This book is a winner! This family of history buffs loves World War II: The Definitive Visual History because it's incredibly thorough and wonderfully illustrated. Of course it's earned a spot on our history bookshelf, but it's become a valuable homeschooling resource as well. For years, I've tried to find a really good textbook to teach World War II to my middle and high school students in a way that is factual, but not boring. That's a tall order apparently. Now, though, I have exactly what I've been waiting for! In 372 pages of chronological history, my children can read text, see full-color, museum quality images on every page, view timelines, and study maps. Everything from Blitzkrieg to the atom bomb is covered in detail. While the book isn't an official school textbook, it's become THE textbook for our WWII studies. My children are able to use the book to create timelines and maps, use the information from the text to write papers, and find important people and events for research projects. I've even used the text to pull together some quizzes. This book rocks whether you ever use it for teaching or not. It's even coffee table worthy!

I am also thrilled that my father's and my uncle's photos were included in the front and back covers. This book is a fine tribute to the men and women who fought and died during WWII.

It is well-written with witty dialogue and a well-paced plot. A backdoor look into the life of a high court and a sense of humor is added for good measure.

Everyone is born with a license - To live, To love, To dream. Told from different points of view, License is a story about living and breathing, dancing and singing, laughing and crying, and, sometimes, about dying. It’s the emotions and the moments that make up a life – the temper in an argument, the excitement of a new beginning, the loss in an emptying nest, the magic in moonlight, the thrill of a kiss, the anger in a fist, the coldness of a blade. It’s about twenty-year-old Dixie Andrews - high on life, flying down the road towards change, adventure and independence. It’s about her estranged boyfriend, Greg, trying to rebuild his life after everything that matters the most to him crumbles and falls. It’s about thirty-something waitress, Pam, and her husband, Boyd, and family ties; both the sturdy, safe, and securing kind and the kind that cuts off your circulation in a strangling knot. It’s about Dixie’s parents, Lainey and Joe, and the ups and downs of twenty-five years of marriage and three kids. It’s about Dixie’s co-worker Mike, compassionate, perceptive, strong, yet vulnerable at the same time, and the power of love. Scattered throughout the book’s sixty chapters are twenty-one poems, adding further depth and dimension to the joys and sorrows of life and the lessons it tries to teach us. Life – The blood running through your veins, the heart pounding in your chest. Hearts pound for many different reasons. There’s a license for them all.

By DonnaD In her novel "License", Diane creatively uses artistic license by embellishing the intriguing stories of her characters' lives when she includes poems between the chapters. The poems smooth the transitional flow and give the reader a chance to take a deep breath before moving from one emotional occurrence to the next. I recommend this book if you enjoy meeting a group of very unique individuals. Once you meet Greg, Pam, Boyd, Dixie, Mike, and the rest, you will wish this book has a sequel, so you can stay in touch with them all.

Some events are life-changing for the characters, while others are ordinary things that any reader can relate to in their daily lives. Interspersed throughout the story are insightful thoughts about life and relationships. Poems between the chapters add further depth, and create an artful atmosphere. If you like good stories, poetry, deep thoughts about life, or all of the above, you will definitely enjoy this book.

In the quiet of morning, exactly six months after Pearl Harbor, the Japanese touched down on American soil. Landing on the remote Alaska island of Attu, they assailed an entire village, holding the Alaskan villagers for two months and eventually corralling all survivors into a freighter bound for Japan. One of those survivors, Nick Golodoff, became a prisoner of war at just six years old. He was among the dozens of Unangan Attu residents swept away to Hokkaido, and one of only twenty-five to survive. Attu Boy tells Golodoff’s story of these harrowing years as he found both friendship and cruelty at the hands of the Japanese. It offers a rare look at the lives of civilian prisoners and their captors in WWII-era Japan. It also tells of Golodoff’s bittersweet return to a homeland torn apart by occupation and forced internments. Interwoven with other voices from Attu, this richly illustrated memoir is a testament to the struggles, triumphs, and heartbreak of lives disrupted by war.

