholic I believe and though his prose can be extremely difficult to unravel, it is worth a try. He has some amazing insights into Jesus' determined and pursuing love for us: the faster we run from him, the faster he runs after us. It is an honest account of conversion.
18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. A nice little book By Clare What a nice little book of poetry (soft cover) makes it a good value. Of course "The Hound of Heaven" is wonderful, but check out "Little Jesus" on page 71. It will bring a tear to your eye.
