Now in the market for a governess, he lays eyes on Jane Grey and knows immediately she is qualified-to become his mistress. Yet the alluring woman appears impervious to him. Now in the market for a governess, he lays eyes on Jane Grey and knows immediately she is qualified—to become his mistress. Yet the alluring woman appears impervious to him. Somehow Julian must find a way to make her succumb to temptation . . . without losing his heart and revealing the haunting mistakes of his past.Desired: Duke skilled in the seductive art of conversation . . .Lady Jeanne de Falleron didn't seek a position as a governess simply to fall into bed with the Duke of Denford. Under the alias of Jane Grey, she must learn which of the duke's relatives is responsible for the death of her family—and take her revenge. She certainly can't afford the distraction of her darkly irresistible employer, or the smoldering desire he ignites within her.But as Jane discovers more clues about the villain she seeks, she's faced with a possibility more disturbing than her growing feelings for Julian: What will she do if the man she loves is also the man she's sworn to kill? What I Liked:Well, this book wasn't quite what I expected. It was so much more than whatever I thought it would be. I love lord/governess stories (though I feel like there aren't many), so I couldn't wait to dig into this romance. As many of you know, I didn't really like The Ruin of a Rogue (book two of this series). This one (book four) caught my attention because of the lord/governess thing. But there was so much more to this book!Jane Grey isn't a governess - she is a French aristocrat, fallen from grace. Everyone believes that she and her family are dead, murdered nine years ago when an English lord betrayed them, stole expensive paintings from them, and left them to hang. She has known for years that a Mr. Fortescue was behind it all... potentially the same Duke of Denford, Julian Fortescue, her new employer. Jane has every intention of getting her revenge, but she doesn't expect to fall in love with the man...Ahhh, this book was so complex! It's not just a romance novel. There is so much scheming and betrayal and even politics in this book, it's fabulous. I didn't like a lot of things about The Ruin of a Rogue, but I'm glad I wasn't deterred by that novel. The complexity and depth of this novel was fascinating!Jane is the model of a perfect governess. She schools Julian's three half-sisters into proper ladies, all while keeping up pretenses that she is an Englishwoman from St. Lucia, with an excellent reference and a mysterious past. I really like Jane! She is direct and forward and proper and ladylike. She has no problem telling Julian exactly how she thinks things should be done, but it's not done in a stuffy or bossy or annoying way.I like Julian a lot. That man is sinful, but he is also sweet and kindhearted. At first, it seems like he's kind of a meanie, because he doesn't want to take in his three half-sisters as his mother and her latest husband gallivant across the globe. Honestly, I feel for him, and understand. But he slowly begins to really like his sisters. I love seeing this progression. I also love seeing him fall for Miss Grey. The romance is fabulously slow-burn. It's all sorts of wrong, for the duke and his governess to be doing anything improper, but Julian knows no boundaries, and Jane has no honor to lose. She wants to kill him, anyway, but she also wants to kiss him. Tough decision...I thought I would be constantly annoyed by Julian's younger half-sisters, but I really liked them! The oldest is fifteen, the youngest is... seven? Nine? Somewhere around there. The author does a really great job of making sure that readers really like the girls, in addition to Julian and Jane.I won't go too deep into Jane's past and the huge conflict that made her go after the Fortescue family and how everything comes down to her and Julian. But trust me, it gets twisted. And intriguing! I really liked how much bigger it was than Jane's family and Julian's family. There was a country involved, in a time of war. You really have to read the book to know what I mean!Overall, I really enjoyed this book! The characters were really likable, the chemistry was sizzling, and the mystery/story was captivating. What I Did Not Like:The cover. Haha. Not that the author can do anything about that. But anyway - I wanted one or two scenes more between Julian and Jane...Would I Recommend It:I really liked this historical romance novel, so yes! It's not the most amazing historical romance novel of the year, but I am so glad that I didn't miss this one (especially after how I felt about The Ruin of a Rogue).Rating:4 stars. I haven't read books one or three of the series, but I'm glad I read two of the four books! This last book is probably the best (in my opinion).