Livermore went bankrupt for at least the fourth time in 1934. Despite having amassed a fortune of $100 million by1929, Livermore was back where he started at 16. He did not seem to learn from hismistakes."—Victor Niederhoffer "That was the call of a lifetime, everyone was blind and deep into the crisis and Jesse Livermoremade $100 million going short when almost everyone else was bullish and then almost everyone else lost their shirts."—John Paulson "His stories of making millions, were the financial equivalent of “sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll” to ayoung man at the advent of his financial career."—Paul Tudor Jones "It was an amazing day on 24th October 1929 when Jesse came home and hiswife thought they were ruined and instead he had the second best trading dayof anyone in history."—John TempletonWho was Jesse Livermore?Jesse Livermore, was the most successful stock and commoditiestrader that ever operated on the stock markets. He was both theman who made the most money in a single day and the man wholost the most money in a single day. In fact he made and lost threegreat fortunes between 1900 and 1940.Singlehandedly he caused the two great Wall Street crashes of1907 and 1929, making millions from both. When he speculated hespeculated big and was known on Wall Street as the Boy Plunger. For a brief period in the early 1930s he was one of the world’srichest men with a personal fortune believed to be worth over$150 million, $100 million of that earned in just a few days fromthe Wall Street crash of 1929. In the end it was too extreme achange of fortunes for any man to cope with and Livermore shothimself in a New York hotel lobby in 1940 aged just 63. His legacycontinued and his son, Jesse jr later also committed suicide asdid his grandson, Jesse III.In the summer of 1929 most people believed that the stock market wouldcontinue to rise forever. Wall Street was enjoying a eight-year winning runthat had seen the Dow Jones increase 1,000 per cent from the start ofthe decade - an unprecedented rise. The Dow peaked at 381 on 3rdSeptember and later that day the most respected economist of the day,Irving Fisher, declared that the rise was “permanent”. One man vigorouslydisagreed and sold $300 million worth of shares short. Two weeks later themarket began falling and rising again on successive days for no apparentreason. This situation endured for a month until what became famouslyknown as the three ‘black’ days: On Black Thursday 24th October the Dowfell 11% at the opening bell, prompting absolute chaos. The fall was stalledwhen leading financiers of the day clubbed together to buy huge quantitiesof shares. But it was short-lived succor and over that weekend blanketnegative newspaper commentary caused the second of the ‘black’ dayson Black Monday 26th October when the market dropped another 13%.The third ‘black’ day, Black Tuesday 29th October saw the market drop afurther 12%. When the dust had settled, between the 24th and 29th October,Wall Street had lost $30 billion. Only much later did it became knownthat the man who had sold short $300 million worth of shares was JesseLivermore. Livermore had made $100 million and overnight became oneof the richest men in the world. It remains, adjusted for inflation, the mostmoney ever made by any individual in a period of seven days. This is thestory of that man.

Jesse Livermore - Boy Plunger: The Man Who Sold America Short in 1929, by Tom Rubython

About the Author Tom Rubython is best known as the author of Life of Senna, the definitive biography of Brazilian race driver Ayrton Senna. Life of Senna has become the biggest-selling third party biography of a racing driver, with 100,000 copies sold. Six years after its publication, it still sells over 8,000 copies a year. Before beginning as a biographer, Rubython was well known in the world of magazine publishing, spanning the worlds of sport and business. Aside from his work in Formula One, he has been a specialist business writer for thirty years. In business, he is the former editor of BusinessAge, EuroBusiness and Spectator Business. In sport, he has edited F1 Magazine, BusinessF1 and SportsPro. Rubython now specializes in non-fiction storytelling. He is passionate and methodical about the process of writing and researching the definitive biography. Starting out with a determination to tell the full story of a person’s life, he emphasizes what is important and de-emphasizes what is not; the crucial tools of any biographer.Paul Tudor Jones’ connection with Jesse Livermore began when he started his career in finance at Livermore’s first broker, E.F. Hutton at the age of 26. Shortly afterwards he founded his own investment firm, the Tudor Investment Corporation. He became a student of Livermore and resolved that every new employee be handed a copy of Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, the fictional biography of Livermore, on their first day at work. His study of Livermore’s methods paid off in 1987 when he was able to predict Black Monday on 19th October 1987. Employing exactly the same short strategies as Livermore did in 1907 and 1929 he is said to have tripled his net worth that day. He never looked back and by 2014 his firm had over $14 billion under management. He has consistently made money for himself and his clients so much so that Forbes magazine rated him the 345th richest man in the world in its 2014 wealth rankings. Nowadays he devotes as much of his time to philanthropy as making money for himself running the highly successful Robin Hood Foundation. He started it to give money away himself and encourage other successful fund managers to do so as well. The Foundation is unique in that 100% of donations are spent on good causes. Fortune magazine called it: “one of the most innovative and influential philanthropic organizations of our time.”

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Another Book Review from the Aleph Blog By David Merkel This is a story of triumph and tragedy. Jesse Livermore is notable as one of the few people who ever made it into the richest tiers of society by speculating — by trading stocks and commodities — betting on price movements. This is three stories in one. Story one is the clever trader with an intuitive knack who learned to adapt when conditions changed, until the day came when it got too hard. Story two is the man who lacked financial risk control, and took big chances, a few of which worked out spectacularly, and a few of ruined him financially. Story three is how too much success, if not properly handled, can ruin a man, with lust, greed and pride leading to his death. The author spends most of his time on story one, next most on story two, then the least on story three. The three stories flow naturally from the narrative that is largely chronological. By the end of the book, you see Jesse Livermore — a guy who did amazing things, but ultimately failed in money and life.Let me briefly summarize those three aspects of his life so that you can get a feel for what you will run into in the book:The Clever TraderJesse Livermore came to the stock market in Boston at age 14, and was a very quick study. He showed intuition on market affairs that impressed the most of the older men who came to trade at the brokerage where he worked. It wasn’t too long before he wanted to invest for himself, but he didn’t have enough money to open a brokerage account, so he went to a bucket shop. Bucket shops were gambling parlors where small players gambled on stock prices. He showed a knack for the game and made a lot of money. Like someone who beats the casinos in Vegas, the proprietors forced him to leave. He then had more than enough money to meet his current needs, and set up a brokerage account. But the stock market did not behave like a bucket shop, and so he lost money while he learned to adapt. Eventually, he succeeded at speculating on both stocks and commodities, leading to his greatest successes in being short the stock market prior to the panic of 1907, and the crash in 1929. During the 1920s, he started his own firm to try to institutionalize his gifts, and it worked for much of the era. After the crash in 1929, the creation of the SEC and all the associated laws and regulations made speculating a lot more difficult, to the point where he could not make significant money speculating anymore. The Poor Financial Risk ManagerAmid the successes, he tended to aim for greater wins after his largest successes, which led to him losing much of what he had previously made. One time he was cheated out of much of what he had while trading cotton.Amid all of that, he was well-liked by most he interacted with in a business context. Even after great losses, many wanted him to succeed again, and so they bankrolled him after failure. Before the Great Depression, he did not disappoint them — he succeeded in speculation and came roaring back, repaying all of his past debts with interest. In one sense, it was live by the big speculation, and die by the big speculation. When you play with so much borrowed money, it’s hard for results to not be volatile.A Rock Star of His EraWhen he won big, he lived big. Compared to many wealthy people of his era, he let spending expand far more than many who had more reliable sources of income. Where did the money go? Yachts, homes, staff, wives, women, women, women… Aside from the last of his three wives, his marriages were troubled. His last wife was a nice woman who was independently wealthy, and after Livermore lost it all in the mid-’30s, he increasingly relied on her to stay afloat. When he could no longer be the hero who could win a good living out of the market via speculation, his deflated pride led him to commit suicide in 1940.A Sad Book Amid Amazing SuccessesSadly, his son and grandson who shared his name committed suicide in 1975 and 2006, respectively. On the whole, the story of Jesse Livermore’s life and legacy is a sad one. It should disabuse people of the notion that wealth brings happiness. If anything, it teaches that money that comes too easily tends to get lost easily also. The author does a good job weaving the strands of his life into a consistent whole. The book is well-written, and probably the best book out there on the life of the famous speculator that so many present speculators admire. A side benefit is that in passing, you will learn a lot about the development of the markets during a time when they were less regulated. (The volatility of markets was obvious then. It not obvious now, which is why people get surprised by it when it explodes.)QuibblesNone.Summary / Who Would Benefit from this BookThis is a comprehensive book that explains the life and times of Jesse Livermore, one of the greatest speculators in history. It will teach you history, but it won’t teach you how to speculate.

One of the best books I've ever read on Jesse Livermore By Mike Smith I read everything that I can about Jesse Livermore, and have adopted most of his successful trading strategies. Livermore was also a master of the emotional aspects of speculating, and this book explained it well. I love this book because it filled in many details of his life that were unknown to me. But most important, the author included a number of Livermore trading gems, which I was able to put to use immediately. For example, I didn't realize how important it was to Livermore to only trade a few times a year, and only when he was sure he was right (he didn't always follow his own rules, unfortunately).Livermore was a fascinating man and the world's greatest speculator. I liked the book so much I read it twice and highlighted the most important parts (to me). Mr. Rubython did an excellent job of researching this book. Highly recommended.