Jane is compelling, Julian's sisters are charming, and Julian grows a heart By amtmcm Jane Grey was born as Lady Jeanne de Falleron, the daughter of a French Marquis. Sadly, her parents and two younger sisters were guillotined during the French Revolution when she was just fifteen years old. She was disguised as their English governess with copies of her identity papers, so she escaped. Her family was working with an English agent to also escape, but they were betrayed. She knows the man's name was Mr. Fortescue, and that he's related to a duke. Nine years later, she's now twenty-four and determined to find him and avenge her family's deaths.Julian Fortescue is the new Duke of Denford. He's recently won a legal battle with his cousins to retain part of the family fortune and estates so he actually has money to run the dukedom. Early in the book, his mother pays him a visit and informs him that she's remarried for a third time and is leaving his three half -sisters under his care while she sails to America with her new husband. Julian needs to hire a governess and Jane sees this as a perfect opportunity to get inside the house and snoop for information about the Fortescue family members. Julian hires Jane on the spot with the idea that he'll seduce her. This all happens within the first three chapters and sets up the plot of the book. There's excellent character development of Jane and her three charges (Julian's sisters). Every time the story focussed on Jane, I was drawn in and fully engaged. But I found Julian to be flat, one-dimensional and boring until 45% into the book. He's self-centered and shallow. He feels remorse about a past event that he explains early in the book (the reader knows his involvement with Jane's family, but doesn't know how the info will be revealed to her until about 70% into the story). We sense there's more to him, but this side is not developed until he takes a more active role with his sisters and deepens his relationship with Jane. Then the story takes off and gets really good.Miranda Neville's writing is crisp, intelligent and polished, as always. My favorite book by her is still Confessions from an Arranged Marriage (Avon Romance), but not everyone enjoys reading about political processes, which I do. This book has elements of mystery and of course romance. The first 65% of the book takes place in London and then finishes at the duke's country estate with intrigue and revelations. The relationship between Jane and Julian is believable, the sisters are charming and there are multiple secondary characters to add interest to the story. I enjoyed this book and recommend it!

Dialogue is clever, the smoldering looks lead with palpable feeling to the connection By Gaele The third in this series that I have read, Miranda Neville brings her skills to create characters and a storyline that feels plausible, with a slow discovery of the attraction and love that is blooming. Julian is well-comforted in his role as rake and seducer, and far less prepared or confident in his ability to parent his three young half-sisters or the title of Duke. He’s hard not to like, this bit of arrogant rogue with a devil-may-care attitude toward consequences. Even with some despicable background, his development showed the true delight that he found in his sisters, and the desire to ‘do better’ for them. It wasn’t instant – but there is a kindly heart beneath the layer of show and pragmatism.Jane / Jeanne is far more than just a simple governess: her desire to find the “Fortescue” who caused her family’s demise has driven her to great lengths and deceptions. Posing as Jane Grey, a simple governess who is taking charge of his sisters. A perfect set-up for the intrigue and twists that shall come. Understand that this is a time of great upheaval in England, with worries in the aristocracy about the not long past French Revolution, and the wars that follow. The country is rife with spies and agendas, and stories that are half-told and intertwined. Neville did get sidetracked a touch in the presentation of the twists and elements that will become important, and that information did distract from a growing, if slowly, attraction between Julian and Jeanne.A bit of a slow starter, this story interconnects with the others neatly, but can stand alone without great difficulty. Inclusion of historic details and some interesting flouting of conventionally accepted norms of society all help to develop a real interest in the characters and the outcome. There is a sense of possible in these stories, while firmly set in their time there is a modern edge to the characterizations that will resonate with readers. Dialogue is clever, the smoldering looks lead with palpable feeling to the connection between Julian and Jeanne, and the realization of their shared desire for love and a happy ending come with a satisfied sigh.I received an eArc of the title from the publisher via Edelweiss for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