6 of 8 people found the following review helpful. JESSE LIVERMORE By Jet Lagged This is a good effort by Tom Rubython about the life of stock and commodity speculator Jesse Livermore. This book fills in the gaps in Lefevre's 1923 "Reminiscences of a Stock Operator", Livermore's thinly disguised biography. It also covers the period from where Lefevre's book ends up to the Livermore's suicide. One thing that stands out about the life of Jesse Livermore - at the time of his greatest coup and consequent great wealth it does not seem to have led to any great happiness. For him or his family. Great wealth really does not buy you any lasting happiness. And, if you are not careful with it, it can actually make your life significantly worse.

The master of linguistics while he's still accessible to us regular folk By mmoan2 I have come back to this book every few years since my first encounter with it as a wild, aesthetic English Lit. undergraduate student, and I've never ceased to marvel at the absolute mastery Joyce holds over the written word. Grace Paley, a mid-20th century author once said that fiction writing was difficult for her generation because "Joyce had already used up all the words," and this was his first work where Joyce took literary impressionism to new heights. I gave up on Ulysses by the (in)famous "Circe" chapter, and I just don't have the chops to even bother with Finnegan's Wake, but this novel actually became more readable for me by the final chapter. Perhaps being a male Irish Catholic who first read this as an impressionable fledgling aesthetic makes this novel my favorite, but Joyce's ability to make a mundane event crackle with the metaphysical weight of a Kantian treatise is unparalleled. Many one-star reviewers here lament the lack of a "story" in this book, but the magic of Joyce is his ability to elevate everydayness to such heights, armed with such a command of language that he must invent new words increasingly as his literary career moves onward. You don't read Joyce expecting a rollicking Tom Wolfe yarn; Joyce is more like the experience of watching dew drip from a flower in utter silence become more mellifluous than the NY Philharmonic, more eventful than 9 AM on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange. The dinner fight between Stephen's father and Dante, the hell-fire sermon of Chapter 3, his concluding conversation with Cranly about his choice to choose an aesthetic life over the ascetic, monastic life; all of these very simple events are charged with life, and purpose. The effect of Joyce reminds me most of Faulkner, who could turn a rural Southern county where the most monumental real event was the sun rising every day into a complex commentary on the most sophisticated mysteries of the human condition. Never has literary realism been done better than in this book.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An important step for Joyce By Ty Johnston I'll tell the truth: Not all of this novel is exciting stuff. A lot of it is stream-of-consciousness writing that seems to meander about before getting to any kind of a point. But that's intentional. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is a semi-autobiographical tale of a young Irish writer from his childhood to his early adult years in the early 20th century. This young man is working out his own belief system, his own philosophy and thoughts about religion and artistry, and rarely does such a thought process occur directly and expediently. Thus, the rambling text. But that's not to say there's nothing of import to be found here. If nothing else, this short novel shows the budding work of James Joyce as he builds his writing strengths and style that will eventually become more apparent in his longer, better knows works, Ulysses and Finnegan's Wake.Besides that, for a writer, there is much to learn within this book. Of the handful of stream-of-consciousness readings I've experienced over the years, this one is by far the best. Even though the story meanders here and there and all over the place, a writer can follow Joyce's thought process and how he eventually gets to his own viewpoints and ideas.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Papist View of Sin By Tar Larner The prequel to James Joyce's Ulysses introduces the reader to Stephen Dedalus, through Joyce stream of consciousness technique. We get to know young Stephen from his first thoughts and words as he matures to a tortured college/high school boy, wracked with guilt over his loss of innocence. Written at the turn of the 19th Century, it predicts the turn to self-consciousness that haunts Freudian psychoanalysis and prefaces the self-centeredness of the Boomer generation. It makes a strong case against turning back to simpler times of following the Church's dictums. The illustrations seem to be randomly gathered from period paintings of 1900 Dublin. They are not insightful.

He lived most of his life one step from his creditors: his house in Paris even had a special exit for avoiding them. CESAR BIROTTEAU is the story of an honest perfumer who is done in by the smarmy du Tillet, a former employee whom he had fired for embezzlement, who works in secret to take his revenge. Birotteau is lured into overextending himself and falls hard. True to his fascination with money and its epedemiology, Balzac delves into the guts of this bankruptcy and shows you all the forces at work to destroy an innocent man. This time, the innocent man prevails. Thanks to the help of Anselme Popinot, a brilliant young marketer in love with his daughter, Birotteau is able to pay back every cent, winning honor for himself after his life appeared to be all but over. This is one of Balzac's greatest novels. Birotteau is an honorable gentleman of the old school, a bit obtuse perhaps, but out of his depth among the wild speculations of the reign of Charles X. Watching these processes ensnare him is repellingly fascinating -- and Balzac spares us nothing.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Another bonne speculation! By Sammy Rocket (SPOILER [but then again the title is a spoiler])Truly the best of Balzac. Fans of the original bon vivant will recoil in entertainment to the slow financial trainwreck of the (previously) shrewd businessman and military hero Cesar Birotteau. This novel showcases Balzac's familiarity with law and bankruptcy law and shines a light into the dark corners of finance, banking, and speculation during the dawn of the nineteenth century in France. This is another great act in the human comedy.

Vivid imagination and fascinating prose By A Customer I still remember, opening my father's dusty trunks filled with books in our attic and being introduced to the strange world of Morgana Royal. It was Corelli's indomitable Morgana who inspired me to choose a career in Engineering, and the notion that for a woman nothing is impossible if there is a thirst for knowledge.Through the years Morgana, with her great intellect and sarcastic wit has continued to be my inspiration. Corelli's prose is rich and vivid., and she makes Morgana believable and endearing. Bitterly cynical, the book rings with criticism of human society and men in particular, but it is Morgana who captures the readers imagination. The story contains some fantastical arguments about Miss Corelli's mystical beliefs, but still makes good reading.

Ancient Egypt: Discover the Secrets of Ancient Egypt, by Martin R. Phillips

About the Author Martin R. Phillips is an extremely passionate historian, archaeologist, and most recently a writer. Ever since Martin was a young boy he has been fascinated with ancient cultures and civilizations. In 1990, Martin graduated with distinction from the University of Cambridge with a double major in History and Archaeology. Upon graduation, Martin worked as an archeologist and travelled the world working in various excavation sites. Over the years, while working as an archaeologist, Martin became very well cultured and gained great insights into some of the most historic civilizations to ever exist. This first hand insight into the ancient cultures of the world is what sparked Martin's newest passion, history writing and story telling. In 2012, Martin decided to retire from archeology to focus on writing. Over the years he has seen and experienced a great deal of fascinating things from all over world. Martin now spends the majority of his free time putting all of his research, experience, and thoughts onto paper in an attempt to share his knowledge of the ancient cultures with the world. Over the past few years Martin has excelled in his writings. His narrative style has a way of combining the cold hard facts with a story teller's intrigue which makes for an excellent reading experience. By Stephanie Verhaegen (Bookfever) This was a quick, interesting and very thorough non-fiction book (or brain food book as I call it) about Ancient Egypt. Everyone who knows me knows I'm hugely interested (obsessed) in ancient Egypt. So as someone who has read a lot of books about this topic I can say that I really liked it. It was short but not so short that there wasn't enough information. Also, it was a well-written book but I also think it was easy to read and I'm pretty sure others will agree with me. So what else? This book took us through ancient Egypt's history, especially the Pharoahs. They've always really fascinated me so I had a lot of fun reading it.I'm also interested in reading this author's other books. So next up is Greek Mythology. Yay!

Maxwell While doing the research for a short story, I'm digging through some primers and "crash course" material on ancient Egypt. I figured I'd take the relatively cheap plunge on this book and it ended up being a solid investment. The author does an admirable job of taking you on a whirlwind trip through ancient obelisks, prophecies, intricate burial rituals and all sorts of other fantastic and sometimes macabre stuff. There's a good amount of detail without overburdening the reader with SO much that the big picture gets lost. Highly recommended if you need to quickly familiarize yourself with this place and time period without spending a year studying.

David I haven't expected this book to be like an encyclopedia which could tackle almost all important factors about Egypt. I think even a thousand-paged book cannot even cover all mysteries and stories that surrounds Egypt. With that being said, I think the author did great on researching and collecting important information about this subject matter then somewhat put most of it in a hundred-paged book. Though short, the author still managed to keep this book as informative as it can be. This would be the fifth book that I got from Mr. Phillips and I can’t deny his effort and efficiency on writing his books. Now, giving my feedback to this particular book, once again, “Ancient Egypt” is very informative and written in a very intelligible manner. I am not an expert when it comes to this subject and I appreciate having books like this which simplifies complicated stories of the ancient days. I recommend it to individuals who would like to start reading about history, mythology etc., this book would be a good start.

"So there I was" as any good guide story starts out and in this book there are plenty of them! For almost 200 years people have been running through the Hudson River Gorge and the Upper Hudson region. This book tells the story of these people, the first explorers in the area, the loggers who first ran the Gorge, and the recreational boaters and rafters who have continued the tradition. But it is more than that! It is also the beginning of a conversation about the fascinating history of a part of a famous river that is often unknown, untold, and passed by. So there we were!

onial Cavalier or Southern Life Before the Revolution - Maud Wilder Goodwin. The Colonial Cavalier is often portrayed as a "theatrical personage," fighting duels, dancing, and living a life of luxury. In actuality, the early Colonial Cavalier lived in a fairly primitive environment, faced with the usual hardships and dangers of pioneer life. It was their descendants who prospered. "This little volume makes no pretensions to the dignity of a history. It aims only, through local gossip and homely details of life and customs, to open a side-door, through which we may, perchance, gain a sense of fireside intimacy with The Colonial Cavalier." This book is filled with more than enough details to appeal to historians. The Colonial Cavalier's home; sweethearts and wives; his dress; news, trade and travel; his friends and foes; his amusements; his man-servants and his maid-servants; his church; his education; laws, punishment and politics; and sickness and death are all examined. Beyond the wealth of historical data, it is a pleasure to read; the narrative flows like a well-written novel. Charming illustrations enhance the text. A full-name index has been added as a aid to researchers.

Good, but not what I was looking for at the time By Janeofalltrades The plot twists In Connection with the De Willoughby Claim certainly keep a reader on her toes, but a chunk of the writing is schmaltzy and overblown. I know Burnett is not a contemporary writer, but i think I could have used less dramatic and romantic description--getting me to the heart of the plot faster. I do recommend this for someone who is looking for an interesting tale, a romantic escape, a story of good triumphing over evil, and a Job-like hero. I enjoyed the book, but just not enthusiastically because it took so long to get to the point. When the point was reached, it was satisfying but not memorable.

Often times the smaller the man, the harder the punch—this adage was true in the case of diminutive Luke Short, whose brief span of years played out in the Wild West. His adventures began as a teenage cowboy who followed the trail from Texas to the Kansas railheads. He then served as a scout for the U.S. Army during the Indian wars and, finally, he perfected his skills as a gambler in locations that included Leadville, Tombstone, Dodge City, and Fort Worth. In 1883, in what became known as the "Dodge City War," he banded together with Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, and others to protect his ownership interests in the Long Branch Saloon—an event commemorated by the famous "Dodge City Peace Commission" photograph. The irony is that Luke Short is best remembered for being the winning gunfighter in two of the most celebrated showdowns in Old West history: the shootout with Charlie Storms in Tombstone, Arizona, and the showdown against Jim Courtright in Fort Worth, Texas. He would have hated that. During his lifetime, Luke Short became one of the best known sporting men in the United States, and one of the wealthiest. He had been a partner in the Long Branch Saloon in Dodge City, as well as the White Elephant in Fort Worth. He became friends with other wealthy sporting men, such as William H. Harris, Jake Johnson, and Bat Masterson, who helped broaden his gaming interests to include thoroughbred horse racing and boxing. Before he died he would become a familiar figure in Chicago, Memphis, New Orleans, and Saratoga Springs, where he raced his string of horses. He traveled with other wealthy sporting men in private railroad cars to attend heavyweight championship fights. Luke Short was always a little man dealing in big games. He married the beautiful Hattie Buck, who could turns heads at all the top resorts they visited as man and wife. Jack DeMattos and Chuck Parsons have researched deeply into all records to produce the first serious biography of Luke Short, revealing in full the epitome of a sporting man of the Wild West.

Review "The authors have covered in greater detail than any previous book or article the so-called 'Dodge City War' of 1883 in which Luke Short was the central figure. This account alone will make the book noteworthy. Fans of authentic Wild West history will leap at the opportunity to purchase the first authentic account of this legendary character written by two recognized and accomplished writers."—Robert K. DeArment, author of Bat Masterson and editor of Life of the Marlows   "The authors provide a fine account of a man who, though small in stature, had the grit expected of a frontiersman, and who, though with flaws, stood up for his principles. In his major physical encounters, in which his life was on the line, he was defending himself and was not the aggressor. Beyond handiness with a six-shooter, Luke Short more correctly was a prominent 'sporting man,' ultimately earning wealth through legitimate gambling activities. This biography gives Luke Short the complete, definitive inspection as a whole man that he deserves and finally sets the record straight."—Rick Miller, author of award-winning Texas Ranger John B. Jones and the Frontier Battalion, 1874-1881   "Parsons is an impeccable researcher and DeMattos has an excellent track record as a Western historian. The Notorious Luke Short contains wonderful new information on Luke Short that William Cox did not have when he wrote his Short biography in 1961."—Richard F. Selcer, author of Hell's Half Acre and co-author of Written in Blood"An impressively written, exceptionally well researched, deftly organized and engagingly presented biography."--Midwest Book Review"The book is a gem of research. . . . The authors' craftsmanship is solid, presenting Short sans the glitz and drama of something like Unbreakable."--Library Journal"Short had a fearsome reputation as a gunfighter and did kill two noteworthy opponents--Charlie Storms and Jim Courtright--but truth be told, he spent far more time and enjoyed more success appealing in the courtroom than trading shots on the street. . . . Neither the book nor the man it chronicles should be sold short."--Wild West"Two biographies of [Short] were written prior to this effort, one by William Cox and the other by Wayne Short. Jack Demattos and Chuck Parsons have written a much more thorough account and it should become the standard text for some time. It is chock-full of interesting information."--Wild West Historical Association Journal"Short owned, or was part-owner, of a number of saloons and gaming establishments and during his life his name was linked with some of the most famous sporting houses of the West: the Long Branch Saloon in Dodge City, Kansas, the White Elephant Saloon in Fort Worth, Texas, and the Oriental Saloon in Tombstone, Arizona. He was friends with the real men who became part of Western mythology, such as Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson. . . . In sum, the book offers a fascinating story and makes for gripping reading."--Kansas History  "The authors have done a very fine job of research and have cleared up much of previous misinformation that has been published about Luke Short. The book is well organized and is very readable. It is highly recommended for all serious scholars of the Old West and for the general reader as well."--Journal of South Texas

By Bob Wood Having spent 10 years researching Luke Short myself and knowing some of the previous works of Jack Demattos (Masterson & Roosevelt, Mysterious Gunfighter Dave Mather and The Earp Decision) and Chuck Parsons (A Lawless Breed and John Ringo) I was beyond excited when I learned these two men were teaming up to write about Luke.I had many unanswered questions about Luke, even after all my years of research and I knew Jack and Chuck were highly regarded as researchers that relied on their own efforts and not on the efforts of other authors. If you have an interest in all things Old West and in particular about the friends and partners of Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson or Doc Holliday to name a few, this book will entertain and educate you about one of the most overlooked gunfighters and gamblers of the Old West period. Luke is one of the few men that actually had the high-noon gunfight (two to be exact), he also had ownership in the Long Branch Saloon, Dodge City and the White Elephant Saloon, Fort Worth, Texas. Two of the most iconic saloons during that period in time. This book is not your varnished family version, it comes with all the warts and details family publications tend to leave out. Plus, it is extremely well documented so I give it two-thumbs up and highly recommend it.

By Christopher Penn Having bought - and been disappointed by - two previous biographies of Luke Short, I was excited to learn that Jack DeMattos and Chuck Parsons were collaborating on a new life of one of the Old West's more intriguing characters. Both are numbered amongst the top researchers and historians in their field and have written entertainingly about the likes of Mysterious Dave Mather (DeMattos) and Texas Ranger John B. Armstrong (Parsons). I was not disappointed. They have explored the available records and produced a rounded portrait of Luke that both corrects some of the stories told in previous works and uncovers much new information. Whilst Luke's gunplays are thoroughly examined, this book also covers his life as a prominent "sporting man" with interests in gambling, boxing and the turf. The publisher has done the authors proud with a good, clear type-face, over 50 illustrations, appendices and over 50 pages of end-notes and bibliography.
